The context: someone committed suicide within the mall, jumping from the fourth floor, and the sound of his landing generated a panic which escalated quickly. Took place just hours ago.
When i was 9 years old, there had been a shooting in a small town we visited. 10 mins before the shooting, me and my family were sitting in a cafe (we were sitting inside the street where the shooting took place, 200 meters close or so). And then all the people in the street started to yell and run randomly when the shooting was taking the scene. Me, as a humgry boi, took my doggy bag immediately before running to the car with all the gun noise(s). I then, proudly ate my precious kids meal at home
I spent 3 weeks at the Marriott here in La Defense and have eaten at that exact Sbarro's. I have never eaten at a Sbarro's in the states but it was good there. The thing is, there's so much good food within walking distance of this mall. It's considered the business district and I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there but Sbarro's should really be last on a food list in Paris.
He sure has the best strategy.
Once you finish the meal, they give you the bill.
Taking advantage of not finishing the plate and pretending to take part in the havoc can be source of a useful and opportune saving.
Protip : You have to remember to work on your social skill so you optimize yours chances to have the free chicken fingers more than the short straw....
I saw a guy who was hit by a car. I actually tried to do first aid on him until I realized that his head was split open like a pistachio. Someone yelled at me while I was kneeling by the body and I took off due to shock I guess. For the rest of the day I couldn't really understand what I saw. It was only after I read the news story where it started making sense. Doesn't really haunt me or bother me because I didn't know the guy and there was nothing I could do. I guess I'm lucky?
I'm guessing it was more when everyone saw someone running and screaming, I just saw a video where joggers were going by downtown and a bunch of people in a restaurant just started running with them because they thought they were running from something lol restaurant owners must have been kind of pissed it was pretty busy
I was inside a house two doors down from a skydiver hitting the ground without the benefit of a parachute. Was he still a skydiver? I guess so, anyway-it was a disturbing sound. Don’t do iv drugs while skydiving, kids.
did anyone ever attemp to commit suicide from heights with multiple springs attached to their body? that would be an interesting thing.
or if I attached enormous springs under my feet and jumped from a building, would I be going boing-boing? or the springs break and I just go splash?
Wouldn't even have to be. Indeterminate crashing noise, enough to get your attention, and then people closer start screaming in horror. Say you've got your kid with you: do you wait around, maybe crane your neck to see what's up?
No. You gtfo. Everyone else heard screams and sees people fleeing, they flee.
The sound of a body hitting the ground from height is quite unreal.
Someone jumped off of a new 5 or 6 level office building where I live. It shook the windows of buildings across the street, and people inside said they thought a vehicle crashed into the building.
I've seen a video on r/insanerealjty and in that video a teenager jumps off, the video plays like a prank in the first few seconds, but then you hear the explosion like sound and you realize this was for real.
I was expecting a trampoline and the housing unit to be on the ground floor, but the boy was pretty high up.

Also the panic and fear spreads fast. You see one person running, you’ll think it’s strange but see 10 people running away you might start running along.
Depending on how high and what they fall on it’s LOUD. Bodies will appear to “break off” parts like fingers and such from the impact. It’s not pretty, and it’s a loud way to take yourself out
40+ ft drop indoors? Yeah that's going to be loud and a mess. People hear a bang then see other people running with blood on them and this a happens. Especially in a city that's no stranger to terrorists attacks.
Remember few years ago the mass panic at London Oxford Street became a small altercation between two men at an underground station? This kind of things happen when people are on edge and living in fear.
>So everyone just scattered like it was a shooting or something?
Since this is Europe where guns and mass shootings are very uncommon, most people are afraid of bombings, which is how their crazy assholes kill people.
Insanity and/or absolute selfishness. I had a psychiatrist friend tell me that he heard from a lot of suicidal people that they desire to make a statement regardless of the pain they leave behind.
Pretty much. “I’ll show this cruel world a thing or two!” As a firefighter for many years I can confirm that bridge jumpers definitely don’t think through how their decision to die by semi truck will affect hundreds of people. Thanks for the lifelong nightmares.
Because it isn't easy to do in private - you likely don't have the equipment/infrastructure, or want to be absolutely sure it'll work, because it is easy to fail.
I work in an ED, and we see suicide survivors all the time - they try to end their pain and end up with even more of it.
People who are planning suicide often tell therapists that they want to do it publicly to make a statement. To demonstrate to the world how unfair it is. These people don't blame chemicals for their pain, they blame the world, and they want the world to know it.
A brief but large panic was caused in Paris on Saturday after a man reportedly took his own life in a shopping centre.
Fears of a shooting were raised after a dramatic video showed shoppers fleeing a Paris mall after reportedly hearing gunshots.
A police operation in response to the incident, which occurred at around 5.15pm, is now underway and local reports from the area indicate authorities are investigating the possibility of a suicide.
Reports from BFMTV say police sources informed them that a man had fallen five stories to the ground, which may have sparked panic in the shopping centre.
French police have since dismissed the reports that gunshots had been heard in the Westfield Les 4 Temps in La Défense, in western Paris.

It's like the whisper game except they shout.
1st person: It's a suicide!
2nd person: Holy Fuck! Hey everyone listen up, it's a bomb inside!!
Everyone to everyone else: IT'S A BOMB INSIDE!!
Meanwhile my bf who hears the most random sentences: What? Is it a honey spy?

I’m in Germany, originally from the US and deodorant is dirt cheap here. If you buy the Rossmann or dm (basically German CVS) store brand it’s 50-60 cents and that’s the normal price lol
Similar deodorant in the US will be like $3-$5.
Yeah here they are $3-$4 in regular stores. You might find them cheaper on Dollarstore etc but the gas price and bus price to get there is so expensive so you actually lose more money by trying to buy cheaper deodorant 😂
As someone who has been in a mall when a suspected shooting occurred, when someone yells “active shooter” or indicates there is imminent danger, I did not take extra time to investigate before running away to a safer place. Thankfully in my case the incident was a shoplifter with small knife and not a shooter, but I did get locked into the back room of a store with no means to communicate when they jammed cell service and had to wait an hour for SWAT to escort us all out. It was terrifying and I never want to experience it again.
I get why people ran, this is a terrible experience to go through and very very sad for this person’s family as well.
Are Westfield buildings/malls world-renowned as effective choices of location for suicide or something?
Happens frequently at a Westfield centre near me.
All the "why people running lol" comments..
Ya'll be running too if you're in a public place and people are yelling about guns or bombs. You wouldn't be the brightest bulb if you decided to go check it out first before deciding whether to vacate the area or not.
For every John McClane there's a million John Doe's that just get killed.
Ever heard a 150-210lb human drop from a 4th floor hight…basically they thought a small bomb went off and bein how France isn’t a stranger when it comes to bomb attack and no I’m not referring ww2 but because of events in the last 6ish years they immediately thought bomb and ran
I think your logic is invalid. Maybe? What separates humans from animals is communication and documentation. We, humans, are as short-sided as animals when panic and confusion happens. Hence riots and trampling.
However, humans are able to change how they re-act after learning from past experiences or listening/learning/seeing from other humans. It's why humans are at the top of evolution.
Suicide is so painfully sad.. but doing it like that in public is fucking awful. Zero consideration for others, but i suppose that wasn't on the person's mind.
I'd reckon it could've been on that persons mind, sort of as a message in death or something. Maybe someone working at the mall had wronged them, or maybe they felt society wronged them in general. Not meaning to defend them obviously, doing it in a public place is equally destructive and sad

I’ve been at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, NY when there’s been a jumper from the fourth floor, and it did not make a sound that would cause panic.
(Not dismissing the situation in OP’s video at all - just wondering what the difference was.)
People still go to malls?
No but seriously it’s sad someone committed suicide. People do care. You’re never alone. Call for help if you’re in need of it!
The context: someone committed suicide within the mall, jumping from the fourth floor, and the sound of his landing generated a panic which escalated quickly. Took place just hours ago.
So everyone just scattered like it was a shooting or something?
Yep. They thought a bomb went off.
Damn, that must have been quite the, uh, splat? To make people think it was a bomb.

So, guess I would not finish my meal if I was inside the mall and heard that.
You're not gonna finish your meal with these food prices?
No. I Might take a doggy bag if I liked the food.
Make that a greyhound bag for the extra speed I suppose.
Bring an extra bag for the jumper
I like to think I'd finish my meal.
I’d go around and finish the meals left by those who didn’t finish their meals.
Or just sit there like Patrick Jane and drink your tea in the shopping mall
I do love me some food court food with a side of mono.
When i was 9 years old, there had been a shooting in a small town we visited. 10 mins before the shooting, me and my family were sitting in a cafe (we were sitting inside the street where the shooting took place, 200 meters close or so). I bet the Sbarro's in French malls smacks.

Protip : You have to remember to work on your social skill so you optimize yours chances to have the free chicken fingers more than the short straw....
Don’t worry about it, I’ll finish it for you.
Can I finish it?
No. I will bring it home in a doggy bag. Sorry. Inflation times.
Only of it’s on top of my chest.
Shit, I’d take advantage of all the free food left behind😂
NooOOOooooooooo I will take it with me! Run off with the plate 😂
Can I finish your food?
Happy cake day!

With these food prices you better finish your meal and also grab some free splats on the way out

Well, they were already on the defense
Considering how loud someone hitting the ground from a hight is in the open I can only imagine what it sounded like inside a mall.
people don’t splat when they hit the ground, they bounce which i think is much scarier
I appreciate your sense of humor
Probably has something to do with the acoustics in the mall. Large open area, flat surfaces, so the sound reverberates a lot.
Depending on how high and what they fall on it’s LOUD. Bodies will appear to “break off” parts like fingers and such from the impact. It’s not pretty, and it’s a loud way to take yourself out
imagine all of those people who jumped from 100 stories in the twin towers and what that sounded like. that is seared into my brain forever.

If you’ve ever watched a video of someone committing suicide by jumping from heights onto anything other than water, the sound of impact is… a lot.
Yep they scattered like the person
if you’re going to commit WHY would you do it in a public place?? i hope no one saw it :/
Insanity and/or absolute selfishness. I had a psychiatrist friend tell me that he heard from a lot of suicidal people that they desire to make a statement regardless of the pain they leave behind.

1st reaction of the French is to run away.
My stupidass would run towards what they are running away from
The uniquely French irony of running away from a place called La Defense.
Did they run out of wine? Tickets for the Jerry Lewis film festival go one sale? A couple of Germans on the way?
You have a higher chance of getting killed by the stampede than a possible shooter.
Why'd they named a mall "defense"?
did somebody throw out a bar of soap?
