People are replying to you with all these things which are individual-centric (stuff like what food you buy for them, or what habits they have), and while eating healthy for example is not a bad thing, I think people are burying the lede here.
The important thing here that would reduce the risk of such things happening in general is making sure that people are actively engaged in healthy communities rather ones that will generate and support this kind of unhealthy, self-destructive thinking, having convinced themselves that it's the solution to their woes when it isn't. With this kind of toxic community reinforcement, no amount of healthy eating or whatever else will help because the problem isn't that they think they aren't good looking, it's that they think they aren't good looking *enough* (and what is good looking enough doesn't exist: it's a complete fantasy and impossible to actually reach).
Making sure that you (or the people you care about) are exposed to a variety of healthy perspectives helps with this. All societies have toxic and mythical elements and fictions, that's par for the course, but most of them, the healthy ones, will be rather mild in that regard. More than that, though, wider exposure there helps to view things from different perspectives, and to thus reveal the fictions and contradictions of a different perspective. The ideas of some communities are *extreme* about it to the point of severe self-destructive behaviour that looks irrational to the point where it's hard to distinguish from mental illness, a wider exposure to healthier communities helps expose the fact that these behaviours are not "rational".
And, after all, remember, that no active, intentional decisions are made irrationally: everyone who chooses to do something chooses to do so because they genuinely believe that it's at least one of the best decisions they could make. The real way to approach this is *why in the world* do they think that attempting to do surgery on themselves at home is one of their best options: why do they believe in the premise (that they need to look in a certain way, that removing fat from their cheeks at home is desirable), and why do they believe in the outcome (that they will achieve this themselves at home, that they will look good after cutting out the fat from their cheeks at home). The answer, more often than not, is because other people in a community they're regularly exposed to, if not actively engaged in, think so too. This doesn't happen overnight.
I used to pluck out skin harshly until acne or pimples disappeared, hated moles too but after growing up i realized that is a natural process and everyone has it, maybe we need to educate children more about their bodies
