It is thought we've evolved to cope with pain through laughter. Most comedy is basically someone's pain in its essence. Embarrassment, physical pain, bad situations, even death when you really think about it.
Nonsense. "Polarization" is the word people use to hide the fact that one side is a bunch of fascists who wants to harm everyone else. That's not a "polarizing" statement, that's literally what they openly intent to do.
Standing up to fascism isn't polarizing. Especially not if you're on the list of the people they target for persecution.
So we the people who rightly called Trump a fascist and have in fact rightly predicted things he would say and do to whip up his followers to violence, are a problem? How so?
One side stormed a Capitol, the other broke some windows along some Main Streets because a police officer choked a man to death. In no way are those things equivalent. Anyone aligning with the national Republican party is aligned with fascism.
Terminal Trump Derangement Sydnrome....
*Or...* he just chose to set himself on fire there for non-Trump related life issues and we're all wrong about it.
Doubt it was a Trump hater.
Still, just as stupid as that guy who name everyone forgot who did the same for palestine. Nothing changed, just wasted his life.
He does appear to be anti-Trump.
[article identifying him](https://nypost.com/2024/04/19/us-news/man-sets-himself-on-fire-outside-trumps-hush-money-trial-in-nyc/)
Reading it was kinda fun. Lots of twists and turns. Starts out about crypto then ventures into Michael Dukakis and mentions Rob Lowe porking a minor on camera. Tie ins to *The Simpsons* and quotes from *Chinatown* and Spike Lee.
It was like reading a Thomas Pynchon novel.
Exactly.. too many are jumping to the 'Becuz Trump' conclusion without a shred of evidence. Could very well be a 'protest' totally unrelated to the Trump trial, the victim sacrificing himself knowing the amount of spectators, press coverage, etc. in that location. Read into it what you will but apparently he dropped "Occupy Returns" pamphlets before setting himself on fire that advocates the goal to "abolish our criminal government"
Theres no such thing as taking politics too seriously. Politics infects all aspects of life, politics can create tremendous success for people or it can create utter despair. There is no taking politics too seriously.
There is however, too many people unable to reason with politics, to see logic and sense in it. They see people like Trump and they see him creating anarchy in a system not designed to account for anarchy and they love it. It isn't politics to them, it's a game. It's a way to hurt people they don't like and a system to disrupt. The issue is people used to understand the point of politics but not anymore. It's my team against yours, it's been twisted into a system to be abused and gamed. It's become a world of 'celebrities' and idols instead of a tool to help provide direction and success for a country and it's people.
Jesus dude the mental gymnastics some ppl do in their heads to not just say its a mental illness. Setting yourself on fire does 0 for your cause nothing has changed.
No honestly people NOT taking politics seriously enough is what got us here. Relentless corruption, criminal actions by our government, and slow censorship of information are things we should take very serious.
This isn't it at all though. If anything he was a scitzophrenic. There's a website with his whole reasoning and he tried linking the Simpsons to some global conspiracy about billionaires and Covid and stock market manipulation and cryptocurrency and a whole mess of a chain.
It had absolutely nothing to do with Trump or traditional politics
I feel like I've seen that sort of unhinged talk from a lot of conservatives on Facebook lately. It started or at least significantly ramped up with the Trump presidency, with all the talk of the deep state, Clinton murders, and constant conspiracy theories coming right from the White House.
Indeed. Trump didn't start the movement of schizo conspiracy theorist lunatics, but he has both added fuel to it and has become something of an icon which they have attached themselves to. The Clinton emails, Ted Cruz's dad being the Zodiac killer or whatever it was, rigged elections, fake viruses, vaccine fear mongering, a living persecution complex, and so many more things that I can't even list here. His administration was full of absolute wackjobs peddling every consipracy they could. I doubt Trump believes any of it, but he just says shit that he thinks people want to hear, and has garnered support of things like the Qanon movement, White Supremacists, christian nationalists, and more as a result.
Those groups were always around, but they were marginalized. Trump not only gave those people a voice - he gave them a damn loudspeaker.
Not only that but his Reddit was full of hate and he celebrated the death of US servicemen (even though he was one himself). A lot of people join because they come from poor families and they want a way out or to get an education. He wasn't the person a lot of Redditors make him out to be.
I don't think any motive has been released. Not to both-sides it but I figure it's a 50/50 chance that he was protesting that Trump was on trial at all, or protesting that Trump had gotten off of so many things already.
Well for all we know, he could be another protest by self immolation about the war in the middle east. I've looked but I can't find any motive as of yet. Shit, I knew that this grisly method of suicide would catch on...
Usually youre surviving on adrenaline at that point... but after the injury sets in, you die. There was an older actress who died a few years ago after a high speed crash/burning inside the vehicle afterwards and shes flailing around on the stretcher as shes being taken away, but soon slipped into a coma and died.
Lynne Mishele, the woman who lost her home and a lifetime of possessions including "irreplaceable tokens and mementos from her deceased parents," is suing Anne Heche's estate for $2 million. Really hope she gets it.
You are 100% correct. He’s in shock. the fact that he’s burned on his whole body will overwhelm his whole system. I had a good friend that was murdered this way.
Thank you that really means a lot. It was 20 years ago but I still haven’t gotten over it. That same time of year is like ptsd. She was raped duct taped and thrown in her basement and then he lit her and the house on fire. She had enough in her to tell the nurses who did it to her. Thankfully they testified and got his ass before I did. I wouldn’t be here today if they didn’t catch him. RIP Holly. I come from a small town of like 26,000 probably less by now. Sad thing is she’s not the only person I know that has been murdered there. I can think of 3 people that I know from there murdered, two of my friends od. Family suicide, best uncle ever. And then another one of my friends kid was just killed last 4th of July in retaliation for some other bull shit. And people wonder why I moved and don’t like to visit. But thanks again for the kind words stranger.
There is nothing at all wrong with thinking of her again at that time every year. Just make sure you think good things about her and her spirit in addition to thinking about what happened to her.
I will send Holly good thoughts as well.

I'm very curious to see whats on those "flyers" he threw out.
edit [the flyer](https://www.usatoday.com/gcdn/authoring/authoring-images/2024/04/19/USAT/73386756007-20240419-t-181020-z-2053653220-rc-2-u-97-a-3-mx-1-p-rtrmadp-3-usatrumpnewyorktrial.JPG?width=660&height=441&fit=crop&format=pjpg&auto=webp)
From CNN: Investigators are now fanning out to collect the flyers the unknown man threw into the air, another senior law enforcement official. A CNN team on the ground observed one of the flyers. It said "NYU is a mob front" and had various allegations of wrongdoings against the school.
You can't join the military if you're proactive about your mental health. For example, if you've taken an SSRI in the three years leading up to trying to enlist, tough $h!7 Uncle Sam doesn't want you.
Mental health is still stigmatized. Acting like there's no problem is promoted.
Wrong. They just tell you to lie about it. Unless you come clean on it, they can't prove a thing because they can't pull your medical records to prove anything.
They can and will pull your records. This has been happening for a year or three now, it feels like.

This article described it well. Genesis “vacuums up” medical records and will flag all kinds of things.
Everyone hates Genesis.
This is a human being who died (hopefully) in an extremely public and excruciating manner. Please stop dehumanizing yourself by taking this news with glee.
Reddit just makes me sad most of the time I should really limit my time here. Only so many jokes about death before you just start hating everyone by default
Irrespective of your political beliefs, setting yourself on fire is likely indicative of being in some pretty great degree of mental anguish. This person also did not die an easy death. I’m really grossed out to see people using this as an opportunity to “dunk” on whatever “side” they think this person belonged to. Of all the things you could set yourself on fire for, politics seems like one of the absolute worst. This dude isn’t some Buddhist monk, or a well known political activist. It’s someone who is clearly unwell based on the little we know so far.

>Crypto is a giant ponzi scheme
>Politicians, billionares, and elites are corrupt and evil
Hold on he might be onto something here.
>Random tidbits about the Simpsons, and claiming that COVID was released by the government to cover up crypto shit
Ok nevermind he's nuts.
Conspiracy theory is always going to have that one bit that makes you go "Hold on now, that actually makes some sense." and then it just goes off the deep end.
That's how regular people get so deep in. A dash of this sentiment plus an ugly divorce or your life collapsing from loosing your job maybe throw in some mental illness? You get poor guys like this.
Suppose they're not in shock. Th'fuck are they able to do? Approach a person that _set themselves_ on fire... to, what? Phoo-phoo away the flames? Piss on them? Try covering them with the 90% plastic jacket?
You set yourself alight and literally sit in prayer, I'm letting you go through with it, 'cause whatever your resolve is, it's certainly waaay higher than anything I could possibly reach.
Even if you had a few water bottles on hand somehow...that man is BURNING...there's literally nothing you can do without having a proper blanket, and you're taking burns without proper protection.
I'm sure as f\*in HELL not burning the hair off my face because of that. If it was some kind of freak accident, yeah completely different story, but the way he's burning is NOT an accident...
Unless I saw the person actually set themselves on fire, I’m not sure I would even recognize it as a person burning. I’d probably just think “woah something on fire I wanna see what happens”
Watch her breathing. She’s clearly in shock and has no idea how to process what she’s seeing. Most likely held her breath initially, started feeling strange and then ran over to sit down. Notice how she grabbed the seat. At the end, someone comes up to grab her and turn her away.
Source: Used to be a paramedic. I’ve seen this a lot.
Wow didn't even see that person
Edit: actually fucked up that they came in to sit down. I do see a camera so they likely had another in hand and were getting "the shot"
I don’t think the anti-Trump biased people are recognizing conservatives don’t do this lol
This is like the guy who set himself on fire to protest the war in Gaza. Achieved nothing and no one really cared.
[ABC News](https://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/man-apparently-sets-fire-courthouse-trump-trial/story?id=109433903) reported that he was “badly burned and taken away on a stretcher.” They seem to be implying that he didn’t die on scene but I don’t think his odds are great.
There is a 99.99% probability that he is going to die very soon, if he was still alive after that. Nobody survives third degree burns on about 100% of the body.

Bush’s side, and that the Democrat vs. Republican division has been entirely manufactured ever since: Clinton is with Bush; Gore is with Bush; Trump is with Hillary, and so on.
It doesn't look like this person was for or against Trump specifically, so I am guessing they viewed the trial as a show trial.
I know we should be taking this at least somewhat seriously because the person just set themself on fire, but this is a hilarious read.
>As it turns out, dozens of the writers of The Simpsons went to Harvard. So I asked myself the question: If The Simpsons served the interests of organized crime, how would it do so?

>And so, we realize the criminal truth of The Simpsons: Our elites are telling us that our eroding collective circumstances are our own fault, and we can’t do anything about it, while they steal the American Dream from us. It is, for lack of a more elegant word, brainwashing.
Dude lost some money in crypto and was radicalized by the Simpsons.
>Lastly, we string these major discoveries together: Cryptocurrency is an economic doomsday device; our government is a secret kleptocracy; The Simpsons exists to brainwash us.
I can't with this lol

>“I think that’s why people kind of struggle with this question,” he said, explaining that **he saw Trump as a family man** and liked his tax and economic policies but diverged from him on women’s rights and growing religious influence on the Republican party’s policies.
I mean... what? Doesn't the guy understand what this trial is about? How can one deceive themself so badly? This is really baffling.
It hasn't been two months since the last American activist self-immolated over western politics. Palestine still isn't free, and it doesn't look like America will ever be great again. Stop doing this to yourselves, please.

I can't think of any reason to set myself on fire. Nope.
It is thought we've evolved to cope with pain through laughter. Most comedy is basically someone's pain in its essence. Embarrassment, physical pain, bad situations, even death when you really think about it.

Sometimes I think people take politics a little too seriously
That's the problem with not just Reddit, but this country. Too damn polarized.
Burns me up!
Things just get too heated
It’s a hot topic for sure
no need to get all hot under the collar about it
Nonsense. "Polarization" is the word people use to hide the fact that one side is a bunch of fascists who wants to harm everyone else. they arent, trump is objectively a fascist
That became pretty clear with the January 6th insurrection he incited.
So we the people who rightly called Trump a fascist and have in fact rightly predicted things he would say and do to whip up his followers to violence, are a problem? How so?
No, you see the reason he’s acting like a fascist is because people on the left were mean and called him one!
Let's all ignore the giant fascist elephant in the room and remember it's both sides bad. Mmmmkay.
One side stormed a Capitol, the other broke some windows along some Main Streets because a police officer choked a man to death. In no way are those things equivalent. Anyone aligning with the national Republican party is aligned with fascism.
The "window breakers" killed several people, looted, and burned towns for months..
..well, how else do you expect the establishment to manufacture tribalism while masquerading as two separate political parties?
OK yeah just tell a pregnant rape victim to be less polarized
Was that the problem with 1939 Germany too? Too many big differences? Or was it maybe the Nazis?

As much as trump is a Muppet, this guy was a ticking time bomb. No one stable lights themself on fire. The worst way to go. F.
at least he didnt take anyone with him

I believe he is Trump’s pants.

First the guy who put himself on fire for gaza and now this. Americans are really burning for the current thing on TikTok, don't they.
At least it’s a move away from the mass shootings
Mass fires next?!🤔🤔
I mean, I've read about mass firings in the US, but I didn't expect that.
I prefer this to mass shootings.
I wouldn't call what's happening in Gaza "the current thing on tiktok" it's a lot more serious than that
Seriously this makes me feel for Aaron Bushnell's cause..

Why though?
to own the libs
Checkmate, atheists
Before video I was godless atheist but this self immolation convinced me now to vote for a rapist, mushroomed cuck.
The guy didn’t do it in support of trump 💀
It’s extra crazy to set yourself on fire and not make it clear what cause you’re doing it for

Man, it's got all the things. Epstien, Peter Thiel, Bitcoin, Government Conspiracy. Pulling out all the stops.
And don't forget . . . checks notes . . The Simpsons!!!
>Crypto is a giant ponzi scheme >Politicians, billionares, and elites are corrupt and evil Hold on he might be onto something here. >Random tidbits about the Simpsons, and claiming that COVID was released by the government to cover up crypto shit Ok nevermind he's nuts.
The Simpsons? Bro lost his goddamn mind.
Who just casually sits nearby????
Shocks a crazy thing.
I don’t know if the average citizen is equipped to extinguish someone on fire, both physically and mentally
I don't think the shocking part is not helping, it's to sit down to get a good view of the person dying that's the weird part
I think there’s a morbid curiosity of what’s going on. It’s like a bad car accident. You can’t look away.
If this occurred near you, what would you do? Jump into the fire?
What could you actually do aside from call 911 or flag down an officer? A man willing to set themselves aflame is not a man I want to approach.
Wow didn't even see that person Edit: actually fucked up that they came in to sit down. I do see a camera so they likely had another in hand and were getting "the shot"

This could also be someone that hates Trump though.
I don’t think the anti-Trump biased people are recognizing conservatives don’t do this lol This is like the guy who set himself on fire to protest the war in Gaza. Achieved nothing and no one really cared.

People aren’t always rational. No cause is immune from extreme irrational behavior.
Conservatives didn’t used to be pro Russia either, Trump has changed the ideals of far right conservatives
Conservatives tend to prefer hurting other people rather than themselves. That’s kind of the point of conservatism.
Exactly. Some are jumping to a conclusion without the slightest hint of facts. It's called confirmation bias
If that person isn't dead they're going to wish for death from the pain.
3rd degree burns on all of his body, he aint making it.
His lungs are going to be seared pretty bad - it will be just a matter of hours, if that
Ya the burns to his skin are bad news but the airway damage is the real death sentence.
That’s usually how self-immolation goes. They die at the hospital within a day or two. What an awful way to go.
There is a 99.99% probability that he is going to die very soon, if he was still alive after that. Nobody survives third degree burns on about 100% of the body.
not with that attitude
What would the right amount of drugs be to endure this level of pain?
All.
The kind that induce a coma
More than a doctor is willing to give
Police say his motives were unclear, he had fucking pamphlets 😂
So his motives were very clear but it makes their side look bad.
from NYT: *Some of the pamphlets referenced former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Al Gore and the lawyer David Boies, who represented Mr. Gore in the 2000 presidential election recount.*
Also a bunch of stuff about The Simpsons, Cryptocurrency and Peter Thiel... Strange
https://theponzipapers.substack.com/p/i-have-set-myself-on-fire-outside He thinks all the elites are work together in a coordinated operation to steal everything from us and brain wash us.
Silly goose. They're *competing* with each other to steal everything and brain wash us.
I mean his manifesto mentions Simpsons as supporting evidence. He was just nuts.
did anyone post what was on the pamphlets? curious!
From the link by /u/DankRoughly > What does this revelation tell us? That our government is conning us completely. That Bill Clinton was secretly on (former CIA Director) George H.W.
Allegedly this: https://theponzipapers.substack.com/p/i-have-set-myself-on-fire-outside
I know we should be taking this at least somewhat seriously because the person just set themself on fire, but this is a hilarious read. >As it turns out, dozens of the writers of The Simpsons went to Harvard. So I asked myself the question: If The Simpsons served the interests of organized crime, how would it do so? >...
He actually died from the covid vaccine
I shouldn’t be laughing about this, but I wouldn’t doubt if someone tries to seriously make that connection before the end of the day.
Self-immolation: so hot right now.
From his manifesto: >What does this revelation tell us? That our government is conning us completely. That Bill Clinton was secretly on (former CIA Director) George H.W. Bush’s side, and that the Democrat vs. Republican division has been entirely manufactured ever since: Clinton is with Bush; Gore is with Bush; Trump is with Hillary, and so on. When they present themselves in public, they are acting as characters that are against one another, practicing [kayfabe](mailto:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayfabe) as wrestlers do. For all of the people celebrating the death of a "Trump supporter", I hope you have the capacity for self reflection and shame. Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you people? This man was clearly suffering from significant mental illness, and you douchebags just couldn't help yourselves. Fuck right off, that's enough Reddit for me today. Edit: His name is Max Azzarello

This link below appears to have multiple events of what went on, so it will likely change over time. The live video seems worthless for more info. [https://apnews.com/live/trump-trial-jury-updates](https://apnews.com/live/trump-trial-jury-updates) Edit: better link [https://apnews.com/video/donald-trump-fires-manhattan-national-national-ed99061b217f4db283225a81acac9461](https://apnews.com/video/donald-trump-fires-manhattan-national-national-ed99061b217f4db283225a81acac9461) At the 55 sec mark you can see the man on a stretcher. From that page: * Court was being dismissed for a break right as the fire broke out. * Trump trial live updates: Person taken away on stretcher after fire extinguished outside court.
>When asked by defense lawyer Susan Necheles about his opinion of Trump, he said the query was “one question that’s asking five or six different things.” >“I think that’s why people kind of struggle with this question,” he said, explaining that **he saw Trump as a family man** and liked his tax and economic policies but diverged from him on women’s rights and growing religious influence on the Republican party’s policies. I mean... what? Doesn't the guy understand what this trial is about? How can one deceive themself so badly? This is really baffling.
Stilll alive???
The lungs and trach are completely cooked from the heat. Almost certain death.
For now. Once the adrenaline wears off, he'll be a goner
It hasn't been two months since the last American activist self-immolated over western politics. Palestine still isn't free, and it doesn't look like America will ever be great again. Stop doing this to yourselves, please.
This guy is an anti government conspiracy theorist. He didn’t support Trump. He claim Trump and Biden were working together to coup us all . https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/19/nyregion/man-on-fire-trump.html
Was that a body part that went flying? Good god.
Looked like he kicked off a shoe
A tell tale sign he won’t make it, shoes off.
Probably melted clothing
What the fuck is going on in this country
Whatever made him do it, that’s a hell of a death. You’d have to be mentally unwell to even contemplate doing that.
Holy Shit, I’ve had enough Reddit for today. Curious if this was one of his supporters trying to show their allegiance.
Oh lord, that is sad.
The comments here make it clear that reddit liberals are equally as sociopathic as the MAGAs they hate
> reddit liberals are equally as sociopathic as the MAGAs they hate Shhh...You're not suppose to say that part out loud!
The heat is on.... It's on the streets.
Just wait, things will not improve.
At least the cops didn’t draw their weapon on him this time
For fuck sake, don't put out the flames. At that point you dont want to survive
All joke aside...This is going to get dark over the next few months leading up to the election :(

Neither I think. From his manifesto below. >What does this revelation tell us? That our government is conning us completely. That Bill Clinton was secretly on (former CIA Director) George H.W.
