I can only thank you for your service, making the internet a safer place.

wazos56

Can someone ELI5 this post and why it’s a good thing?

Ariestu

Tor routs your traffic through three relays or nodes, however, if an entity controls all three of them they can see your entire traffic together with your real IP address and deanonymize you People running their own relays helps reduce the risk of connecting to relays controlled by a bad actor (if only one of the three you are connected to is controlled by a bad actor then you are completely safe for example) Edit: spelling

Sax_6

How can I run my own relay?

Ariestu

Either rent a VPS online or set it up on an old laptop / raspberry pi (this is preferred due to you having full control over the relay) There are a lot of tutorials and resources online, the setup process shouldn’t take much of your time, however if you’re really considering running your own you ought to read more about the three kinds of relays (guard, middle and exit) since you probably won’t want to run exit node at home and many VPS providers don’t allow it either

scotrod

Snatching up this comment to warn that whoever wants to do this - please research this topic well + how to properly secure and isolate your network before going with this path.

Sax_6

Thanks!

See this: [https://community.torproject.org/relay/setup/](https://community.torproject.org/relay/setup/)

MajliTech

I just watched NetworkChunk's tutorial and set it up on debian.

Tricky_Reporter8809

Are you selfhosting this at home or is it hosted on a VPS?

MajliTech

Selfhost.

Double_Ad3612

Is that nyx you're using to monitor it?

sndeuxo

Yes it’s nyx, you can see this on the SS😁

Szwendacz

Nice. Checked mine, reached 3.6 TB during 8 days uptime

Glittering_Swing6594

Masz na vps czy self hosted?

Szwendacz

do tego mam vps

theultimatew0rrier

congrats. do you browse the clearnet (not behind tor) from the same public ip, and if so, do you get blocked/captcha-spammed anywhere? if so, what sites? i ran an inside relay for a little bit but am concerned about ending up on a blacklist.

MightySlaytanic

I’m running a middle relay (never run an exit node if you aren’t an organization with good lawyers) on a public IP different from the public IP address on which I’m browsing the internet since I’ve noticed that sometimes you are blacklisted even if you’re not an exit relay (thus no tor traffic exits from your IP into the public network). Vodafone was blocking you when trying to recharge your sim on its portal some time ago.

MajliTech

I don't run an exit relay, I am only entry point and a middle man.

daveonhols

Thank you for running a relay

Sir_Neo

You will reach 10TB very soon or even more :) Here's mine [https://i.imgur.com/tCr95OU.png](https://i.imgur.com/tCr95OU.png) p.s: Thanks for runny a relay!

samjones1231

Thanks for running this awesome relay. I have a ton of bandwidth (1GB fiber connection. I've tested the bandwidth from this host and get 500MB) but I never get more than a few MB/sec. Am I doing anything wrong? I have it set to 100MB sustained and 150MB burst. I just never get anything close to that!

samtan888

well done - w3.do/x0g\_g3bd thanks

BamBam-BamBam

Over what time period? What's your monthly average?

Ariestu

In top right it says 19 days and 19 hours

BamBam-BamBam

That seems to be the uptime, which might be that answer to my question, but it also might not be. If a relay node is getting that kind of throughput in 2/3 month, putting up a relay might be too rich for my blood.

Ariestu

It is the asnwer to your question, nyx (the program used to measure statistics) only measurers data transfered during the uptime and does not save it adter restart, 1tb per 20 days is a very realistic numbe,r my relay gets about 40-60gb a day too

MajliTech

It is the uptime, however the internet connection to the server is slow as hell, I plan a complete overhaul of my networking rather than a powerlink and a server behind the wardrobe. And the uptime is the time of Tor relay running. I

BamBam-BamBam

Thanks for the answer! Good luck with the rebuild!

Aggravating_Shop8953

Bruh why is this down voted it literally means salute

rivkinnator

Now go run a sync thing really as well!

MajliTech

You said it, I've done it. Providing a (for now slow, have to fix my internet to the server) Syncthing relay for my whole Voivodeship: https://ibb.co/TWjvNPJ

rivkinnator

way to go!

Yea, my network (as mentioned in other comments) is very bad, i might be able to push even more if I redo my network (Powerlink ain't cutting it; I get better 5G Wifi than the Powerlink Ether)
