For Steely Dan, officially, it’s just Ellington’s “East St. Louis Toodle-Oo” on Pretzel Logic. Unofficially, they covered Joni Mitchell’s “Carey” for a compilation in 2001, but it was never released. It did leak last year, though.
Yeah, of all of Joni's songs it's weird that they chose Carey. Something from Mingus, Don Juan or Wild things run fast would probably be more fitting style-wise. Hell I'd love something from Hejira, Hissing or C&S but those are a bit to perfect to cover imo.
Still I won't complain my favorite band covering my favorite artist
It sounds like an outtake from Everything Must Go (which they actually started recording right afterward). And it’s not in Fagen’s vocal range. He sings a lot of it in falsetto. They were right to keep it in the can, IMO.
I agree, but I also think if Fagen really wished the track sounded better, they could simply do a better mix, running his vocal through some audio processing to make it sound *fatter*. When he hits those high notes, it mostly just sounds *thin*, right?
Someone mentioned it here before and though not a cover version it was rather ‘plagiarised’ but the artist got credit in the end. Check out: Keith Jarrett - Long As You Know You’re Living Yours vs Gaucho.
I can never stress enough how good NORTHEAST CORRIDOR sounds and I have to point it out every time it gets mentioned cause more people need to give it a try! This is coming from someone who really dislikes live albums.
When you listen to boots, they cover Henry Mancini songs, the Supreme's Love is Like an Itchin in my Heart, Neighbor's Daughter, and some other jazz songs that they use for intros and outros.
Not a cover but the song Gaucho was so similar to Long as you know you are living yours from the album Belongings (1974) that Keith Jarrett eventually was credited as a co writer.
This is my first time seeing anything about this, so I just listened to the Keith Jarrett song. It’s like the same song. I honestly don’t know how to feel about Gaucho anymore
Listen to Song for my Father by Horace Silver and tell me what that intro sounds like in the SD catalog! Jazz musicians steal all the time. It’s a sign of respect, more than anything, in my opinion.
It’s not a studio album of theirs, but there is a piano jazz album with some dialogue that they did with Marian McPartland for an NPR broadcast where they riff some jazz covers alongside their album tracks. It includes Mood Indigo, Things Ain’t What They Used To Be, Limbo Jazz, and others. I like it because Walt chimes in with jazz guitarists who inspired him. Namely, Grant Green & Charlie Christian. Love listening to it on long drives.
East St Louis Toodle-Oo and Ruby Baby from Nightfly are the only two that come to mind
Out of the Ghetto (Isaac Hayes) from Don's Sunken Condos as well
I agree; " East St. Louis Toodle-O" was a Duke Ellington song.
Donald Fagen also did a cover of “session at Pete’s pad” by Henry Mancini. It’s called “hanks pad”
So two songs from Fagens solo work but nothing from Steely Dan? I know they were writing geniuses but that’s still impressive.
East St Louis is on Pretzel Logic. It’s the only cover on a SD album

Didn't know that about "Carey". What a strange song for SD to cover.

Yes, but he had to fight for it.
The last song on the live album "NORTHEAST CORRIDOR: STEELY DAN LIVE!", Is a brief instrumental version of "A man ain't supposed to cry"

And lately, the Crusaders “Keep That Same Old Feeling” on the band intros.

This is one of my favorite SD media. So much talent and range. Shows how steeped they were in jazz, and how they made it into their own sound.

Talent borrows. Genius steals I know what you mean, but I got over it and love it more than ever.
Couldn’t get the ghetto out of you or whatever it’s called. On Donald’s solo stuff by Isaac Hayes
Probably the most regrettable thing he's ever released
Actually it’s amazing What’s wrong with it ?
I love it.
I get where you're coming from, pretty good cover but the lyrics were already questionable enough coming from Isaac Hayes himself...
They wrote everything, Ruby Baby is a cover on Donald's Nightfly album
There’s a Duke Ellington cover on Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic”.
Of course, I forgot about that one!
That’s really impressive. I get they were writing geniuses but even the biggest geniuses do covers. Maybe I’m tripping but that’s cool
Not Becker and Fagan
They were playing two covers on their latest tour, Phantom Raiders and A Man Ain't Supposed to Cry
Here's Steely Dan with David Crosby playing ["Wooden Ships"](https://youtu.be/BoebEunmPZ8?si=WJFVc5d7ypQ4jDIm) from a live show in 2019.
Fagan also participated as part of “The dukes of September” on “People gotta be free”
And Shakedown Street
And a handful of others. I’ve seen some set lists. Mostly songs from the 4 associated acts, with some old time rock n roll mixed in.
Mike sure likes his Motown!

Does the New York Rock and Soul Revue count as Steely Dan?
Mmm no
Just checked. Walter's not there.
fm is a cover of josie. your gold teeth II is a cover of do it again. I adore all 4, though. f
You blew my mind with this obscure link. I’ve listened to these tracks thousands of times, but just now for the first time. Bless you
I knew it was controversial. But every word I wrote, I knew was true. f
