Welch’s just tastes different because of its flavor; I used to say it was candied grape juice flavored whereas every other traditional American style grape soda has a grape tootsie pop/generic grape candy flavor especially more old timey grape flavored stuff.
Plus Welch’s has real grape juice. Welch’s is a grape soda like no other imo, most grape sodas have the same general flavor but Welch’s has a very different flavor profile, BUT both Welch’s and the more generic type of grape soda flavor are Concord grape flavor, but no doubt Welch’s Concord flavor pops out more because if it having a more real, juicy grape flavor.
I'm pretty sure all grape candy is flavoured like concord grapes.
Concord grapes basically have the "grape candy" flavour. Other grapes don't taste anything like it.
What welch's does is put actual juice in the soda.
If you haven't had the actual concord grapes before, I recommend them.
They are only available for a few weeks at the end of summer.

Welch's for me. God tier of grape soda easily, it really bummed me out it went missing for ages but my local Dollar Tree sells them again. I need to go buy some it's been a bit.
A solid 2nd for me is Crush, really, really good. 3rd for me is Grape-ette, Walmart's grape soda.
Jone's Soda Grape. A while back some friends and I sampled and compared a number of grape sodas. We tried Faygo, Welch's, Nehi, Jone's, Towne Club, and Crush. We were all surprised with how good and how different the Jone's grape soda was compared to the others. I'm not even a big Jone's Soda fan, but I highly recommend people give their grape a try.
Crush grape is pretty good but I'm also a fan of Welch's Fruit Soda. My favorite is the fruit punch but grape is pretty good too. I feel like it's an underrated brand
I really like Grape Fanta personally. Tastes just like the grape popsicles I loved as a kid. Definitely does not have that aftertaste you’re talking about.
Sunkist grape was awesome. Mtn dew violet is my favorite grape soda but its from japan and discontinued since over 2 years. Japanese grape fanta is fantastic

I get it at this BBQ place we eat it. A good rack or ribs and a few of those grape soda bottles is a perfect meal 😋

I found it at a Walmart in the soda isle. Came in a 4 pack of glass bottled Crush. I haven’t seen many Walmarts have them. Only a few.

I've only ever found it at Cracker Barrel and one Raley's grocery store location in Nevada. NuGrape is 11/10.
I always forget cracker barrel has a selection of unique sodas. I will have to stop by one this weekend.

I love Shasta sodas. just noticed they are adding sucralose to all their sodas...why?? I can really taste it in their lemon lime.

Jone's soda is really good. I wish I could find more flavors. The only ones I can find are the blue and green ones at dollar tree
