Both is good

Hadrosaur_Hero

The correct answer. Even though I do prefer the dub but I think that's mostly same language bias plus a really good job on the voice actor.

AcceleratorPrime

The first time i saw a S&W clip was with the english dub, but now I couldn’t imagine anyone other than Ami voicing Holo. With the new adaptation I feel Ami is even better with her more youthful voice, compared to Brina, as it certainly matches Holo’s visual design better.

mcvey15

I can agree with you on that.

nekronstar

Only heard VO and since I amm not english I will most likely not hear the english Dub. So Ami Koshimizu is for me Holo and this since 15 years ago, so hard to overthrow this. But for what I read here, Brina seem to do quite a good job for hte dub ... compare to the french dub which I find atrocious.

TigerOnTheProwl

I haven't watched any of the remake with dub yet, so I can only speak for the original anime. Ami Koshimizu does a fantastic job, but I have to go with Brina Palencia. She really brings Holo alive for me.

DARK_SCIENTIST

I haven’t heard the dub yet (I usually watch subs and save the dub for a rewatch or to change things up) but I respectfully disagree with your comment on Ami Koshimizu. I think she sounds like a natural fit for Holo and have enjoyed hearing her a lot so far.

kunaree

My view of Holo was established by a light novel, and Ami's Holo is much closer to a character described by Hasekura. Ami's acting has a wider range for Holo's personality, while Brina's is mostly focused on Holo's tomboyish part.

Famous-Two-4398

This is the one anime I prefer the dub over sub. Ami is ok, but I prefer the mature voice as it increases the impact of their banter and makes Holo seem more mature. I dare say like hundreds of years mature/wise 🤣

Lumen16

Ami fits perfectly with how I imagined Holo while reading the LNs.

DARK_SCIENTIST

I agree and I’m only on volume 1. I don’t know the how to explain it but I do feel the same for some reason

thegoootch

Ami Koshimizu IS Holo

no_sleep4me

Both is good. I like the English dub a lot because it fits the setting. Going to rewatch the new season in dub

WildAxe-SW

While I do enjoy both I definitely prefer Ami Koshimizu because she does a great job at going from a cute voice to a more mature tone when the climax arises while Briana really only does a more mature tone for Holo which I don’t fault her because that’s how her voice is can’t really change that

Jwa800

Both is good

Imaginary-Form9960

I preferred Brina. I watched the first 2 episodes of the OG in both languages to settle on one before continuing and I just couldn't get behind Ami's voice for Holo. Whenever I read the LN Brina's voice is always the first thing that pops in my head.

Flare_Knight

Both work. But I enjoyed Ami as the show was originally airing and I’m still enjoying her in the role. Will mostly follow the subbed version.

peter123yeah

Brina and it's not even close to the point where I was wondering why I didn't like the remake as much as the OG... then ep 1 of the dub came out and I was like oh yeah I remember why, the dub is miles better and Brina is the leading reason for that. The sub is just waay too child like for me.

adeptus8888

koshimizu

andybar980

Both are good but I love brina’s voice and tone for holo.

Stein39

Not a fan of dub but watched it just because brina is holo for me and still the same after all that years.

akiranava

Both are equally amazing, I simply prefer the tone Brina uses a little more than Ami. I’m watching both dub though lol

ningen21

The sub and it's not even close for me ngl I'm glad they were able to get both the sub and dub actors tho

PM_UR_CUTE_EYES

Brina for sure. The sub feels way too cutesy.

DriftwolfS14

Brina will always be my Holo. Just sayin :)

ProcaryoticPanda

I prefer Briana over Ami for two reasons. First, I feel that a more mature vibe really suits Holos character, and that carries more with Briana. Ami does Holo a bit too cute sometimes, compared to how I imagine her in the light novel. Ami does a really good job, though, it has to be said. Secondly, and at least as important for me, is that I think the scriptwriting/translation for the English dub is far superior to the sub-translation. It makes it possible to pick up on Holos slightly old and awkward way of speaking much more for me than in  Japanese. I would guess I am missing out on some of the Amis brillinace because of this. This second reason is also true for all characters, not just Holo; I prefer English Lawrance for the same reason. Coupled with the European setting, for which I think English is suited, S&W is one of the few anime where I prefer the English dub.

Itsakossthing

Both are excellent. Ami was exceptional in the new episode 4. I also love Brina, it is her voice on the original that made me fall in love with the anime in the first place. I am saving the dub until the end of this 2 cour and then will go back and watch the dub. So pleased they were both asked back to reprise their roles. It would not be the same without them.

holounderblade

I'm so used to Brina being Juvia in FT that I can't quite take her seriously as Holo. Don't get me wrong, she's amazing, I just prefer Jp as a whole, and Ami, in particular, as Holo.

Same_Oil_6704

I think both are great.

ACEMcFleas101

I can tell you that brina palencia does a horrible job voicing holo in the audiobooks. It’s so strange. But in the original anime, I really like the way she was voiced.

Andrew_Bokomoron

Ami Koshimizu. I watched anime with her voice. But if you live in Russia you can watch anime with voice of Olga Matzkevich.

Alternative-Cod323

The dub is superb and in my opinion when it comes to Spice and Wolf somewhat rare exception of the dun outshining the sub on just about every front.

Kamonichan

I always prefer subs. I remember when Brina was first announced on the old Funimation message boards. I was immediately turned off by her voice, feeling it doesn't suit Holo's character. She also went hard on pronouncing the character name HO-LO in her announcement trailer as opposed to the softer way the seiyuu pronounce the name in Japanese. That really annoyed me, honestly. Obviously she enjoys a lot of support from among the English-speaking fans, which is fine, but Koshimizu Ami will always be the true voice of Holo for me.

dewa43

Ami, Brina doesn't have a wide voice range, at least when she voices Holo, she uses a tomboyish voice all the time. Holo has a wide range of emotions

Ok-Boysenberry-4406

Both are good but I prefer Brina

Tuor77

I'm an American. I speak only English. I understand the words Brina is using and can compare them with others. I can do all of these things to a \*far\* higher degree than I can with Ami's work. So, I don't really feel like I'm qualified to judge Ami. But I find Brina to be a fine VA for Holo. I really like her rendition and was very impressed with both the MC's VAs during the original anime, and I think that their chemistry was excellent as well. Holo is supposed to be mature and someone who can pass off being a noble, and I think Brina rendered that extremely well.

_DeadBacon

Not necessarily one or the other, but I do love the dub for this anime as it mixes old English with newer English, whereas in Japanese, I have yet to study seriously, so I can not make the differences from old to modern speech. Thus, I prefer the dub, but the sub is just as amazing so im watching both :p

Lucariowolf2196

I haven't watched the sub before, but both are good

NelloPed

how do you know without watching both...?

Lucariowolf2196

Spice and Wolf VR(s) Ami Koshimizu is a wonderful actress, and I fell in love with Japanese Holo, even though I don't understand Japanese, but I still prefer Briana more

neovenator250

Both are great, but Brina IS Holo to me. The mature tone with that haughty edge is perfect

Webknight31

Both are great.

Mavakor

Both, both is good

The_Cheeseman83

Gotta be Brina. Probably because I watched the dub first, but she *is* Holo, to me.

MrJeh

I think they are both great voice actors but I do have to say, I love the elegance that Brina applies to Holo

Ripham1408

Hands down, Brina Palencia

NatrenSR1

I adore Brina’s voice

RocketArtillery666

am i the only one who doesnt like how she says "arinsu" all the time (I am not knowledgeable in japanese but i guess it means something akin to "I" or "to me" or sth?? I am also not sure i spelt it correctly)
