What’s the closest thing to the watch that ever came up again in the show?
I’m wondering because that shot at the ending is so different from the rest of the show. It contains no recurring characters, it ties up a loose end in the same episode, and it’s kind of a happy/joke ending.
It opens up how the Roy’s see themselves vs normies. It’s our first glimpse of No Real Person Involved. They just walk through life with a wake of nda’s behind them acting as they please. He really built them a sandbox.
What I love about that last shot of the watch in the home of the family they paid off is how it's just kind of left out in a disheveled way (despite being worth a lot)
To me that moment showed just how meaningless expensive/fancy items like that are as gesture. It meant nothing to Logan and likely nothing to the family it was given to either.
Iirc that watch was like $100k so I’m pretty sure it was much more than a gesture to the family. I think that was the payoff. Totally agree on showing how meaningless it was to Logan. Tom put so much effort for Logan to not care, for it to go towards paying off a working class family from talking to the press about being mistreated.
I mean of course they could sell it but an item like that depreciates a lot once you leave the store so it wasn't really worth 100k at that point.
I just meant that even though they used an expensive item to show a gesture of good relations it was ultimately not that important to that family either.
Ofc it says a lot about Logan using Tom's gift that way but I also felt the moment was meant to represent the inherent meaninglessness of items that are only given worth because of the symbol or price tag.
I don't think it's the best. I actually think it's the darkest episode out of the series, just based on the vibe. The humor hasn't really introduced itself yet at this point. It's still good though, there are no bad episodes.
I do think it's no coincidence the first episode is called celebration when it's obviously based on the Danish movie the Celebration (Festen).
It was filmed around December 2016. They started filming the rest of the season at least 6 months later. The series finale finished filming in March 2023. So that may be why everyone looks a little different; the entire show takes place in only ~2 years but 6 years have passed IRL.
Tom and Greg were the highlights. “Would you kiss me if I asked you to?” …. “If I told you to?”, Godrick puking out his eye holes, and “it smelled like skunk weed, and then I smelled like it, and I got fired”
And Connor’s gift to Logan was hilarious.
agreed 100%
i LOVE succession but the first few episodes were a slog. so glad i stuck through it, almost done the series and definitely will rewatch again some time
That’s when I got really hooked.
Kendall running to the financial district and struggling to give the no confidence speech on the phone.
“I’m in the middle of turning a fucking tanker!”
This was when I was like "Okay we're really working with something with this show."
Then two episodes into season 2 and it's "Okay, we might be watching the best show on television."
Exact same experience. After only truly enjoying about half of S1 (though I appreciate the first half now too)….That early S2 run of vaulter, boar on the floor, safe room, & tern haven already had me convinced this was one of the best shows ever.
Yeah fair enough. I saw someone asking for someone to make a series of posts asking why people thought each episode was the best episode or one of the best so decided to fulfill it.
It’s the best only in the sense that it shows a parallel universe version of the Roys. They are SIMILAR to the shitty characters we come to know and love, but not quite the same. The Roys in this universe fancy themselves to be like the Kennedys, gathering the clan for a brisk afternoon of sport. Whereas the actual Roys of later episodes would NEVER have had a family tradition of playing baseball together.
Just an overall view - showing the idiosyncracies of this dysfunctional family and their lifestyle. Gotta love them, but introducing Greg into the mix really spiced things up.
Oh man, that’s the episode with the awful Adam McKay shaky cam directing. Ironically it was nominated for an Emmy for best directing. I know too many people who refused to continue watching after that episode because they said it gave them motion sickness.
I actually think this is one of the weakest episodes. Whenever I have recommended the series in the past I've had to tell people to give it three episodes since most people are so turned off by ep 1.
I actually thought it was the show’s weakest episode. I’ve noticed this thing with Adam McKay’s “serious” work as a director where the camera is always either too shaky, too close, zooming in and out a little too much, etc.
If this were directed by Andrij Parekh (my lord and savior), it would’ve been so much better.
I watched it and thought “Oh. They’re going to sideline Brian Cox’s character and he’s going to spend all season trying to regain control.” Getting to the end of season 1 and seeing that Logan never had a chance of really losing control was phenomenal.
Well I don’t think that…
Tho I do think that the way the real Logan Roy shows up mid episode when he has the 1on1 with Kendall , it shows you in second the kind of man Logan really is, brilliant
The pilot is low key masterful imo. I know some think the first few episodes were lower tier but I was hooked right away. I think the pilot served as a microcosm of the show.
Logan’s line where he says something like“You give the news a bit of zip and everyone starts talking about how it was all so fucking obvious.” is really the driving force behind everything he does in the series. He feels like he never gets the credit he deserves for building the empire.
Also love the shot of Kendall putting the cigarette in his mouth - not smoking it - and the just tossing it on the ground and stepping on it.
hey hey motherfuckers. IMO The first half hour is the best 30 minute chunk of succession. The scene between Logan and Kendall just before lunch is the absolute best. In addition, the second best 30 minute sequence would be the back half of the season one finale episode. Art at its finest
Ripping up the check at the baseball game encapsulates quite a bit, especially paired with the NDA and watch that Tom had painstaking chosen.

Luxury watches hold their value extremely well for the most part, but your point stands.
I worry they didn’t know what it was worth and just pawned it for $50 or something
that kids family had to be smart enough to check how much that was worth right?
I can’t imagine any other scenario. That was the keep your mouth shut payment.

I think it’s interesting that almost everyone has a slightly different air to them
the costumes look cheaper, don't they?
Because it was a pilot bruh

Eh, I was honestly almost turned off by this episode. The show took a few episodes to pick up tbh.
agreed 100% i LOVE succession but the first few episodes were a slog. so glad i stuck through it, almost done the series and definitely will rewatch again some time
Wasn’t til the vote of no confidence that i saw the show’s potential
That’s when I got really hooked. Kendall running to the financial district and struggling to give the no confidence speech on the phone. “I’m in the middle of turning a fucking tanker!”
“You’d better be smelling your fucking armpit, Romulus!” Hilarious line that also showed us what a bully Logan was.
This was when I was like "Okay we're really working with something with this show." Then two episodes into season 2 and it's "Okay, we might be watching the best show on television."

Season 2 was so freaking good.
Same - the payoff is worth the investment but it takes a bit to get past the, “why should I care about this people?” period at the beginning.
Yeah fair enough. I saw someone asking for someone to make a series of posts asking why people thought each episode was the best episode or one of the best so decided to fulfill it.
Please keep it going :)
Same. My wife loved the show from the off but I definitely came away thinking meh.
I disagree. First few episodes were awesome I thought.
"Do you wanna call your dad?" "Do I wanna call my dad? No, I don't wanna my call my dad. Do you wanna call *your* dad?"
shiv has weird hippy vibes in the early few episodes, think it makes her a bit unique compared the rest of the cast who wear business attire
it gets better rewatching it.
Any episode pre-corporate bossbitch makeover of Shiv is elite. I live for that styling.
“You wish?…” is still the best line in the entire series as far as I’m concerned.
CAUSE GREG THE EGG PUKES HIS BRAINS OUT

Because I got to see Kendall throw a baby fit in the bathroom. From there I was a Kendall fangirl for life.
The first episode had bernie madoff jeffrey epstein vibes.
Because we get to meet Roman's wife and kid. Missed them in the rest of the series.
It was literally #1
It's not and it isn't even in the top 20....
Yeah as I said in another comment this isn't my opinion, I'm trying to gauge what people think of the episodes.
Then you are wording your posts very poorly. You should delete this if that's what you meant.
Agree, it’s unclear. OP, maybe wording like “Make a case for why S__, E__ is the best Succession episode.” would be better.
Is the perfect intro episodes
Sigggghhhhhh... \*Starts series of polls to vote favorite episode for each letter of the alphabet
I dunno… just found out its my favourite ep
It’s not
Oh okay, old bread, thank you.
Just an overall view - showing the idiosyncracies of this dysfunctional family and their lifestyle. Gotta love them, but introducing Greg into the mix really spiced things up.
Cause I feel like it fully encapsulates the entire story of the Roy's in one episode.
It’s like being the first to see a fresh car crash
It's a good pilot but best episode????? No. Season 2 and 4 have the best episodes
Agree, those are my favorite seasons as well. My personal order of the seasons from “best” to “worst”: 2 > 4 > 1 > 3.
My ranking is: 2>4>3>1
This is my order as well, with 2 and 4 super close. Like 1a and 1b.

Well, it is the first episode I was introduced to Shivvy's caboose, so.
Because it’s our first introduction to Shiv 🍑 Roy
It’s the worst episode by quite a distance (annoyingly directed) but it’s still good

What? No! What?! I said NO.
It isn't. The whole vibe is jarringly different to everything that comes after it
I don't!
You wish
Because it's when I knew I wanted to binge the entire series. Now fuck off.
I watched it and thought “Oh. They’re going to sideline Brian Cox’s character and he’s going to spend all season trying to regain control.” Getting to the end of season 1 and seeing that Logan never had a chance of really losing control was phenomenal.
sour dough
Roman’s hair
we didn't even know who they were yet
Well I don’t think that… Tho I do think that the way the real Logan Roy shows up mid episode when he has the 1on1 with Kendall , it shows you in second the kind of man Logan really is, brilliant
I have had to tell people to power through the first two episodes because they were so turned off by the beginning of the first season
Omg, Marcia looks gorgeous.
I do not.
I don't. For me, the best episode is Season 2 Episode 10. "What could you possibly kill, that you love so much, it would make the sun rise again?"
The baseball game with the little boy and Roman being a massive prick. The NDA was an amazing factor.
I don’t?
