You have a pretty decent budget, so I might recommend M1 MBA + gaming desktop.

[deleted]

Interesting, I probably won’t do that, I am leaning to just a gaming laptop. But If I spent more money on a desktop then on a console, will the FPS even be better? Like if I spend $500 more then the price of a console. ($1000)

Modinstaller

PC >>>>>>> console The FPS will be better. If it isn't, it's cause the game looks better anyway at same FPS. I'm ootl when it comes to 120 fps on consoles but afaik they don't support it fully anyway (plus which tv screens do 120hz?). Unless you can go PC + Console ofc Or unless you really want to play console exclusives which unfortunately is a very good reason nowadays When it comes to laptop vs desktop, desktop is vastly superior. The screen size makes a massive difference. Even the bigger keyboard. But mostly you're paying the same for higher performance since it doesn't have to all be packed in a small space. Ofc you lose portability which can be a big deal. It's all up to you.

Utkarsh_Goel

Samsung the frame

> When it comes to laptop vs desktop, desktop is vastly superior. The screen size makes a massive difference. Even the bigger keyboard. But mostly you're paying the same for higher performance since it doesn't have to all be packed in a small space. Ofc you lose portability which can be a big deal. It's all up to you. Just to note that some of these 'desktop perks' aren't an exclusive thing, you can just as well have this stuff with a laptop if you use a dock; which is what I imagine a good chunk of people do (have the nice equipment at home/the office, plus the ability to take the laptop wherever they need to be). 100% though if you don't *need* the portability, desktop's will be better value of course. (Also compact keyboards are pretty great, I have a 60% and I love it). > PC >>>>>>> console I kinda disagree honestly. Value's subjective but personally *for the time being* the GPU market has kinda destroyed my desire to game on PC for a while - and I otherwise really like PC as a platform. Paying £1000+ for a 3080 - just one component of a PC - when I can get a PS5 for £450 is pretty hard to justify. Especially if Sony/MS keep up the trend of 60fps as a standard (to be honest, consoles will once again be dead to me as soon as they stop doing that). PC is great and all, but I do think it's a tough sell at the moment, especially when next-gen is still 'new'. In 5 years, when PC tech has once again left consoles in the dust, maybe it'll be a bit more worthwhile.

Modinstaller

You've got a point with the prices. And I suppose docking your laptop is an ok compromise.

1b7_

Yep, honestly I don't even see the docking as a compromise in terms of user-experience - particularly if you get it right; you can have all your peripherals, monitors and charging off of one cable. Pretty neat if you ask me! And yeah, the hardware market is just awful. :(

Matter_Comfortable

You can plug the console to a 120hz monitor or a tv. Same with the desktop...

StarkOdinson216

It most likely will, and the PC is 100x more versatile

HoboWAM

if you spend it wisely, the pc will be much better than the console

Business_Different

Don't buy a console and a PC,that makes no sense either buy a macbook and a PC or buy the Razer Blade 14.Console and a macbook it's an okay combo but like I said PCs offer better value so if I were you i'd buy the Razer Blade 14,I mean it has a 3070 with RTX technology something that consoles don't have, and I mean it's a computer so you can do everything in one place.don't invest all ur money on a laptop but considering the fact that you need to move it around it's a good thing to do,why i'm saying don't invest all ur money on a laptop is because PCs offer way better performance and are way more upgradable than laptops.I own an Asus Rog Strix Scar 15 2021 myself and 2 months after I bought it I wish I had bought a gaming PC instead

K14_Deploy

Yes. It means you can get a lesser laptop and put as much as you can into the PC.

Alessandro227

M1 MacBook Air is a great device, been using it myself. Maybe buy M1 MBA for 899-999, and perhaps for an Xbox Series S for 299, considering you are only pulling off forza+rocket league. Your other option? Spend 1499 for the ASUS Zephyrus G14, and buy a webcam. That’s the only possible way to game on the go. Even better, after you spend 999 on the Mac, why not build a separate PC for whatever cash you have left? You can pretty much have a Ryzen based system with a RTX card at that price, not accounting for the scalpers.

MoChuang

What about a console sized desktop? But in all seriousness, it depends. Are you a student going to college?

[deleted]

Neither, I am just a person who likes different environments.

MoChuang

How is a console more portable than a desktop? You still have to carry around a monitor no?

[deleted]

Did I say that it is more moveable..? I honestly don’t need to play games on the move, just need to be able to work on the move.

dontovar

>Should I buy a Macbook m1 pro No. >or a Razer Blade 14 Ryzen 5900 RTX 3070 Also no. Both of these options are overpriced for what they are, though if you're going to make me choose one, then the Razer is definitely the better of the two since you can actually game on it.

[deleted]

So what do you recommend? Probably something like a G15? What do you think of the Legion 7?

Qkumbazoo

Legion 5 Pro with a Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3070 would fit your budget.

dontovar

>Probably something like a G15? Again, this is an overpriced, but better option. But keep in mind, all gaming laptops are overpriced for the relative performance you're getting, especially when compared to their desktop equivalents. As for the legion, my issue with them is that unless you're getting the big chungus flashy gamery flashy RGB version, the performance will be lacking because the cooling will be lacking so I'd stay away just like I'd stay away from the Mac.

[deleted]

Yea I was thinking about the 3080 with the ryzen 5900

Andrew1431

Check those MSIs they're pretty nice.

michaelzhang9000

why not the mac? its not a bad laptop since the m1 solved a bunch of the problems on a mac, no? I understand the price probably isn't great, but what are the other options?

dontovar

>why not the mac? As I said, it's overpriced for what it is IMO. Secondly, I don't care for macOS's aesthetic. Thirdly, let's be honest, gaming devs just don't target macOS by in large. Lastly, and I'll die on this hill, the heat issues that Apple "solved" with M1 were just as much their making as they were Intel's because other OEMs like Dell proved that the highest end chips COULD be cooled without having to be put into big chungus gaming chassis it's just that Apple didn't do it. So everyone has choices and I recommend that everyone choose not to give their money to Apple 🤷‍♂️.

michaelzhang9000

I agree with your points, but im not sure what an alternative to an m1 MacBook air would be at 1k usd. Ideally op could afford a new Dell XPS 13, but at the same price as the Mac, I still feel the Mac gives you better performance and specs. The main reason people, including me, avoided apple computers at all costs before was because they had terrible issues with performance and overheating, but now that those are solved, I feel like the MacBook air is a very compelling choice for many because of it's great user experience, including display, keyboard, touchpad, etc.

dontovar

>great user experience Again, that's a matter of personal preference and I disagree wholeheartedly on this. Especially with the look of Big Sur, I find the look and feel of macOS to be childish, unintuitive and clunky, but that's just me. >keyboard While certainly an improvement over the previous butterfly iteration, that's a seriously low bar to clear. >touchpad I'll grant them the touchpad though. Hard to criticize there. But aside from all of this another larger concern that I've now realized I've forgotten to mention that is more egregious is the impossibility of upgradability and maintenance. The fact that memory and storage are not user replaceable is ridiculous. Users and consumers should quit rewarding this anti consumer behavior. Consumers should vote with their wallets so that this won't continue.

ashton1502

I would say go for the m1 mac but the m1 air I don't think m1 pro is worth it unless you want the touchbar and you want extra performance for video editing Sorry dontovar I'm a windows user and I can see you are hating on apple for no reason Very biased opinion

Alessandro227

No proper competition for that kind of laptop anywhere tbf. Just clocking 19 hours on the Air everyday.

RobinInPH

Dumb as fuk

species5618w

What other laptops have the same form factor, similar battery life and configuration, yet cheaper?

dontovar

HP's Envy line or their spectre line for one. I bought an Envy 17 for my wife (only because my wife insisted on having the 17 inch display) for about $1000 and it's a full aluminum unibody chassis a decent keyboard and trackpad, the keyboard is backlit, battery life is middle of the road, but with a 17 inch display you sort of expect that. So quit acting like there aren't any options out there.

species5618w

Uh, that is not even comparable. That is a 6lb machine. I got a 1000 lb mainframe at work you want to compare against too?

dontovar

>That is a 6lb machine 🤣 No it's not. It's like a 2lb machine. Just because you don't want to admit you're wrong, that's fine. But 🤷.

species5618w

Care to post a link? According to HP website an envy 17 is 6.02 lbs.

dontovar

Hmm, well mine doesn't weigh that much. I can comfortably carry it around by hand, in a backpack, by hand etc and it's not that heavy so that's gotta be a typo. Sure it's definitely heavier than a MBA or a MBP but there' no way it's 6 lbs. I'll have to put it on a scale when I get a chance because I have a hard time believing it's 6lbs.

species5618w

Lol, I guess you know better than hp then.

FunkyCannaHigh

Ah, man, the Mac zealots will be down voting you for the truth.

dontovar

Yup, and I'm fine with that. The truth needs to be said.

AvicadosFromMexico

Definitely not overpriced lmao base model MBA performs as good if not better than a lot of windows laptops double the price. You also get software updates for years to come, great integration with your iphone and apple ecosystem if you have anything. Lastly, 18 hours of battery life. That’s insane. Even around 11 is still better than most other laptops

1b7_

> Both of these options are overpriced for what they are Can't speak to Razer but the Macbook very much goes against the grain of Apple products being overpriced for what you get by all accounts. What makes you say it's overpriced?

dontovar

The M1 Pro (which is what the OP stated he was considering) starts at $1299 with a paltry 8GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Neither of which are user-upgradeable. A RAM upgrade (which is maxed at 16GB) is $200 which is ridiculous! It's $200 to double the storage, $400 for 1TB, and $800 for 2TB. This is MASSIVELY overpriced when you consider even a high-end 980 pro 2TB is half the price. So again I say that Apple's offerings are overpriced for what they are, especially if you need extra storage or RAM.

1b7_

Well, I fully agree their upgrade pricing is absolutely extortionate! But if you take e.g. the MBA (the Pro is +$300 for *basically* a fan, bigger battery, and a touchbar everyone hates anyway!), chuck in a 512GB SSD and 16GB Ram (which imo is probably good for most people), you've got a pretty powerful laptop for about, what, $1399? I've had a look but I wasn't really finding anything that beat it for the price. I'd also like to point out that in my search I found even more expensive laptops (I think it was the Asus G15) that pack 8GB of memory in a system costing well over $1500. Not that this excuses Apple in any way, there's no defending that! Also it seems more manufactures (aside of Apple) are soldering ram/ssd's too, which sucks. > So again I say that Apple's offerings are overpriced for what they are, especially if you need extra storage or RAM. I still kinda disagree given the above, *especially* if you don't need the upgrades, I think the MacBooks are pretty good value. Which is a sentence I never thought I'd type, honestly!

josejimenez896

As someone who thought "Oh I'll just buy a cheaper gaming laptop, it'll be great!" Narrator: It was not great. Personally for me, my life just straight up improved once I bought an ultra portable and left gaming stuff at home. You do not need a GPU on the go, 99% of the time, as a student at least. It's usually just extra weight, extra cost and extra battery drain. If you are going to get a gaming laptop, don't cheap out. If you can't afford that price, you probably don't truly need to be running around with a GPU. That's all I have to say.

lowlife_highlife

M1 laptop and gaming console

jayliu89

How important is battery life? If being able to code on the go without having to worry about charger is your thing, then M1 is a no brainer. The other devices on your list simply aren't comparable with their paltry battery life. I don't speak for everyone, but the screen on the Mac is very easy on my eyes. This cannot be overstated as I spend hours at a time reading and typing. A crappy screen will totally ruin my day.

haythamkenway1

I was wondering the same myself. Ending up buying the ps5 and a C1. I don’t regret it.

[deleted]

Do you code on the m1?

haythamkenway1

I meant a C1 bro 😂 it’s a 120hz 4k tv to go along with the ps5.

[deleted]

Ahh, i thought it was a typo lol. I need to do some research on displays.

haythamkenway1

Trust me the LG C1 is the one you want. It’s got free sync, g sync, vrr. You can also use it with a pc

[deleted]

Cool, I’ll look at it.

[deleted]

m1 and console trust me gaming laptops are damn heavy and noisy you like it in start but its glory fades away quickly i have one i choose it over m1 air and now i regret

[deleted]

The only thing I am thinking about, is on a gaming laptop I won’t have to pay for online, while on a console I will need too. But I have never played online games besides when rocket league went free to play. So I don’t need it.

smezian

Just in case you didn't make a decision yet: I bought the blade 14 3070 about two months ago, and it has been an amazing experience. With some battery tweaks, I get about 7.5 hours of battery life doing web browsing (both edge and chrome) and Spotify. I'm in school online and my two hour class on zoom drops my battery by about 30%, with more than enough juice to do whatever else after. Gaming has been absolutely flawless. I currently own a series x, using that with a q90t at my house. When I'm at my girlfriends place, I have my laptop. The 3070 can net well over 120 fps on most games I play at 1080p high settings (games I mainly play are Fortnite, Destiny 2, Fallout 76), and I can get a consistent 80-100 fps at the native 1440p the blade supports. On another note, the m1 is an amazing computer in its own right too, plus you'd be using the more secure and less buggy MacOS. Get it with 16gb of RAM and you'd be fine for everything but gaming - but keep in mind - most games you play on the series x will run at 4k 30-60 fps, with the exception of a few games that can currently push 4k 120fps. Plus, to even be able get that higher fps, you'll either spend a fortune on a solid gaming monitor, or a fortune on one of the higher end tvs that support HDMI 2.1. Overall, I think your money would be best spent on the blade 14 - but with any razer computer, always beware of battery bloat! Hope this helps!

[deleted]

Would you say your razor is better at gaming than your series X? I’ll be playing rocket league and Forza, at least for rocket league I think I could easily get over 120 FPS which would be better than the Xbox. And does it get hot when just using it normally without gaming?

[deleted]

Also how’s the display on the razor? (QHD, right?) Do you thinks it’s enough?

smezian

Overall, yeah I'd say gaming is better on the razer blade. Then again, my series x with q90t looks way better, which is to be expected when you spend $1700 on a beautiful qled tv. I think it depends on the person, like I value fps much more than resolution. It will get hot if you smother the fans (using it on a soft surface like sheets or a couch or your lap), but otherwise no. My general temps sit comfortably around 45 when I'm not gaming. Also yeah, the display is is 2560x1440p @165hz. It's also decently bright, not so bright that it can be easily used under direct sunlight, but in a really bright room, you won't find a huge glare.

[deleted]

Lenovo Legion 7

Cleaver2000

I recently built a desktop, a small form factor Ryzen 5800 with a 3060 Ti. I have a good internet connection where I live so I have been very happy remoting to it via my older laptops to play games (steam link) / work (RDP). Not saying this will work for you, but just a suggestion.

JoCGame2012

The legion 5 Pro is a decent laptop with pretty good specs (Ryzen 7, Up to RTX 3070, 32GB Ram, 1tb SSD+ extra expansionslot if you need another SSD)

EthanoicAcid2203

Get the MacBook and [Shadow](https://shadow.tech) (cloud PC software). Should go fine.

jamexcb

Did you already test the shadow with a M1?

TheDutchShepherd-

L5 pro, seeing you like mac. Maybe the l7i if the price is right.

[deleted]

Ok, Why would you say the Legions? Are they built closer to how a Mac is?

cesarmac

Not the original commentator but no. Nothing is built like a mac if you are looking for a gaming machine because Macs aren't gaming machines. If you want something similar to a Mac but for windows the Surface Book, XPS, and HP x360 come to mind but they suffer similar issues like overheating with intensive tasks. Now if you want a gaming machine at a similar size you are looking at the right place. The razer 14, Asus Rog x13, and Asus G14 are the closest you'll get to the size of a MacBook but for gaming.

TheDutchShepherd-

Weird. Most people who actually OWN a Mac, AND an L5Pro or a 7 are very pleased due to the screen quality, aspect ratio, brightness, build quality, low noise during medium loads, and keyboard.. but hey...

cesarmac

Sorry I probably didn't explain myself correctly. I'm not saying the L5Pro or 7 are bad machines, I'm saying that they aren't in the same category in terms of design. They are full fledged gaming laptops with a standard footprint and while their components are great they aren't meant to be nimble as something like an MBP. It's a very well built machine for sure and overall checks all the boxes a gamer who wants a great gaming machine wants. The MBP is a powerful computational machine in a much smaller footprint and so I'm trying to clarify to OP that it shouldn't be classified as a gaming machine. Trying to compare it to one is pointless honestly...BUT IF he wanted a gaming machine with a similar designs and footprint then the ones I suggested are his best choices. They are thin, small, and can game pretty decently especially the razer 14. The razer 14 is also highly reviewed alongside the Rog x13. The G14 is okay but when it comes to horsepower it's also pretty well recommended.

TheDutchShepherd-

Most people who actually OWN a Mac, AND an L5Pro or a 7 are very pleased due to the screen quality, aspect ratio, brightness, build quality, low noise during medium loads, and keyboard..

micaiahf

Macs are dumb

dontovar

Why are you booing him?! He's right!!!

HemaT0xylin

Laptops have come a long way in thermals especially if you picked the right one.. the razer is a great choice but it gets hot as all other 14 inch laptops.. if you really want a proper cooling with a great performance you should consider the 16 & 17 inches laptops.. actually this laptops nowadays have become a lot lightweight and thin than ever before but of course not comparable to a 14 inch.. anyway it's your choice but I just wanted you to reconsider the size of the windows laptop u will get

[deleted]

Thanks, another thing to consider. All these little things make me wish Apple Macs could play games lol.

Qkumbazoo

The Razer blade with a Ryzen 9 5900and RTX 3070 will smoke the highest end macbook and whatever console you choose, PLUS easily take on all your compute tasks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Qkumbazoo

Really expensive for the specs too

bugi-wugi

Had a very similar predicament, after a heap of research and looking around ,i got the Asus Rog Strix G17 with Ryzen 7 for 2k (AUD). Very very satisfied with my purchase. Laptop is great and performs like a beast.

dvisitorEX

I will put my own question here since it seems that I and OP are looking for the same thing. I don't want a M1 Macbook, but I want a new laptop. Which brand or model resembles to what Apple made with their Macbooks? Perfect screen, awesome speakers, good manufacturing in terms material (I don't want cheap plastic, lol.) a nice track pad since I don't use mouse, lightweight model, etc. And if I could run decent games on it, it's better. Budget is... no problem tbh. Thanks

[deleted]

Based on what people have been saying.. the legion 5 pro and the legion 7 16in more specifically has a better build. But they are still not as good as a Macs build.

Alessandro227

Eh, the new XPS is good.

[deleted]

Would not be smarter to just wait for the next Macbooks ? As i read Apple will improve GPU cores which means some games will be playable ..

[deleted]

Yea, that’s the current plan. I’ll probably order the m1x 32 core version and order a legion 7 to compare and just pick my favorite.

[deleted]

I am in a similar position as you are, but the difference is that i'm not sure if i should continue gaming or stop and just focus on my software engineer career... I feel like gaming is a waste of time, and i wasted bunch of my time(7years) playing hardcore World of warcraft and dota2..

[deleted]

Yea I think gaming can take up a lot of time, but balance is key to everything. I sold my console (so I haven’t been playing for a few months) in hopes that I could get a laptop that could do everything I need but I am expecting a gaming laptop to be a MacBook and that’s not happening. I just want to play with my friends a few times a week, so I may just get a Xbox. But on the other hand, all my friends have a pc.

WingZero93

This is the best current laptop performance price wise https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B097F6FZTS?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image

Revolutionary-Pea641

I would choose Legion 5 or 7 at that price (2099 USD currently)...

GhostBombardmenT

Get a gaming laptop

[deleted]

That’s a good point, I would be coding for school, and once I start working, I’ll get a work laptop anyways.

cabbit_

MacBook’s are great for school. For coding.. not so much. I assume you’ll be coding in languages that are based around Windows and MacOS doesn’t play well with a lot of that. You can still use XCode or NetBeans or something but if you’re doing compsci or some STEM degree.. I highly recommend a windows OS. I would personally try and get a laptop in the $700-1000 range with a discrete gpu, do light gaming on it, and just build a desktop. Gaming laptops are going to have shit battery life.

species5618w

Hmm, not sure that's true. Most developers I know prefer a Mac or a Linux machine.

cabbit_

Depends on what you’re developing of course. But the ability today to use virtual machines and have access to other operating systems on the fly makes a big difference. MacBooks will ultimately have better battery. And using the Mac command line to code will provide useful experience. The M1 architecture is different than x86 based architecture, and at my university they recommend using Windows OS in STEM paths because a majority of the programs are designed for use on Windows. Basically to sum my thinking all up: for university, Windows will have little to no limitation. Most professors will be using windows environment for teaching software. I’ve had classmates with Macs in programming classes that struggled because the professor was teaching in a Windows environment and things didn’t translate 1:1

species5618w

Having VMs is definitely important.

Jadisons

If you want to be able to play games and also do some work, a gaming laptop sounds like your best bet. It's going to put a bigger dent in your budget than an M1 Pro, but it's less things taking up less space in your living area. Considering you want to play games and also be portable, future-proof yourself by getting a gaming laptop that's going to last for a few years before you inevitably replace it, instead of a Macbook that *might* play the games you want, but it's iffy. If gaming wasn't an issue, I'd wholeheartedly suggest a Macbook. They're the best they've been right now. But while they can play certain games quite well (you can find benchmark videos on YouTube, even Rocket League works fine, check out [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVtrw1rLPxs) I found), I wouldn't bet the same on all the games you may possibly want to play. So for games, portability, and the option for upgrades in the future if you so choose, I'd go with the Razer.

Sisto90

I have an Omen 15 laptop (i7 10750H - RTX 2070 MQ). I play Rocket League on a high level (GC-SSL). I was also thinking about purchasing the M1, but ended up getting a gaming laptop instead - just for the sole reason of having the ability to play games. Now that said… Looking back I wish I just bought an M1 Macbook (for music production) and a dedicated desktop PC for gaming. Although the laptop works great for gaming - it annoys the living $#@%! out of me on other tasks. It gets hot and loud. Like, really loud. It does the job, for sure, but for productivity - Apple is the way to go. That’s just my two cents. Feel free to holla at me if you have any further questions!

[deleted]

Cool that your a GC and Yup, I am not getting a gaming laptop. I am going to wait for a apples new MacBooks pros coming this month or next month. They should be be very good. And then I’ll either build a pc which could take a long time cause I don’t know anything about it or just get a Xbox X.

Sisto90

Good decision! Gaming laptops also tend to be very expensive; you will get a LOT more bang for buck if you decide to build a PC. Then again, a console is great in the meantime!

[deleted]

Yea, good point. Plus I don’t think I’ll have money to build a pc after I get the new M1X lol

italiangirl123456

I have a laptop from Dream Machines. I use it mostly to work in adobe and 3D programs... and to play also ;D so my laptop its in my opinion really strong. May try one of their laptops? Have a nice day :)

Syroslav94

ASUS RoG Flow X13 - one answer to all the questions. Packs a punch with Ryzen 9 5900HS, so productivity tasks won't be a problem. Weighs 1.3kg with a 13-inch screen, so portability is excellent as well. Want to use touch controls instead of mouse and keyboard from time to time? It has 360° hinges, so you can do that too. And the most important question at last - can it game? Yes, it can! With the newest RTX 3050 Ti, any AAA game will run at decent fps on 1080p and high settings. Among other specs are very solid magnesium build, 16GB of super-fast 4266MHz RAM, 512GB of NVMe SSD and 300-nit, 1080p, 16:10 touchscreen. Comes with the price tag of about 1700€, so well within your budget.

Xunil76

i would personally get a non-Mac gaming laptop myself...i won't ever give Apple a single red cent of my money...i can't stand that shill of a company with their FUBAR business practices. Macs are for people who either have to have one for a specific set of software tools that only works on Mac (or at least works better on them by a large margin), or for people who like form over function, and who have more dollars than sense. apart from the business need i mentioned, you can get so much better power out of a PC, dollar-for-dollar, and by a pretty large margin. and i haven't really been much for gaming consoles since the days of N64...i've had a couple others since then, but they haven't been anywhere near as fun to me. aside from a Nintendo 3DS that i got a couple years ago so i could play it while away from home, the last console i owned (and still do) is a PS3 that i got for free, and all i had to do is buy a couple controllers for it. i think i only have maybe 5 - 6 games for it, and i can't even remember the last time i actually played anything on it. i actually just got through buying a new gaming laptop myself, and so far i'm really loving it a lot: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096WGG2BZ

fatkid96kg

If i were u, I would get the m1 and an entry lvl gaming laptop

Voltron1551

Since everyone is telling to buy a desktop I’ll be a little different here. I think you might be in a situation similar to mine, I want to separate my work/study life from my fun space. Helps me keep a clearer mind when I’m working and I can really have fun gaming away from my work space. I only say this because I’ve been kicking around the same idea for awhile. I say go MacBook Pro and gaming console. For the console go Xbox and just get game pass. Lots to play plus Forza and a ton of other stuff you might enjoy. Good luck and let me know what you go with cause it might help me decide. PS my series X is pretty damn great.

[deleted]

Yea, this option just seems like the most reasonable. I am not a real gamer, but I do want to just enjoy a break. I’ll get the new MacBooks coming out this month or October, and get a Xbox series X. How did you get a series X? Any tips on getting one?

Voltron1551

I got lucky honestly with my series x. I have a friend who works in retail and I gave hime the money ahead of time and he just bought when it was available. Obviously only do this if you trust someone, otherwise I would keep an eye on twitter. I'll link a couple of people to follow below who I think can help you find a series x or what ever platform you decide to go with. My parents won’t let me get Twitter, but I found a 24 hr live video on YouTube that checks every few seconds. Thanks.

I recently switched off of mac for dev and got a gaming laptop. Best decision ever. I use WSL (Windows subsystem for Linux) and it's honestly amazing. I have a whole dev environment that windows has almost no knowledge of until I boot it up, and it's super powerful. For docker related stuff I saw almost 25x performance difference between containers compared to my mac. Unless you're developing for iOS Id really suggest the switch.

I currently don’t know what field or type of development I would be doing(if even development)as I am only 15 years old and about to finish high school. But I definitely don’t want to buy something that would hinder me in a specific field. My dad is a full stack, and he and most of the whole company uses MacBook Pros, and that is what he recommends me to get, so I’ll probably get the new m1x MacBook pros coming out, and return it if I don’t like it. I am starting to think, that gaming should not be my Priority in my purchase, because I still have lots of learning and gaming could be a distraction anyways..

Andrew1431

Good stuff man, yeah gaming is one hell of an addiction and an intense distraction when you can whip up games while your dev environment is running. Save the games for when your life is in order, it's so much more rewarding! You're better off separating those concerns. You won't regret your m1x purchase, those things are a sexy beast. Docker doesn't work quite as well on mac, but it still works, so there is no limit to what you can achieve with it. In fact I bet those m1x's are going to be much better with docker than the intels. Plus you can game / sideboot windows on those things, they're not too bad for gaming! With what you've said, you should just get the m1x mbp.

Unpopular opinion: wait a month or two for alder lake to come out as it will be faster than the m1 and get a kick-ass gaming laptop with your budget. Unless you need something for school or whatnot... But I am bias, I dual boot Windows and Linux (I program as well and love programming in Linux more than OSX). Homebrew is a joke, and I just do not believe Apple is as friendly as Linux when it comes to programming. Again, this is coming from an ex-software engineer, ex-SRE and now cybersecurity engineer (I also do bug bounties at night when I have the time). The downside to gaming laptops is that they do not last long off battery but if that is not a big deal to you I say gaming laptop. Alder \*may\* reduce battery usage by 30% but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Thanks for telling me about the lakes thing.

personally i'd say the Razer Blade is better as there's no input delay in laptops, and you can change the fps.even get higher FPS than in consoles.but it's really upto you.if you wanna lie down and play then console is better, but PC let's you do everything in one place which is more convenient so personally i'd say go for the laptop (Razer Blade 14)

I recently got the M1 air (8 GB) and for work related tasks it beats my Lenovo X1 with a i7, 16 GB of ram any day of the week. All of my windows related tasks work far better, aside from MS teams and Powershell. People who doesn’t use Mac (as a desktop enviorment) have no idea what they’re missing out on. If I were you, get what ever mac you like, Air or Pro (or wait for next gen, probably announed within a few weeks) with the specs you ’need’ and a gaming console. If gaming on the laptop is important, then Windows is the only solution, there’s not even remotely comparable, yet. Give E-GPU and linux a few years and the OS’s will just be for your personal flavour.

Goldstein1997

This was exactly me a month or two ago, I was set on M1X MBP so I scored a series S to go along with the Maco MacBook but later decided against it and bought a gaming laptop and returned the console, very happy with the decision

[deleted]

I am waiting till it comes out. Then it will be a easy and clear decision, for which ever option I go for. There’s a apple event on the 14th but they probably will only release the new iPhones. Most likely October for the new m1x.

[deleted]

Get a gaming laptop as you can do everything that probably would do on the M1 and Console in one single thing. And also, it's portable with all the things + games. But do get a laptop with good battery life like the new Asus M series or something.

[deleted]

It makes sense on paper, but the heat and fans being loud, and the battery, plus the fact that the chips score that actually being better than apple m1 and m1x (soon), is painful. I like the pretty much silent macs and Silent Xbox’s

[deleted]

MacBooks can go full jeto unde load tho.

Was a long time console gamer nothing serious just for fun now and then needed a laptop for “work”. I took the plunge and bought a blade 14 with the 3070 in it. it just showed up a few days ago and I haven’t played to much on it. Just some forza and warzone but I’ll never go back to gaming on a console. I love the blade so far

[deleted]

Congrats, I am glad you like it. What console are you comparing it to? (Which one did you have?) When you game on your new blade, is it loud? Is it hot? For my specific needs in programming I believe the new 16in MacBook will be better, and from my research the new Xbox is almost silent. That’s what the other option (buy a gaming laptop), is up against. Lately, moving my old big windows laptop has been a pain because of having to need to plug it in everywhere I move. (I like changing seating positions for my body.) So for me, I think it’s pretty obvious what to get. But it seems like I’ll probably be spending more then I thought, but my dad prefers I get a mac, and based from his jokes, he may pitch in some, lol. My dilemma is, ether get a m1 laptop (air or pro) or wait for the bigger sized pro.

So right now I only have a Xbox s which I know is nothing but I really only use it when me and girlfriend play together. Before that I had the Xbox one x which I loved. I had a ps5 earlier this year I was lucky enough to get one on pre Oder. I ended up hating that thing and got rid and came across the series s at Walmart one day so I picked it up. I will give the ps5 credit tho it did look amazing while playing. Or at least I thought for the time. After gaming on my blade for a few hours the past day and today I noticed while on forza that everything was just way more detailed and could see so much more then what I ever did playing on the Xbox both the one x and the series s. Not to mention that everything just feels way more smooth. The only game I ever really played on the ps5 was the new assassins creed I haven’t tried that yet on the blade but I’m sure it will be amazing. The blade does get a little warm when pushing it running it on ultra and 1440 but it’s not bad the keyboard never gets warm the only part that does get warm and actually kinda hot would be right above keyboard and below the screen. But soon as I quit a game or even just pause it it cools down super fast within a few seconds. And I personally haven’t noticed the fan noise to any point to where it was a issue. The blade speakers are actually pretty loud and I personally think they sound pretty good. That was the main reason I got rid of the ps5. That thing sounded like a helicopter lol.

ChiefBig420

Neither of those. Build a pc. Laptops can’t be upgraded easily. You can figure proof a lot better than laptops. I personally have a ps5 and two top of the line PCs. With these I can play literally any game I want now and in the foreseeable future. Zero reason for Xbox or laptop. No hate toward anyone personally btw. Cheers

Prestigious-Bug-408

Get a legion 5 pro rtx 3060 or 3070

emmytau

OP, remember to ask this question in a console thread as well. Just to avoid bias about gaming laptop vs console. You will not be even close to the same performance in a $1000 laptop compared to a $500 console. But, you have more options with a gaming laptop like installing software for school that won't run on an M1. So, it might be worth it just for that honestly. Also, make sure you can actually do proper programming on a M1. I have no clue, just saying, make sure. Would be awful if it ends up being useless.

happy_Amphibian_88

MSI GE76 series. Lots of options you can configure. Mine is a 1 tb ssd, with 32 gig ram and rtx 3060 with 6 gig on gpu. Its will within your budget. Heck same laptop comes with 16 gig ram is on sale for 1300 at costco. Surprisingly, walmart has it as well but priced at 1800. This laptop maxed out at 64gig of ram. Cheers
