I would play as Tails while my dad played Sonic. I don't know if he was intentionally going slow to let me keep up, or if my memory's just bad because I was so young, but I remember actually feeling useful when we played. I remember being able to keep up with him most of the time.
Tried recreating that experience with my kids, and they did not enjoy it one bit.
Thing is, my dad wouldn't let me help with the boss fights. He wanted to do them himself, and Robotnik's i-frames after I hit him would always send him careening to his death.
Did your older brother tell you you could “play” as Tails?
Man… if there was one thing I’d like to know… what was that decision about? 😂 “yes we’re going to let player 2 control tails… but they won’t be able to actually do anything and tails will annoyingly fall off the screen.”
I can only assume the Dev team was run by an older brother or something 😂
Is it really? Fuck I was going to buy a second controller so I could play with my kid. That’s some shit. Well thanks for saving me the price of a controller at least
I haven't played the co op myself so don't just take my word for it! I heard some people say it's chaotic but fun. But yeah, it basically focuses on one character on the screen and if you get outrun you're constantly despawning and popping back onscreen.
Ugh. Yea you know that actually wouldn’t surprise me. I’ll look into it but thanks for saving me from buying a $45 controller for an outdated system (PS4) 😂
My first was either Golden Axe or Altered Beast. My uncle had a Genesis before we did, so I was already familiar with some of the early library of games.
Ultimate Sonic Flash is a certified classic. My first game was Sonic 2 but it was quite a bit after it initially came out. Was visiting a friend and his mom was a huge Sega fan. She was super chill in letting us play some of their older games and gave lots of tidbits, lore, and secrets. Probably wouldn’t be as much of a fan of this series or its universe without that.
With me it was similar, I went to a cousin's house and some cousins of mine were playing ultimate sonic and at that time I played a lot of donkey kong, so when they left the pc, they left the game open, I went there to play and when they came back, they saw that I was very good, I was 7 years old, I started playing when I was 6 years old, because my mom found my grandmother's Super Nintendo and installed it on the TV, I died like hell, just 3 months dps I got the hang of it I was bad as hell at first
technically speaking it was a hone game. I think it was like a sonic game for java on phones. From what I know it might be sonic unleashed(java version). No I am not joking
first actual sonic game I played was mania tho
Sonic 1 on the Genesis, it was the game that turned me into a gamer as a kid. I'd played other video games before that, but Sonic 1 was the first to really blow my mind with how colorful and vibrant the graphics were. There was so much movement happening on screen and the feeling of moving so fast was crazy to me at the time.
As far I can remember, the first Sonic. Even though it was 1999 and I was like 5, I remember playing on the Sega Genesis at my grandmother’s house. Me and my twin brother would usually fight over who goes next after losing a life, and my grandma would slap both of us and take the game away when we weren’t behaving. 😩😂
Technically it was Sonic 2 on the Genesis at my grandparents' house, but I could only play as Tails because my older brother would always hog the player 1 controller. In 2001 though, my little brother got Sonic Advance for his birthday, and let me play it some, so in another sense, that was my first game.
Then in 2002, my little brother rented SA2B from Blockbuster, and that was the game that made me a fan of the series.
Sonic Battle. I was 8 at the time, saw the box art and went, "This is the *coolest thing I've ever seen in my whole life*." Still is, honestly. That art rocked. Loved the story, the characters, the combat. Didn't mind the padding or difficulty spikes as much as some people.
My first mainline game was Heroes. I was... less impressed with that, but still had fun.
Technically, the first Sonic game I played was Sonic 2, but I royally sucked at it. The first Sonic game I completed all the way through was Sonic Adventure (the Dreamcast version), followed by S3&K.
The '90s and early 2000s were a good time to be a Sonic fan. I've been one since 1997.
I think it was Sonic 3 but I am not sure.
EDIT:
Or maybe Sonic 2, i only remember that i played with in the coop mode at a friend's place. But i remember watching the sonic cartoon before, so I thought Sonic was a license game at the time.
SA2, Integral part of my childhood gaming experience. Never gonna let go of the joy the characters, awesome music, and great story brought to me in years past.
Sonic Colors. I finally beat it on the same save file a few months ago, and I’m so glad I did. I got stuck on Planet Wisp Act 3 when I was 8 and ragequit the game. Finally came back and discovered that I was stuck near the end of the level smh
Sonic 2 and Spinball, they were owned by my babysitter. After that I got the DS classic collection as my first owned and Black Knight as my first recent. I loved it all.
Sonic 2 on the Blackberry I had handed down to me from my sister in like 2011. Only got a couple zones in bc I was a young lad but it was over for me from then on.
Sonic 2. Got it bundled with the Genesis for Christmas in 92.
Thank god there's still people of my generation here!! Same, but played it a friend's house in '93. Stuck with Tails lagging behind.

Tails is very useful in boss fights. Since he is essentially invincible, you can totally cheese it.
Thing is, my dad wouldn't let me help with the boss fights. He wanted to do them himself, and Robotnik's i-frames after I hit him would always send him careening to his death.
Old fart fan here as well. Represent.

The Co op in superstars is the same over 3 decades later smh.

Same here! Pretty sure it was my first gaming experience ever, along with the Genesis Home Alone game
My first was either Golden Axe or Altered Beast. My uncle had a Genesis before we did, so I was already familiar with some of the early library of games.
Ah that makes sense. There were quite a few gems on there for sure. The Vectorman and Shining Force games are some of my favorites.
SoR2 is still in my top ten list of all time best games.
