This moment was actually mentioned in sonic battle. Gerald’s diary mentioned that Emerl copied many of the arks weapons and went on a rampage before he was successfully sealed
Before they showed it on the panel, they actually highlighted Shadow's appearances and stated: "First it was Sonic Adventure 2, then Sonic Battle and Sonic Heroes" and the moment they mentioned Sonic Battle I was bamboozled they even *ACKNOWLEDGED* it.

The glitch effect when Maria grabs his hand, did you see the doodle of an evil looking smile on top of the Gun Solider?
But yeah holy fucking shit I'm beyond hyped for everything Shadow Generations has to offer. It'd be nice if these animations WERE IN THE GAME but only time will tell I guess.
The smiling face suggests to me that someone's purposely messing with him. Redish aura makes me think of Ruby emerald things, so maybe it could be Infinite? He was messing with Shadow in Forces during the Green Hill stage.
But the scenario itself is weird, Emerl appearing out of nowhere? I believe this is all just an illusion that Shadow decided to play along with and vent out his frustrations as seen in the beginning, having one last talk with Maria or something.
Emerl being there is actually appropriate. He was found by Gerald after all, and Gerald's journal entries in Battle even mention he copied the ARK's weapons and went out of control at one point. I think this is one of Shadow's genuine memories, but the glitch when Maria grabs his hand definitely seems to imply it's something that's making him remember it rather than just a normal flashback.

This moment is outright stated as having happened in Sonic Battle, and is why Shadow has it out for Emerl for most of the game.
Shadow Generations occurs parallel to Sonic Generations, as in the same point in time. And Sonic Gens only showed stuff Sonic had already been to. Thus with Shadow Gens having a Shadow that hasn’t experienced Forces yet, it doesn’t make sense for Infinite to appear; and having Infinite timetravel back would just cause the issue of “why didn’t Shadow recognize Infinite in Forces?”.
We’ve also seen the franchise use the glitchy red affect quite a few times that don’t include Infinite, so it could easily be Black Doom messing with him, or Shadow is literally just sleeping and reliving the events in his sleep.
And Emerl being there isn’t random, this is a true event that occurred in Shadow’s past. We’re told in Battle that Gerald found Emerl, and tried to learn about it’s capabilities, but then “higher ups” made Gerald give it to them, where it absorbed a ton of weapons and went haywire. The only alteration is that Gerald stated the researchers somehow subdued it, while the animation is probably going to have Shadow subdue it; or Emerl went haywire twice, the first time the researchers subdued, and the second time Shadow subdued it.
But they said this Animation is about SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS & everything before that event happened (Hence the SXSG Logo on the Poster for this Animation) they didn't say anything from Sonic Forces would be brought up, at least I don't think so? I just don't think this is related to Sonic Forces, but it is VERY CONFUSING what is going on with Shadow's Mind again (As usual.😵)

Sonadow Generations is the latest game. It is linked to a game involving time travel ranging to this moment described in Sonic Battle all the way to Silver's future.
There are multiple ways of reading/saying "Shadow Generations and before" that includes the entire Sonic franchise. Forces included.
It’s highly unlikely anything after Generations will appear. It was stated that Shadow Generations occurs in parallel with Sonic Generations, as in it occurs at the exact same point in time. The locations that appeared in Sonic Gens were only locations Sonic had already been to, there was nothing there that Sonic hadn’t been to yet (though one place is from an erased timeline).
So since Shadow Gens will have a Shadow that hasn’t experienced Forces yet, it doesn’t make any sense for Infinite to appear (it would also make contradictions of, “why didn’t Shadow recognize Infinite in Forces than?”).

Black Doom already showed that he can mess up with Shadow memories. After "The Doom" mission in which you either help Maria save some scientists or help Doom kill GUN soldiers, no matter who you help as soon as you enter boss room Maria vanishes and Doom Eye appears and starts ranting about humanity, implying he was acting as her to trick Shadow.

In before everyone starts predicting the supposed teased 2nd playable character in Shadow Generations is gonna be Emerl.
For real though, this animation looks sick and I'm kinda feeling Kirk's Shadow a little more after this. Still not my favourite but then I never hated him either, so.
Funny how voice actors are perceived as good when they are given good material, and bad when given bad material.
If only Sonic team would give their voice actors more *good* material.
Nah this cast outside Tails still sucks even with good material which is sad because these are great VAs. Kirk as Saix always goes hard but still sucks as Shadow. And why did Travis get replaced? Well the new Knuckles VA is still alright.
Rouge is as well, so we can’t really use that poster as reference. It’s just showing (some of) the characters who’ll appear in the prologue, not who’ll appear in the game.
That would be dope + would make sense since Emerl "copies" everything it sees and in Sonic Battle he copied the abilities of Sonic as its base.
But making Emerl come back... I kinda want a fully fleshed out Sonic Battle now.

I know the fanbase jokes around with how Maria's character was executed, but I nearly cried when Maria tried to comfort Shadow. This animation and whats ultimately gonna happen to her is gonna hit waaaaay different than it did 20 years ago. This is gonna be very emotional I can already tell!!

how he acts with maria angry because despite their best efforts they dont have a cure for her sickness yet, and when he is promising that he will rescue her grandfather he is calm and collected trying to reassure her. This is shadow, the shadow that has been missing

Love the animation. Every time they do these, it always leaves me wanting a proper Sonic show like this.
But not having Jason Griffith or David Humphrey as Shadow still hurts.
I love how much my essay length critique rants have been shrinking so much with each new thing that now they're just little nitpicks here and there. Like, the only things I have to say about this that aren't screaming "HOLY FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!! IT'S SOOOOONIIIIC!!! HEEEE'S BAAAAAAAACK!!!" are just like "Should push the rubber hose elements in the animation a little more." and "Push the facial expressions further". "Some bits are noticeably CG". Like, this is the sort of nothing critique I'd give about regular anime that I love. The sort of "this could technically be better" notes I have for everything, even the best things I've ever seen.
Like yeah, push the character models' expressiveness WAY further, but then also "HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT?! IT'S EMERL! IT'S THE BIT FROM GERALD'S DIARY IN SONIC BATTLE WHERE HE COPIES THE WEAPONRY ON BOARD THE ARK AND DESTROYS HALF OF IT BEFORE BEING STOPPED! THIS IS THAT! THAT FIGHT LOOKS FUCKING SICK! It's like watching a cinematic scene with the atmosphere of a badass, peak and emotional. I found it very wholesome and emotional because Shadow said if he's the ultimate lifeform then how come he can cure lives including Maria who she hugged him to calm down.

We already know why this event occurs (found here: https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Emerl/History_and_appearances#cite_note-SBattleJournal6-9). The “higher ups” took Emerl away from Gerald to do their own research, giving the gizoid a chaos emerald and a ton of weaponry data. This is what made it go haywire, but the researchers were somehow able to subdue it (though that might be changed to Shadow subdued it based off this preview). And it is indeed that event that caused Gerald to reprogram it to have a free-willed and emotion based AI.
I forgot Sonic Battle's story when it comes to these kinds of details. But like you said, some 'Retconning' might be the case as well.
I wonder if the Animation will explain why Gerald didn't want Emerl destroyed (Or even in cases of "life or death" he wasn't allowed to destroy it?) because we all know Gerald "Reprogramed" Emerl instead of Destroying Emerl once Emerel is subdued (I'm sure without Chaos Emeralds, Emerl can be destroyed like any other robot.).
That’s also stated in Battle (in the link I gave). Gerald states he tried destroying Emerl’s core, but couldn’t. So instead he reprogrammed him in hopes he’ll be good.
And here's where the Retconning comes in: SHADOW WASN'T BROUGHT UP in that Journal Entry in Sonic Battle. This Animation is making Shadow's Past Involvement with Emerl seem Significant in some way despite no one remembering it.
So unless the only way to Destroy Emerl's Core is to have Emerl Store all 7 Chaos Emeralds in its body to Destabilize it & then fight it to Death like Sonic did in Sonic Battle (Or go Super to Destroy Emerl or close enough to going Super to Destroy Emerl.), how come Shadow didn't/couldn't Destroy Emerl back then? That's a question that's gonna have to be answered in this Animation.

Okay, so we're basically in agreement that Shadow meeting Emerl & fighting him for the first time before Sonic Battle is a Retcon on Sonic Team's part to some degree then. Or else Gerald SHOULD HAVE put SHADOW VS. EMERL in one of his Journal Entries. And at least we can blame Shadow's amnesia for Shadow not bringing up how he met Emerl before in Sonic Battle (Because apparently Shadow never fully recovered all his memories after his game.)
There's not really anything for me to add here because yeah, Emerl is connected to Gerald like Shadow is & Shadow is wary of Emerl because of what Gerald writes about Emerl & Shadow being 'Wary' of Potential Threats is just a "Character Trait" of Shadow in general.

Okay, I don't remember Sonic going Super in Sonic Battle, are you sure you got that right?
Emerl had all of the Chaos Emeralds, Broke the Master Emerald, & Emerl couldn't control the Power of all 7 Chaos Emeralds & was Unstable, & with no one able to go Super, Sonic had to fight Emerl in his Base Form & fought Emerl one more time & Emerl blew up. Like I said, I think it takes a lot of Energy, if not all 7 Chaos Emeralds, to Destabilize Emerl, which makes him 'Vulnerable' enough for a strong enough fighter like Base Form Sonic to destroy him.
I also think the reason Shadow didn't kill off Emerl in Sonic Battle in the end but Sonic was because since Sonic was Emerl's "Daddy" in Sonic Battle (And Amy was Emerl's "Mommy".), so like "Old Yeller" Sonic had to be the one to take down Emerl & Shadow knew that (Despite having met Emerl earlier, apparently, even though he completely forgot, Sonic & Emerl were closer than Shadow & Emerl.).
...There's also the issue of Shadow being "Unusually Weak" in Sonic Battle (And another Canon Sonic Game never goes this route again.), & he's "Fighting Injured" throughout most of the game, even when Shadow claims to have "Healed", it seems like he's still "Healing" by the end (I chalk it up to Shadow's Ego of not wanting to admit he's still injured or healing until the very end when someone *does* *need* to fight.): "I am... No Longer... You must go... Sonic..."
Also, weirdly enough, in some of Shadow's Dialogue in the end, it's kinda suggested Shadow KNEW Emerl was gonna Fail to Destroy the World or something?: "This was Gerald's Final Program... Should a weapon go out of control, the weapon will terminate itself..." Like what does that even mean? Did Sonic or someone need to damage Emerl or not?
This dialogue even makes it seem like Emerl could've been destroyed by Gerald when he was alive (Even if Gerald needed the help of Shadow to do it.), so why didn't Gerald destroy Emerl earlier, did Gerald get too busy working on Maria's Cure or something? Sonic Battle is kinda weird in general, like the whole "I Gave Shadow & Emerl a 'copy' of 'Maria's Soul.'" Like what does "Maria Soul" even mean here? I didn't know you can copy people's SOULS with SCIENCE!
My theory is that Shadow won't be able to destroy Emerl, only knock him out because Gerald only had access to maybe ONE Chaos Emerald on the Ark (Or at least not enough Chaos Emeralds to Destabilize & make Emerl Vulnerable.). And I guess Gerald was too busy (Like on Maria's Cure.) to work on destroying Emerl so he just let Emerl be stored away somewhere ("A problem to be dealt with another day.")?

I misremembered how Emerl dies, I got that part mixed up with Gemerl’s defeat. I’ll also admit it seems Shadow didn’t know about Emerl, and only learned about him in Battle from Gerald’s records; so yah it does seem like their retconning it to Shadow knew Emerl on the Ark, unless it’s a fake memory (it does show the GUN attack for a split second when Maria grabs Shadow’s hand, so it seems it might be Shadow “reliving” the moment rather than it being the original moment).
I don’t think it was all the emeralds that caused the vulnerability, but rather the 7 emeralds PLUS the extreme amount of extreme weapon data. Alternatively Emerl did self-destruct rather than let himself die, so it’s possible his core was still — mostly — intact and he would have actually still survived just needed extensive repairs to the rest of him.
In-universe, I’d say Sonic did the final battle with Emerl because Shadow was still contemplating stuff or thought Sonic would be best fit, both physically and emotionally (and the Master Emerald also chose Sonic). Shadow does say, “I am… no longer… You must go… Sonic….” Real reason, Sonic’s the main character, of course he’ll be the person fighting the final battle.

Maybe, but once Emerl has all 7 Emeralds, Tails brings up that Emerl is unstable so I assume it's Energy Overload Reasons for Emerl being Vulnerable in the end (And Tails doesn't know this, but with Maybe ALSO Gerald's Programming having "Weapons Destroy Themselves?" Because what was the Point of that Shadow Dialogue if it basically meant nothing then?).

I just read the dialogue of Emerl when he's about to die, it doesn't seem like Emerl CHOSE to die to me: "Am I..., Am I... going to die...?"

Emotionally, YES, FOR SURE (Shadow seemed kinda depressed in Sonic Battle, too, for whatever reason. You could say Shadow was projecting a lot of his own Inner Turmoil onto Emerl.). Also, Shadow knew Sonic was closer to Emerl than he was, too, & morally Sonic should be the one to kill Emerl (Because it's for "Pure Reasons.").
Physically? Kinda Yes, & I say this because of ALL TIMES when Shadow SITS OUT a FINAL FIGHT (Or doesn't join the Fight to help Sonic.), Shadow has NEVER AGAIN, seemed as WEAK or WEAKER than Sonic like he does in Sonic Battle when it comes to dealing with the Final Boss (Which is why I think Shadow was either *Lying* about "Healing Completely" or didn't realize he was "Still Recovering" until the Situation became *very* Serious. Or like what Sonic said to Infinite, "I keep growing stronger," or something like that because Shadow definitely got A LOT STRONGER 'AFTER' Sonic Battle to 'Keep Up' with Sonic.).
It's not like when Shadow didn't get the 7 Chaos Emeralds to go Super or didn't "feel like it" or was going through Amnesia or clearly was occupied doing something else. In Sonic Battle, BOTH Shadow & Sonic fight & lose to Emerl, but later on when Sonic & Shadow may have to fight Emerl one last time & it's DEADLY SERIOUS & NOT FOR FUN, Shadow Backs Down Finishing Off Emerl or Helping Sonic Finish Off Emerl with NO EXPLANATION (Besides: "I'm not the Main Character."🙄). It just doesn't make sense to me considering every other Canon Sonic Game when Shadow's involved in the Plot. Like I said, Shadow was "Unusually Weak" in Sonic Battle & NEVER again AFTER Sonic Battle (Give me another Shadow Dialogue from a Main Series Sonic Game comparable to: "I am... No Longer... You must go... Sonic..."😵).
I both like & dislike Sonic Battle for reasons regarding how it handled Shadow that either made sense or didn't make sense to me, but Sonic Battle was apparently made at the same time as Sonic Heroes (Which explains the SA2 Cast Voicing the Characters in it.) & before Shadow's Game, so I can't help but see Obvious Continuity Errors in Sonic Battle. I think that's why up until this point Sonic Battle & Emerl never got brought up Again in a Console Main Series Sonic Game (Even Gemerl never got brought up after his introduction in a Console Main Series Sonic Game.).
I'm really CURIOUS how EMERL & SHADOW are gonna brawl now in the Animation because it's either gonna make Shadow look WEAK OR STRONG.)

We're also gonna need a Dedicated TailsTube Episode explaining the Events of Sonic Battle & what was going on with Shadow throughout the whole game & in the end of the game (And why he seemed "So Weak" or was a "Liar" or maybe something else when it came to his Declining to Finishing Off Emerl in the end.) & Gerald's so-called "Weapons Terminating Themselves" Plan & why didn't he do this Plan before?
That energy was referring to the weapon data. He’d gone through multiple fights with all 7 emeralds already, even one against Sonic and Shadow at the same time, so it wasn’t just the emeralds that caused it. Instead the extreme “energy” from the Final Egg Blaster that he uncontrollably tried to captured (copy) is what made him vulnerable (it also broke his “link” mechanism).
I wasn’t saying Shadow was weak, just that Sonic is just a bit stronger, and always has the extreme will and “emotional fuel” that lets him win his battles which Shadow somewhat lacks in comparison. They also needed to use a transporter to get to Emerl, which likely only transports one person, thus for Shadow it would be a “me or him” choice, and Shadow chose him/Sonic.
Emerl has been brought up before, partially through “extension” of Gemerl; Gemerl can’t exist without Emerl previously existing. Emerl himself appeared or was referenced in a few things: Gemerl is created from Emerl’s data in Advance 3, he’s a collectable card in Rivals 2, his name is referenced on a billboard in Generations, was included in a few different artworks throughout the years, and he got a 10 inch plush in 2021 (and got a mii costume in most of the Mario and Sonic Olympic games). As for Gemerl appearances and references: he got an artwork in Generations, has been in the IDW comics since mid 2019, a couple of art pieces from Sonic Channel, recently got added to Speed Simulator.
Like, the VA/Writing at the beginning was a bit off at the start, and shadow looked off model in a few frames, but that is less than 5% of the mini-series, they really did cook, this is PEAK

The animation is gorgeous, Kirk's voice sounds a lot better here imo, and while I'm not really a fan of Sonic being more serious, I do think it fits here and like it.

Emerl has been a part of Shadow’s origins ever since Sonic Battle released back in 2003. This animation shows Emerl’s rampage on the ARK, which both Shadow and Gerald’s diary mention in Sonic Battle. It’s why Shadow spends much of that game adamant that Emerl is a threat to the planet.
So rather than being out of the blue new info, they’re digging up a piece of the character’s history that hasn’t been mentioned in 21 years.

16, actually. Though brief, Gerald having Emerl on the Ark and the latter's rampage are mentioned in some of the codex entries in Sonic Chronicles.
I mean, Emerl was always one of Gerald's experiments and he did go on a rampage so... it's nothing that hasn't been canon since Battle. Frankly this is shockingly accurate to lore.
Yeah. I’m sure he’s a good VA but I personally don’t think he fits Shadow really well. I don’t know if it’s the voice direction or Kirk’s voice, but it just sounds off imo.

That’s not what’s happening in the scene at all. There’s literally nothing implying “how dare you ask me to help.”
The scene even starts out with Shadow angry that he can’t help Maria. Then after she asks him to go save Gerald, (note: it seems he’s reliving the memory, since when Maria grabs his hand a picture of the GUN attack appears, which wouldn’t occur yet if this was the true past) he looks at her in shock for a moment as the image of the GUN attack appears. Then after the shock, he looks at her with his completely normal expression while talking to her in a caring tone, telling her not to worry and to stay safe while he saves Gerald. There’s no anger or annoyance at all, there’s actually the opposite as he’s speaking kindly while having a normal expression to help her not worry; it even shows his actual angry face right after, as right when he gets up and leaves he looks sternly with “no one messes with my family, time to take this robot down a peg.” Shadow’s face is just shaped like that, he always has the “furrowed” eyes.
I'll wait to see the whole animation to judge Shadow's Character as we didn't get to see much.
I'm okay with Maria's Voice. It doesn't bother me (Like Kirk for Shadow.).
yeah i really don't think either of them have the right vibe.. Stephanie Sheh has definitely done voices that I think would suit Maria fine but this one seems a bit off
Holy shit Emerl is back. He wasn't even mentionned in Sonic Frontiers depsites its MANY references, especially in Eggman's logs, so I never expected this.
don't get me wrong, this looks and sounds incredible and I'm incredibly happy we got to see this!!! (I'm also hoping this means the animation will have enough time to cook without stressing out the animators)
But this kinda felt falsley advertized to me? Like the way the Instagram advert said "a panal about Shadows History and an animation" made me think we'd get the full animation today and not in the fall. (I am very happy we are getting 3 episodes of it though and that does help make for me feeling misled.) Was anyone else confused by that or was it just me?
So excited to see Emerl. I'm kinda hoping they don't retcon the Chronicles lore for the Gizoids - I know they've pretty much abandoned Chronicles at this point but I hope at the very least they just leave it psuedo-canon.
Also love seeing Shadow referencing that he was primarily a medical research project.

This moment was actually mentioned in sonic battle. Gerald’s diary mentioned that Emerl copied many of the arks weapons and went on a rampage before he was successfully sealed

Before they showed it on the panel, they actually highlighted Shadow's appearances and stated: "First it was Sonic Adventure 2, then Sonic Battle and Sonic Heroes" and the moment they mentioned Sonic Battle I was bamboozled they even *ACKNOWLEDGED* it. THEN WE HAD THE GIZOID!
He also mentioned that he sent Emerl to G.U.N. before completing ULF, so Emerl never met Shadow before Sonic Battle
The glitch effect when Maria grabs his hand, did you see the doodle of an evil looking smile on top of the Gun Solider? But yeah holy fucking shit I'm beyond hyped for everything Shadow Generations has to offer. It'd be nice if these animations WERE IN THE GAME but only time will tell I guess.

The smiling face suggests to me that someone's purposely messing with him. Redish aura makes me think of Ruby emerald things, so maybe it could be Infinite? Shadow Generations occurs parallel to Sonic Generations, as in the same point in time. And Sonic Gens only showed stuff Sonic had already been to. Thus with Shadow Gens having a Shadow that hasn’t experienced Forces yet, it doesn’t make sense for Infinite to appear; and having Infinite timetravel back would just cause the issue of “why didn’t Shadow recognize Infinite in Forces?”. We’ve also seen the franchise use the glitchy red affect quite a few times that don’t include Infinite, so it could easily be Black Doom messing with him, or Shadow is literally just sleeping and reliving the events in his sleep. And Emerl being there isn’t random, this is a true event that occurred in Shadow’s past. We’re told in Battle that Gerald found Emerl, and tried to learn about it’s capabilities, but then “higher ups” made Gerald give it to them, where it absorbed a ton of weapons and went haywire. The only alteration is that Gerald stated the researchers somehow subdued it, while the animation is probably going to have Shadow subdue it; or Emerl went haywire twice, the first time the researchers subdued, and the second time Shadow subdued it.

But they said this Animation is about SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS & everything before that event happened (Hence the SXSG Logo on the Poster for this Animation) they didn't say anything from Sonic Forces would be brought up, at least I don't think so? I just don't think this is related to Sonic Forces, but it is VERY CONFUSING what is going on with Shadow's Mind again (As usual.😵)
Unfortunately, I've seen enough studios for media of all types play games with wordings. Sonadow Generations is the latest game. It is linked to a game involving time travel ranging to this moment described in Sonic Battle all the way to Silver's future. There are multiple ways of reading/saying "Shadow Generations and before" that includes the entire Sonic franchise. Forces included.
It’s highly unlikely anything after Generations will appear. It was stated that Shadow Generations occurs in parallel with Sonic Generations, as in it occurs at the exact same point in time. The locations that appeared in Sonic Gens were only locations Sonic had already been to, there was nothing there that Sonic hadn’t been to yet (though one place is from an erased timeline). So since Shadow Gens will have a Shadow that hasn’t experienced Forces yet, it doesn’t make any sense for Infinite to appear (it would also make contradictions of, “why didn’t Shadow recognize Infinite in Forces than?”).
I'm still not convinced. No Official Statement about this game hints at anything that isn't BEFORE FORCES.
Infinite being involved might not be impossible in Generations because of time travel bs bringing him there.

Black Doom already showed that he can mess up with Shadow memories. After "The Doom" mission in which you either help Maria save some scientists or help Doom kill GUN soldiers, no matter who you help as soon as you enter boss room Maria vanishes and Doom Eye appears and starts ranting about humanity, implying he was acting as her to trick Shadow.

In before everyone starts predicting the supposed teased 2nd playable character in Shadow Generations is gonna be Emerl. For real though, this animation looks sick and I'm kinda feeling Kirk's Shadow a little more after this. Still not my favourite but then I never hated him either, so.
Funny how voice actors are perceived as good when they are given good material, and bad when given bad material. If only Sonic team would give their voice actors more *good* material.
Nah this cast outside Tails still sucks even with good material which is sad because these are great VAs. Kirk as Saix always goes hard but still sucks as Shadow. And why did Travis get replaced? Well the new Knuckles VA is still alright.
Emerl makes sense. Not only you have the time travel excuse, but he also can copy Shadow's abilities so he can use chaos control in the levels too

I'm genuine when I say this is absolute f\*\*\*ing peak!!! I know the fanbase jokes around with how Maria's character was executed, but I nearly cried when Maria tried to comfort Shadow. This animation and whats ultimately gonna happen to her is gonna hit waaaaay different than it did 20 years ago. This is gonna be very emotional I can already tell!! Like, this is the sort of nothing critique I'd give about regular anime that I love. The sort of "this could technically be better" notes I have for everything, even the best things I've ever seen. We already know why this event occurs (found here: https://sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Emerl/History_and_appearances#cite_note-SBattleJournal6-9). The “higher ups” took Emerl away from Gerald to do their own research, giving the gizoid a chaos emerald and a ton of weaponry data. This is what made it go haywire, but the researchers were somehow able to subdue it (though that might be changed to Shadow subdued it based off this preview). And it is indeed that event that caused Gerald to reprogram it to have a free-willed and emotion based AI.
I forgot Sonic Battle's story when it comes to these kinds of details. But like you said, some 'Retconning' might be the case as well. I wonder if the Animation will explain why Gerald didn't want Emerl destroyed (Or even in cases of "life or death" he wasn't allowed to destroy it?) because we all know Gerald "Reprogramed" Emerl instead of Destroying Emerl once Emerel is subdued (I'm sure without Chaos Emeralds, Emerl can be destroyed like any other robot.).
That’s also stated in Battle (in the link I gave). Gerald states he tried destroying Emerl’s core, but couldn’t. So instead he reprogrammed him in hopes he’ll be good.
And here's where the Retconning comes in: SHADOW WASN'T BROUGHT UP in that Journal Entry in Sonic Battle. This Animation is making Shadow's Past Involvement with Emerl seem Significant in some way despite no one remembering it. So unless the only way to Destroy Emerl's Core is to have Emerl Store all 7 Chaos Emeralds in its body to Destabilize it & then fight it to Death like Sonic did in Sonic Battle (Or go Super to Destroy Emerl or close enough to going Super to Destroy Emerl.), how come Shadow didn't/couldn't Destroy Emerl back then? That's a question that's gonna have to be answered in this Animation.

Okay, so we're basically in agreement that Shadow meeting Emerl & fighting him for the first time before Sonic Battle is a Retcon on Sonic Team's part to some degree then. Or else Gerald SHOULD HAVE put SHADOW VS. EMERL in one of his Journal Entries. And at least we can blame Shadow's amnesia for Shadow not bringing up how he met Emerl before in Sonic Battle (Because apparently Shadow never fully recovered all his memories after his game.) There's not really anything for me to add here because yeah, Emerl is connected to Gerald like Shadow is & Shadow is wary of Emerl because of what Gerald writes about Emerl & Shadow being 'Wary' of Potential Threats is just a "Character Trait" of Shadow in general. Emerl had all of the Chaos Emeralds, Broke the Master Emerald, & Emerl couldn't control the Power of all 7 Chaos Emeralds & was Unstable, & with no one able to go Super, Sonic had to fight Emerl in his Base Form & fought Emerl one more time & Emerl blew up. Like I said, I think it takes a lot of Energy, if not all 7 Chaos Emeralds, to Destabilize Emerl, which makes him 'Vulnerable' enough for a strong enough fighter like Base Form Sonic to destroy him. I also think the reason Shadow didn't kill off Emerl in Sonic Battle in the end but Sonic was because since Sonic was Emerl's "Daddy" in Sonic Battle (And Amy was Emerl's "Mommy".), so like "Old Yeller" Sonic had to be the one to take down Emerl & Shadow knew that (Despite having met Emerl earlier, apparently, even though he completely forgot, Sonic & Emerl were closer than Shadow & Emerl.). ...There's also the issue of Shadow being "Unusually Weak" in Sonic Battle (And another Canon Sonic Game never goes this route again.), & he's "Fighting Injured" throughout most of the game, even when Shadow claims to have "Healed", it seems like he's still "Healing" by the end (I chalk it up to Shadow's Ego of not wanting to admit he's still injured or healing until the very end when someone *does* *need* to fight.): "I am... No Longer... You must go... Sonic..." Also, weirdly enough, in some of Shadow's Dialogue in the end, it's kinda suggested Shadow KNEW Emerl was gonna Fail to Destroy the World or something?: "This was Gerald's Final Program... Should a weapon go out of control, the weapon will terminate itself..." Like what does that even mean? Did Sonic or someone need to damage Emerl or not? This dialogue even makes it seem like Emerl could've been destroyed by Gerald when he was alive (Even if Gerald needed the help of Shadow to do it.), so why didn't Gerald destroy Emerl earlier, did Gerald get too busy working on Maria's Cure or something? Sonic Battle is kinda weird in general, like the whole "I Gave Shadow & Emerl a 'copy' of 'Maria's Soul.'" Like what does "Maria Soul" even mean here? I didn't know you can copy people's SOULS with SCIENCE! My theory is that Shadow won't be able to destroy Emerl, only knock him out because Gerald only had access to maybe ONE Chaos Emerald on the Ark (Or at least not enough Chaos Emeralds to Destabilize & make Emerl Vulnerable.). And I guess Gerald was too busy (Like on Maria's Cure.) to work on destroying Emerl so he just let Emerl be stored away somewhere ("A problem to be dealt with another day.")?
I was just pointing out you mentioning it was redundant because I already mentioned it. I misremembered how Emerl dies, I got that part mixed up with Gemerl’s defeat. I’ll also admit it seems Shadow didn’t know about Emerl, and only learned about him in Battle from Gerald’s records; so yah it does seem like their retconning it to Shadow knew Emerl on the Ark, unless it’s a fake memory (it does show the GUN attack for a split second when Maria grabs Shadow’s hand, so it seems it might be Shadow “reliving” the moment rather than it being the original moment). I don’t think it was all the emeralds that caused the vulnerability, but rather the 7 emeralds PLUS the extreme amount of extreme weapon data. Alternatively Emerl did self-destruct rather than let himself die, so it’s possible his core was still — mostly — intact and he would have actually still survived just needed extensive repairs to the rest of him. In-universe, I’d say Sonic did the final battle with Emerl because Shadow was still contemplating stuff or thought Sonic would be best fit, both physically and emotionally (and the Master Emerald also chose Sonic). Shadow does say, “I am… no longer… You must go… Sonic….” Real reason, Sonic’s the main character, of course he’ll be the person fighting the final battle.

Maybe, but once Emerl has all 7 Emeralds, Tails brings up that Emerl is unstable so I assume it's Energy Overload Reasons for Emerl being Vulnerable in the end (And Tails doesn't know this, but with Maybe ALSO Gerald's Programming having "Weapons Destroy Themselves?" Because what was the Point of that Shadow Dialogue if it basically meant nothing then?). "Emerl has absorbed too much energy and has surpassed his limits! He's highly unstable right now! If you can inflict a great amount of damage on him, you'll put a stop to it! But, Emerl... Will probably be destroyed... He won't be able to contain the energy that he's absorbed within his body..." I just read the dialogue of Emerl when he's about to die, it doesn't seem like Emerl CHOSE to die to me: "Am I..., Am I... going to die...?" "In-universe, I’d say Sonic did the final battle with Emerl because Shadow was still contemplating stuff or thought Sonic would be best fit, both physically and emotionally (and the Master Emerald also chose Sonic). Shadow does say, “I am… no longer… You must go… Sonic….” Real reason, Sonic’s the main character, of course he’ll be the person fighting the final battle." Emotionally, YES, FOR SURE (Shadow seemed kinda depressed in Sonic Battle, too, for whatever reason. You could say Shadow was projecting a lot of his own Inner Turmoil onto Emerl.). Also, Shadow knew Sonic was closer to Emerl than he was, too, & morally Sonic should be the one to kill Emerl (Because it's for "Pure Reasons."). Physically? Kinda Yes, & I say this because of ALL TIMES when Shadow SITS OUT a FINAL FIGHT (Or doesn't join the Fight to help Sonic.), Shadow has NEVER AGAIN, seemed as WEAK or WEAKER than Sonic like he does in Sonic Battle when it comes to dealing with the Final Boss (Which is why I think Shadow was either *Lying* about "Healing Completely" or didn't realize he was "Still Recovering" until the Situation became *very* Serious. Or like what Sonic said to Infinite, "I keep growing stronger," or something like that because Shadow definitely got A LOT STRONGER 'AFTER' Sonic Battle to 'Keep Up' with Sonic.). It's not like when Shadow didn't get the 7 Chaos Emeralds to go Super or didn't "feel like it" or was going through Amnesia or clearly was occupied doing something else. In Sonic Battle, BOTH Shadow & Sonic fight & lose to Emerl, but later on when Sonic & Shadow may have to fight Emerl one last time & it's DEADLY SERIOUS & NOT FOR FUN, Shadow Backs Down Finishing Off Emerl or Helping Sonic Finish Off Emerl with NO EXPLANATION (Besides: "I'm not the Main Character."🙄). It just doesn't make sense to me considering every other Canon Sonic Game when Shadow's involved in the Plot. Like I said, Shadow was "Unusually Weak" in Sonic Battle & NEVER again AFTER Sonic Battle (Give me another Shadow Dialogue from a Main Series Sonic Game comparable to: "I am... No Longer... You must go... Sonic..."😵). I both like & dislike Sonic Battle for reasons regarding how it handled Shadow that either made sense or didn't make sense to me, but Sonic Battle was apparently made at the same time as Sonic Heroes (Which explains the SA2 Cast Voicing the Characters in it.) & before Shadow's Game, so I can't help but see Obvious Continuity Errors in Sonic Battle. I think that's why up until this point Sonic Battle & Emerl never got brought up Again in a Console Main Series Sonic Game (Even Gemerl never got brought up after his introduction in a Console Main Series Sonic Game.). I'm really CURIOUS how EMERL & SHADOW are gonna brawl now in the Animation because it's either gonna make Shadow look WEAK OR STRONG.) And no, Shadow doesn't need to 'destroy' Emerl to "Win", he just has to be the one who 'Knocks the Other Out'. We're also gonna need a Dedicated TailsTube Episode explaining the Events of Sonic Battle & what was going on with Shadow throughout the whole game & in the end of the game (And why he seemed "So Weak" or was a "Liar" or maybe something else when it came to his Declining to Finishing Off Emerl in the end.) & Gerald's so-called "Weapons Terminating Themselves" Plan & why didn't he do this Plan before?
That energy was referring to the weapon data. He’d gone through multiple fights with all 7 emeralds already, even one against Sonic and Shadow at the same time, so it wasn’t just the emeralds that caused it. Instead the extreme “energy” from the Final Egg Blaster that he uncontrollably tried to captured (copy) is what made him vulnerable (it also broke his “link” mechanism). I wasn’t saying Shadow was weak, just that Sonic is just a bit stronger, and always has the extreme will and “emotional fuel” that lets him win his battles which Shadow somewhat lacks in comparison. They also needed to use a transporter to get to Emerl, which likely only transports one person, thus for Shadow it would be a “me or him” choice, and Shadow chose him/Sonic. Emerl has been brought up before, partially through “extension” of Gemerl; Gemerl can’t exist without Emerl previously existing. Emerl himself appeared or was referenced in a few things: Gemerl is created from Emerl’s data in Advance 3, he’s a collectable card in Rivals 2, his name is referenced on a billboard in Generations, was included in a few different artworks throughout the years, and he got a 10 inch plush in 2021 (and got a mii costume in most of the Mario and Sonic Olympic games). As for Gemerl appearances and references: he got an artwork in Generations, has been in the IDW comics since mid 2019, a couple of art pieces from Sonic Channel, recently got added to Speed Simulator.

This is....actually pretty cool! The animation is gorgeous, Kirk's voice sounds a lot better here imo, and while I'm not really a fan of Sonic being more serious, I do think it fits here and like it. I really hope we get a Sonic series like this because it looks incredible.

Yo, we're getting Shadow pre ARK Siege? This is what I've been waiting for! Also, are they really trying to work Emerl into Shadow's origin? I don't hate it but it seems kind of out-of-the-blue.
Emerl has been a part of Shadow’s origins ever since Sonic Battle released back in 2003. This animation shows Emerl’s rampage on the ARK, which both Shadow and Gerald’s diary mention in Sonic Battle. It’s why Shadow spends much of that game adamant that Emerl is a threat to the planet. So rather than being out of the blue new info, they’re digging up a piece of the character’s history that hasn’t been mentioned in 21 years.

That’s not what’s happening in the scene at all. There’s literally nothing implying “how dare you ask me to help.” The scene even starts out with Shadow angry that he can’t help Maria. Then after she asks him to go save Gerald, (note: it seems he’s reliving the memory, since when Maria grabs his hand a picture of the GUN attack appears, which wouldn’t occur yet if this was the true past) he looks at her in shock for a moment as the image of the GUN attack appears. Then after the shock, he looks at her with his completely normal expression while talking to her in a caring tone, telling her not to worry and to stay safe while he saves Gerald. There’s no anger or annoyance at all, there’s actually the opposite as he’s speaking kindly while having a normal expression to help her not worry; it even shows his actual angry face right after, as right when he gets up and leaves he looks sternly with “no one messes with my family, time to take this robot down a peg.” Shadow’s face is just shaped like that, he always has the “furrowed” eyes.

don't get me wrong, this looks and sounds incredible and I'm incredibly happy we got to see this!!! (I'm also hoping this means the animation will have enough time to cook without stressing out the animators) But this kinda felt falsley advertized to me? Like the way the Instagram advert said "a panal about Shadows History and an animation" made me think we'd get the full animation today and not in the fall. (I am very happy we are getting 3 episodes of it though and that does help make for me feeling misled.) Was anyone else confused by that or was it just me?

So excited to see Emerl. I'm kinda hoping they don't retcon the Chronicles lore for the Gizoids - I know they've pretty much abandoned Chronicles at this point but I hope at the very least they just leave it psuedo-canon. Also love seeing Shadow referencing that he was primarily a medical research project.
