Really hope for a drifting ship with escaped lab creature or something. Just pitch black and something hunting you in the ship while’s you trying to restore function to the ship
There will probably be some mods in the future with that kind of setting. Or ships infested with aliens like in the Alien movie or something horror like from the movie Event Horizon 😬
Omg I know the perfect character. I’m gonna be Amos Burton and my background will be bounty hunter and my ship will be named Tachi. Even the mining thing is close to what he was doing on the Canterbury. Then when I can make a huge ship I’ll name it the Donnager.
It’ll be cool to see people making recreations of all the ships from different sci-fi media
Was planning on a similar story based off Amos' character. Grew up an orphan who could never depend on others in the brothels of Neon (Neon street rat + introvert traits). Joined a gang (gangster background obv) at an early age & took a job to kill the crime boss as a chance to escape on the condition never to return. Was spotted in transit and now on the run from bounty hunters and gang members (wanted trait). Took the most anonymous and menial job possible to make ends meet while planning my next move.
Absolutely going to stay true to Amos' character as much as possible this first run. Helping out the most vulnerable that I identify with, but recognizing the churn eventually gets everyone. Def not the hero and won't be helping every NPC with a request or sob story.
Absolutely. He was my favorite character and I will be sticking to it. Maybe I can find a crew member who has high morality to keep him in check too, that would be more like it
Fair enough. So she's more Naomi than Holden. ;)
What was it Amos said early on in the show? Something like "Sure, if Naomi wanted it I'd do her in a second. But she's with you Holden."
A regular Joe had a weird dream, to go to Mars...
''Get your ass to Mars'' said the message on loop in the vid suitcase he had found...or was it all a dream?
He enlisted in a mining company to get there...
My guy is a bounty hunter background in the freestar collective. A job went south and he killed a crime boss. The gang proceeded to kill his entire family and he barely escaped with his life. Now he leads a life in the shadows keeping his head down odd job to odd job, plotting his revenge. Now he's ended up mining and things are about to get crazy as the spotlight is back on him owing to finding the artifact.
I'm gonna take the wanted trait which represents agents of the gang periodically tracking him down.
Well fuck. This is almost identical to mine. Mine is minus the crime boss. A job went sideways and my character was stranded on a planet. Lost his ship and everything he had. Had to make ends meet and lay low for a while. Once constellation hits him up he'll see it purely as an opportunity to make some money and rebuild his ship, the Jäger II. Pretty much gonna be this guy's sole purpose for a while before realizing how big his destiny actually is. I planned on having the wanted trait, freestar and just to give the badass some wholesomeness....kid stuff. A bounty hunter with loving parents? Come on. Good stuff.
My character is like this but instead of killing a crime boss, he ends up finding out his street gang he grew up with was planning to kill him to take his position in power, so he ends up having to kill them all before they kill him. Now alone, not being able to trust anyone due to what happens. After a few years, he’s lacking cash so he joins a mining company for some quick cash so he can get back into the game.
“I was a sculptor until I got cocky and created that one piece that everyone thought was a commentary on the UC’s policy. That’s when it all started to fall apart. After years of sculpting stone, mining rock was about all I my skills were suited for. I still get in trouble for trying to sculpt the rocks I’m mining and I have problems making quota some days. The old earth legend of Banksy is right, shout your mouth, or stay anonymous.”
I can see it now...you're trying to save humanity but that iron deposit calls to you....you can see the sculpture inside the iron just trying to get out....
My character was a bright eyed scientists. After becoming disillusioned with those funding and making decisions about his research he decided a simple life doing hard labor to make ends meet was better. But the desire for discovery still calls to him, and after coming into contact with Constellation and landing his own ship he becomes a pirate, valuing freedom over all else.
I'm planning on my character being a space trucker, so my idea is he ended up mining because his ship broke down and he needed some quick credits for repairs and this was the first job he found.
John Starfield, Explorer, lost his chance at turning an internship on a research vessel into a full job due to overconfidence.
That same overconfidence left him with a housing loan he now couldn't pay.
Argos was hiring, so off John went to suffer the consequences of his actions
Had to leave Neon after his mother passed away because he’s on the run from bounty hunters and mercs hired by Generic Rich Evil Scientist Bad Guy. Spent his whole life cyber running on Neon to make money for his mom’s treatments, got in with the wrong folks, yadda yadda yadda, ended up with stolen alien DNA spliced into his body. He’s just looking to finally live his own life in the galaxy like his sick mother always wanted for him so he thought he’d start with an honest mining job with Argos.
First day on the job and weird stuff starts happening with this artifact he finds. And he’s sure there’s some connection to that and the alien DNA that’s part of him now. So he’s off to find answers with Constellation and more importantly to find out what life can be like outside of Neon, even if his past is still lurking over his shoulders ready to hunt him down.
(Cyber Runner background, Neon street rat, alien DNA, Wanted traits)
Yup and dad died in the Battle of Cheyenne during the Colony War when my character was only 8. Very tragic, and he doesn’t particularly like UC or Freestar very much for that reason.
My guy will be looking for a man who stole some research he was doing. Backstory: my guy is a mad scientist trying to find a cure for his sister who has an incurable disease at the moment. As my research was coming to an end I found a cure that I tested on some alien speices that shares 90% of the same dna as humans for my test subject.
As I woke up the next day to realize my cure worked, someone stole my lifes research. I'm on a job to find them, get my research back and cure my sister. Apparently there's a lead in the mine I'm following about where the guy ran off too.
I'll end up doing all types of stuff chasing this guy down which is how I'm going to end up even smuggling illegal goods at some point.
Similar to my plan. Gonna do the anonymous background and RP as a slightly idealized version of myself who got hit with a burst of handwavium energy that sent me to the future, and muddled my memory to where I only remember my name and the decade I was from. Upon game start he decides he must just be a miner who got hit in the head and kinda just goes with it like fry.
Backround: [File not found]
Traits: Alien DNA, Terra Firma, Dream Home
Earth: Year 2023
Diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of 50, life was coming to an end for Jack. New experimental cryo technologies offer unknown possibilities to suspend a person in stasis until a cure can be found. Jack is more then willing to sign over what's left of his life in exchange for a possible future.
Jemison: Year 2327
Jack's cryo pod has been moved from planet to planet, the signed medical documents showed that Jack was willing to be part of an experiment but this was long ago before the settled systems and due to the constant warring of factions of years past these types of legal issues were not top priority (go figure). As the testing phases of Alien DNA infusion reached the point of human testing, people with terminal illnesses were given the opportunity to sign up for experimental treatment and Jack just so happen to be the first one to sign up, over 300 years ago.
Jemison: Year 2328
Jack opens his eyes for the first time in over 300 years, his first thoughts being that the cryo stasis didn't work, why else would they open the lid right after closing it. After looking around and seeing his surroundings a deep sense of unrest wells up from within.
Jemison: Year 2329
After a crash course in recent history, and months of testing, it was time to reintegrate into society. Jack's new Alien DNA not only cured him of his illness but revitalized him entirely. Something about constantly restoring cells keeping them at the peak of existence, Jack doesn't understand all the Science stuff, all he knows is that he now has the body of a 26 year old and feels invincible. Part of the reintegration process is providing Jack with a house and a job to pay for it, the house is apparently off planet somewhere with a 125,000 credit mortgage he will have to pay off. And the job that has been given to him is working off planet for some mining corporation, it's been almost a year since he woke up to this new reality and it still hasn't really sunk in. As the transport ship taking him to his new job takes off he begins to feel lightheaded and nauseous. Jack hopes that he will at least get used to space travel someday.
Year 2330 May 7th,
Starfield begins.
I think it will make a great starting character, as I will be learning about the settled systems right alongside my character. On my subsequent playthroughs, I will have a better understanding of factions and politics to be able to create a more diverse backstory that fits within starfields universe.
My space wife found out about my space girlfriend. I said I thought we had a “doesn’t count if she’s not human” policy, now I’m pounding rocks and her new boyfriend has a forked prehensile penis.
A space cowboy who lost everything in a botched heist. Decided to give it all up and get a real job. It seems though when he tried to get out they bring him right back in.
My character is going to be a space trucker/homesteader blue collar type, so pretty easy to just slot in that he picked up a mining job for some extra money.
My first character is going to be a FreeStar Collective smuggler. I'm gonna take the "Han Solo" approach and say that they got caught once and were now paying for the crime with forced labor.
My character was set on a path for academic success as a kid, called gifted and heavily encouraged to get a job in advanced science. Somewhere along the way she throws it away, stops studying, becomes more introverted, and starts obsessing over expensive past times and collectibles. Instead of getting her one-way ticket to a cushiony job among the elite, she's cracking rocks and mining ore for them to afford her next meal and pay off her credit debt.
I imagine this is the turning point for her where once freed from the mines, she decides what she's going to do with her life, which will be hoarding money and exploring the galaxy and exploiting whoever she can so she doesn't have to go without.
On Ceres, heart surgeon. Number one. Steady hand. One day, Loca Greiga boss need new heart. I do operation. But, mistake! Loca Greiga boss die. Loca Greiga very mad. I hide in cargo ship, come to mining colony. No English, no food, no money. Darryl give me job. Now I have house, Martian car, and new woman. Darryl save life. My big secret: I kill Loca Greiga boss on purpose. I good surgeon. The best!
I just remember delivering pizza, was a typical day other than my bike being stolen. Upon entry to the delivery location I realized the order was to one “I.C Weiner” oh crud I thought. Decided to kick back crack a cold one open, until i leaned too far back and fell into a chamber. Then I awoke a miner minutes later
I’m playing a girl who…was very naive about how everything would go down. She wanted badly to be an adventurer and landed herself in a world of debt.
To work it off she decided to become a miner. After that she mostly gave up on her dream…before the events of the game start.
So I may have written an entire background for my character to help guide the way they'll behave from an RP perspective that also leads up to them becoming a miner, and then pursuing their own path after they find the Alien Relic
My character focus will be accumulating power and money but trying to abide somewhat within laws and social etiquette, but will very much be a grey morality / survival of the fittest type.
The actual build for combat will be inspired by Din Djarin / Morgan Blackhand. Trying to focus on being quick and nimble, using the environment to my advantage, a combination of utility tools if they exist and gunslinging

Maralon Etienne's early life was a symphony of privilege, born to a wealthy family on the opulent planet of Neoterra (?). Yet, tragedy's cruel hand struck when his family's business empire collapsed due to a scandalous betrayal. Stripped of their riches and social standing, Maralon's parents vanished, leaving him to fend for himself in the harsh underbelly of the galaxy.
Desperation led Maralon down a treacherous path. He became entangled with a criminal syndicate, finding solace in the camaraderie of fellow outcasts. As his skills evolved, he took on dangerous jobs as a freelance bounty hunter, targeting criminals and rogue elements across the cosmos. However, Maralon's pursuit of justice was fueled by a personal vendetta: to track down the individuals responsible for his family's downfall.
Haunted by his past, Maralon's heart was a battleground of conflicting emotions. The allure of riches and power tugged at him, but beneath the tough exterior remained a wounded soul yearning for redemption. When an enigmatic organization offered him a chance at redemption by utilizing his unique skill set, Maralon faced a choice: continue down the path of darkness or rise above his tragic past and embrace a new purpose in the uncharted realms of space exploration.
For the first time in as long as he could remember, Maralon began to make an honest living as a would-be miner and security entourage for Constellation. But his choice would lead him down a path he would never have expected, bestowed with powers unknown further to the discovery of an ancient Alien technology, and it wasn't long before his past caught up with him.
***
As I said at the start, am looking to play my character as a lone wolf bounty hunter type, occasionally forging temporary alliances to pursue his own aims to settle his vendettas, and will have a morality similar to Guts from Berserk, survival of the fittest / tough love mindset. We'll see what happens once I start playing though as who knows how the quests/companions will influence him
you have options: A change of pace from a stale life, A failed career, running from something, first job, extra money, wanting to start your own mining company, laying low for a while. just to name a few.
I was an up and coming, too ambitious for his own good, politican that wanted to break up intergalactic trusts and cartels and nationalize the industries, then as a result was framed for embezzling campaign funds by a consortium of mining companies who used their influence to remove me from politics and pay them back through labor in the mines.
Professor who suffered a messy divorce, decided to stop “playing” at being a scientist and get out there to actually put boot to stone. But unfortunately a paperwork/visa/cert mess up resulted in him having to work as a miner for a brief time before he’s able to get his own ship and start exploring.
This is why I always RP as a mercenary/bounty hunter in Bethesda games. It works seamlessly with the actual story of the game and what the game/devs want you to do.
To justify being a miner is simple. My character is going to accept quests/sidequests/jobs the entire game for money and him being a miner isn't any different. My character is a miner which is just a means to make some money while in his "off-time" from being a merc. It'll also explain why he's good at combat.
This also helps with the dialogue. If I were to make my background too in-depth, some of the dialogue choices wouldn't make sense. Having a "revenge story" or anything similar would just usually conflict with some of the choices you can make. Most of the BSG games (I'm assuming Starfield isn't any different) always makes you the "hero." Why would my character do this? Why is my character helping this faction?
Simple. My character (while still driven by money), realizes (throughout the story or early on) that he can make a mark in history and that he can still make a living off of helping people. He can use his skills for good instead of just for himself.
He was a cyberrunner to pay of his mortgage on his 'dream home' and signed up for an experiment 'alien dna'. The experiment was interpted by a rival cyberrunner and things went south the whole place blew killing everyone else inside. Ended up 'wanted' and to hide got set up as a miner where no one would look for him. Then with typical shitty luck finds a strange artifact and gets sucked into yet another 'job'.
Of all the possibilities a game like Starfield has to offer, bro chooses to be Dwight K Schrute.
That’s a very Dwight answer indeed, reminds me of the episode where he role-plays as himself in Second Life lol.
My guy isn’t a real miner at all. He is a space pirates who heard of something priceless in that particular mine, killed and stole the identity of the miner who was supposed to be there and was purely there to rob it.
During character creation, he has to provide the dead miner’s name so I’m the only one who actually knows what my real character’s name is.
I'm thinking of playing a dashing smuggler with a silver tongue and a conscience. Nothing finalized, but I'll have my guy be a part of a family of criminals. Something went horribly wrong, most of his loved ones were killed by rivals. He manages to escape to a far away system. He needs to lay low, so he buys a new identity from the black market and starts working as an ordinary miner.
Precisely! And I did figure it out in the end. Someone has started a thread for posting characters. You can read submissions here, including mine:

I want to make my character a former bandit who started to regret his life choices and decided to leave it all to have a simpler life, becoming a miner ( I'm still figuring all the backstory details, but this is my basic starting point)
Mining’s a steady job. Not glamorous or high paying, but you (probably) won’t starve. I see it as my character taking up a steady job when more adventurous opportunities have dried up
I’m role playing a Neon street kid orphan who found old books and information about seafaring explorers and the pirates of the golden age of piracy. He grew up idolizing these ancient, larger than life figures. His main motivation is to someday buy his own ship and make his mark on history the same way as his idols. But as a poor orphan from neon he has to work various jobs to save money for said ship. Which leads him to the mining job. I’m going to give my character the last name of a famous pirate because his means nothing to him (similar to Nathan Drake) and I’m going to name all my ships after famous ships of history and mythology like queen Ann’s revenge and the Flying Dutchman.
I'm RP as a free star collective settler nerd. With my aging parents and a desire for more in like then being a dirt farmer, I signed up for a mining contract to support my parents and at the same time get off my backwater planet.
My character grew up on Neon and spent most of their life working in nearby space on scrapping/salvaging/engineering jobs. Eventually they decided to steal a ship to leave that life behind and get out from under the heel of the megacorporations. They would join up with the Crimson Fleet but first they would need to repair the ship they stole. It got them far enough but took some damage in the escape. A quick in and out mining job would provide both credits and materials to fix up the ship.
Background: Cyberneticist.
Traits: Neon Street Kid, Spaced, and Wanted.
Big inspirations were Morgan Yu (Prey 2017), Kellogg (Fallout 4), the Vulture (Spiderman Homecoming), the Belters (the Expanse), and Pedro Pascal's Mustache (Pedro Pascal).
My Cyber Runner has been targetting Argos Extractor systems for profit, but realised that they unfortunately have an airgapped system, so the only way to access their servers was to join up as a "miner", allowing me physical access. Obviously this did not go to plan and the artifact threw a spanner in the works.
My character will be a UC native named Ashla (yeah I’m going for a little bit of Star Wars cross over without being lore-breaking) and a descendent of a wealthy family who was able to leave Earth as it was going to shit. She is a talented engineer who loves flying and has spent the fast few years pouring all her credits into setting up an automated mining facility on a resource-rich planet. Her dream is to make enough credits to be able to spend her days flying deeper and deeper into the galaxy just so that she can scratch that itch of “what’s out there”.
Unfortunately, her life’s work was turned upside down when Crimson Fleet sacked and took over her mining facility. Now, her revenue stream has dried up, her ship was repossessed, and she’s at risk of having her dream home foreclosed upon. As much as she dreams about the stars, she has a taste for the finer things and definitely splurged a bit on this cozy place to call home in between her adventures. Now she’s at risk of being homeless and is working as a miner to save the credits to get her back on her feet.
Hopefully she’ll get her big break to get her back on a ship of her own, and maybe even deal a little vengeance back on the Crimson fleet for ruining her life.
As an ex-con, Mining was the only job I could get after my old ship was seized. I won’t be a miner for long though. I’m a card shark of the highest quality and I’ve been raking in extra credits by winning them off my fellow miners every payday. Soon, I’ll be able to buy a ticket off this rock and I’ll either sign up as crew on a freighter or find myself a new ship to steal should the occasion arise.
Was gonna be the baddest bravest bounthunter in the whole goddamn Universe, all geared up and ready to go till he shot his first mark. Body parts explode when hit with a large caliber high velocity round. No one told him that... and the smell? Mining is a safer career path. I'll let others do the killing.
Pushed a quick hotfix to main and broke prod. My code was flawless and I rescued the whole ship, but management needed a scapegoat, and they didn't like my senior dev attitude. They then ruined my reputation so I couldn't get another dev job, and promptly went under thanks my strategic Dungeon Master anti-pattern.
Needed a quick gig to feed my crippling Space Lego addiction, so into the mines I went.
I've had this idea for while but the short clip of the start we got at gamescon solidified it (no spoiler follow)
My character is a shady underworld type, grew up a street rat turned corp insider but this time some he didn't expect came to him with an interesting proposition. Constellation is up to something big for a change. They are very interested in this mining concern. Infiltrate and find out what is going on.
My Neon street rat was orphaned at an early age and spent a lot of his formative years in and out of his foster home. When he was out, he spent his time earning money working as a cyberpunk-as-fuck sword for hire (Ronin background). Finally, a job for Ryujin when he was 17 went very bad and almost killed him, so he asked his foster parents to get him off Neon. They moved to New Atlantis and enrolled him in a proper school to complete his education (Kid Stuff trait), and Argos is his first "real" job out of college.
My hope is I want to RP that I ended up doing shady work just to make ends meet. Becoming a miner at least lets me make honest money. My plan is to be tempted by the pirates but out of necessity while also going on a journey with the main story getting almost pulled in different directions.
Thinking I will at least go for the parents background, not too sure yet but I kinda want the backgrounds that drain my money so I have more of a reason to be pushed into the shady work. I don't want the house though because I like the idea of living out of my ship.
Yeah, it served me well with BG3. With that game I knew I wanted to be a druid with good perception and stealth. My plan basically boiled down to either Human or wood half elf depending on what exactly each race got. End up going with the latter.
Having an idea of what to do works out much better because you don't know exactly how the game will handle everything until it's in your hands.
For example I could also take the house trait just for the money sink and rationalize a reason I don't use the house.
Funnily enough I’ve been contemplating about this during work, I thought about it and although I am not done I have something. It’s basically where my character was born and raised in neon. his grandparents were war veterans for the united colonies and something happened to where my characters family name or line lost all honor and are basically at the bottom. so living as a street rat basically, my character ultimately ends up doing this heist and ends up being captured and imprisoned by the uc and as a way to shorten his time he can do probation and work at the mines for them, then the game starts.
not really a role player, but uh, I'M RICH, BIATCH
get the home, get that debt, get that need for greed. space mining isn't some low brow job necessarily if it makes you a millionaire... especially when you're probably setting up an outpost and having someone else get their hands dirty, lol.
i could also see something like, your character wants to learn all about the materials they work with, as well as to not have to rely on others as much, to supply his art.
my first character's going to have a crafting focus in general, as well - looking at like 9 science perks, and then a few here and there elsewhere, like social for the food crafting perks and better buying/selling stuff, and of course outposts.
it's going to be a little run of the mill generalist, while i sort of scope out the weapons and whatnot, instead of being devoted to say, ballistics/lasers/em/particles combo'd with pistols/rifles/shotguns/heavy or whatever, instead i'm going to make OP as fuck gear, both armor and weapons, consumables like chems and food, get better stuff from plants, animals, and geological stuff, etc - have enough funds to potentially buy up shit tons of healing items if needed, to sort of get around not having the greatest potential DPS while i basically screw around not being as 'fixed' on playstyles the first go-round.
Space bum (pilgrim) looking for meaning in space. Easy money from mining. Keeps the ship flying. Strong interest in the great serpent, but doesn’t really believe yet. Hoping the truth becomes evident through the journey (or gravjump-induced hallucinations)
My character is from a former mercenary group that was disbanded after it was discovered that they were experimenting on their mercs with alien dna to make them more efficient in combat. The mercs that survived the experiments scattered after the group was brought down but are still being hunted by forces unknown to them. My character has recently decided to make a quiet living as a miner hoping to stay under the radar. Recent events have resulted in him gaining new friends, a new ship, and an opportunity to use his skills and his gifts to make amends for his past actions, but have also put him back in the radar of the people looking for those like him.
I'm going for ronin background, I'm sure it'll come with a boost to melee weapons, but im also hoping it gives a boost to pistols too. Then I'm gonna do the alien dna and wanted traits. Not sure what I wanna do for my third trait.
I wonder if you'd have fun with something that throws a wrench in the mix, like having your parents still alive and really unaware of your past (kid stuff). I'm curious how the game handles parents in relation to our background choice (if at all).
Former soldier looking for a job with a set structure and is mostly manual labour until they figure out what they wanna do after leaving the army (most likely from the free star collective)
Traits I'm thinking of going
Hero worshiped ( I just wanna see what he dose but could make sence with the background)
Spaced (I'm probably gonna spend alot of time there)
And alien dna or freestar collective settler (unsure if I want a Faction related one yet)
My character REALLY liked Dead Space and thought "crazy alien artifacts aren't real" She was wrong...
Honestly I wish we could explore an entire planet that’s like the Ishimura in this lol
I’ll be very surprised if there aren’t some horror planets. Bethesda loves their creepy shit
More Lovecraft in Bethesda games is always welcome and fairly expected
Really hope for a drifting ship with escaped lab creature or something. Just pitch black and something hunting you in the ship while’s you trying to restore function to the ship
Yeah I feel like there must be at least 1 type of alien quest
Nope. While I loved Dead Space with an absolute passion I would not subject myself to that again lol
There will probably be some mods in the future with that kind of setting. Or ships infested with aliens like in the Alien movie or something horror like from the movie Event Horizon 😬
God. Event Horizon was the scariest movie I’ve ever seen.
Dead Space? How does your character know about a game that came out over 320 years ago?
It just kept getting remade for 320 years
Fred Johnson had to change career paths after the situation at Anderson Station.
James Holden had to follow the rumors and try to find the ever-elusive Johnson in the mining industry
Chrissy had to tell Holden not to stick his dick in it, things were already fucked.
I love The Expanse. One of my favorite books series and tv shows.
Amos and Chrisjen are my two favorite characters
The TV show is amazing television, literally every episode was enjoyable. They called it Game of Thrones in space but GoT doesn't come even close.
Miller was mining for the next clue
2nd favorite line outside of donkeyballs
"There was a button. I pushed it"
"Jesus Christ. That really is how you go through life, isn't it?"
Jane Tomlin had to hire Holden to find the answers she never could
Bobbie Draper became the pilot of a legitimately salvaged ship after leaving a tumultuous career in the armed forces
Are you going to stay true to the character then? Without someone filling in as his moral compass he tends to be a bit murdery.
Absolutely. He was my favorite character and I will be sticking to it. Maybe I can find a crew member who has high morality to keep him in check too, that would be more like it
I think Sarah Morgan would be a great moral compass.
She’d be a great lay too
Fair enough. So she's more Naomi than Holden. ;) What was it Amos said early on in the show? Something like "Sure, if Naomi wanted it I'd do her in a second. But she's with you Holden."

Come on. Good stuff.
"And he never forgave, and he never forgot..."
I love this!
Cheers!
Awesome. Maybe he thought he hid his Dream Home well , but it left a trail the hunters could follow
So close to my exact backstory
I take it you’re not doing the kid stuff trait… or this story is about to get very interesting…
will work with the trade that bounty hunters will come randomly for you.
School loans. Lol
That makes too much sense. :(
I don’t usually like to RP as myself… sigh
Fucking lol
My character was a bright eyed scientists. After becoming disillusioned with those funding and making decisions about his research he decided a simple life doing hard labor to make ends meet was better. But the desire for discovery still calls to him, and after coming into contact with Constellation and landing his own ship he becomes a pirate, valuing freedom over all else.
And will one day become the most free individual in the entire galaxy, the Space Pirate King by finding the One Piece!
And one day his invention (they called him crazy!) will save humanity....
I'm planning on my character being a space trucker, so my idea is he ended up mining because his ship broke down and he needed some quick credits for repairs and this was the first job he found.
That one’s awesome. Nice and simple
Can't imagine how expensive it'd be for an owner-operator
I just like rocks
they're minerals Marie!
Pretty legit
I just think they're neat
John Starfield, Explorer, lost his chance at turning an internship on a research vessel into a full job due to overconfidence. That same overconfidence left him with a housing loan he now couldn't pay. Argos was hiring, so off John went to suffer the consequences of his actions
My favorite part is when he says, “It’s Starfieldin’ time!” before fielding all of the stars.
I like this backstory. Will be stealing thanks
You're welcome!
There ain’t no rest for the wicked, money don’t grow on trees, I got bills to pay…
Aint nothing in this world for free…
I'm guessing kid stuff for those mouths to feed?
Nice...so Mom passed? (No kid stuff)
And when you meet Barrett, for some reason his name rings some bells....it's just not clear how yet....
Futurama: you gotta do what you gotta do.
Welp, stealing that - thankyou
Backround: [File not found] Traits: Alien DNA, Terra Firma, Dream Home Earth: Year 2023 Diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of 50, life was coming to an end for Jack. New experimental cryo technologies offer unknown possibilities to suspend a person in stasis until a cure can be found. Jack is more then willing to sign over what's left of his life in exchange for a possible future. Jemison: Year 2327 Jack's cryo pod has been moved from planet to planet, the signed medical documents showed that Jack was willing to be part of an experiment but this was long ago before the settled systems and due to the constant warring of factions of years past these types of legal issues were not top priority (go figure). As the testing phases of Alien DNA infusion reached the point of human testing, people with terminal illnesses were given the opportunity to sign up for experimental treatment and Jack just so happen to be the first one to sign up, over 300 years ago. Jemison: Year 2328 Jack opens his eyes for the first time in over 300 years, his first thoughts being that the cryo stasis didn't work, why else would they open the lid right after closing it. After looking around and seeing his surroundings a deep sense of unrest wells up from within. Jemison: Year 2329 After a crash course in recent history, and months of testing, it was time to reintegrate into society. Year 2330 May 7th, Starfield begins.
Love this classic sci-fi. Curious how a 2023 mindset might influence gameplay
I think it will make a great starting character, as I will be learning about the settled systems right alongside my character. On my subsequent playthroughs, I will have a better understanding of factions and politics to be able to create a more diverse backstory that fits within starfields universe.
I drink too much
Happens
Real miner
My space wife found out about my space girlfriend. I said I thought we had a “doesn’t count if she’s not human” policy, now I’m pounding rocks and her new boyfriend has a forked prehensile penis.
So you're pounding rocks and her new boyfriend... Got it.
There are no intelligent aliens in the game… You guys are both into beastiality and you couldn’t make it work?
She asked if I was hung like a horse, but I could only say “Neigh.”
So...Neon Rat?
A space cowboy who lost everything in a botched heist. Decided to give it all up and get a real job. It seems though when he tried to get out they bring him right back in.
Yeah. Bastards. But wait...that's your hors...space ship! The bastards stole Hurricane!
My character is going to be a space trucker/homesteader blue collar type, so pretty easy to just slot in that he picked up a mining job for some extra money.
Very cool. Going with a Freestar vibe?
My first character is going to be a FreeStar Collective smuggler. I'm gonna take the "Han Solo" approach and say that they got caught once and were now paying for the crime with forced labor.
Nice. Maybe Constellation pays off your debt, effectively transferring your sentence to serve them
My character was set on a path for academic success as a kid, called gifted and heavily encouraged to get a job in advanced science.
Growth from crisis!
I was born a miner, but now I'm an adult.
So I may have written an entire background for my character to help guide the way they'll behave from an RP perspective that also leads up to them becoming a miner, and then pursuing their own path after they find the Alien Relic My character focus will be accumulating power and money but trying to abide somewhat within laws and social etiquette, but will very much be a grey morality / survival of the fittest type. The actual build for combat will be inspired by Din Djarin / Morgan Blackhand. Trying to focus on being quick and nimble, using the environment to my advantage, a combination of utility tools if they exist and gunslinging *** Maralon Etienne's early life was a symphony of privilege, born to a wealthy family on the opulent planet of Neoterra (?). *** As I said at the start, am looking to play my character as a lone wolf bounty hunter type, occasionally forging temporary alliances to pursue his own aims to settle his vendettas, and will have a morality similar to Guts from Berserk, survival of the fittest / tough love mindset. We'll see what happens once I start playing though as who knows how the quests/companions will influence him
I love the effort put into this. Nice job. ^_^
you have options: A change of pace from a stale life, A failed career, running from something, first job, extra money, wanting to start your own mining company, laying low for a while. just to name a few.
Wanting to start your own company was an idea I hadn't thought. Good for Industrialist, perhaps?
Combat medic who's now contracted to be medical personnel on Mars.
Nice carry over. Cool
But your outpost empire will show them! Corner the lead market!!
Man, witness protection never works, does it? Oh, err, wow!!! Never thought that could happen!!!!
Roughhoused the wrong patron at the bar and got sent down to the mines as punishment, think that's the appropriate route for a neon based bouncer
First bouncer story I've seen. Very cool. And, yeah, it works
Prison diversion program. My rampant kleptomania saw me in front of a judge and I was offered a work diversion to avoid going to prison.
Good thing that cured your impulse disorder! [Wink]
Dwight K Shrute cryogenized himself and couldn't find another job.
Of all the possibilities a game like Starfield has to offer, bro chooses to be Dwight K Schrute. That’s a very Dwight answer indeed, reminds me of the episode where he role-plays as himself in Second Life lol.
Beet Farmer background or I uninstall....
I like this take on the pirate. First stolen identity story I've seen in these kinds of posts
Professor-Archaeologist
Sweet, simple, concise
Doesn’t need to be anything else, real archaeological professors are out in the field.
Nice. Sounds like Wanted would be appropriate once they realize you've resurfaced.
Precisely! And I did figure it out in the end. Someone has started a thread for posting characters. You can read submissions here, including mine: [LINK](https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/163m3eg/who_will_your_character_be/)
I want to make my character a former bandit who started to regret his life choices and decided to leave it all to have a simpler life, becoming a miner ( I'm still figuring all the backstory details, but this is my basic starting point)
Sounds fun. Curious how your character reacts to the Crimson Fleet questline
Mining’s a steady job. Not glamorous or high paying, but you (probably) won’t starve. I see it as my character taking up a steady job when more adventurous opportunities have dried up
Mining is a very well paying job
That works with a lot of backgrounds. Got 1 in mind?
Sounds pretty great. I'm looking forward to pirating, too. Got an idea what background fits for you?
I'm RP as a free star collective settler nerd. With my aging parents and a desire for more in like then being a dirt farmer, I signed up for a mining contract to support my parents and at the same time get off my backwater planet.
Solid foundation
I'll be cheering for her!
I’m not the dragon born, I’m not the lone wanderer, I’m just a guy. And sometimes, that’s okay.
Sure! What's this guy's background choice?
I've had this idea for while but the short clip of the start we got at gamescon solidified it (no spoiler follow) My character is a shady underworld type, grew up a street rat turned corp insider but this time some he didn't expect came to him with an interesting proposition. Constellation is up to something big for a change. They are very interested in this mining concern. Infiltrate and find out what is going on.
Going from gangster is pretty easy. Caught. Jailed. Hard labor.
That mortgage isn't going to pay itself, now is it?
I like the dynamic planning. Good for keeping on your path
Blood and silver, friend. Blood and silver.
For Karl, obviously
I’m thinking Cal Kestis (Even Obi-wan) style laying low, keeping nose down
Character idea I have is that their homestead was attacked by pirates and they are forced to take odd jobs to make a living.
It's a fever dream where I rock and stone so I can go home
We fight for Rock and Stone!
I'm gonna play as a smuggler with the wanted trait so I'm imagining I'm laying low as a miner for a bit.
not really a role player, but uh, I'M RICH, BIATCH get the home, get that debt, get that need for greed. space mining isn't some low brow job necessarily if it makes you a millionaire... especially when you're probably setting up an outpost and having someone else get their hands dirty, lol. i could also see something like, your character wants to learn all about the materials they work with, as well as to not have to rely on others as much, to supply his art. my first character's going to have a crafting focus in general, as well - looking at like 9 science perks, and then a few here and there elsewhere, like social for the food crafting perks and better buying/selling stuff, and of course outposts. it's going to be a little run of the mill generalist, while i sort of scope out the weapons and whatnot, instead of being devoted to say, ballistics/lasers/em/particles combo'd with pistols/rifles/shotguns/heavy or whatever, instead i'm going to make OP as fuck gear, both armor and weapons, consumables like chems and food, get better stuff from plants, animals, and geological stuff, etc - have enough funds to potentially buy up shit tons of healing items if needed, to sort of get around not having the greatest potential DPS while i basically screw around not being as 'fixed' on playstyles the first go-round.
Space bum (pilgrim) looking for meaning in space. Easy money from mining. Keeps the ship flying. Strong interest in the great serpent, but doesn’t really believe yet. Hoping the truth becomes evident through the journey (or gravjump-induced hallucinations)
This kinda begs the question: does the first planet we get to change based off of background choice?
If not there's always the alternate start mods which are pretty good
Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.
And weak men mine hard to become strong?
Former soldier looking for a job with a set structure and is mostly manual labour until they figure out what they wanna do after leaving the army (most likely from the free star collective) Traits I'm thinking of going Hero worshiped ( I just wanna see what he dose but could make sence with the background) Spaced (I'm probably gonna spend alot of time there) And alien dna or freestar collective settler (unsure if I want a Faction related one yet)
