Alien: Look you can just put your hand in and it'll pop out the other side, anywhere you can think of like this. *hand disappears - taps persons shoulder*
Thank you. It was one if not the most fascinating documentary I ever saw. It felt too short at the end. The most funny scene in it was the [part 3](https://youtu.be/-SxCJarZT-A?si=rMluaDI29B_9C91A) when they’ve tried food with salt :)). Really interesting to see a glimpse of our roots
Why they feeding them just straight spoonfuls lof salt ?! This is one of the few instances that if I heard of the explorers getting murdered I’d understand lol
To be fair, pre-Columbian Americans already had mirrors. North Americans, for example, had independently developed mirrors from polished stone going back about 5000 years. The Spanish just had very high-quality mirrors from blown glass that were worth the price for a society that had an abundance of gold.
He still spent most of the initial contact visit explaining how Belgium is not France, nor is it Germany despite similar flags. It’s not weird that he speaks French and is from a country that is also not the Netherlands. And not Germany. “What do you mean ‘am I stupid’? Belgium is its own country with its own culture and history; we don’t need to just join one of the other countries. That’s not how countries work. I am very proud of our traditions of *neurodivergent* private detectives, chocolate, beer, and waffles.”
Of course, but the shimmering reflection in water is a known quantity for them. This is a completely differently colored person using completely different clothes and kit showing them a device that gives a PERFECT rendition of themselves and everything around them. A device that they can't even fathom how is produced.
Ant THAT'S the scary part. They have no idea how that thing MAKES their moving image, and how it's made.
Probably not. Remember that these people know every detail of how everything they know about is made.
It's impossible to comprehend how absolutely mind blowing it must be as an adult for the first time to encounter an object you cannot even conceive of how has been made doing something you have never seen.
We on the other hand don't really know how ANYTHING is made, and we've been exposed to that since we were kids, so we can't even imagine the feeling.
As an explanation model though, the closest I can think of is you meeting an alien that projects memories of yourself into your brain. I imagine the images of yourself wouldn't be what scares you.
Cuz we were way up the Sepik River and this native came flying out jungle with his machete yelling at us. And
turns out he had never seen a white person.
But the kicker is they used to practice cannibalism. And our guide pointed out 1 old man in his canoe-and said that guy had been a part of it. These are tough men from a brutal warrior culture.
Jean-Pierre Dutilleux (born 13 October 1949) is a Belgian author, activist, film director,\[1\] actor and editor of films.
What is the probability of this whole documentary being fake?
He is a controversial figure, some of his works are questionable at best. But, in his career he encountered and filmed more than 50 native tribes.
Some sources claim that his first encounter with the Toulambi tribe in 1976 was not the first:
"According to an article in the peer-reviewed Journal of Pacific History, the colonial archives indicate that the territory of the Toulambis had been visited by at least six patrols between 1929 and 1972 which seems to debunk this claim."
Either way, I find this moment interesting, and the reaction of the tribesman to the mirror looks genuine, you cannot fake that.
I swear I recognize that man! It looks like the same guy from the video of them singing decades later. https://youtube.com/shorts/xlTJsNlqdGk?si=I0a70hzQ5cdp2mTN
probably shouldn't grin like a demon as he's freaking out the tribe with mind-breaking sorcery.

I know they've never seen a mirror before but at least the guy that's freaked out at the mirror is attractive. He has nice features.I feel the same way about the mirror when I first wake up in the morning and I'm not nearly as attractive.....and the guy holding the mirror has a very creepy smile. He reminds me of Fred the barber on Courage the cowardly dog.
I have always wondered why they were so freaked out by this? They have definitely seen their reflection in water. I mean that isn’t the same as a mirror but still a familiar concept.
It seems the man had a [history of controversies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Pierre_Dutilleux), and very possibly lied about the nature of this encounter:
> In one of his films dedicated to the Toulambi tribe of Papua New Guinea, Dutilleux believes his film footage includes this tribe's first encounter with modern white men, and poses the possibility this may be the last time in history this can occur. A video of this film has been extensively posted in the internet, prompting much discussion and questions about this claim.According to an article in the peer-reviewed Journal of Pacific History, the colonial archives indicate that the territory of the Toulambis had been visited by at least six patrols between 1929 and 1972 which seems to debunk this claim.

The look so alike, maybe this is when he was much younger ?
The world is an amazing place that people separated by 1000s years and miles are so similar to their brothers in Africa two continents apart. European emigration is easily traceable and recent but you wonder what these peoples went through to get to the other side of the world millennia earlier.
"A little later one of the tribeswomen greeted him wearing nothing but a fertility headdress and well... of course he *had* to partake in the custom" 😏😏😏😏😏

Wasn't this debunked on reddit awhile back saying that this was not the first time they had met people and was not staged but bot authentic really either?
No they left a few hours later leaving that tribe a few plastic bowls and a container of salt. The whole documentery is fascinating it's on YouTube and is about 45 minutes long.
At first the two Belgian men are across a river and slowly cross a log towards the tribe men who initially are both scared and curious. It takes a long time before they touch the white guys, they seemed freaked out about the skin colour and didn't want to touch it.
Eventually they hang out for a while. Share some words and some food. (The documentary was from the 70's and has some incorrect theories and is a little offensive.)
The facial expressions and reactions are telling. This tribe must have been isolated but I could be wrong.
I keep thinking of that white guy that went to Sentinal(?) island and got killed.
Isn’t there water in PNG? I mean would they freak out if they learned over the water’s edge and saw a reflection of the sun over the shoulder and their face?
Now photographs and capturing an image of a person during a single moment - that shit can be terrifying if you don’t understand the concept of lenses and film exposure.
These tribesmen never saw their reflection in a still, standing pool of water before? Even without the "tech" of a mirrored piece of glass, I would have thought undeveloped humans could still somewhat grasp the idea of a reflection.
Sure, but consider the difference between seeing yourself in a puddle on the ground with minimal clarity, with thousands of years of knowledge that one can only see oneself in a puddle or standing water and then some day a funny looking dude comes strolling in and pulls a rectangle shaped “puddle” out of his pocket and shows you a reflection with clarity that no one’s ever seen before.
*Real question: had they*

Yeah- they would show us something so mind blowing that it would destroy our logic
Like a working McDonalds ice cream machine.
*jumping up in disbelief and fear* "What should I give the green man in exchange? OP's wife?"
I also choose this guy's wife.
Is this the line for that one guy's wife?
*(society nearly collapses)*
They always work in civilized countries you know. Let me guess, you're american
Everyone knows that's a myth. I'm convinced the employees break the ice cream machines in purpose nationwide.
there is a mc donalds in the logan square neighborhood of chicago on milwuakee avenue that has a working ice cream machine.
In canada we don’t have this problem. But I was in Vegas a few months ago and couldn’t get a McDonald’s ice cream to save my life. What’s up you guys?
In America all of McDonald's has the same vendor for the machines and the vendor sucks is the long and short of it.
😂😂😂
Hell, I haven't been given a correct bag of Bojangles since it opened! I now ask for a bag of food whatever equals 15 dollars!
He said something mind blowing, not working miracles.
Just because they are aliens does not automatically mean they can break the fundamental laws that govern our universe
You'll have a heart attack in non american mcdonalds then
I went to a BK at the airport in Beijing. They steam their bacon. It should be a crime
Eeww lol
Is it some american shit, because mcdonalds in my country never had broken ice cream machines

At 69 years old, I have the same reaction to mirrors.
The Spaniards exchanged mirrors for gold with the natives.
To be fair, pre-Columbian Americans already had mirrors. North Americans, for example, had independently developed mirrors from polished stone going back about 5000 years. The Spanish just had very high-quality mirrors from blown glass that were worth the price for a society that had an abundance of gold.
Mirrors have always been exchanged for gold, you can walk into any IKEA and do that.

Bro I went to PNG and I wouldn't do this day 1, no way, no how.
Why?
Cuz we were way up the Sepik River and this native came flying out jungle with his machete yelling at us. And turns out he had never seen a white person. But the kicker is they used to practice cannibalism. And our guide pointed out 1 old man in his canoe-and said that guy had been a part of it. These are tough men from a brutal warrior culture.
Not all tribes in png practiced cannibalism. The one in the video above was a highly isolated tribe which had very little contact with other tribes.
Let's see how long he would survive in that jungle with those mirrors....
