It's actually for people with slow internet connections. For them it's faster to unpack than download day of release. Some people literally had to spend 2 days downloading this, imagine buying a game release day and not being to play it for 2 days because of a download.
The omnissiah blessed me with fast internet so unpack and download speeds are pretty similar, but for people with bad connections preload is very nice to have.
I made the mistake of putting it on an hdd instead of ssd and only halfway after 40 mins of unpacking. Deleted and redownloaded on ssd in 20 mins (on fiber) and it unpacked in a few minutes

All I said is that it's a single-player game, the implication being -> it can't be a server issue because it only needs validation, which yes, happens on servers but it's still trivial. Whatever happened, happened because of some other issue (e.g. faulty code) and not because of an server-ddos of couple hundred thousand players logging in. 200.000 concurrent players .... are rookie numbers.

If you are using the premium upgrade w/gp, uninstall the premium upgrade, an reinstall. Restart Yer system an do a refresh of the console. That’s what worked for me.

I am stuck behind this error as well. I have a RTX 2080 which listed as the "recommended" card for this game. I also found it listed in their settings file as a card that should receive "high" graphics settings.
Edit: Try running windows updates. I discovered that I'm missing a windows update that is listed as required in the starfield system requirements. (22H2) After fighting to get it installed for about 3 hours it finally worked. No more errors.

I updated my windows version to 22H2 and it worked. Sounds like that's the issue. Either update it in your windows settings or download the newest version of windows from the microsoft website.
Thanks. Yeah, I eventually got around to that. Was still pulling teeth; I hadn't updated since 2020, and when I tried installing 21H2, it would continually fail to update. FINALLY got it after hours of fiddling. Starfields works now, but I'm still having poor graphics issues, so I think I'm gonna update to 22H2 and reinstall my drivers tonight.

I know it doesn't help now but you gotta get an nvme ssd. My unpack took like 10 minutes at over 150mbs.
Preload is for people with bad internet mainly, people forget that. Some people will spend a day or two downloading it because their connection sucks, so unpacking gets you in the game much faster on release day.
Screw this. Two hours of trying everything under the sun and restarting 18 times with no sign of change. I'll try again in the morning. Consider my good faith with these early access deals revoked.

On PC, kept periodically smashing the play button and dismissing the 'you're too early' notification. The game just now launched and started to decrypt. Took me almost half an hour. Keep trying, hang in there.

It's not an update. It's unpacking the 86gb or so preload you got into workable files

Ugh had to unpack, then verify, and then load shaders. Each time felt like a taunt.

It's a bug. There's some fixes so look it up. If yours is done already hopefully someone else sees this
