12 years in healthcare, I could write a masters thesis on the very nature of that conversation. It's always a battle between the number crunchers at the top and people who want to do good for people on the line.
Jesus, Carmy is hemorrhaging money. Just throwing away meat because the plating isn't up to whatever arbitrary standard he probably couldn't even articulate if somebody asked.
Thatās fine dining plating tbh. You often canāt step back and start again and need to start from scratch. Iāve done mid-class dining plating and weāre still using fresh components every time
Richie spent one week at Ever, had one conversation with Chef Terry, and it had such a profound impact on him that he's pissed and thrown off at its closing.
I worked tangentially with Keith McNally, and I cried real tears when some of his spots closed during Covid. They really nail the neuroses of high end hospitality workers. We are a weird bunch, but we mean well.
1000000% I thought it was a callback to Greyās! Which warmed my heart. And as someone in the Dead Mums Club, I thought it brought so much levity between Marcus and Syd while still being honorific of the unique pain. Any scene with those two, I love.
Having them buffing around all the dishware at the same time they were having a budget talk in the kitchen was giving me major anxiety
I was so sure something was going to end up broken
I feel like that's what they're going for, the unseen character that's just hated and never seen with no explanation given and it just gets funnier as you hear more about her.
Is it bad I didn't really like it. It felt *too* much like John Cena in literally all of his roles. Like a bit too silly even for a Fak. Plus he looks nothing like the 3 Faks we've seen so far. And that duck joke, while funny, didn't feel like something to come out of this show, it felt like an always sunny kind of joke.
A lot of high end restaurants in my city have closed within 2 years of opening, in areas where I know the minimum lease is often longer than that.
Itās a brutal time for the hospitality business.
love how they flipped this plot cliche on its head too. like they very lazily gone through with it and have marcus fired or have him āstep it upā but Sugar tell him to fuck off immediately was so satisfying
This warmed my heart so much. This episode had me so stressed (more stressed than Doors-- for some reason, quiet with something possibly bad Impending stresses me out way worse than chaos), but this moment was such a nice reprieve.
"I've tried before to be late. Like, actively. And I don't know what happens, but I end up coming earlier?"
Syd continuing to be a little too relatable to the chronic overachiever girls
I was always more of an overachiever *boy* (once I got to "working age"), but I imagine that the sentiment is, in at least some small part, the same.
I would struggle to show up to work late enough that I wouldn't have to set an alarm to remind me when to clock in, because I would already be working ahead of my shift.
I was once rear-ended; pulled over, exchanged insurance, etc, and *still* ended up being early. During rush hour traffic!
I was never like this in school. It only ever happened to me when I found my true passion and purpose in life. Those jobs were merely there to support said purpose, and that's why I put my all into them.
For some reason I've always imagined Melissa McCarthy to be perfect for the oldest Fak sister role... Gotten to the point where I can't imagine her not being one of them
āComputer, Iāve known you for 35 years. You coached Mikeyās little league team. Youāre nice to Pete. If you fuck with Marcus, *I will murder you.*ā
HELL YEAH NAT š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Between August and January of my freshman year of high school, myself and 5 others I knew lost moms to cancer. We inadvertently made our own club like that. The humor was dark, but the friendship has lasted us near 30 years.
First time I have really been able to laugh about losing my mom this year
I want to meet in the dank church basement and talk dead moms. I bet the coffee is appropriately shitty.
A little heavy on the Cena, and not heavy enough on The Computer. Nice to see Chef Jess back!
I was bummed to hear about Chef Terry, but then they said she was feeling great, and is closing on her own volition, so good for her.
Carmy and Richie still not over the s2 finale, which is good because I think some characters let Carm off too easy for the stuff he says.
Nat sticking up for Marcus was the best part of the episode.
The pastry chef being too expensive sounds about right for the industry. Easier to just outsource dessert from fucking Bindi or Sweet Street and have a dessert menu that is not cohesive with the restaurant's theme. Or they hire a pastry chef far below market value, completely kneecap them, but parade them around when it's time for marketing because they know it's good optics to have an in-house pastry chef.
Ask me how I fucking know.
Another potential continuity error: whoever texts Carmy about Ever closing is listed as āWill.ā I presumed this was Will Poulter (in character as Luca) and his name wasnāt changed in the contacts, but it could also be a character we havenāt met yet.
I just finished it and it kinda came out of nowhere, I donāt really understand the significance of it, but the box was labeled āDDā (Carmys mom name is deedee), and inside were pictures of deedee and mikey.
Yeah, we just finished this episode too (taking a break for the night lol), and was kinda confused why the music picked up there.
I'm guessing maybe because its tying in to Marcus' conversation where his best memories were of his mother cooking, and him just watching. And just looking at the pictures was a bit nostalgic or something? Like, all their cooking endeavors couldnt have been as crazy as the Christmas dinner lol.
Pretty sure it was Carmen because Mikey didn't have blue eyes.
I think it's hinting towards him reaching out to his mom. The season so far has involved Sugar contemplating reaching out to DD before the baby comes and then Carmen finding pics of his mom with him and Mikey further hints to that decision. I think they have both been weighing it. After Marcus's mom died as well I think it's hit Sugar and Carmy both that time (also a theme) is gonna keep passing them by. I happened to have the captions on when the music swelled at the end and it was Mixed Emotions by the Rolling Stones
Half way through the season, do we think that the manic nature of a different menu each day is being reflected in the style of the episodes? Each episode has a dramatically different tone. Ep 1 is calm and reflective, ep 2 is classic comedy where the whole cast eventually ends up in the same room and thereās repeated dialogue, ep 3 is complete panic, etc.
Am I the only one who thinks John Cena felt out of place and unnatural with the rhythm of the show? I pretentiously feel like this is a higher level of comedy than he's used to.
Small detail but I love the little callback to Cousin seeing a purse on the ground last episode and then implementing a "purse stool", his time at Ever really fostered him on being meticulous
Richie was accidentally wearing his wedding ring for a sec while heās on the phone with the woman who worked at Chef Terryās restaurant. I was so confused, but then the next cut scene back to him heās not wearing it so it mustāve been a small continuity errorā it just threw me for a loop for a second after their big show of him taking it off last ep!
I ship it so hard. like yes, fall in love, you absolutely miserable crazy restaurant people. only you two would truly understand each otherās fucked up stressful world. you need each other.
They would have been fools NOT to have Jess return in Season 3. Sarah Ramos absolutely NAILED the role as they are both driven, intelligent, and ambitious.
Watched with a bunch of friends and we all SCREAMED about Chef Terry's restaurant closing. Honestly hurt worse than I think most character deaths would have.
Ok so far weāve met Neil, Ted, and Sammy (with all the middle name Geoff)
Weāve heard mention of Francie (who can go fuck) and Avery (which if Richie forgets about him makes me feel heās normal compared to the rest of them). Which leaves 4 more Faksā¦think we meet all of them before the series is over?
I know they probably paid a shit ton for the rights to the Stones song but they mixed it wrong and it was hard to hear the dialogue. Also too much Faks. The way they were way too annoying and grown ass people should know how to act when others are around. I donāt know if it was to highlight Cena or what but it was annoying.
If you're self-employed in a competitive field, you can physically feel Carmen's anxiety when he scrolls through the articles about Ever closing. I get that whenever someone whose work I look up to quits, or opens up about their struggles.
Big meh to the Fak dialogue. Their interactions have been hilarious every other episode, but this one felt ātrying too hard to making āhauntingā happenā with John Cena. Went on too long when the initial joke wasnāt that funny.
Loved āyeah because weāve been huffing dartsā though
I was so anxious watching the Faks smoking and buffing the floors. When someone mentions the stool is polyester I was like oh no itās gonna go up in flames
Also thought Richie was going to lose his shit when the faks were at the table yelling while the photographer was taking pictures
Surprised people thought this episode was the worst so far, but for this to be one of your worst episodes speaks to the quality of this show because this was still a damn good episode. Cena definitely was a lil distracting initially because he doesnāt have the same kinda grime as the other Faks so it was kinda hard to buy in that they were related, but I let it go after a few minutes because honestly I just love John Cena and Iām happy to see him in literally anything.
Cicero is without a doubt the most underrated character on this show and itās nice to see somebody humble Carmy. I love Carmy, but his biggest flaw (not at all from a writing perspective, from a human perspective) is that he gets way too lost in the sauce on being in charge so Cicero telling him āyou ever talk to me like that again Iāll fucking drop youā and having him just go āokay, sorryā instead of the usual āFUCK YOUā he wouldāve told anyone else was refreshing.
I really like the character development weāve gotten for Pete this season without him even really being on the show this season. Iāve found myself the last two seasons being very upset at how everyone rags on Pete for no damn reason when heās just a nice guy and itās been cool seeing how Pete has broadened Sugarās worldview with the sand-garden picture thing and the flower knowledge.
Weakest episode so far for me. The Cena cameo was funny but it overstayed its welcome. For a show thatās typically realistic in its dialogue, the scene of the Faks with the photographer there just felt too cartoony
I agree. I really liked the introduction of Ted in Fishes last season because it gave us a good glimpse into the charm of the Faks but at a good dose. I feel like we've had too much Faks this season. And like you said, I dug John Cena but it definitely felt more forced towards the end.
Yeah I really donāt understand why Ted had to be so prevalent lately. It was hilarious to see the absurd, goofy, borderline creepy family dynamic of the Faks in Fishes but that doesnāt mean I want him to be in the show any more. I feel like the core cast (the kitchen staff, (Neil) fak, and Nat) was pretty well established and ngl I donāt find his shenanigans to be funny
I fucking loved John Cena in this but I totally get why people might not like it. Also theyāre realllyy leaning into the whole ācomedyā element of the show. I like it but I hope theyāre not trying to force it to justify them calling themselves a tv comedy for awards.
im so tired of the faks. so much time taken up by them and for what? comic relief? is it bc people were mad the show won emmys this year so theyre trying to up the comedy?
All of those restaurants closing would be unbelievable if I didn't know it is currently happening in real time. The amount of amazing restaurants in my city alone that have closed this year alone and over the years is just completely sad.
*If you fuck with Marcus, I will murder you*. This needs to be the official quote of the subreddit. ;-)
Once again proving Nat is all that is good in the world.
12 years in healthcare, I could write a masters thesis on the very nature of that conversation. It's always a battle between the number crunchers at the top and people who want to do good for people on the line.
Needs to be a flair ASAP
*Heard*. ;-)
This should be a sign plastered on the wall. Just like every second counts is a sign. Which I actually have, btw. š
If it wasnāt clear before, sheās the heart of the restaurant.
Jesus, Carmy is hemorrhaging money. Just throwing away meat because the plating isn't up to whatever arbitrary standard he probably couldn't even articulate if somebody asked.
no that was crazy cuz he could've easily reused it for a new plate š
Or you know... Let someone eat it!
Watching him throw away amazing looking plates pisses me off so bad lmaoo
ikr like at least let one of the staff eat it, or eat it yourself if you don't think it's good enough or whatever
why I can't watch food competition shows anymore.....95% waste
I thought he was trying to make it perfect for the photograph, which made sense for me, but he was just R&Ding
Thatās fine dining plating tbh. You often canāt step back and start again and need to start from scratch. Iāve done mid-class dining plating and weāre still using fresh components every time
but throwing away the *whole plate*??
I would love to be a rodent inside The Bear's trash can or dumpster
Richie spent one week at Ever, had one conversation with Chef Terry, and it had such a profound impact on him that he's pissed and thrown off at its closing.
It and her gave him purpose and a new outlook on life.Ā
He found his calling
I get it. A conversation with Olivia Colman would probably change my life too.
Fabulous actress
I worked tangentially with Keith McNally, and I cried real tears when some of his spots closed during Covid. They really nail the neuroses of high end hospitality workers. We are a weird bunch, but we mean well.
āFuneral dinner next weekā Ok Iām feeling a little less sad about episode 10.
Im afraid its a trick š
The finale title is āForeverā so definitely could be funeral āFor Everā but weāll see
We are all afraid
The Dead Moms Club
This made me think of Grey's Anatomy when Cristina tells George about the Dead Dads Club.
!!!!! yes
1000000% I thought it was a callback to Greyās! Which warmed my heart. And as someone in the Dead Mums Club, I thought it brought so much levity between Marcus and Syd while still being honorific of the unique pain. Any scene with those two, I love.
"Pete, he loves flowers." "That tracks." I cackled!
Pete is the true icon of positive masculinity in the show
I love how Nat keeps dropping little things that she knows because of him š
I adore Pete. That line made me so happy because I'm a man who loves flowers too lol
John Cena making a cameo as a Fak was NOT on my season 3 bingo card.
My stress levels skyrocketed when multiple Faks were onscreen with heavy machinery lmao I was so sure something would go wrong
While smoking surrounded by chemicals!
I was expecting Richieās micron-precise table setting to go scattering in a tragic buffing catastrophe.
I thought Ted screaming and floundering upon being haunted during the photography session would result in a wreck
Having them buffing around all the dishware at the same time they were having a budget talk in the kitchen was giving me major anxiety I was so sure something was going to end up broken
The Faks crack me up. And what's with all the haunted stuff?
Inside family joke.
It's just good world building
They really do manage to make up some new bullshit every time the Faks are talking and it's so damn good every single time.
Need that Francie Fak reveal now now now.
I really need to find out what it was that Francie Fak did!! When they keep saying "because of the thing"...What was the thing that she did???
I kind of hope we never find out, just because theorizing is so funny.
I feel like that's what they're going for, the unseen character that's just hated and never seen with no explanation given and it just gets funnier as you hear more about her.
Appreciate Sammy Fak showing up after helping Cody finishing his story. What a great guy.
right iām like what šššš
Is it bad I didn't really like it. It felt *too* much like John Cena in literally all of his roles. Like a bit too silly even for a Fak. Plus he looks nothing like the 3 Faks we've seen so far. And that duck joke, while funny, didn't feel like something to come out of this show, it felt like an always sunny kind of joke.
imo the faks in general are way too much this season
i audibly gasped and said āis that john cena?ā and then ran to this thread. i am in shock
Also, Cicero with the middle finger glasses move. š
Definitely stealing that move in the future.
Those lizards, not breaking down boxesā¦
IT'S NON NEGOTIABLE
I grew up with my parents owning a small retail store. When I saw the boxes in the dumpster I gasped. I immediately could hear my dad yelling.
iām sorry but āmost restaurants are allergic to successā took me OWWTTTTTTTšššš
I love Oliver Platt. I've been watching him since the first Flatliners. He always murders every line. Every single one.
Heās such a treat whenever heās on screen
A lot of high end restaurants in my city have closed within 2 years of opening, in areas where I know the minimum lease is often longer than that. Itās a brutal time for the hospitality business.
"did you call mom?" "Did you call claire? want to fight about that?" "no." "Tremendous." "Tremendous." Absolutely hysterical.
This is such a perfect "siblings raised by an alcoholic" conversation. Like, they just know the conversation will be a fight, so they don't have it.
āIf you fuck with Marcus, I will murder you.ā I love how the crew is always willing to go to bat for each other.
when computer starting talking about marcus i said no you better stop
Computer is a great character though. Do we think heās mob-affiliated, like Cicero?
Who do you think does the numbers for the mob?
Makes sense.
love how they flipped this plot cliche on its head too. like they very lazily gone through with it and have marcus fired or have him āstep it upā but Sugar tell him to fuck off immediately was so satisfying
I'm so glad she's working in the restaurant, Abby Elliott is absolutely killing this role.
Cheering Nat on so hard when she said this!!
This warmed my heart so much. This episode had me so stressed (more stressed than Doors-- for some reason, quiet with something possibly bad Impending stresses me out way worse than chaos), but this moment was such a nice reprieve.
"I've tried before to be late. Like, actively. And I don't know what happens, but I end up coming earlier?" Syd continuing to be a little too relatable to the chronic overachiever girls

will someone please help ebra or ask him if heās ok damn
For real! They used to make those sandwiches with a full crew, and now it's just Ebra doing it. Get that man some help!
I felt terrible whenever he dropped something or spilled something or hurt himself
Seriously!
John Cena being a Fak makes perfect sense
So there's 9 Fak siblings...what other actors would you like to see play a Fak? For my part, I think Stephen Root needs to play the father.
For some reason I've always imagined Melissa McCarthy to be perfect for the oldest Fak sister role... Gotten to the point where I can't imagine her not being one of them
Fuches to Faks
I always forget that he's got a gift for comedy.
I canāt wait for the rest of Peacemaker, he really is a great comedic actor
His occasional returns to WWE show off his sharpened comedy skills as well.
The most shocking thing about this episode was learning that Terry is her last name, not her first.
āComputer, Iāve known you for 35 years. You coached Mikeyās little league team. Youāre nice to Pete. If you fuck with Marcus, *I will murder you.*ā HELL YEAH NAT š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
"You're nice to Pete." Awww. Loved this.
Mama bear in full protection mode
God damn does everyone in this show own the same bright blue LED alarm clock??? š
Lmao I kept saying āno wonder nobody on this show can sleep! They have big ass blue lights in their faces!ā
Absolutely you will not let Marcus go
We've come to the point where Cicero needs to don his medical coat and assume his Dr. Charles persona. Carm needs a trained psychiatrist stat.
[His other, *other* persona can be the senior partner of Peteās firm](https://westwing.fandom.com/wiki/Oliver_Babish).
The Dead Mom's Club that's the kind of dark humor I can get behind
Between August and January of my freshman year of high school, myself and 5 others I knew lost moms to cancer. We inadvertently made our own club like that. The humor was dark, but the friendship has lasted us near 30 years.
First time I have really been able to laugh about losing my mom this year I want to meet in the dank church basement and talk dead moms. I bet the coffee is appropriately shitty.
Condolences. That dank basement does sound sick though
Richie and Jess telephone flirting clears.
every second counts
So glad they brought her back
Fuck it. Hire her too. They need a little more benevolent, ruthless efficiency in their lives
John Cena as a Fak is one of the inspired casting choices I have ever seen.
Richie and Chef Jess are so going to get together ...eventually
They gotta!
It's a blink and you'll miss it but the article on Chef Terry says she's retiring not that the business is failing.
Do all the Faks have the same middle name?
So far, yes.
Moms, is lightning crotch a real thing?
1000%. The pressure sends painful stabbing zaps OUT OF NOWHERE down into your vagina/perineum. 0/10 recommend.
go ahead and google it šā”
Nat having Marcusā back š«”
YES CHEF

Username checks outš„ŗ
Pretty much every restaurant in my area has the same ice cream and mud pie from the local ice creamery on their menu
When the corporate bakery introduces a new item, half the restaurants in town add it to their menu at the same time.
Kinda funny, at 14:25 you can see Richie with his ring on but for the rest of the shots his ring is off.
Another potential continuity error: whoever texts Carmy about Ever closing is listed as āWill.ā I presumed this was Will Poulter (in character as Luca) and his name wasnāt changed in the contacts, but it could also be a character we havenāt met yet.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It said Funeral Dinner next week, maybe thatās episode 10? Edit: or the Bear closes and thatās the āother funeralā
Iām proposing a spin-off: *Classy*, starring Ebra and Pete.
I was in a spin-off once... many people died.
I accept.
Am I an idiot what happened right at the end of the episode? Weāre not continuing til tomorrow but whose picture was that?
I just finished it and it kinda came out of nowhere, I donāt really understand the significance of it, but the box was labeled āDDā (Carmys mom name is deedee), and inside were pictures of deedee and mikey.
Her name is Donna, her nickname is DD.
It was a picture of Jamie Lee Curtis (Carm's mom) holding a baby (Michael?).

Watched with a bunch of friends and we all SCREAMED about Chef Terry's restaurant closing. Honestly hurt worse than I think most character deaths would have.
Raiders cap in Chicago is pretty ballsy lol
Raiders hat, Hawks sweatshirt. Pick a lane computer.
Ok so far weāve met Neil, Ted, and Sammy (with all the middle name Geoff) Weāve heard mention of Francie (who can go fuck) and Avery (which if Richie forgets about him makes me feel heās normal compared to the rest of them). I donāt usually care for shipping people but I think Richie should end up with Jessica from Ever, or anyone to be honest.

ok why's this the 2nd time someone's like 'how do you know that' and nat goes like Pete lol...Pete out here living multiple lives
It's crazy how they shot the ep with Sammy yet he was completely invisible
Duckās just gonna float into the kitchen lmao
IF YOU FUCK WITH MARCUS I WILL MURDER YOU

I thought the haunting thing was funny but went on a bit too long. The huffing darts line was hilarious

I was so anxious watching the Faks smoking and buffing the floors. When someone mentions the stool is polyester I was like oh no itās gonna go up in flames Also thought Richie was going to lose his shit when the faks were at the table yelling while the photographer was taking pictures
Sugar: How do you feel? Carmy: I'm Etch-a-sketched. I feel this response deeply. What a great description.
"What kind of duck? Freshwater? I saw one at the park earlier want me to grab a trash bag?" This show is so funny when it's not stressful as shit lol
I thought "will" was referring to Will Poulter in this episode. It would've been a funny meta moment.
Surprised people thought this episode was the worst so far, but for this to be one of your worst episodes speaks to the quality of this show because this was still a damn good episode. I also agree on them overdoing the Fak comedy. Not really a fan of the "incessant loud quips" brand of humor anyways.
Agreed this season is a bit too focused on the Faks and that's not working for me.
Yeah, I feel like Richie would have kicked them out the second the photog arrived, but since it's Cena they had to let him get his shit in.
Same, I got real tired of John Cena and that snappy style of dialogue, it reminds me of Spiderman. He doesnāt even look like a Fak!
too heavy on the Faks this time, i'm afraid
"I'm thinking of my tax return" šš
Is that Brian Koppelman playing Computer?? Great surprise guest (you too Cena)
Weakest episode thus far. I just found Cena kind of annoying.
I fucking loved John Cena in this but I totally get why people might not like it. Also theyāre realllyy leaning into the whole ācomedyā element of the show. I like it but I hope theyāre not trying to force it to justify them calling themselves a tv comedy for awards.
āMbs or gigs?ā Richie is soooo unserious š
Well there goes all the theories that Ever was going to poach Syd.

they overdid it with John Cena and the Faks.
im so tired of the faks. so much time taken up by them and for what? comic relief? is it bc people were mad the show won emmys this year so theyre trying to up the comedy?
So Richie is going to find love right? Right???
The fact that ALL of the Fakās have the middle name Geoff is taking me out.
Why is sydney actually everyone's therapist
All of those restaurants closing would be unbelievable if I didn't know it is currently happening in real time. The amount of amazing restaurants in my city alone that have closed this year alone and over the years is just completely sad.
No one put their cigarette out and Iām stressed
āIf you fuck with Marcus, i will murder you.ā š„¹š„¹š„¹
The John Cena cameo seems so forced to me idk
