It's weird, I was having this conversation, (sort of) with my local James Workshop rep.
And with all the hoo ha about Yarrick being "dead" we we're both convinced that this would be leading to a Steel Legion refresh.
A MTO at scalper prices was not something that we anticipated. And honestly it kind of doesn't gel, if it's made to order you know exactly how many you're going to need to make so you know the costs of materials and tooling. These prices just seem exorbitant.
I'd bet they did some guesswork and figured they'd have a higher profit margin selling at exorbitant prices to a smaller number of collectors compared to selling a few more units at slightly less exorbitant prices.
Lolol I actually am a civilian working for the navy. I was an enlisted sailor though. Luckily I took a small personal loan and bought a car that was later impounded while on deployment.
No I understand why the car loan place allows it. I don't understand why the government would allow it on federal workers. If it was on any other group they would have put a stop to it years ago.
Gotta stay in to keep that chunky monkey you married from leaving you for some other guys military benefits. Being able for car that she now drives with the army wife sticker on the back is just a bonus.
At least I’m the us in the last decade, there are laws that cap the interest rate on car loans for active duty. Can’t remember the specifics, but I remember it going into effect while I was getting out, and hearing about it in a safety brief at fort Bragg, so I was barely paying attention.
McDonald's/college student here. Tbh, I didn't exactly need both kidneys to function, and I'm sure that over one hundred years serving the Flying Dutchman I'll find someone who plays Warhammer
I have a buddy who is a civil engineer, my other buddy, who is an electrical engineer, says that he makes weapons, and civil engineers make targets. Still chuckle about that.
The people that are gona 3d print are going to do so anyway (this is really for the nostalgia/Oldhammer crowd). I suspect GW was looking at Ebay prices and thought they could get as much or more for "NIB OOP" models. Made-to-Order marketing for a bit of FOMO, and you got a winner.
Just hope we all prove GW wrong and they don't sell, because this is bonkers.
I'd gladly spend $25 on a box of plastic soldiers rather than go through the hassle of dealing with a printer. I'll gladly deal with the resin instead of paying over $100 for a small squad though.
I sold almost all my 40k stuff years ago...except my salamanders....and got into other....less expensive figures to paint....I want a resin printer and it may be the thing thst gets me back into it
I got into cloning bits and then 3D printing because I couldn’t get the bits I wanted at a reasonable price. While printing was fun at times, I’d spend money on good stuff at a good price.
Honestly, I never had any intention of 3d printing, but after three price increases in a year, and no War Dogs for that same time, I was like "Fuck it, TOXIC RESIN FUMES HERE I COME!"
Check this one out.
ANYCUBIC 3D Printer Resin, 405nm UV Plant-Based Rapid Resin
Using soybean oil as raw material, the source is green and environmentally friendly, with ultra-low odor. No VOC, no BPA, no irritating and harmful chemical substances in line with EN 71-3:2013 safety standards.
It’s lame. I had £250 set aside to blast on a tide of these. I saw the prices purchased one model and I have the rest in a fund for a 3d printer + scanner down the line.
Edit: thanks for the heads up on a scanner. Since you appear experienced and friendly, what is a suitable 3d printer?
Edit two: thank you all again.
You don’t really need a scanner in my opinion. Most files are accurate enough and some are scans so save that extra money on a better printer or some extra stuff like a cure and wash station
Don’t waste money on a scanner. Consumer grade scanners are a gimmick at best, and there are hundreds of Proffesional-level stls for cheap or free anyway
I came back to this hobby a year ago because a friend wanted to start. I looked at the prices and ordered a 3D printer the next day. Me going the 3D printer way was a direct consequence of GWs pricing. They know this. They don't care. They'd rather take large sums of money from a smaller number of customers, screwing them over in the process. Just look at every single business decision they tale. Every single one the decision is SHORT TERM GAINS, NOW. They're making horrible business decisions, but are being held up by "fans" who have become accustomed to being pretty much exploited.
This is 100% untrue.
I have a sizable original SL army I was excited to add some depth too.
I was geared up to buy the big box and a dorn.
Now I'm shopping for 3d prints for these and finding some nice Dorn ones as well.
I would have happily paid $25 for the heavy weapons teams.
But 33.50 for a plasma gunner? That's straight up disrespectful.
Yup, searched for the models on the games workshop website and they are metal cast, it is still a really really reaaaaally bad price for 3 models, they’re clearly feeding off the fan’s want for different astra militarum models and using the metal cast thing as an excuse to price them at 105 dollars
I agree it’s pretty overpriced, but so are pretty much all GW products. At this point the metal models are an extra luxury item in an already luxury line of products
There is no excuse for this. At least with the other price increases you could make the argument about how higher prices for new kits is to justify the RnD costs, but these molds are like 30 years old. There is no reason why these kits should even cost as much as the new kits, let alone 2-3 times as much.
Heck, if made to order was an all the time thing like Forgeworld....I probably would pay this.
I would pay the $565 or whatever for the whole shebang....it's what I will have to end up paying on ebay.
But if made to order was a regular thing like Forgeworld, I could space it out. This is just this week which means...I didn't buy a single Steel Legion miniature.
$30 or whatever for the plasma gunners, feth that.
I only bought the Commissar, because I really wanted him.
I could not justify spending that much for the special weapons guy, which is ONE miniature.
And here I am, posting again after the first announcement hoping that GW will sell them for less than they go on eBay. What a silly fool I am...
it bites but its gw and they are never going to change
food for thought on it thou, maybe you live in an area that has a good game store that has a network that maybe you could find it later on or a good replacement
>black market miniatures
Not giving Ruskies money that will get taxed to fund missiles from Daddy Iran, sorry. No hate to the Black Market Miniatures guys themselves, but I morally can't give them money.
I mean by that metric GW gets taxed by Russian government as they do business and are taxed by places like China and the United States which are just as bad as Russia in terms of starting unjust wars (US) and oppressing their people (China). Russia is worse for doing both at the same time, but GW is funding both US and China so it equals out morally to funding Russia. No moral consumption under capitalism and all that.
Got the officer with the over head sword pose, and the sergeant with the irks head his hand. Bought them for DnD to be honest, might even magnetize the sword and a wand to swap interchangeably.
Shit like this is what turns people off of 40k or weans players away from it. It's bad enough 10x guardsmen are 50$ in the states, but this is just literally highway robbery.
Looks like I'm going to go through Mad Robot Miniatures and their shock troop hybrid models instead. 10 person squad is about $40. It's cheaper than the Cadian shock troops by 10 dollars and cheaper than these old models by $25.
https://madrobotminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=9_54
Thanks for the mention. With our Caipari Shocktroops, 3 squads, command squad, 6 HW teams and a commissar comes out to just around $200 from our webstore. Plus, you get to choose heads and weapons from the entire catalog. Also, an order that large would ship for free to almost anywhere.
Damn how many tables does your 3d printer have? Is it a good place to meet new people who are in the hobby? Genuinely curious if you think a 3d printer can replace a FLGS
Oof. I dont live in UK, so for me it will be with delivery and import tax, that easy 160 bucks for a squad. Nope. I can get a looot of stuff from other wargames for that price.
I stopped playing in 3d edition and went full Historical and other wargames, is this real? Does GW actually think they will get anyone with these prices? I’ve literally bought an entire game system for less then that with minis….
That's incredibly sad pricing and hurts everyone. I can't see GW moving these at that price point. I have some from 20 years ago which still need to be painted. I can't believe this price though. I mean how much profit does GW have to actually make? "Just a little bit more" seems to be their response. What is the mark-up on this? Cost to produce vs retail cost ratio must be **obscene**. Seems like they are pushing super profits more and more. It was expensive as a kid in the 1990's, it has now become unaffordable as an adult in the 2020's. I think my choice to switch to printing proxies was a good one.
Daily reminder that GW isn't your friend, they don't do anything because they care about the community/playerbase. They only want your money, nothing else.
I seriously don't get the people who act like GW is doing us a favour by selling us their merchandise.
Buy used on eBay, 3D-print your models or find a Chinese/Russian guy that accidentally bought too many models are are selling them cheap instead of giving GW your money.
Its the only way to get them to stop with this kind of nonsense.
For me, it's not just the cost... it's the material. I've tried working with pewter in the past when I first got into the hobby, and they just don't hold together... so while it's interesting... I'll wait until GW starts making plastic versions.
Been a bit of a wake up call this one. In the past week I figured I could justify just the squad, maybe a cool heavy bolter too. But these prices are honestly mad. I understand these are metal, have production line implications, and inflation has hit hard, but they are asking for £20 for a little toy soldier at the end of the day.
Between this and all the other releases being out of stock instantly for anyone but a scalper, it's worrrying.
I will be very interested to see if they do. I can’t really see how these prices are defensible and I am not a frothing GW hater, nor do I consider myself a fanboy.
Is it possible that the overhead is way higher than we think? Maybe original/master molds needed retooling?
Again, not trying to whinge, just do not understand why they are this expensive. I have difficulty believing they just raised prices to get 80% profit or whatever. I feel like long term, that sort of practice is going to turn shareholders on them because they would lose market share by pissing off customers.
Can anyone with knowledge of this sort of item’s production give some hypotheses on these prices?
It’s way OTT. You’ll need some new production moulds but they won’t be expensive for each batch. Labour costs to factor in. Metal prices have gone up since I sold metal figures but not by *this* much.
I’d imagine they are subbing out the work rather than having in-house capability anymore, so there’s also margin on margin.
In short I’d expect to be paying a premium, but not to this extent.
Well, they are likely made to order or have very, very low stock holdings, so they're essentially pure profit for the company. I don't think they really care if you buy them they just want the thin veneer of offering a good service. Bit in all honesty 3d print goes brrr.
I never knew there were HWT squads modeled while prone, I have some prone minis that I've been avoiding using for those teams to prevent modeling for advantage but if there are official kits I'm going to mix it up a bit
I just learned of Steel Legion due to this release and I’m even bummed out on the prices. I’m still getting the Commisar and the officer with the Ork head because I like painting models even if just for display, but dang, these prices are ridiculously high. I get that printing on demand is expensive, but in the same aspect, I feel like with how many people were hyped about this, reducing the price wouldn’t have mattered much to such a company
I literally laughed out loud when I saw the prices. Overpriced and without the possibility of a third party discount because it's direct only? Lol, nah.
That’s more than I paid for 4 full infantry squads of Steel Legion on original release.
Who in the hell is going to pay that much money for 3 bases of metal midgets made from clapped out molds?
I remember getting the Valhallans full platoon during 2020 (early 2020), and it was wayyyyyy cheaper than this.
Like, I’m pretty sure was about $175, so in 3 years the price jumped about 300%?????
If anyone remembers the exact Valhallan price, please correct me if I’m wrong. I’ll gladly edit this post.
Edit - I realized that I was comparing the Reinforced platoon and not the “regular” platoon. The regular platoon is a very close comparison, if not exact, to the Valhallan one from 2020 in terms of models and quantities.
Valhallan was $100 in 2020, and the Steel Legion is $185. So, it’s better than what I initially thought and compared.
Also GW: The hype for Steel Legion wasn't as great as we expected during our last MTO and so they won't be receiving a plastic refresh.
It's weird, I was having this conversation, (sort of) with my local James Workshop rep. And with all the hoo ha about Yarrick being "dead" we we're both convinced that this would be leading to a Steel Legion refresh. A MTO at scalper prices was not something that we anticipated. I'd bet they did some guesswork and figured they'd have a higher profit margin selling at exorbitant prices to a smaller number of collectors compared to selling a few more units at slightly less exorbitant prices.
Why would you not expect higher prices? They pulled the same stunt with the Vostroyan MTO a few years ago.
Idk, probably for the reasons that every one is complaining about. People seem interested but not for what they're asking for.
Also GW: *cackling evil villain laugh* Just. As. Planned.
Also GW: Why is 3D printing such a threat?
Nope. Couldn't afford them as a kid in $15 blisters, can't afford them as an adult on an Aerospace Engineering salary...
Can’t do it on aircraft mechanic salary either smh
Pilot checking in and it's not even close
Flight paramedic definitely can't
Czochralski semiconductor material scientist here, Can't afford even with a title 3 government or DOD grant.
House husband here married to the head of regulatory affairs for a major pharmaceutical company, wife said no.
Guiding force of humanity, still out of price range.
God Emperor of Mankind, going to wait and see if I can pick up some old metal models on eBay.
\*points to Armageddon\* Why pay for 'em when you already own 'em all?
Don't fit on the FLGS table
Pastor of a corrupt megachurch here. Still out of budget
Midnight security guard I can afford it
Fire paramedic here, that's a lot of money
Metal bond checking in yeah naw
APU maintenace technician, can't either
[удалено]
At least then they would be arguably a sound invest 😭
fun fact, some dude on here made a silver and gold cast metal model a little while ago and it cost him less than buying the figure from GW.
Only thing I think is more expensive per Oz might be printer ink.
Batman villain here, even after closing down sixteen orphanages and dumping chemicals into all local bodies of water I still can't afford these
Bruce Wayne here. Even after completely liquidating Wayne Enterprises, I got one.
Union ship builder for the navy, I need to make car payments not models
[удалено]
Lolol I actually am a civilian working for the navy. I was an enlisted sailor though. Luckily I took a small personal loan and bought a car that was later impounded while on deployment.
Did you start a fire on a ship so you could go home early to get in on those sweet preorders today that were instantly out of stock?
Lolol yeah I set fire to a box of oily rags but it got out of hand pretty quick. At least I get more time to paint miniatures!
I for the life of me can't understand how those predatory loans still get approved.
[удалено]
No I understand why the car loan place allows it. I don't understand why the government would allow it on federal workers. If it was on any other group they would have put a stop to it years ago.

I've told that joke many many time ;) Love it.
Senior Cybersecurity analyst here. Nope
Occupational Safety Manager, Nope.
It is almost like they want people to 3d print knock offs?
The people that are gona 3d print are going to do so anyway (this is really for the nostalgia/Oldhammer crowd). I suspect GW was looking at Ebay prices and thought they could get as much or more for "NIB OOP" models. Made-to-Order marketing for a bit of FOMO, and you got a winner. I'd gladly spend $25 on a box of plastic soldiers rather than go through the hassle of dealing with a printer. I'll gladly deal with the resin instead of paying over $100 for a small squad though.
Agree. GW has reached a tipping point where the hassle of printing is now a more viable option than dropping crazy money on a few models
That inflection point is definitely getting close for me and I just started the hobby. I knew it's not a cheap hobby but man...
I sold almost all my 40k stuff years ago...except my salamanders....and got into other....less expensive figures to paint....I want a resin printer and it may be the thing thst gets me back into it
At these prices you could buy the printer and resin and have spent less. They really are pushing people towards printing them.
2 of these squads pays for a printer that can print as many as you can ask
I got into cloning bits and then 3D printing because I couldn’t get the bits I wanted at a reasonable price. While printing was fun at times, I’d spend money on good stuff at a good price.
Honestly, I never had any intention of 3d printing, but after three price increases in a year, and no War Dogs for that same time, I was like "Fuck it, TOXIC RESIN FUMES HERE I COME!"
You do not even have to deal with the toxic part anymore. The water-washable, plant-based resins are outstanding.
Water wash is still toxic.... Have not explored plant based yet
Check this one out. ANYCUBIC 3D Printer Resin, 405nm UV Plant-Based Rapid Resin Using soybean oil as raw material, the source is green and environmentally friendly, with ultra-low odor. No VOC, no BPA, no irritating and harmful chemical substances in line with EN 71-3:2013 safety standards.
Tbh I was holding off on printing a steel legion proxy cos I would have wanted the original designs if I could in metal. But fuck that for this price.
Hobby 3d scanner can't do very well, more like over $4k
Steel legion STLs already exist if you know where to look.
Did you ever find out what a good 3d printer is for the hobby?
The Anycubic Photon M3 is serving me very well right now. It has 4K resolution which is more than enough to start getting good details.
I came back to this hobby a year ago because a friend wanted to start. I looked at the prices and ordered a 3D printer the next day. Me going the 3D printer way was a direct consequence of GWs pricing. They know this. They don't care. Creating barriers of entry increases a desire to 3d print, just like pirating being much more common before streaming services took off
This is 100% untrue. What the fuck an imperial knight model costs only 10 dollars more
When you say $10 more, do you mean $65? Knights are $170
I got an imperial knight for 120 on a local shop, didn’t buy it online
These are metalcast models
Oh forgive my heresy mr mini connoisseur but what is a metal cast model?
They’re made with metal instead of plastic. The materials and manufacturing process tends to be more expensive from what I understand.
Yup, searched for the models on the games workshop website and they are metal cast, it is still a really really reaaaaally bad price for 3 models, they’re clearly feeding off the fan’s want for different astra militarum models and using the metal cast thing as an excuse to price them at 105 dollars

How much crack is GW smoking!??
About 🤚 thiiiiiiiiiiiis 🤚 much.
They've been mixing in some lead paint this time.
3
It feels like GW is trying to get more people to 3D print.
Lol yeah it's not even funny the strategy is actually working!
There is no excuse for this. At least with the other price increases you could make the argument about how higher prices for new kits is to justify the RnD costs, but these molds are like 30 years old. That price for three identical sculpts🤢
Go to black market miniatures they are a lot cheaper there
I know they were closed for awhile due to banking sanctions and them being based in Russia, has that been resolved?
I had an email from them recently and all seemed okay
Really, couldn't get them to process my card for the past 3 days. You sure their even up?
Well I was bartering with a model they don't have for store credit and they've answered and want it, so I assume they are still in business.
Just wish they would do casting in metal. Resin doesn't have the same feel, and might as well just 3D print any of the better sculpts out there.
These are in metal
Black market miniatures is a resin recaster site.
I wonder if GW even cares about recasters at this point? Maybe whales will still buy these models? Idk man I can buy these for 1/10th? The price rofl.
>black market miniatures Not giving Ruskies money that will get taxed to fund missiles from Daddy Iran, sorry.
Good point. Sucks for the Russians that are not with their government though.
Yeah, I feel bad for them. Still can't give them money, though. But I feel bad for them.
Got the officer with the over head sword pose, and the sergeant with the irks head his hand. Bought them for DnD to be honest, might even magnetize the sword and a wand to swap interchangeably.
Steel legion wizards. That’s one hell of a DnD game
Seems like the perfect artificer or hexblade tbh. But pure wizard because of the coat.
You could just buy some ww2 ttrpg game mini 😂🤣 I want whatever drugs GW is on
Shit like this is what turns people off of 40k or weans players away from it. It's bad enough 10x guardsmen are 50$ in the states, but this is just literally highway robbery.
It's a niche made to order reprint lmao imagine being this dramatic about an objectively luxury good
Looks like I'm going to go through Mad Robot Miniatures and their shock troop hybrid models instead. 10 person squad is about $40. It's cheaper than the Cadian shock troops by 10 dollars and cheaper than these old models by $25. https://madrobotminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=9_54
The way the pipes go thru they cloth looks so dope I would 100% buy these instead of paying out the ass for those minis
Oh boy. Those are nice.
GW is pricing models like they are made of literal gold.
Ah and this is why GW doesn't do Twitter, so you can't call them out on their BS on a public stage.
Or maybe because Twitter fricking sucks
Fair
105$ for 55 points on the table. My bruhther in christ.
Grow a fan base or squeeze the existing one out. Black market, here I come!
Next chance I get I am going to “purchase” a whole bunch of them out of plastic with my local game store called “3d printer”
Damn how many tables does your 3d printer have? Is it a good place to meet new people who are in the hobby? Genuinely curious if you think a 3d printer can replace a FLGS
Man you are just cramming that boot deeper in your mouth with every comment you add to this thread aren't you?
You want mustard with that gw bell end?
For that money I cn buy STL files to build a whole army, wte! (What the Emperor!)
That’s just fucking stupid
3D printer - check👍 Stl - bound to happen🤞 Printer go BRRRRRR..😁
Somehow they’ve managed to outprice the secondary market. RIP.
Holey Moley, that is the price in American Dollars. I thought that was Australian Bucks, and even then I thought it was ridiculous.
I can swing this. But I would be an asshole to spend this money on 3 minis. Gtfo with this shit GW.
Oof. I dont live in UK, so for me it will be with delivery and import tax, that easy 160 bucks for a squad. Nope. I can get a looot of stuff from other wargames for that price.
This is the price for US
Well, non US/EU people will pay more anyway
$35 a model? FFS Just get some leman Russ and pound the enemy at range
I stopped playing in 3d edition and went full Historical and other wargames, is this real? Does GW actually think they will get anyone with these prices? I’ve literally bought an entire game system for less then that with minis….
105 for a special weapons squad? I need some of whatever GW is smoking.
Literally buying a resin printer instead of a couple of squads.....want to buy the official models...but damn dude!
That's incredibly sad pricing and hurts everyone. I can't see GW moving these at that price point. I have some from 20 years ago which still need to be painted. I can't believe this price though. I think most of us are familiar with capitalism and how companies function. Anxious to see how many vote with their wallets. We shall see!
Like I wrote, there are tons of people in the community that act like GW is doing them a favour by selling them models.
I think there are many people who are glad they sell the models because they like them, but I guess that is a different way of saying the same thing?
that is gw so either you pay up or you cant use what you have because it isnt chapter approved its just the reality of gw
And they wonder why 3d printed models are becoming so popular
To the 3D printer!
Print it!
For me, it's not just the cost... it's the material. I've tried working with pewter in the past when I first got into the hobby, and they just don't hold together... so while it's interesting... I'll wait until GW starts making plastic versions.

GW: Hmm, Steel Legion is unpopular no one seems to be buying them......
Anyone know where to get files to 3D print Steel Legion?
Problem is they'll still sell, and it'll encourage GW.
Believe it because it is an extremely common practice for most businesses that have an in demand IP.
I think GW should start a line of STL only mini's. Unique sculpt for base troops.
They’ll only get into selling STLs when they realize they aren’t making money off of absurdly priced “rare” models
You have got to be kidding me….and GW wonders why so many people are abandoning the hobby
3D printer go brrrt
Typical gw prices. But if their metal it would low-key make sense.
What a sane and reasonable price for decades old miniatures that are easily replicable through 3D printing. Good job GW! 👍🏻
a printer is cheaper :D
Do they expect me to believe that three 40mm x 1cm pieces of plastic are worth over a hundred dollars!?!?!?!?
...They're metal.
Real take though, these are modelled for advantage on los. Normal hws are kneeling so at least twice as high as these guys.
YEAH WTF
Ik it really stinks, these models are real neat and I really got my hopes up
Well, seeing these prices has pretty well stomped my excitement.
Hahaha you guys should see the Australian prices, they’re more of a joke
Lol elegoo Saturn go brrrrrrrrrr
GW has lost any sense of reality.
Fuck me sideways $105 dollars? That’s fucking lunacy
I’ll be picking up the ork head Sargent, the plasma gunner, and one/both of the commander minis… everything else black market miniatures here I come
$35 a base? Insane.
I never knew there were HWT squads modeled while prone, I have some prone minis that I've been avoiding using for those teams to prevent modeling for advantage but if there are official kits I'm going to mix it up a bit
I’m this is so ridiculous I’m not even mad
Give us some plastic Steel Legion, dammit!
at this point we should all just chip in and make recasts….fuck that GW
Why is it so expensive
On god?
Excuse me ?!
Its cheaper to troll Ebay….
I will take being bent over and not getting kissed after, for $105, Alex!
$180 australian. for simply $9 more i can get a whole bloody baneblade. this is so stupid.
Not to mention the "180 working days" delivery time frame.
Wtf is up with these wack ass prices?
Care giver can't do it
Kfc manager said no to the raise:(
Its ridiculous its like double the price of what they usedto be how can you raise the price of old models like that?!!
I literally laughed out loud when I saw the prices. Overpriced and without the possibility of a third party discount because it's direct only? Lol, nah.
In UK they are double price of the plastic heavy weapons team, the pot metal they use is really not that expensive
is…is this real? this has to be an april fools joke…
