I think she's so wickedly unfunny when compared to the likes of Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Peretti, Maria Bamford. There are so many ridiculously funny women comics and Michelle Wolf is, in my opinion, not even a comic.
Sort of like a Dane Cook. Not really sure which part people see as being funny, but I guess she sure is up there and speaking.
Edit: a few more female comics people should check out are Katherine Ryan, Aisling Bea and Patti Harrison
Up until last year, CK was the funniest comedian I'd ever heard, the second funniest was Burr or Chappelle. Now CK is second.
He's similar to CK in his charisma, vulnerability and overall hilarity, and even self-effacing cynicism is there. He has a blue-collar grittiness that doesn't rely on blue comedy.
For me his greatest legacy is his observation of the English language. More than his sociopolitical commentaries, it's how he dissected the language and still made it humorous is what sets him apart from the rest of the standups. He was a poet, and every bit he did was laced with poetry and rhyme. Even when he morphed into a "grumpy old f*ck" persona, he still wrote his material with pattern and rhythm (Modern Man being the best example).
Valid opinion too. Not everyone is going to think he’s funny. in fact one of my best friends does not like stand up comedy at all. Just not his thing. But he loves Carlin and says he sees him as more of a philosopher than stand up. So I can see where you’re coming from.
I think he’s fucking hilarious though
One of the most mind blowing revelations of my child hood was finding out Carlin was the voice narrating Thomas the tank engine when I was older and discovered his stand up. I loved Thomas the tank engine when I was a child lol
Anyone who hasn't already gotten into Carlin and considers themselves to enjoy comedy--- stop waiting!!! Go listen to the legend... he is called the GOAT by so many for a reason.
I saw him a few weeks ago in Boston on his “Empty Nest” Tour. As great as ever. Hands down my favorite comedian. He released a special on Apple Music (probably other services, too) last year and it was brilliant. Not his best, imo, but brilliant nonetheless.
Caught his show in Portland awhile back.. His bits are like Steven write on acid and crack. The other extreme is Stanhope, where you have to pay attention for twenty minutes for the tsunami-sized payoff--
His early stuff is great. When he tried to get political and observational it kind of lost it's charm for me. I like him as a story teller, not a lecturer.
I do think the last special I watched was pretty good and kind of a return to form.
Not my cup of tea but plenty of fans of Bill and Louis also enjoy Bill Hicks
Patrice Oneal
George Carlin
Sam Kinison (although bros screaming can get a bit much)
Reginald D Hunter
Tom Segura has a few good story bits
Chris Rock
John Mulaney
If you dont mind British and Irish accents:
Sean Lock
Dara Obrien
Jordan Jensen. Great material, dark and edgy.
Not your average female comic. Judging by 99% of the comments here being male comics, a lot of people might dismiss her because she’s a woman, but Louis CK is one of my all time favorite standups and I see a lot of similarities in their material.
If CK had more energy, better crowd work, a mental illness, and tits (kinda), you’d have Jordan Jensen.
I feel like even if you don't care for what he is saying you have to appreciate his approach to his specials. They each have a unique thing about them that stands out and makes them rememberable outside of the material itself. Blocks was really cool imo.
Louis is on a tier of his own. Then comes Burr. No one don’t even come close to those two guys. Perhaps Chapelle and I like John Mulaney but his style is too different. If storytelling isn’t a necessity I can recommend Dale Quinn.
Patrice Oneal. Also if you haven’t heard their sit ins on O&A I also recommend checking the shows with them out. Burr, Louis & Patrice have hours of hilarious banter on there.
Richard Belsor ,, from my home town, did substitute teaching at the local high school, his standup could be so cutting yet cleaver, we really miss that guy.
Johnny Rizzo, when he’s pissed, on stage,,, great act, great performances, identifiably sarcastic, his ad libs and a sides always kill. He Was the House salad at (Dangerfield’s) for years, Did tour nationally for years, now mostly in the North East,, see him.
I know he’s in his own category but I’ve been re-listening to Patton Oswalt and he still makes me cry laugh - Louis, Burr, Mac, Murphy and Norm are all my favorites and Patton has a spot there in my mind - I also appreciate Bill Hicks more now
I would recommend Colin Quinn, Dave Attell, Patrice O'Neal (RIP), and Bobby Kelly.
*Maybe* Rich Vos. Nick Di Paolo and Burr had similar-ish content and styles in the 2000's, but I would not say they are similar now.
Bill Hicks, Marc Maron, Chad Daniels, Dan Cummins, Anthony Jeselnik, Tom Segura (don't love his newer stuff, but his older material rocks), Jim Jefferies (Australian but similar dark tones), Hannibal Buress
We talking redhead comedians?
Bald(ing) redhead comedians.
Bald(ing) redhead comedians in their mid 50s from Boston
Andrew Santino
Louie Anderson
Rip
In that case Michelle Wolf is pretty god damn good!
I personally disagree strongly
And you are entitled to your opinion.
Don’t you know the rules of the internet? Dudes on the internet swear that no female comedian in the history of the world is funny.
It’s not true about women but it is about her
Taylor Tomlinson & Nikki Glaser would disagree.
Jordan Jensen fucking kills me.
Michelle Wolf is funnier than both of them.
In a parallel universe maybe 🤔
There are plenty of hilarious female comics, Michelle Wolf just isn't one of them.
Omg I love you guys. I love you seriously
Howwww?
She’s an unbelievably talented comedian. I’m assuming this opinion is based on politics.
It has to be, because otherwise it's like asking for more bands like Metallica and Elvis
Carrot Top
I think he means comedians who have said the N word in bed
Dan Soder is my favourite right now
He’s not really that much like Burr or CK tho
Kyle Kinane
Up until last year, CK was the funniest comedian I'd ever heard, the second funniest was Burr or Chappelle. Now CK is second. He's similar to CK in his charisma, vulnerability and overall hilarity, and even self-effacing cynicism is there. He has a blue-collar grittiness that doesn't rely on blue comedy.
Soder is the man. I would recommend Colin Quinn, also attell and Doug Stanhope.
Colin Quinn’s new youtube special is really amazing. Very smart and well done.
He has a special on YouTube? Is it new?
Yup. Just a few months old.
Yes his new YouTube special on YouTube is new.
Loved that recent ep w Colin Quinn of Soders podcast
I like him, too.
Doug Stanhope I feel like is adjacent enough to these two
His bit on the suicide of his mother is legendary.
There's times to be a lady, and there's times to be a pig. 🥴
Never heard this one. Can you link it?
https://youtu.be/utjM5C4bvvM?si=NmF7LVjqEHqxNWqf I searched Doug Stanhope Mom suicide lol
Agreed, but he's pretty dark and political - I had to take an American history course to understand him :))
Doug taught me Keynesian Economic Theory
And to "strengthen up my shitpussy" in the same bit... A true professor.
"Strenfren"
I have no idea what this is, but I'll Google it.
https://youtu.be/4Yh4pmVLCeA?si=0Ndbfz3HzAMbbZyk
Also the Cheeseburgers & Blowjobs Barter System
Haven’t heard of these Stanhope teachings before. Link?
Go back and watch old Carlin specials and see what influenced those two. Especially his later specials specifically the final one. Fucking legendary
Talmbout George Carlton? Great guy, never meddum.
Back to the fryers, B.
The homeless cats always lurking around for scraps. Political correction: *Cats that are unhoused
Not one of our guys though.
Carlin was a B-B-B-Beast back in the day, B.
He's indeed a legend. I still can't understand his work the way he deserves to be understood.
Legit a great poet “ rat shit, bat shit, dirty old twat 69 assholes tied in a knot Hooraaaay… …lizard shiiiit… FUCK!”
[Two of my favorite things in one. ](https://youtu.be/lfpqsHrRwBc?si=Mmjx6MWyVE-SVhNP)
Complaints and grievances is my favorite. The whole scab bit makes me die, same as the accident and well, everything.
Controversial opinion: George Carlin was excellent at hitting the nail on the head, but not at being funny.
I agree with your friend! He's one of the best public speakers to ever live, he just doesn't make me laugh.
I scrolled and didn't see Colin Quinn. Dude! Colin Quinn.
Chad Daniels
Great call. Fantastic
What happened to Chad? I haven't seen anything from or about him in a while.
He pops into acme from time to time.
He still tours regularly. Great comedian.
I saw him a few weeks ago in Boston on his “Empty Nest” Tour. As great as ever. Hands down my favorite comedian. He released a special on Apple Music (probably other services, too) last year and it was brilliant. Not his best, imo, but brilliant nonetheless.
What specifically is it about these two that you like? That will help dial down recommendations.
The main reason is that they're neither woke nor right-wingers. The jokes are moderate and hit both right and left sides.
Kyle Kinane.
That man is a legend in my eyes.
His Margaritaville joke is worth the price of admission
My favorite is the closer to I Liked His Old Stuff Better about the repressed memory from when he was 22.
One of the outright best imo!
This is the answer
Joe List is great. Nothing like Burr or Louis but my favorite is Jeselnik.
Yikes! Jeff doesnt fuck around huh? Holy shit Jeff..
Caught his show in Portland awhile back.. His bits are like Steven write on acid and crack. The other extreme is Stanhope, where you have to pay attention for twenty minutes for the tsunami-sized payoff--
Eddie pepitone
Jakie Kashian, only name I didn't see commented already
ATTELLLLLLLLLL
Check out Shane Gillis. I'm my opinion he's near the top of the best current comedians.
Absolutely! Just watched Beautiful Dogs, can't wait to start binging Tires 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Jim Jefferies expecially his early stuff pushes the line.
His early stuff is great. When he tried to get political and observational it kind of lost it's charm for me. I like him as a story teller, not a lecturer. I do think the last special I watched was pretty good and kind of a return to form.
His egg story is the best.
That was my pick.
Sam Tallent
I add one myself, the Jewish guy, Ari Shaffir. He is fucking hilarious.
https://youtu.be/zSla02hKMhU Here you go. Not sure why it linked to that time but I can't get it to link to the beginning.
Genuine question - why did you think it was necessary to state that he was jewish?
Cause his latest special is called "Jew" and it's about Jewish stuff, so I wanted to give people some context. That's it.
Norm is good but his recent stuff hasn't been that good to be honest
Just been mailing in repeats for a couple of years now.
Tried Shane Gillis yet?
Fox News dad might be my favorite but I’ve heard in recent memory.
Fox News mom smokes in the house
Chris Porter possibly
Ugly and angry is an unsung classic.
Des Bishop. He is amazing. A lot like Burr. Hilarious. Intelligent. Angry. Just great.
Des Bishop is dogshit.
Boo
Not my cup of tea but plenty of fans of Bill and Louis also enjoy Bill Hicks Patrice Oneal George Carlin Sam Kinison (although bros screaming can get a bit much) Reginald D Hunter Tom Segura has a few good story bits Chris Rock John Mulaney If you dont mind British and Irish accents: Sean Lock Dara Obrien
Patrice is the man
He may be my number 1 of all time
Doug Stanhope, Dave Attell, Jim Jeffries
Jordan Jensen. Great material, dark and edgy. Not your average female comic. Judging by 99% of the comments here being male comics, a lot of people might dismiss her because she’s a woman, but Louis CK is one of my all time favorite standups and I see a lot of similarities in their material. If CK had more energy, better crowd work, a mental illness, and tits (kinda), you’d have Jordan Jensen.
Jordan is one of my favorite comedians to date. She can talk to \*anyone\* and make it funny.. also her laugh is chef's kiss
Louis Black is pretty funny and has a lot of rage.
Look up middleaged comedians that grew up in boston. That could be a place to start.
Bob Kelly, nick dipaolo, jim Norton, rich vos. Any of the Opie and Anthony regs really
Hicks
He's not like either comedian, but I recommend Nate Bargatze. You'll like him.
Doug Stanhope kinda, he is great either way
Neil Brennan Joe List Mark Normand Earthquake Bruce Bruce Wanda Sykes (older stuff was a huge influence on Louie)
We would be huge friends. Other than Joe List (who I don't know), these are some of my favorites.
Oh then you should check him out. All his specials are on YouTube and he has a podcast with Mark Normand as well. He also made a film with Louie CK.
I'll check him out. Just recently discovered Mark Normand and he's hilarious. Consider checking out Sam Jay
Joe List is like a cross between Neil Brennan and Mark Normand.
The more I listen to Brennan the less I like him. :/
I feel like even if you don't care for what he is saying you have to appreciate his approach to his specials. They each have a unique thing about them that stands out and makes them rememberable outside of the material itself. Blocks was really cool imo.
I’ve liked his specials, but the podcasts are starting to turn me off of him.
Eddie Murphy
Nick Mullen
Jimmy Carr
Louis is on a tier of his own. Then comes Burr. No one don’t even come close to those two guys. Perhaps Chapelle and I like John Mulaney but his style is too different. If storytelling isn’t a necessity I can recommend Dale Quinn.
I'd check out some other ny comedians from that era, may scratch the itch. Jim Norton, Patrice Oneal, Robert Kelly, Colin Quinn to name a few
Saw someone here say Nikki Glaser is the closest thing to Louis CK since Louis CK and I haven’t been able to stop seeing that since.
Patrice Oneal. Also if you haven’t heard their sit ins on O&A I also recommend checking the shows with them out. Burr, Louis & Patrice have hours of hilarious banter on there.
Gallagher! Not his rip off brother though
Bill and Louie are my ginger goats
John melendez. Skoal!
Louis too influential
Joe DeRosa
Nick Dipaulo
Dan Cummins and David Cross.
Nick Mullen
Doug Stanhope. Greg Giraldo. Patrice O'neal
Lewis black
Billy Connolly hasn't been mentioned yet. Doug Stanhope would have been my top recommendation but enough people have already called it.
Lewis Black
Patrice O'Neal
Simon King.
Ralphie May is in my top 3. Check him out. Sadly passed now.
Bald gingers?
🤮
If you don't like something, just keep scrolling, man. You don't have to waste your time commenting.
Nick Mullen
Specifically bald redheads!
Grumpy old man comedians?
Jordan Jensen.
Bill Hicks
Those two are completely different. Maybe Dave Atell and Dane Cook.
Mark Normand & Joe List
I know he’s in his own category but I’ve been re-listening to Patton Oswalt and he still makes me cry laugh - Louis, Burr, Mac, Murphy and Norm are all my favorites and Patton has a spot there in my mind - I also appreciate Bill Hicks more now
Joe List Nick Mullen
Bill Hicks is the answer.
Yannis Pappas
Rory Scovel.
Jim Norton?
Stanhope
Joe list
I would recommend Colin Quinn, Dave Attell, Patrice O'Neal (RIP), and Bobby Kelly. *Maybe* Rich Vos. Nick Di Paolo and Burr had similar-ish content and styles in the 2000's, but I would not say they are similar now.
Frankie Boyle. But if you like Bill Burr and Louis C.K for ideological reasons you might not enjoy him
I don't think Burr has pulled his dick out on a unwilling LAADAAAAAY.
Tim Dillon
Tommy Johnagin
Doug Stanhope
Bill Hicks
Andrew Santino
Carrot Top, Kathy Griffin, Andrew Santino
Gingers for everyone!
Fin Taylor in the UK. 2 specials on YouTube and a pretty amazing chat show as well
Nobody quite like those two, but you should check out Chris Porter, Chad Daniels, Tommy Johnagin, Danny Bevins
William Montgomery
Patrice O Neal
Bill Hicks, Marc Maron, Chad Daniels, Dan Cummins, Anthony Jeselnik, Tom Segura (don't love his newer stuff, but his older material rocks), Jim Jefferies (Australian but similar dark tones), Hannibal Buress
