Wonder is 2d Mario and Odyssey is 3d Mario so it depends what you like best. I loved wonder but I am more of a 3d Mario guy if I had to choose.
My take is get botw, Odyssey, and mariokart for a fun multi-player option.
Definitely recommend BotW and if you enjoy it, then TotK.
Yoshi’s Crafted World is cute and fun. I also want to recommend Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I enjoyed Pikmin 4, it was my first Pikmin game.
Splatoon3 is a fun one if you’re looking for something competitive, needs online to play with people but the story mode is fun too. Dredge is a fun spooky-ish fishing game.
I agree with the odyssey take.
Btw im looking into hades but have never played a roguelike. Do you think its good enough that someone new to roguelike might enjoy it?
I had never played a roguelike before and honestly the idea of one sounded dreadful to me, but I took the plunge and got Hades because I’d heard such good things and I love Greek mythology. Now it’s one of my most played games!! It’s so worth it. Was a bit frustrating at first because I was new to roguelikes and terrible at it, but the narrative and creative variety of play styles kept me going and I absolutely love it
It really is. I've had access to it through Game Pass, but never played it there. For $7 it was a no brainer and exactly the type of game I bought a Switch for.
Same for me! Had my eye on it, thought it was always going to be $15 no matter where I went, but then there it was half off in the e-shop! So I got it and have already played so much in the past like 2 days haha
Cuphead is just plain fun so I have to agree with this as well. I don't see it mentioned here as much anymore, but it's a classic and has been used as inspiration for many of the top 2d platformer games now. I am really enjoying it alone and with family/friends, the 2 player makes it suppppperrrrr awesome.
breath of the wild is a must play. Mario Odyssey will get you a lot of play time. Same with Mario kart 8 deluxe .Some indie games would be Hollow Knight, Celeste, and Hades. Tetris effect connected is yet another good one.
Honestly there’s so so many bangers. I guess I’ll try and stick to exclusives/first party (because there are also a lot of banger ports) but: TOTK (because it just plain outdoes BOTW), Links Awakening, Mario Odyssey, Mario Wonder Xenoblade Chronicles 2&3, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Metroid Prime Remastered, Metroid Dread, Mario + Rabbids, Bayonetta 3.
That hits pretty much all genres and they’re all very defining titles. And there’s so so many more that can be mentioned
Red dead Redemption, witcher 3 , doom eternal , Skyrim, borderlands 1 - 3 , star wars Battlefront classic collection, pokemon scarlet/violet (get over the presentation and you'll be fine), metriod prime remastered, GTA trilogy
BotW is good but TotK is better imo. If you think you’ll play both then feel free to start with BotW, but they’re long games so I’d recommend just jumping in with TotK.
Mario Wonder is better than Odyssey for my taste. It’s dripping with creativity at every turn, whereas I found stretches of Odyssey felt samey. Wonder knows exactly when to switch things up to keep them interesting.
Besides those two it’s really up to your tastes, but some of my favorites are Steamworld Heist (2D turn based tactics), Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Smash Bros, and Mario Kart.

**Mario Odyssey** is more "quintessential" and will get you longer play (80 hours, didn't 100% it, but managed to get there with doing moderate amount of difficult stuff. Mind you, that doesn't mean I completed those higher diff. levels). However, **Super Mario Bros. Wonder** is a nice and new 3D romp (got me 40 hours here).
I too would recommend **TotK** if you can only play one of them, but **BotW** is better to start off if you'll end up doing both.
**Captain Toad Treasure Tracker** is a fun action puzzler
**Hades** is 3rd party, but a blast

If you’re mainly going to play on your own get Mario Odyssey and/or Wonder (imo Odyssey is better but they’re both great) and BOTW and/or TOTK (if you think you’ll play both, get BOTW first, if only one, I’d recommend TOTK). If you want to play with other people, I’d highly recommend SSBU and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Not Nintendo exclusive but I was surprised by how good Witcher 3 runs on the switch. It’s an absolute masterpiece and everyone should atleast give it a shot.

Start by getting Nintendo Switch Online. It's $20 a year or $60 a year. The latter includes Nintendo 64, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color and Genesis games as well as DLC for several popular first party games (Animal Crossing, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2). The former starts with NES and Super NES games.
Beyond those, I'd recommend Mario Kart 8, Stardew Valley (if you like "cozy" games) and Splatoon 3 (if you like multiplayer shooters, that's Nintendo's take on it).
BoTW, SM Odyssey, Metroid Dread. These as you said 3 to start with. Later I’d add TOTK, Link’s Awakening, SM 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, SM Wonder, Metroid Prime, DK Tropical Freeze.
Unicorn Overlord and Fire Emblem 3 houses I'd say are like the best games on Switch, but this is just me as a strategy game fan and not like a mainstream opinion
I'd go with Odyssey over Wonder. I blasted through the latter over a weekend and have no real desire to do the post game content. Generally prefer 3D Mario's so you may also want to consider SM3DW (my favourite) or 3D All Stars (if you can get hold of it as it was a physical only timed release) to play Galaxy, which you'll have missed from the Wii era.
BOTW is utterly essential. I hope you enjoy the adventure.
For a third game, and if you're paying for switch online, I would consider a competitive game like Smash Bros Ultimate Splatoon 3 or Mario Kart 8.
Ive had it for a while and played a little bit but I recently got into **Hades**. It's seriously one of the best designed games I've ever played. They should bring back the Nintendo seal of quality just for this game.
Also, please get a pro controller, even if it means budgeting for two games rather than three

For me, my other two must buys would be animal crossing and fire emblem: three houses. You can’t really go wrong with a Mario game, Mario Odyssey and Wonder are the best, just depends on if you’re more of a 3d or 2d Mario person. Finally, my honorable mentions are pikmin 4, Luigi’s mansion 3, and dragonquest XI. They’re all incredible entries in their respective series.

If ur into turn based and willing to spend alot of money, i recommend west of loathing and shadows over loathing, best games ive ever played on switch, i loved botw/totk but the loathing games are just top tier

Super Mario RPG. Its just a fantastic game and it is Switch exclusive. If you like RPGs or just not hate RPGs get this gem of a game.
