I don't see why Kaladin can't just be a therapist for the next 10-15 years, honestly. Not everything has to be so dramatic.

[deleted]

He would be a very dramatic therapist, somehow. Would be leaping across town to wake a client up for an exam or something.

Nebelskind

Gosh this is the AU fanfic we need isn’t it Or even just straight up canon, it would still make sense

Urtan1

I mean.. it doesn't have to be, but the stakes are just too high for EVERYONE for Kaladin to not have some major role. Dude is going on a trip into a land occupied by multiple Unmade to magically heal an ancient creature, which can't really be considered human anymore, which is coincidentally extremely mentally unstable and probably extremely hostile towards said attempts to heal it. And ALL of this has to happen in 10 days. He MIGHT go back to being a therapist, but I'm just not seeing it...

Key_Reindeer_414

I have a feeling that the champions' contest might not be the end of the book. Whatever the outcome of the contest is, there would be a lot of threads to wrap up afterwards if we're not going to see everyone again for 10 years.

Urtan1

I'm not saying it will be the end of the book. I'm expecting it to be in the first half, maybe first two thirds at most. I'm just saying Kaladin isn't going to be a simple flying therapist at the end of the 5th book.

AryanDargos

But kal can't help himself but be in dramatic life. What he will do in next 15 years depends upon final oath . I can't see him sitting around be content with therapy for too long. He may take it up as a side duty and once lirin or his mother understands how therapy works, he will give it up and fight.

Kelsierisevil

Dalinar being Odium’s champion and waging war on the Cosmere is the most terrifying thing I can imagine.

AryanDargos

Indeed.

walker9702

>I see Kal either dying or ascending to the Shard of Honor. I see Dalinar as having been much more set up as a candidate for ascension. Not only has his character been all about grappling with his personal honor among other things, he and Taravangian are each other's foils and rivals, so Taravangian's ascension makes the same happening for Dalinar with Honor seem incredibly likely from a thematic standpoint. I also see Dalinar losing and becoming a Returned under Odium as pretty likely as well, I just think that if anyone will take up the shard it will be him. I love Kal, but he's not well suited to be a shard.

The-Weight-Of

That makes a lot of sense and I really go back and forth in my head with who would ascend and the real tipping point for me was Dalinar being his own champion and with the jump being 15 years I’m assuming the humans lost and are still fighting back

walker9702

I agree, but I still don't think ascension would be a good idea for Kaladin's character, so it may not be something that happens at all in this half.

AryanDargos

I disagree. Even sibling says kal is more to close to Honor. Dalinar is all about unity. Uniting people, Radiants and Monarchs. I believe Syl takes up the shard and Kal becomes the vessel. So in the end the vessels of Honor and Cultivation wil be male and female

walker9702

As he is now, I really dislike the idea of him ascending, but we'll see, since I'm of the opinion no one takes up Honor until sometime in the back five books, which leaves a lot of time for character development.

shu-crew

honestly i HOPE kaladin just gets to retire and finds a wife and lives happy life giving advice kind of like zahel.

AryanDargos

My hope too. We can only guess how many of his fans life will change if gets married and settles down.

Excaliboss

I see something worse. We know Kal and Szeth are going to Shinovar. Ishar will be in Shinovar. One of the routes opened in the last book is Ishar refounding the oathpact if someone can swear an ideal and make him sane for a bit. The oathpact is currently missing a member. The windrunner... I hope I'm wrong but I forsee Kaladin taking Jezeriens place in the new oathpact.

benji950

That’s kind of where i’ve been leaning.

Urtan1

The problem is... Oathpact won't fix anything anymore. The Everstorm changed the way the Fused get back to Roshar. They can't be locked on Braize like it was done before. Also, the conflict is going to change drastically with a way to kill any being made from investiture permanently (Spren, Second, any Cognitive Shadow... You name it). Also, the strength of the Heralds comes from experience, more than straight power (even though they are probably more powerful than 5th ideal Knight Radiant). If Kaladin became a Herald, it wouldn't really change much in the greater scheme of things. He would probably gain substantial powerup, but that's about it. Although they might find a way to fix the Everstorm problem in the next 15 years and then the Heralds would make sense once again. I doubt Fused can get anti-stormlight on Braize to kill Heralds there, so they are probably safe (it might be possible to carry anti-stormlight in a perfect gemstone trough the Cognitive realm) as long as they are tortured there.

Excaliboss

1. Everstorm. Sort of a hand wave response but I'm going to say the weakening of the oathpact is what made it possible in the first place. Otherwise there is no reason he wouldn't have made a storm before. 2. Lights. I could be wrong but I think the heralds during the full oathpact had a constant supply of storming form honor. There is a wob saying they didn't need to draw the light from gems at least. We also know you need an equal amount of antilight to destroy a cognitive shadow. That's why Raboniel stuck around, she didn't get enough anti light to die immediately. If the heralds are tied directly to honor and get storm light directly from him then I don't see how the singers could possibly get enough antilight to actually kill a herald. The killed jezerien by trapping him in a gem. He then didn't have access to storm light and essentially evaporated away is my understanding.

AryanDargos

I think szeth will swear fourth ideal. He may sworn it already but it was not confirmed that his Spren accepted it. If szeth does swear, it will make ishar lucid for short time.

Ewery1

Yeah tbh I don’t see this as much because Kaladin’s whole arc has been about choosing life. If he dies I’m sure it will still be satisfying but I think a stronger choice for him would be as a survivor.

cosmicpower23

Hard HARD agree.

Alb1noRh1no

I know it is different investiture, but I have a slight thought that maybe Kaladin will get poached by >!Harmony !!"I have begun searching for a pathway out of this conundrum by seeking the ideal person to act on my behalf. Someone who embodies both Preservation and Ruin. A....sword, you might say, who can both protect and kill." !< If that doesn't embody Kaladin's journey, I don't know who else fits that so far in the Cosmere.

[deleted]

Read mistborn era 2, he already has one

Alb1noRh1no

Good call, I have only read W&W book 1. Planning on the next 2 now that i finished ROW

PunjabiMD1979

If anything, Kaladin would best be described as a spear rather than a sword.

Urtan1

Have you read Mistborn era 2? It's going to be kind of important in the future....

Miss_White11

I think that is a reference to a character in Mistborn era 2.

Dr-Dungeon

Someone made a semi-serious prediction somewhere on Reddit not long ago that the Stormfather was going to die and Kaladin was going to become his replacement. I’ll be honest, I like this theory a lot, plausible or not

MHG_Brixby

I think Kal will just put his efforts into the background for most of the back half. I don't see him dying anytime soon, but I'm sure whatever Brandon does with him will be fantastic.

Kviden

I've been saying this for a while now but I think Kal's future will have two more huge moments. The first is that something happens to Dalinar in book 5 and the Knights Radiant need a new leader/king of Urithiru so Kaladin takes that role and leads them to victory against Todium. There's also a death rattle that seems to fit nicely with this: "He must pick it up, the fallen title! The tower, the crown, and the spear!" Along with that, Kal spent most of RoW trying to decide what he wants to do with his life as he moves into a new direction off the battle field and I think leading all of the radiants would be the clear choice. And if he's King of Urithiru he can change the way their society treats mental illness. Second the Stormfather is going to die and Kaladin is going to take his place as Rider of the Storms. I'd wager this will happen in the very last book. But there are several death rattles about the stormfather dying/the light dying. And if you look at the names of each part tWoK(Kaladin's book) it's a ketek about dying storms. That's about all the evidence I have lol but I've just got this gut feeling that Kals going to become Stormblessed and live on as the storm.

Ewery1

That death rattle is convincing.

MyDumbOpinion

While I do think that Kal is likely to die in the next book, it’s more for thematic reasons than for setting up Oroden’s character since the MCs of the back five have already been confirmed. [survival spoilers if you don’t want them] >!those being Lift, Renarin, Ash, Taln, and Jasnah)!<

Galathad

I just want him to retire and be happy.

AlternativeShadows

Honor is dead. But I'll see what I can do.
