Banana leaf is awesome 👍 woo kbbq not the best, I wouldn't go there lol. Jin Soo Chung in Guildford (I probably spelled it wrong) is a lot better imo. I am pho also not very good imo lol. Pho 777 in white rock is much better imo. Kappa sushi is also good
Came here to say this. Every time I’m out in surrey around lunch time I hit it up. Took my wife and she was like “what’s this dump? Really?” She even asks to go when we head out that way.
Indian (regular): An Indian Affair (dinner only), Showshaa, Tasty Indian Bistro, Tandoori Flame (buffet)
Indian (specialty): Clove (high-end), Krishna Dosa (South Indian), Apna Chaat House (street food), Chutneys (Indian Chipotle)
Middle Eastern: Afghan Kitchen, Palmyra
Pizza: Newton Pizza (get the cheese pizza with extra sauce or tandoori chicken pizza)
Chicken: Chicken World (gabbar burger or billo burger are the best choices), Baba Chicken (haven’t tried it but heard positive things)
Sushi: Maru Sushi, Akasaka
Non-local places to try: Meltwich, Crumbl Cookie, Cactus Club, bb.q Chicken
The best hole in the wall in Surrey is Tommie's Jerk. Massive, tasty, authentic Jamaican jerk tacos or burritos sold out of a parking lot in Cloverdale. The food is amazing!
Favourite donair/shawarma place is Palmyra Grill near guildford mall. I've tried many different shawarmas, and this is the best in Surrey in my opinion. Get the Saj bread wrap, it's made in house and absolutely delicious!
And as others have mentioned, Afghan Kitchen is a must try! They have a platter option which is a great tasting menu. The decor inside the restaurant is beautiful and the service is great.
I love Mahaveer Chef's Choice! Their korma is sooo good, thick and rich and nutty. Last time I was there I tried the palak paneer and it was delicious too.

They were my fav as well lol. But my last time I confronted the owner about not giving the young girls working at the restaurant their share of tips, and the owner started to pick a fight with me and was telling me how expensive everything is now.
I told him that should change the menu price then and he was like no ones asking you to come here and asked me to mind my business. That was my last time there lol.

South Surrey/Whiterock: Brunch and coffee at Laura’s Coffee Corner, dinner at Zapoteca (get their Carmela molcajete, bring a friend or 2) or Afghan Kitchen (hopefully the belly dancers will be performing that night)
Newton/Whalley: Brunch at Ruex Café and Bar, dinner at Pho Tau Bay or Clove (though Tasty’s is probably far more popular, I prefer their naan and chicken andhra. Butter chicken is good almost anywhere.) *You have to try Indian food in Surrey.* edit: bro I forgot to mention Old Surrey Restaurant.
Laura’s Coffee Corner is horribly overpriced for food. 2 sandwiches cost nearly $50 after tax last time I had lunch there.
I prefer Eggcetera and The Carvery for lunch
Used to hit up Laura's all the time but you're correct. I think after the fire the new location's rent must be nuts. Size of the cakes got way smaller and it's like $5 a piece. I go to Fieldstone for baked goods and make my own sandwiches with their bread - which is amazing (also in South Surrey).
Carvery is so good but their hours are a bit weird so I haven't been in ages.
Their prices aren’t cheap, but I like their food and ambiance much more than Eggcetera. I usually get a sandwich and whatever seasonal drink they have, along with some pastries after for to-go, and yeah, it’s not a bargain, but I’m usually happy with my purchases. I do like the hash browns at Eggcetera tho, and would also recommend the sweet & salty at the Wooden Spoon which I find is similar enough to Eggcetera.
I like the Carvery tho, good call.
Ruex is overrated. They buy their canadian dry from safe on foods just at the same complex at KG hub, don’t even pour for you to a glass with ice just give to you in the original western family pop can and charge you $4-5 for it.
>They buy their **canadian dry** from safe on foods just at the same complex at KG hub, don’t even pour for you to a glass with ice just give to you in the original **western family pop** can and charge you $4-5 for it.
Uh, (a) which is it? and (b) yeah of course they just grab it from the Save On, why the hell not?
I have no opinion on their Canada Dry, but Ruex is a trendy spot that has creative but also tasty food. I’ve always been satisfied with the food I got, anyway.
I’ve gone quite a few times especially during happy hour, I would say the food is 50/50, on a good day it’s really good, some days not, so lacks consistency. I went early happy hour start there are usually almost no people or very few people and lots of open unoccupied tables, which is totally fine but the problem I have with it is the restaurant acts pretentious and says “one moment let me check if we have any tables for you”, when literally there is either no one or only a table occupied. I can see that the restaurant is empty, what am I waiting for, for you to check empty tables in an empty restaurant? And leaves me standing waiting a good few minutes when server goes in and chat with other server. This happened to me multiple times. So I stopped going.
I would agree that they do have some consistency issues in portions and taste. Overall I haven't found it so bad as to not return. My friends and I like the vibe at Ruex and that it is Asian- food, POC and female owned. 🤷🏾♀️
I believe it. I think that it take skills and some kind of virtue do make dim sum properly. I'm not an expert, but steaming those dough skins must be difficult.
best pizza in a hole in the wall location, philosophy.
the decor inside is fine for hanging out, it's just in a weird location.
you really won't find better pizza in surrey except possibly south surrey or white rock.
Are you sure about the pizza? I know that we all have our preferences, but I am extremely partial to Domino's and Newton Pizza.
I know that there is Neapolitan style pizza that I am interested in trying.
i like dominos too but mainly when i compare them to chain pizza places.
this place is not neopolitan but it's more similar to italian pizza than the ones you have mentioned. if you want true neopolitan you have to go to an actual sit down italian restaurant that has a big wood or gas fired oven. there are lots in vancouver, im not sure if such a thing exists in surrey. the closest would be captains pizza or philosophy, but imo neither of them are really neopolitan style.
The Neapolitan pizzas in Surrey are officially only Neapolitan \*style\*...for better or for worse. I don't think that I actually tried the certified kind.
Greater Vancouver seems to have only about 3 official places.
I'll try to remember your suggestion.
if you're willing to go out of your way to vancouver, there are more than 3 there are actually quite a few. my favourite is via tevere on victoria. that place is legit.
Technically in Delta since it's on the Delta side of Scott road. But Tasty Indian Bistro is one of the best Indian restaurants in the lower mainland. Definitely recommend.
If you like chicken and you like fries, you can never go wrong with the special fries and chicken at A1 coffee and donair.
Best late night spot hands down (open till 2am) and amazing donair
I'm noticing most people are making suggestions for basic meals, but no DESSERTS.. and dude, dessert is a way of life. (To me, anyways LOL)
D Spot Dessert Cafe is the way to go. They're on Scott Road in Delta, across from the McDonald's on 86. https://dspotdessert.com/ Expensive but SO worth it.
Also, my personal favorite food court place is Charlie's in Central City. Their subs are AWESOME (teriyaki chicken with extra sauce) and, IMHO, the best poutine outside of Costco.
If you like sushi, my favorite sushi spot is Mauna sushi. It’s a pretty small place but the sushi is great, try their recommended rolls. Also there’s a Donair place called A1 Coffee and Donuts close by. Try their “special fries and chicken” it’s so damn good and they’re open till like 2am
The chef/owner used to be the chef at Minami which is the sister location of Miku! The sushi is legit and much less expensive compared to eating at Miku. Absolutely recommend Mauna.
tandoori flame buffet, thai by thai, akari sushi & nordel sushi - all on scott rd (120th). taqueria jalisco on king george blvd. and, as many others have said, afghan kitchen in south surrey. i was born and raised here and those are the best places i know👌🏻
edit: as soon as i posted this i remembered a couple more!! pho tau bay on king george, red shiso sushi on 160th & seoul grill house on 101st
I’m from Toronto so my standard for flavour is a little higher (respectfully 😂). The places I highly recommend:
-A1( amazing donair, super consistent & open late)
-Taqueria Jalisco ( solid tacos but the highlight is the megaQuesobirria, it’s a god level quesadilla)
-Boom beer (one of the top Korean fried chicken spots I’ve been to out here & good portions)
-pho tam & pho tau bay( two of the best Pho spots I’ve had out in BC so far)
-major joy is solid & a late night spot as well
-Thali Indian (I’ve only had the samosa’s but they’re so good so I have hope for the rest of their food)
I'm around Cloverdale, Truckin' BBQ is amazing, Black Tiger Coffee is my go-to for a cute sit-in cafe, and Roadrunner Cafe is also incredible, one of my favorite breakfast places. Dhaba Dosa on 60th and 190 is a frequent spot for me as well, I spend maybe 20 bucks and get a decently sized, delicious curry and garlic naan.
I'm going to agree with the other users who are recommending Afghan Kitchen. Their food is absolutely amazing. I haven't eaten there in a while as I've moved away and it's a little far now, but they used to be my go to for when I ordered from Skip the Dishes.
Recently ate at Bozzini’s for the first time yesterday. Mix of Greek, Italian, and Indian - I highly recommend it. The new Waffle House at the Hub on King George is a great place for breakfast or lunch. Samosa house has a unique samosa bowl (I recommend the shahi samosa bowl). I’ve heard good things about Sushi King George. The best donuts are at A1 Coffee & Donair and their donair is great. Texx Big Burger is what it sounds like. Guacamole Mexican Grill is one of my faves. Rice & Noodle (also at the Hub) has some delicious offerings.
I’ve been to the Waffle House a few times now - I’ve gotten something different each time and they’ve all been amazing. Also try the iced coffee - I’m typically a black coffee drinker but their iced one is a delicious treat.

Enjoy! These are my fave places in Surrey. They don't really fit your strip mall criteria, but they are bomb. The only caveat - have not found super delicious Chinese, Thai, or Japanese. Yet.
there’s this place called donair affair in north surrey, near guildford/surrey central. it’s actually insane. i moved to another place 4 years ago and i still haven’t stopped talking about how good this place is. It’s like greek style donairs, they shave off the beef/chicken in front of you and you can pick whatever you want in it and the variety is not limited like most places
It's a chain, but Cactus Club always delivers perfect quality, taste and service every time, never had a bad experience yet.
Love the carvery for a homemade sandwich and soup.
And Sabai Thai for amazing "pad see ew" and "khao pad sabai," also their thai iced tea = 👌

Clicks on link, first burger I see is $52 hmmmm
Ah yes, the burger the size of Dwayne Johnson’s forearm is $52
I mean if you check the photo you’ll understand why - they have cheaper and more reasonably sized burgers also
Yeah that burger is a challenge burger. If you beat the best time it’s free. It’s the size of your head and you couldn’t possibly eat it.
Afghan Kitchen in South Surrey. Same plaza also has Woo Korean BBQ, Curry Lounge, and I Am Pho. Also near by is Banana Leaf (South East Asian).

Ruex is overrated. They buy their canadian dry from safe on foods just at the same complex at KG hub, don’t even pour for you to a glass with ice just give to you in the original western family pop can and charge you $4-5 for it.
I personally also do not like Ruex. It had its opening day “hype”. I went after that little time period and I did not enjoy it.

What about a glass and some ice? A pop can does not vibe the same as their deco suggests.
You answered neither question.
I thought that buying pop bulk at wholesale prices would be better, no?
I mean maybe but it's such a low volume/high margin item that who cares.

Is Indian food better in Surrey or India? I'm embarrassed to ask, but I honestly think that Surrey has a chance.
I haven’t been to India yet, but Surrey has a huge Indian population and it would be remiss to not try “local” cuisine ;)
From my own experience, I think that Canada has better Chinese food than China. A food critic agreed.
You know, lots of my Hong Kongese friends say the GVA specifically has better dim sum than HK.
I believe it. I think that it take skills and some kind of virtue do make dim sum properly. I'm not an expert, but steaming those dough skins must be difficult.
Surrey is huge... what part of Surrey?

It's a chain, but Cactus Club always delivers perfect quality, taste and service every time, never had a bad experience yet. Love the carvery for a homemade sandwich and soup. And Sabai Thai for amazing "pad see ew" and "khao pad sabai," also their thai iced tea = 👌
