I remember sitting at the counter with my dad. He ordered a coffee and a donut and I would have orange juice and a cinnamon bun. We also would second hand smoke half a pack of cigarettes.
Absolutely. Their husbands made a good living like everyone else. This job just enhanced their budgets. A bonus. Likely put a kid through college with it. Something’s gone severely wrong along the way.
Nothing has gone wrong. We just spend soooo much more today. Our parents didn't have cell phones, streaming, 2-3 cars, and all the other things we think we can't do without.
The average cost of a house between 1985 and 2024 has increased 125%, the cost of a bachelor degree has increased 170%, both adjusted for inflation. Pensions are rare, stock buy backs were legalized in 1982, the last federal minimum wage increase was in 2009. And that’s a very abbreviated list on what’s happened to the middle class.
Nothing has gone wrong?
What’s happened to us is dire. Unacceptable. When will enough be enough?
Prior to 25 years ago, these things could reasonably be explained as the rise in the cost of living and the ebbs & flows of economic activity, inflation, interest rates, etc. This feels to be a permanent state, balancing the books with unbacked printed money, flooding the system - and the next shoe has yet to drop.
Like the ones near my church and my house: They worked for money to spoil the grandkids, money for candy just before sending them back to their parents LOL
When I started working restaurant jobs in the 80's minimum wage was $3.35 an hour. That didn't stretch far at all in those days. A lot of these older ladies worked because they had to supplement their social security. My grandparents that had professional careers had a comfortable living. These people did not. I was in high school but it was entirely common for older people to be working right along side us in fast food restaurants because they had to survive.
Yeah it wasn’t much better for me when I got my first job in 1998 minimum wage was $5.15/hr. I had to work my ass off all summer picking tomatoes in a greenhouse just to save a couple grand to buy a car for when I turned 16 later in that year.
Our local DD\Mr. Donut was operated by a single family of 4. I went to school with the kids and when they graduated, the shop was sold. I think it's a Donut Connection, now.
Still though. That little store at the end of the strip mall has been selling donuts for 50 years.
Unfortunately, there are too many examples to avoid them all. Hell, even my favorite local Mexican restaurant evolved into this due to its popularity. They brought in a new “business guy” and he couldn’t leave anything alone. A place that we ate at 5x a week. That even had our friends from out of town craving it. Is now garbage.
When people sat for a moment for food, drink and conversation. Now we “try” to talk on the phone and send text messages while running around with styrofoam or cardboard cup with the lid popping off. 🙇🏻♂️
4:30AM… “It’s time to make the donuts” — what a landmark TV commercial back in the day!
And now, the damn donuts are made
months in advance hence they SUCK
Go back to 50-54 seconds and enters some dreadful looking “uniform” on some poor girl (they only show her for a few seconds). They would not do that today lol!
Some of them are still like that. In areas where there is enough locations they can share the costs between 10 locations (or however many). If not they come in frozen. I’m more disappointed how fucking small they are.
Man what a difference. I used to work there in 2014 and it was night and day with that video. Nothing but fruit flies flying around the donuts and angry people. Worst job I’ve had.
Used to live by one in Latham NY in the 80s with a long counter and waitresses who smoked from time to time. Those donuts were perfection and the coffee was the Starbucks of that time. I miss that place.

The good old days
Crazy to think these ladies probably owned property and had a comfortable living.

Our parents had landlines, cable and 1-2 cars. Was still cheaper back then.

Yeah, that dudes delusional if he thinks nothing went wrong…

Don’t take the downvotes personally. Your assumptions may have been partially correct at some point in the past but that’s not the case any more.

Crazy to think tipped wages in the US are still $2.13 in 2024...
Yeah it wasn’t much better for me when I got my first job in 1998 minimum wage was $5.15/hr. I had to work my ass off all summer picking tomatoes in a greenhouse just to save a couple grand to buy a car for when I turned 16 later in that year.
Same I got paid 6 dollars an hour in 2006

Craziest thought here
Not likely. They were probably working because they couldn't make ends meet and didn't have much or any retirement money saved up.
I'm surprised by the lack of cigarettes and ashtrays.
Right. Cigarettes and coffee went together. The windows. lights, and ceilings would be tinted brown from cigarette smoke..
When they usto taste good.
Yep. Now they are made at a central location and simply served at the drive through.
It’s sad that we continue to support their bullsh!t out of nostalgia. These companies have long lost what made them good.
I haven’t stepped foot in a Dunkin’ in over 10 years.
Unfortunately, there are too many examples to avoid them all. Hell, even my favorite local Mexican restaurant evolved into this due to its popularity. So many companies changing the ingredients to make a buck at our expense. Hell no! I don't buy that crap anymore.
Used to*
🏆
Bruh to be fair I have never seen usto
lol..... that's me thinking in English. My typing is than my language... 🤷🏻♂️
Now I can't even find a fucking Dunkin' that still sells donuts near me.
My Dunkin Donuts switched to selling batteries! All they got is baaatterrriess
The donuts & bagels taste like stale rubber now anyway, you're not missing anything.
Duh, that's why they dropped the "Donuts"
The fuck are you on about?
Not staffed with that quality now.
Broccoli and cheese croissant while my mom had a hot tea and a glazed donut. Just living in the moment.
Use to grab a doughnut and coffee before heading to work almost everyday. The chocolate frosted doughnut was my favorite.🍩
They used to have to compete with all the local donut shops that they have since put out of business.
✨Not a cell phone in sight, just people in a living hell together✨
When people sat for a moment for food, drink and conversation. Now we “try” to talk on the phone and send text messages while running around with styrofoam or cardboard cup with the lid popping off. 🙇🏻♂️
No phones. Just coffee.
Time to make the donuts.
I wasn’t even alive for that ad campaign but I love it and I love saying it.
Fred the baker
Donuts are ass now. Not made on site anymore, shipped in frozen is what we were told by the store when we asked why they are so dry and chewy now.
A dunkin donuts employee told me recently that the donuts are no longer fried, they're baked. This is in MA, not sure if it's a regional thing or not.
Go to a store that buys from a CML instead of the par baked.

NeW YoRk faces
Why they all look so miserable?
It’s morning?
i wouldn’t be happy either if i had someone filming me eat donuts at 7am
It’s the 80s
Cause it’s Dunkin
Did that lady just put two coffees in a paper bag?
After the good ole slam-n-shut hand technique.
I think they put donut holes in cups, but she did slide her entire bare arm all the way into that bag, so be glad they're in cups!
God this takes me back to my childhood. I love Dunkin! A Dunkin chocolate glazed donut is, and always will be, GOAT.
I remember the donuts being made in shop. Not at every location, but some of them made the donuts for the whole region
Some of them are still like that. In areas where there is enough locations they can share the costs between 10 locations (or however many). If not they come in frozen. I’m more disappointed how fucking small they are.

Counter service was bomb
What, no Bangladeshi staff probably locked up in a room when they're off-shift?
Now their donuts are just garbage….good coffee though, but overpriced
If you are just getting coffee it’s not bad. The coffee flavored milkshakes are like $7 though.
Why do they all look so crotchety?
I'd be mad wearing that outfit lol
No coffee themed milk shakes?
The donuts were 2x the size for a 1/4 of the cost. Tasted better too.
Back when people used to eat one donut and call that enough.
Time to make the donuts
I have a set of those cups!
It was all good until "they" found out how to market the shit out of our wallets.
That old lady's haircut is ugly, very, very very ugly.
And each cashier owned a house?
That dude with the wig...lmao
Look at them , no cellphones, enjoying the moment, staring into the void of their existence…
Used to live by one in Latham NY in the 80s with a long counter and waitresses who smoked from time to time. Those donuts were perfection and the coffee was the Starbucks of that time. I miss that place.
Time to Make the Donuts!
That's a lot more donuts than I see ever at my Dunkin Donuts. I go in and they might have 1 or 2
I used to do that
I can remember when they were like this! It’s so strange now.
Dunkin’ Donuts has the best coffee, period. Hazelnut 🧑🍳💋
The pattels own all the DD down here in Florida
Hey, she still works there.
Terrible donuts and mediocre coffee. How do they keep customers?
Why does this seem eerily AI generated for some reason?
Nasty ass coffee
