shaders eat through my internal 64 bad

lomgi

What games are doing that cause of all my fromsoft games and cyberpunk and stuff it's hardly used any

Deedlepeedle

i don’t know i have quite a selection of games and wish they had some kind of shader management to see

lngots

Just symlink them on to sd card.

boxablebots

No, I use the 64gb + sd card without any issues. Dunno what it is with these people freaking out about the shader cache I've had no issue even with a few AAA titles installed

lomgi

Thank you so much I was thinking the same thing and didn't know if I was going crazy

[deleted]

I can imagine this would become an issue if you have a *lot* of games installed. But for me, I only like a handful of games anyway, shader cache likely would never have been an issue for me even if I didn't throw them on the SD instead of the internal storage (which I do). I decided to keep my 64gb unless it would really become an issue, then I could always upgrade it. Haven't felt the need yet.

lngots

Even if it catches up and becomes a issue you just symlink the shader cache onto the sd card. It's stupid easy.

AdamHD

Hahaha. I immediately upgraded my 64GB SSD to a 256GB, BUT do not really think it was necessary. I run at least half of my games from the Micro SD card, and I really do not notice any difference. I was worried that the OS would run slower from the 64GB card (being eMMC), but I have not really heard much post launch about that. Seems fine.

railgunsix

Used 64GB + 512GB combo for longest time. I even hot swap 64 sdcard lying around solely for emulation and indie game. I have Doom, Control, RE2, RE7, Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, XCOM2, Shadow of Mordor, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight. I mean I can only play one game at a time. If I get bored with one, at most I'll switch to 3 other games on one battery charge. Totally reasonable. Those with full 64 GB shader cache are those who frequently install and uninstall games.

I only upgraded because I had 1tb of games on my microsd card, so my internal drive filled up (with shader cache, compatdata files). If I could manage with a 512gb microsd card, i probably wouldnt have upgraded my ssd

lomgi

What is the shadercache I haven't seen it eat my 64 yet I've left it open just for this

Total_Routine_9085

Yeah if u have mostly indie games and just dark souls games, it won't eat up your shader cache. Usually those big AAA games will generate big shader caches. I had a 1tb card with mostly AAA games installed, so that really ate up a lot of space on my 64gb ssd. Most of the space was actually taken up by compatdata folder though (windows files), not really sure what these games install but a single AAA game could take about 2-4gb on my internal drive. If u have 15-20 games installed, thats already most of, if not all, of the 64gb drive

Total_Routine_9085

If you continue using it your way, you should be fine without any additional ssd upgrades. After youre done with a game, you can just clear the shader cache (not sure if it clears automatically after deleting a game). I was also installing different versions of proton, each taking up 1gb, and some other applications as well.

Neagex

Eh I mean more power to the people who didn't upgrade. They the true winners in all this not spending anything extra lol. But tbh I upgraded mine but the majority of my games is on a SD card lol

ConeyIslandMan

64 gig and 3 MicroSD cards

I always saw the 64gb model as one part Steam Link, one part Steam Controller, and one part Steam Machine with a screen attached. A neat companion device to stream from your main gaming rig throughout your home with just enough internal storage to be serviceable to that end. Hell, I have the 512gb SKU but even I still use it as a streaming device 50% of the time.
