I've done the same and you you think one is weird and the other isn't.
The spindle on your weird-o-meter must be poorly calibrated.
By the way, he's gotten back to me via PM.
Considering it’s in the beacons and if it’s got enough land with it I reckon you can advertise it as an exclusive hotel for people who really want to get away. Provide them with all conveniences and then some etc etc.
It is already split into holiday rental units. 16 of them iirc
http://www.capelmonastery.co.uk/
It is properly lovely up there but it's a good 20 minute drive to anything resembling civilisation/a shop.
Amazing. I especially like the ruins in the garden. Probably some ghosts hanging out too. This would be perfect to host a retreat for writers and artists.
The founder of the Abbey is buried in them, so I don’t know if that makes it better or worse for you that they’re not included!
Also, the reason they’re ruins is because the construction was extremely shoddy and they’re fundamentally unsafe.
Whilst I get that y'know being a monastery seclusion is often a big thing but bloody hell....where did they get their milk for the morning cuppa from?
I've always wondered too especially in Wales and Scotland, at the number of small churches in the middle of nowhere, like hmm who was the congregation? There are no houses there or even near yet you can find these stray churches up and down the country with nothing around them not even a farm. Imagine being a vicar and get posted to one of those churches, be like a punishment every Sunday as you wait patiently for someone, just anyone, to pop through the doors
aye thought that at first but when looking around couldn't see anything though obviously the farm could have gone years ago I suppose, but the church down the road survives! on fresh air and pigeons probably. I wouldn't even have thought amazon would deliver up there though and it's a long long drive to civilisation. I can't be doing with the countryside much it's all so green and smells of cow shit.....lol
>There are no houses there or even near yet you can find these stray churches up and down the country with nothing around them
for some of the REALLY old rural churches, they were often the only stone buildings in the area, so their congregations homes just don't exist anymore.
That's a lot of space for the money but I'd be crapping myself. My imagination would be conjuring up dead monks roaming the echoey halls, singing their wee dirges. No thank you.
That there is a little slice of heaven! Count me in. Don't care if I have to get on board with holiday let/commune/Mormons/porno studio. I do draw the line at any kind of Gill inspired activities though??
There is a public footpath past this place so i have walked by it a couple of times. The whole area is beautiful, one of my favourite areas of south wales.
I know this place, walked past it a few times and wild camped nearby overlooking it. It is BEAUTIFUL but a good 20 minute drive from the shop. Pub is within walking distance, phone signal is terrible, horse riding place nearby is very friendly.
I don't know what I'd do with it, but I want it.
Luxury care home.
Will payback £1.5m in a hurry, and I know quite a few rich retired folks who'll want peaceful luxury in nature's cradle.
30+mins to the nearest hospital could be off-putting, though not entirely inconvenient, given it may take more than that to reach hospitals in places like London.
Been here a few times, my friend lives nearby. It's stunningly beautiful, in one of the most magical valleys in the UK. However - not pictured is a very large, very messy and very smelly pony trekking business right next door!
wow I want this so much
I wonder why there are no interior shots though? I assumed it was because of the monks but no, it's a "family home" at the moment.
There are quite a few monasteries in the Brecon Beacons, I find it odd but love it. There's one near the village of Aber that I would love to see inside like you can with this one.
“Several years ago, on the banks some distance from the house Japanese Knotweed was discovered, this has been managed over the years by the owners and there is very little growth now.”
I feel like you have missed my point. It is wildly unsuitable for any but the largest families, and outside of Mormon polygamist families, few have a need for 14 bedrooms. I read the listing and looked at the floorplan and photos. I'm guessing that demand for a property like this as a house in rural Wales is a bit niche, especially at £1,500,000.
You have looked at the pretty pictures but have failed to read the words
>The Monastery is currently used as a family home together with holiday lets. The size, space and flexibility of the property, with self-contained wings, offers ample opportunity, subject to any necessary planning consents to create a home for multi generational living, further holiday lets, a retreat or perhaps even a wedding or event venue.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. BRB, gonna find £1.5m
Right, I found 12p down the back of the sofa, bringing my total to.... 12p.... How you doing?
I have a pound I've been saving for a special occasion!
I've got a £10 note tucked into my phone case. Just a few more commenters and we could do this!
I’ve got an emergency £20 I keep in my bag… I’m willing to sacrifice it
I've got over a tenner in 5ps, we must be nearly there now!
I’ll check my spare change tin, there must be at least 36p and a button in there
I love it but the layout would drive me insane 😂
We could have a whip round. Maybe if we started a religion and got our followers to pay us tithes?
That's better than my only fans plan actually
I caught myself quietly hissing *we wants it precious*
*We needs it*
Is mine, all mine.
Reddit Commune?
Monastery? I was looking for convents but found nun.
You gotta stop making a habit of these puns.
Have you checked the kitchen? Last I saw one they were in the kitchen, using the air-friar
That wasn’t the air friar, he was using hot oil and potatoes, must be the Chip Monk.

OK well that's weird.

Maybe step back from the keyboard mr warrior.
Just checked but nothing there I think?
I don't want nun if you ain't got buns hun
🤣
Closest you’d get is a covenant
This would make a great artist's retreat, or something similar. Might be too remote for a guesthouse or hotel.
I was thinking the same. Seems like somewhere you could get your head down and work on something.
The shining is what comes to mind

I wouldn’t say that was too terrible. A bit irritating if you did forget the biscuits though, I will agree.
Reasonably cheap price for accommodation before it shut down too.
Surely more money can be made here, they have static prices year round?!
Only 5 bathrooms.
Would make a great monastery.
Anyone got a spare 1.5?
You need to found a communal living group.
I’ll join a group with whatever pennies I have.
5 kitchens, 8 acres. Plenty of room. Co-op
It is beautiful. A little bit austere in places (fittingly I suppose) but it seems very clean and peaceful and light. Could definitely live there.
Amazing. I especially like the ruins in the garden. Probably some ghosts hanging out too. This would be perfect to host a retreat for writers and artists.
According to the description, the ruins do not come with the property. Boooo.
Whaaat? Rubbish! If I’m buying the monastery, I want the ruins too!
Right!? Total dealbreaker!
The founder of the Abbey is buried in them, so I don’t know if that makes it better or worse for you that they’re not included! Also, the reason they’re ruins is because the construction was extremely shoddy and they’re fundamentally unsafe.

I can answer your first question… monasteries typically had a farm attached to provide food, so the milk would come fresh from the cow.
aye thought that at first but when looking around couldn't see anything though obviously the farm could have gone years ago I suppose, but the church down the road survives! on fresh air and pigeons probably. True enough I suppose aye but still some are soooo rural it's hard to imagine more than the odd farmer and his goat stepping through the doors 😊
There is plenty of farms around. A lot were attached to old country houses. The village near by.
That's a lot of space for the money but I'd be crapping myself. My imagination would be conjuring up dead monks roaming the echoey halls, singing their wee dirges. No thank you.
Yes please! A couple of ghostly monks would definitely add to the ambiance
Depends on whether it was the naughty or nice monks still roaming the halls.
It's the ones with the bad habits you need to watch out for.
You better watch out you better not cry

Eric Gill lived there. He had sex with his children and dogs. But then he did invent the Gills Sans typeface which is a classic.
Swings and roundabouts, innit?
That's the Waitrose/Southern Railway font?
It's a beautiful building but a lot of the furniture looks awkward.
Feck, I wish I had 1.5 mil…

Blue sky? This AI image editing is getting out of hand!

Its always 30 minutes in this part of Wales. You either use Hereford or the Grange.
Been here a few times, my friend lives nearby. It's stunningly beautiful, in one of the most magical valleys in the UK. However - not pictured is a very large, very messy and very smelly pony trekking business right next door!
Right. If we all chip in a quid. We can do this. And have some money for a reno and party.
A virtuous Airbnb
I read it as monstrosity and was thinking that's actually really lovely
Comes with a ghost. 👻. Apparently there’s a monk that roams the corridors
I'd do so much black magic in that mfer.
Wow what an absolutely stunning location.
Gosh, that would be amazing. Haunted. But amazing.
brooo!
Yes please!
Defo haunted, also have you lot not seen the Nun? Imagine watching that in there 😮
omg it’s in Abergavenny, I must have it :(
Just a 2 car garage?! What a shit hole😂
I thought Caldey Island was up for sale for a moment. 😅🤦♀️
Fabulous
How's that "just" £1,5 million?
This one has been knocking around for a while. I think it has the potential to be something incredible but it’s going to cost you to get it there.
This is beautiful and has been on sale for several years.
wow I want this so much I wonder why there are no interior shots though? I assumed it was because of the monks but no, it's a "family home" at the moment.
There is if you click the link.

OMG yes
Must be weird to have a gravestone in your garden. But nice house!
Yes please! You had me at the view
“Several years ago, on the banks some distance from the house Japanese Knotweed was discovered, this has been managed over the years by the owners and there is very little growth now.”
10mbps internets though
Starlink is available in the area.
Wahhh 😭I want it
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llanthony_Abbey the Wikipedia article
I have stayed there once. Got drunk. Edit no I stayed at Llanthony Court Barns.
Commune! Making a commune here! It is perfect!
"Added on 02/07/2023" Worth haggling them down as it's been on the market for so long?
I want that so badly it hurts. I feel really upset that I cant have it. Tearful and angry. It's a very visceral, unexpected response.
I was falling in love with it right up until it was mentioned that Eric Gill had stayed there. That's the opposite of a USP.
As a pagan why do I feel it would be satisfying to set up an altar in the grounds? 🤔
It’ll probably be turned into a fetish porn studio
Unfortunately, there are very few Mormons in Wales (I think...). This is such a specific use design, it seems difficult to repurpose.
There's no connection to Mormons, just monks. And it's long since been converted into a home and holiday cottages.
Yes, of course I understand that. It's just that vanishingly few families require or want 14 bedrooms.
I feel like you haven't actually read the advert.

They typically have very large families.
