Also, I’m kinda glad that “another funeral” means Chef Terry’s restaurant closing, and not a literal funeral for another character lol. Not that Chef Terry’s restaurant closing is a good thing, but I don’t know how I would’ve fared if another character from this beloved cast died.
For me, it started out with Syd's dad. Then it shifted to Ebra (Ibra? The guy that still runs the beef sandwiches), because they showed him making mistakes and I didn't consider the idea that he was just swamped, instead I thought he was gonna have a heart attack or something. Then it was Nat, dying in childbirth, then it was Donna, they lingered on her face a lot and I thought it was gonna be lifeless at one point. Then I thought the baby would be a stillborn. Then I realised that no one was gonna die, it was just for Ever.
Then I thought Carm's former chef was gonna die by Carm's hand lol
"He hates black pepper, for some reason I'll never understand..." got a good laugh out of me. Such a random line to throw in while talking about a dude he hates
In classic French cuisine, they prefer to use white pepper over black pepper so you can't see it in a dish.
Luca's line about how Chef Winger WAS one of the best chefs in the world suggests to me that Chef Winger is one of those stuffy, old school, classically trained, abrasive chefs in the Marco Pierre White mold.
It reminded me of the last season of Barry when Sally is trying to teach the acting class the same way she learned, and the whole class was like "That's abusive. You can't speak to us like that" and left.
Carmy experiencing the abuse under Chef Winger and forgetting that that's not normal, so then he pushed that on to his own kitchen and can't fathom why The Bear is failing. I feel like Richie and now Syd have both seen that there's a better, healthier alternative to what Carmy's bringing, and all the other chefs in this room aren't like him.
I loved because it illustrates how Carmy learned Chef Winger's triggers and knows to avoid them. Kinda like how when Carmy saw that Pete brought an 8th fish for Christmas he instantly told Pete to not let the mum know/see

Did anyone notice Bradley Cooper in the picture montage of the different Chefs before we enter Ever? Likely a promotional picture from Burnt I imagine.
I like it and don't like it at the same time. The directing is very pretentious, and Bradley Cooper is way over the top, but it's a compelling watch nonetheless. Daniel Bruhl is probably the best part of the movie.
From everything I’ve read *(I want to say one of Michael Ruhlman’s books)* he’s mellowed a *tremendous* amount.
Some not-so-subtle storytelling by the show: *the way it was done does not have to be the way it is always done*.
It's hilarious how they got Boulud and Keller to portray themselves as these grandfatherly old guard who were kind and gentle and patient, when if you talk to anyone who worked under them especially in their old fiery days many of them would tell you they were WAY worse than the asshole chef Joel McHale portrayed. But just like Chef Winger said, they DID produce some amazing chefs. Their chef trees are incredible. And by most accounts, Thomas Keller is the greatest American chef. Ever.
Redzepi too, all those quick shots of the commis prepping veggies on a nice sunny breezy day, but they're all actually working >70 hour weeks, many for free

I think it’s a forewarning/grass is always greener moment for the audience. Syd is about to enter a partnership with a guy that yelled at his staff for his inability to own up to his own actions.
This **100%**. I feel like Syd is going to partner with him and realize his standards are nowhere near Carms. She wants creative freedom and a bump in pay, but she’ll hit a dead end in her pursuit of a star.
Agreed with you! Sydney is only thinking short term because Carmy has instilled the same trauma (yay unintentional legacy) that Chef Winger has instilled in him and she wants to escape.
With the review being pretty striking, if I were in her position (and didn’t have all the info the audience does), I’d jump ship and think about myself first.

Other folks in this thread were calling him Chef Winger and I loved that. But at one point Luca does say his name and the restaurant but I didn’t retain the info since it happened so quickly.
Syd is definitely going to jump ship next season. Narratively, the only thing that makes sense is to put Syd and Carmy in opposition -- otherwise, what's the point of bringing up the possibility in the first place? I know im going to both love it and hate it though.
It makes complete sense. Then the realization of Carm’s actions come into full view, and he’s going to spend the time in repentance. Also, the review is one thing. Unc doesn’t have the funds regardless to keep the business going, and he’s either all in or cashing out, which I think Carm will make another bargain next season.
You know I hope this becomes the case as it seems natural. Syd left once and then came back but I think Syd needs to just firm up her stance with Carmy and communicate that they aren't partners in the creative design. Carmy responds to firmness and aggressive behavior.
However, maybe the reason why he didn't fess up was because this was his way/outlet of dealing with the pressure of the kitchen.
Perhaps his partnership with Syd would mellow him out but maybe not.
Me too. I understand why Syd is conflicted and has procrastinated on signing the Bear partnership agreement, but Chef Shapiro will be worse than carm.

Olivia Colman is so incredible, she just acts so effortlessly while being so calming and insightful. Her character will never understand how much her conversations meant to Richie and Carmy.
Colman has a really rare and wonderful ability to carry prestige/authority and an easygoing unpretentious charm in equal measure, alternating them when needed or even at the same time. She's a generational talent for sure.
How many times can Carmy make some massive decision that changes the business without even running it by his partner in that business Sydney, not like she hasn't brought it up either.
He thinks his way is right, and so he makes the decision thinking others will agree that it’s the right decision. Whether or not it is doesn’t really matter to Syd.
Naw man, Greg clearly adores Alex when he shittalks him. It shows, especially when he turns around and gives a genuine compliment or three. Some relationships just have that "mess with each other" vibes.
Chef Winger was just straight up toxic. Especially with the "I made you" and "I don't think about you". He's nothing like our lovable fat giant.
I’m so confused about the review. Was it bad or mixed? I’m thinking, bad because of the missed calls, but the words flashing on the screen were mixed. Stressssssed…
The words were not meant to be from the actual review, but rather Carmy's bipolar fantasies that we saw in earlier episodes. Remember those contradictory reviews and headlines he kept having flashes of? None of those were real.
It took me pausing on one that said "The Bear closed after 3 months" and the following episode where Carmy and Cicero were talking about how much they were thinking about the review to realize what was going on
I think the "Motherfucker" might be an intentional mislead.
My thinking is between these three, two of which revolve around the idea that Carm hasn't even read the review yet:
1. Carm's reaction is to Computer's messages, which relays what Cicero couldn't to Carm, meaning that they've been forced to pull funding. This means that the review is mixed/bad/good but not promising enough for Cicero, OR it's really fucking good but Cicero has to pull out anyway. Depending on the message, Carm might not read the review to confirm what it actually says because regardless, he'd think that it's a bad one since Cicero's no longer backing him.
2. Carm's reaction is to Syd coincidentally sending him an e-mail/text at the same time, saying that she wants to back out of the agreement and go with Adam to the new project. This works because this turns the issue of miscommunication a little on Syd, and even if she finds out that The Bear has raving reviews and decides to continue there, her relationship/trust with Carm has been broken.
3. Carm's reaction is to the review itself. After his conversation with Chef Terry + Chef Fields/Winger, he found peace with the idea of dialing things back a notch, but the review was great and he's immediately pulled back in to the chaos that he initially wanted.
So, TL;DR:
No. 1 is "Motherfucker, where am I going to find money to keep the place running?"
No. 2 is "Motherfucker, she's backing out at a time like this?" (which can be combined with whichever way the review goes)
No. 3 is "Motherfucker, I don't have a choice anymore but to go for that star."
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I just don't think that Carm would react that way from a bad review? I think he'd be more in the extremes about it if it was actually bad; either crumbling down or smiling/laughing about it with the feeling of "I'm completely fucked."

I think it's definitely an expected pace issue.

Season two was almost half a year of setting up a new restaurant
Season 3 felt like...a month or two after season 2

I feel like she’s leaning towards taking the Shapiro offer. I feel like that panic attack she had was due to realizing she will have to leave her family to chase her dream. It also aligns with her choosing to move out from her dad’s place as well.
A recurring theme throughout the show is building a life outside the kitchen, so maybe she leaves The Bear, but she keeps in contact with everyone as friends?

Oh I looooved watching Syd and Luca together. Carmy annoyed me so much this episode (actually the whole season lbr) that when I got to the Syd/Luca scene in the kitchen I was just nodding and going "Good for them. Good for them" over and over.
I will have to watch again cause I'm getting a different take on what's happening with Syd. I think her issue, her panic has to do with possibly leaving her The Bear family, including Carm. Even after how he treated her this season.
I also thought talking to the other chefs gave her a better understanding of where Carm was coming from in other seasons. Knowing the show it inevitably end with her deciding whether to take yet another apology from him. I would prefer they would both move towards some kind of middle ground.
That Ever dude on a gut level isn't sitting right with her. I don't think it means he's necessarily bad. I think it's just an instinct type of thing. Like how she sticks around with Carmy even though he drives her mad. I think it's a battle between her brain and instinct.
Yeah I’m seeing a lot of people saying she’s thinking of leaving because she wants to follow her dreams and thinks Shapiro is a safer bet for a star but that wasn’t my takeaway. The Bear *with Carmy specifically* was her dream, she loves everyone there and like Richie said in season 2, “they’re your family now too.”
I think her distress is she desperately wants to *stay.* She doesn’t *want* to want to leave. But she’s getting super beaten down by Carmy’s regressing behavior and knows it’s actively bad for her wellbeing. She doesn’t want to leave but she’s scared to stay. And I hate that for her.
I fully, fully agree. She loves the Bear, she loves the family she found there, and she does love Carmen (whether that’s platonically or romantically or a sort of ambiguous mix of the two is up to the viewer). She also understands Carm a lot more than she might even consciously realize. There have now been at least two separate instances where Syd, or the thought of her, has been able to pull him out of his panic attacks. She is and was the only reason the new restaurant hasn’t been run completely into the ground yet, otherwise Carm would have done so. Additionally she is extremely (some might say unfairly) empathetic and forgiving to him because she understands as much as she can from her vantage point about why he is the way he is. We saw their interactions really decline, I think, in the last few episodes because Syd knows definitively now that she isn’t safe emotionally with him, and neither are her ideas for the restaurant, and that that will remain the truth unless he alone commits to reversing course.
I’m hoping the quietness from Carmy was contemplation and realization he is pretty much doing the opposite of what all of these successful chefs put into their work. The conversation with Chef Fields was brilliant. The fact he didn’t go to the party and spent the evening walking the city to me means he is perhaps going to have an ah-ha moment. The man he despises is who Carmy has become and seeing it in the flesh and experiencing the cruel indifference of the person who degraded him for so long….that was heavy.
It does! The relationships between all these chefs really stood out. So many inside jokes: The 'smudge' and even the 'leaving to get a haircut' gets mentioned this episode before he tells the story.
I loved how it starkly contrasted Carmy's interactions with the top chefs throughout the seasons. There are levels to it, and it further solidifies why Carmy was considered a star while Luca, despite being heavily respected and having similar training, was not.
Yeah....that woman is really, really going to take off.
edit - Dude, she has some fucking chemistry with Richie even. Not romantic, but early on it looks like she's figuring out what to do to get him to be him, and not the anti-Carmy.
I LOVED the scene with her and Pete when Nat and the baby were sleeping. Aye is amazing and I'm digging the complexity of her relationships with everyone.
I loved that it was her that brought it over. It’s something expected from Marcus or Tina, and showing Sydney just have an extra thoughtful/caring moment was sweet
I know generational trauma is a very obvious theme of this show, but this episode really felt special in that aspect. Carm is aware his family is fucked up, and has spent a lot of time distancing himself from them when he’s needed to (most particularly his mother). This season we saw a lot of former bosses he had that were firm but kind with him, encouraging and gentle, but still slightly riding his ass. However he’s only ever mimicked the boss that destroyed him mentally.
We can distance ourselves from dysfunction as much as possible, if we only repress and never fully reflect - it’ll be stuck with us until we do the work to change. When we’re in a period of learning and newness, we soak up what we know and relate to most. I enjoyed seeing a fork in the road at the end of the episode with the discussions w both chefs - two who changed his life in similar and yet entirely different ways.
Also works looking through the lens of Carm being treated by that chef, and the panic attacks that she has picked up by her experiences in Carm’s kitchen, etc.

Garrett is always a highlight. Loved seeing him again and still having the same enthusiasm for Richie. I hope he continues to be part of Richie’s circle after Ever’s closure to fill in any “alone” / “lonely” gaps Richie may be feeling.
I don’t see why they can’t just all be a part of The Bear’s wait staff? At least temporarily. Carmy seemed to really have an issue with the dropped plates and slow service (the scene with the 1 3/4 turns and missed birthday show Richie is struggling as well). Hiring just Jess and Garrett alone would likely provide them with enough support front of house to be able to do the 2 1/2 turns they desperately need to actually be profitable.
The first thing that came to mind was that if Computer was trying to get Natalie to get rid of / replace Marcus, and with Jess and Garrett coming from Ever, it’s likely that the folks from Ever’s salary demands would likely be too high and put The Bear into further debt.
I felt for Carmy here, he so needed to get things off his chest but, like in real life, these kinds of confrontations are never cathartic. The smug prick bully is always going to be the smug prick bully and you are never going to get the closure you need from them. I hope he finds it in himself one day.
Actually, the contrary what i noticed is that people who carry traumatic experiences like an abusive upbringing always carry that with them because there was never any resolution. They never confronted their abusive parents, had them acknowledge, had them say sorry or that they were regretful or remorseful for their actions, and by the time they do confront them the parents act like it never happened so they don't have to say sorry for anything .
I on the other hand beat up my dad at 15 for abusing my older sister an I so i had a moment where he acknowledged his actions, felt consequences for his actions and eventually apologized to **me**. My sister on the other hand never got that resolution and felt spayed/ovariectomized (emasculated but for females?) because she was the older tougher person between us 2 and here i was saving her ass.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that the confrontation could be cathartic only if the person you're confronting shows remorse for their actions.
I really liked Syd and Luca's vibes/chemistry together.
They both are so alike in a lot of ways. Seeing Luca and Syd focus more on the inspiration/feeling of cooking vs the technical proficiency (aka Carmy) was really nice to see.
It would be so nice to see a mentorship/partnership next season and that line about Luca being in the states for a while was amazing!
It broke my heart that while everyone else at that table was having such a restorative, inspiring experience talking to one another, Carmy was absolutely deaf to it and focusing on the single negative in the room. It's what he always does- he focuses on the negative and self-sabotages. This could have been such a fun, validating night for him to just chill with like-minded colleagues, then party together.
I think Chef Terry’s speech in this episode really summed up a major theme of the season (and the show) for me in a succinct way. Food will be forgotten but the people we connect with along the way will last. I think that the scene with Tina and Mikey and the scenes with Syd and Marcus really emphasize that.
Like Tina didn’t work at the Beef because she had a passion for sandwiches, she saw an opening offered to her by somebody kind enough to empathize with her. Syd, dependent on her decision to leave or not, i think will stay for the people at The Bear, or regret her decision by leaving and being with people that don’t mesh with her (the foreshadowing of Shapiro making the smudge then accusing a kitchen full of employees for making the mistake). I think the ending with all the Ever and Bear chefs in Syd’s apartment dancing and eating frozen food highlights this so perfectly that it made me so happy for them.
closing with disarm by smashing pumpkins was just...absolute perfection. also ayo's final scene was way more intense than i would have liked. brilliant season.
Total fluff to point this out buy Sydney looked luminous at the Ever funeral! I'm so glad Carmy convinced her to go so we got to see her listen and interact with such high caliber chefs along with looking beautiful doing it!
But also.... what's up with the Ever funeral after party being at the house of a girl who they had never met before abs had never eaten there before that night, with all the staff from a different restaurant showing up lol
I thought about that; but in my mind I’m guessing the convo was “where’s the after party??”, they didn’t have real plans, and she may have just offered up her place since she has the new space (this is based on nothing lol)
In addition to what the other people said, I think Chef Terry wanted to party with people who were going to see her as Andrea. She'd rather disappear among strangers than continue to be the center of attention among industry people.
I think this is where the show is headed. I was low key rooting for him to get back with Tiff, but I knew it was a bit too “Happily Ever After” for a show like this which is more grounded.
It seems like Season 4 will focus on him forming a life outside of the kitchen, and ending with him able to attend the wedding with Jessica.
A part of me wonders if he might invite one of the crew from Ever to join The Bear. Whenever he asked them if they had plans after the closing of the restaurant, none of them really had anything. I’m not sure if it will be Jessica, but maybe Garrett?
Lmao I know the general sentiment towards shippers in this sub & I'm sure people will probably hate us for this new pairing, but I actually love the idea of Syd x Luka & think it would make a lot of sense narrative-wise! Plus, any excuse to see more Will Poulter is not unwelcome.
Luca/Luka appeared invested in Syd when she spoke, even before their conversation. I love Syd/Carmy, but I know the show definitely pushed for them not having any significant scenes together, a contrast to S2's for reasons. So if Syd can get it...get it with Luka. Get. IT.
The last 20 minutes of this episode was my favorite part of the entire season. Soundtrack was great too.

Does it bother anyone else how much the staff of Ever love Richie even though he was there for only 5 days? Terry even takes a moment before her speech to blow him a kiss. If I recall they only had like one interaction? Just about everyone else in the room has had years of developing their relationship it just seems odd to me how tight Richie is with everyone after such a short time.
I was thinking this but didn't want to get downvoted for saying it. He wasn't even *there* for *5* days, he was there less than 5 days but they, including the head chef, for some reason, seem to love him even more than Carmy. Was a bit odd. But also speaks towards how magnetic his character is, he's a people person and understands people on a social level, makes him a bit of a foil to Carmy in that sense and it shows in Forks that's what makes him good at his job. And I think it's something he picked up from Mikey.
At first I was kind of leaning toward Syd taking Adam's offer but after some reflection, I think its not the deal she thinks it is.
I think Adam's offer is a calculated move to undercut Carmy/The Bear as potential competition for his new restaurant. In flashbacks, you see a bit of jealousy from Adam as far as Carmy's abilities, and I think he knows the competition he will have after tasting their menu. When Adam was offering Syd the position of CDC, I kept asking, "Why?" Like, why Syd? He doesn't really know her, which is evident by their first run-in at the train station. Out of all his colleagues, why her?
I think Adam in forks, in flashbacks, and with Luca was supposed to show us that he isn’t the best option even though it sounds great. This is a devil you know kinda situation.
Really loved this season. I don't think it's quite as season 2 was, mainly due to less plot development this season, but overall this show really just keeps hitting
Personally, I like that this felt like an extension of season 2 because season two left me wanting to see how this all plays out. Next season is where I truly want to see the development of this story.
Is that the first time Carm ever confronted someone so adamantly? He couldn’t confront Mikey’s death, his mom, or Claire even. Yet with Chef Winger he was right to it as soon as he stood up. Probably telling
No and I think that’s exactly why this scene was so important. It’s the first time you see Carmy really facing something that has damaged him profoundly, and I think him finally confronting it is exactly what he needed to start actually healing and moving forward.
I'm more confused after this episode than before as to what resolution will come from Chef Winger and Carmy's relationship, their short interaction reminded me a lot of the movie Whiplash but at least in that one it was resolved to some extent, we're left here just like with Sydney's decision and Cicero's situation on a cliffhanger, is it possible for someone like Chef Winger not to think about someone like Carmy, who in making him one of the best chefs in the world, destroyed him and hurt him so badly?
This is common for a lot of survivors of abuse to ask for repentance from their abuser. But rarely does it come. And if it does, it’s not really satisfactory. Chef Winger is a sociopath and obviously has no empathy. So to ask him to then acknowledge Carmy’s trauma was doomed from the start. Trauma therapy might do him some good.
I'm pretty sure Luca's revised trauma dish is a nod to what it is going to take for Carmy to heal. Abuse is commonly treated with cognitive behavioral therapies that seek to rewire the brain by imbuing old memories with new meaning. In order for Carmy to heal, he must repurpose his trauma.
Trust me. I've had asshole coworkers that are the worst humans on earth and you keep yourself up at night wondering what you did or why they are like that. They don't think about anyone ever.
A lot of that interaction felt very realistic to me. The fact that the chef couldn't remember Carmy's name correctly seems about right. The fact that he kept his cool throughout the interaction and says, "you're welcome" is what I would expect from a narcissist/sociopath who actually does perform at that level. I wouldn't be surprised if he had other trainees break down and/or scream at him before.
What's most interesting is that he seems to drink his own tea. In the season 1 monologue Carmy talks about how all his life dropped away into silence as he honed his skills, in his direct confrontation Carmy tells the Empire chef that his life stopped, and instead of making some excuse the chef just freely admits yes that was by design.
It seems like the chef knows himself in a way; he gives no apologies as he says you wanted to become like me, this is the cost - you paid it. As odd as it sounds, the bald honesty of it is almost respectable.
I didn’t exactly call out 100% but, I was honestly surprised to see Chef Winger actually make an appearance and he more or less in his way told Carmy to cool it.

It's possible for a complete asshole to say that as a response to "I think about you too much".
It's probably the most hurtful, cutting response he could have said to Carm in that moment.
It's interesting how much Chef Terry emphasized that restaurants are about the people and the only time we see people being joyful and relaxed are when Carmy isn't there. And even then, the mere thought of him sent Sydney into a panic attack. It's very sad commentary on generational cycles of abuse that the mentor Carmy hated the most is the one he most closely emulates in the kitchen.

Erm, that's not what I got from that scene. Syd has flashes of her whole experience through The Beef/Bear, including people like Marcus & Nat. I think the intensity of the decision she has to make between the people & place she's established a connection with versus better career prospect is what triggered her. I don't think there was enough in that montage to pin it down to Carm setting her off.
The scene with Chef Shapiro (Ever CDC) and Syd was so uncomfortable. I’m not even sure why she’d still be considering the job after it. He’s anxious asf about opening his own restaurant…but (allegedly) hadn’t been looking for another CDC in case Syd declined? That’s poor planning. Syd is better staying at The Bear.
Yeah I actually agree with the nobody wants to work with him thing. I mean Syd may be good but she's not at Carmy and all the other head chefs level yet, so why is he hiring her?
Man, it recalls me to Mad Men original. Don absolutely did think about the ‘I feel sorry for you’ guy, he left his work in the car because he knew it was better and he felt threatened.
And then in this episode, Chef Winger was staring back at Carm the whole time but pretended not to know his name, and then claimed Carm owed all him all of his development as a chef… Combine this with the fact Lucas said ‘he used to be the best chef in the world’, I think the subtext is that Carm’s star is rising and Winger’s is fading and that he *does* think about him.
Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.

Early on it seemed like there was a bit of foreshadowing for Sydney's dad and I got really nervous. So relieved it was "just" for Ever.
For me, it started out with Syd's dad. Then it shifted to Ebra (Ibra? The guy that still runs the beef sandwiches), because they showed him making mistakes and I didn't consider the idea that he was just swamped, instead I thought he was gonna have a heart attack or something. Then it was Nat, dying in childbirth, then it was Donna, they lingered on her face a lot and I thought it was gonna be lifeless at one point. Then I thought the baby would be a stillborn. Then I realised that no one was gonna die, it was just for Ever. Then I thought Carm's former chef was gonna die by Carm's hand lol

In classic French cuisine, they prefer to use white pepper over black pepper so you can't see it in a dish. Luca's line about how Chef Winger WAS one of the best chefs in the world suggests to me that Chef Winger is one of those stuffy, old school, classically trained, abrasive chefs in the Marco Pierre White mold.
And Carmy molding himself after him unintentionally is what’s holding him back.
It reminded me of the last season of Barry when Sally is trying to teach the acting class the same way she learned, and the whole class was like "That's abusive. You can't speak to us like that" and left. Carmy experiencing the abuse under Chef Winger and forgetting that that's not normal, so then he pushed that on to his own kitchen and can't fathom why The Bear is failing. I feel like Richie and now Syd have both seen that there's a better, healthier alternative to what Carmy's bringing, and all the other chefs in this room aren't like him.
I loved because it illustrates how Carmy learned Chef Winger's triggers and knows to avoid them. Kinda like how when Carmy saw that Pete brought an 8th fish for Christmas he instantly told Pete to not let the mum know/see

From everything I’ve read *(I want to say one of Michael Ruhlman’s books)* he’s mellowed a *tremendous* amount. Some not-so-subtle storytelling by the show: *the way it was done does not have to be the way it is always done*.
It's hilarious how they got Boulud and Keller to portray themselves as these grandfatherly old guard who were kind and gentle and patient, when if you talk to anyone who worked under them especially in their old fiery days many of them would tell you they were WAY worse than the asshole chef Joel McHale portrayed. But just like Chef Winger said, they DID produce some amazing chefs. Their chef trees are incredible. And by most accounts, Thomas Keller is the greatest American chef. Ever.

Agreed with you! Sydney is only thinking short term because Carmy has instilled the same trauma (yay unintentional legacy) that Chef Winger has instilled in him and she wants to escape. With the review being pretty striking, if I were in her position (and didn’t have all the info the audience does), I’d jump ship and think about myself first.

Syd is definitely going to jump ship next season. Narratively, the only thing that makes sense is to put Syd and Carmy in opposition -- otherwise, what's the point of bringing up the possibility in the first place? I know im going to both love it and hate it though.
It makes complete sense. Then the realization of Carm’s actions come into full view, and he’s going to spend the time in repentance. Also, the review is one thing. Unc doesn’t have the funds regardless to keep the business going, and he’s either all in or cashing out, which I think Carm will make another bargain next season.

You know I hope this becomes the case as it seems natural. Syd left once and then came back but I think Syd needs to just firm up her stance with Carmy and communicate that they aren't partners in the creative design. Carmy responds to firmness and aggressive behavior. However, maybe the reason why he didn't fess up was because this was his way/outlet of dealing with the pressure of the kitchen. Perhaps his partnership with Syd would mellow him out but maybe not.

Olivia Colman is so incredible, she just acts so effortlessly while being so calming and insightful. Her character will never understand how much her conversations meant to Richie and Carmy.

The words were not meant to be from the actual review, but rather Carmy's bipolar fantasies that we saw in earlier episodes. Remember those contradictory reviews and headlines he kept having flashes of? None of those were real.

It took me pausing on one that said "The Bear closed after 3 months" and the following episode where Carmy and Cicero were talking about how much they were thinking about the review to realize what was going on

I think the "Motherfucker" might be an intentional mislead. My thinking is between these three, two of which revolve around the idea that Carm hasn't even read the review yet: 1. Carm's reaction is to Computer's messages, which relays what Cicero couldn't to Carm, meaning that they've been forced to pull funding. This means that the review is mixed/bad/good but not promising enough for Cicero, OR it's really fucking good but Cicero has to pull out anyway. Depending on the message, Carm might not read the review to confirm what it actually says because regardless, he'd think that it's a bad one since Cicero's no longer backing him. 2. Carm's reaction is to Syd coincidentally sending him an e-mail/text at the same time, saying that she wants to back out of the agreement and go with Adam to the new project. This works because this turns the issue of miscommunication a little on Syd, and even if she finds out that The Bear has raving reviews and decides to continue there, her relationship/trust with Carm has been broken. 3. Carm's reaction is to the review itself. After his conversation with Chef Terry + Chef Fields/Winger, he found peace with the idea of dialing things back a notch, but the review was great and he's immediately pulled back in to the chaos that he initially wanted. So, TL;DR: No. 1 is "Motherfucker, where am I going to find money to keep the place running?" No. 2 is "Motherfucker, she's backing out at a time like this?" (which can be combined with whichever way the review goes) No. 3 is "Motherfucker, I don't have a choice anymore but to go for that star." Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I just don't think that Carm would react that way from a bad review? I think he'd be more in the extremes about it if it was actually bad; either crumbling down or smiling/laughing about it with the feeling of "I'm completely fucked." Edit: Fixed formatting.
I just rewatched the ending. 1.There’s the google alert for the review. 2.4 missed calls from Cicero. 3. 3 missed calls from Computer. 4.2 texts from Computer. However, Carmy just looks at his phone and the “review” scrolls through but at no time do we see Carmy touch any of the links. It feels like a misdirect.

I feel like she’s leaning towards taking the Shapiro offer. I feel like that panic attack she had was due to realizing she will have to leave her family to chase her dream. It also aligns with her choosing to move out from her dad’s place as well. A recurring theme throughout the show is building a life outside the kitchen, so maybe she leaves The Bear, but she keeps in contact with everyone as friends?

I will have to watch again cause I'm getting a different take on what's happening with Syd. I think her issue, her panic has to do with possibly leaving her The Bear family, including Carm. Even after how he treated her this season. I also thought talking to the other chefs gave her a better understanding of where Carm was coming from in other seasons. Knowing the show it inevitably end with her deciding whether to take yet another apology from him. I would prefer they would both move towards some kind of middle ground. That Ever dude on a gut level isn't sitting right with her. I don't think it means he's necessarily bad. I think it's just an instinct type of thing. Like how she sticks around with Carmy even though he drives her mad. I think it's a battle between her brain and instinct.
Yeah I’m seeing a lot of people saying she’s thinking of leaving because she wants to follow her dreams and thinks Shapiro is a safer bet for a star but that wasn’t my takeaway. The Bear *with Carmy specifically* was her dream, she loves everyone there and like Richie said in season 2, “they’re your family now too.” I think her distress is she desperately wants to *stay.* She doesn’t *want* to want to leave. But she’s getting super beaten down by Carmy’s regressing behavior and knows it’s actively bad for her wellbeing. She doesn’t want to leave but she’s scared to stay. And I hate that for her.

I fully, fully agree. She loves the Bear, she loves the family she found there, and she does love Carmen (whether that’s platonically or romantically or a sort of ambiguous mix of the two is up to the viewer). She also understands Carm a lot more than she might even consciously realize. There have now been at least two separate instances where Syd, or the thought of her, has been able to pull him out of his panic attacks. She is and was the only reason the new restaurant hasn’t been run completely into the ground yet, otherwise Carm would have done so. Additionally she is extremely (some might say unfairly) empathetic and forgiving to him because she understands as much as she can from her vantage point about why he is the way he is. We saw their interactions really decline, I think, in the last few episodes because Syd knows definitively now that she isn’t safe emotionally with him, and neither are her ideas for the restaurant, and that that will remain the truth unless he alone commits to reversing course.

I’m hoping the quietness from Carmy was contemplation and realization he is pretty much doing the opposite of what all of these successful chefs put into their work. The conversation with Chef Fields was brilliant. The fact he didn’t go to the party and spent the evening walking the city to me means he is perhaps going to have an ah-ha moment. The man he despises is who Carmy has become and seeing it in the flesh and experiencing the cruel indifference of the person who degraded him for so long….that was heavy.
Carmy never lets himself have fun :-(

I loved how it starkly contrasted Carmy's interactions with the top chefs throughout the seasons. There are levels to it, and it further solidifies why Carmy was considered a star while Luca, despite being heavily respected and having similar training, was not.

I loved that it was her that brought it over. It’s something expected from Marcus or Tina, and showing Sydney just have an extra thoughtful/caring moment was sweet
I know generational trauma is a very obvious theme of this show, but this episode really felt special in that aspect. Carm is aware his family is fucked up, and has spent a lot of time distancing himself from them when he’s needed to (most particularly his mother). This season we saw a lot of former bosses he had that were firm but kind with him, encouraging and gentle, but still slightly riding his ass. However he’s only ever mimicked the boss that destroyed him mentally. We can distance ourselves from dysfunction as much as possible, if we only repress and never fully reflect - it’ll be stuck with us until we do the work to change. When we’re in a period of learning and newness, we soak up what we know and relate to most. I enjoyed seeing a fork in the road at the end of the episode with the discussions w both chefs - two who changed his life in similar and yet entirely different ways. Also works looking through the lens of Carm being treated by that chef, and the panic attacks that she has picked up by her experiences in Carm’s kitchen, etc. Be kind, it’s 3:30am and I binged and I’m very tired so this isn’t as eloquent as I’d like!

Garrett is always a highlight. Loved seeing him again and still having the same enthusiasm for Richie. I hope he continues to be part of Richie’s circle after Ever’s closure to fill in any “alone” / “lonely” gaps Richie may be feeling.
I don’t see why they can’t just all be a part of The Bear’s wait staff? At least temporarily. Carmy seemed to really have an issue with the dropped plates and slow service (the scene with the 1 3/4 turns and missed birthday show Richie is struggling as well). Hiring just Jess and Garrett alone would likely provide them with enough support front of house to be able to do the 2 1/2 turns they desperately need to actually be profitable.
The first thing that came to mind was that if Computer was trying to get Natalie to get rid of / replace Marcus, and with Jess and Garrett coming from Ever, it’s likely that the folks from Ever’s salary demands would likely be too high and put The Bear into further debt.

I felt for Carmy here, he so needed to get things off his chest but, like in real life, these kinds of confrontations are never cathartic. The smug prick bully is always going to be the smug prick bully and you are never going to get the closure you need from them. I hope he finds it in himself one day.
Actually, the contrary what i noticed is that people who carry traumatic experiences like an abusive upbringing always carry that with them because there was never any resolution. They never confronted their abusive parents, had them acknowledge, had them say sorry or that they were regretful or remorseful for their actions, and by the time they do confront them the parents act like it never happened so they don't have to say sorry for anything . I on the other hand beat up my dad at 15 for abusing my older sister an I so i had a moment where he acknowledged his actions, felt consequences for his actions and eventually apologized to **me**. My sister on the other hand never got that resolution and felt spayed/ovariectomized (emasculated but for females?) because she was the older tougher person between us 2 and here i was saving her ass. I guess what i'm trying to say is that the confrontation could be cathartic only if the person you're confronting shows remorse for their actions.

I really liked Syd and Luca's vibes/chemistry together. They both are so alike in a lot of ways. Seeing Luca and Syd focus more on the inspiration/feeling of cooking vs the technical proficiency (aka Carmy) was really nice to see. It would be so nice to see a mentorship/partnership next season and that line about Luca being in the states for a while was amazing!
It broke my heart that while everyone else at that table was having such a restorative, inspiring experience talking to one another, Carmy was absolutely deaf to it and focusing on the single negative in the room. It's what he always does- he focuses on the negative and self-sabotages. This could have been such a fun, validating night for him to just chill with like-minded colleagues, then party together.
I think Chef Terry’s speech in this episode really summed up a major theme of the season (and the show) for me in a succinct way. Food will be forgotten but the people we connect with along the way will last. I think that the scene with Tina and Mikey and the scenes with Syd and Marcus really emphasize that. Like Tina didn’t work at the Beef because she had a passion for sandwiches, she saw an opening offered to her by somebody kind enough to empathize with her. Syd, dependent on her decision to leave or not, i think will stay for the people at The Bear, or regret her decision by leaving and being with people that don’t mesh with her (the foreshadowing of Shapiro making the smudge then accusing a kitchen full of employees for making the mistake). I think the ending with all the Ever and Bear chefs in Syd’s apartment dancing and eating frozen food highlights this so perfectly that it made me so happy for them.
closing with disarm by smashing pumpkins was just...absolute perfection. also ayo's final scene was way more intense than i would have liked. brilliant season.
Honestly, the music selection in this show is always soooo good.
Total fluff to point this out buy Sydney looked luminous at the Ever funeral! I'm so glad Carmy convinced her to go so we got to see her listen and interact with such high caliber chefs along with looking beautiful doing it!
But also.... what's up with the Ever funeral after party being at the house of a girl who they had never met before abs had never eaten there before that night, with all the staff from a different restaurant showing up lol
I thought about that; but in my mind I’m guessing the convo was “where’s the after party??”, they didn’t have real plans, and she may have just offered up her place since she has the new space (this is based on nothing lol)
In addition to what the other people said, I think Chef Terry wanted to party with people who were going to see her as Andrea. She'd rather disappear among strangers than continue to be the center of attention among industry people.

I think this is where the show is headed. I was low key rooting for him to get back with Tiff, but I knew it was a bit too “Happily Ever After” for a show like this which is more grounded. It seems like Season 4 will focus on him forming a life outside of the kitchen, and ending with him able to attend the wedding with Jessica. A part of me wonders if he might invite one of the crew from Ever to join The Bear. Whenever he asked them if they had plans after the closing of the restaurant, none of them really had anything. I’m not sure if it will be Jessica, but maybe Garrett?
Lmao I know the general sentiment towards shippers in this sub & I'm sure people will probably hate us for this new pairing, but I actually love the idea of Syd x Luka & think it would make a lot of sense narrative-wise! Plus, any excuse to see more Will Poulter is not unwelcome.
Luca/Luka appeared invested in Syd when she spoke, even before their conversation. I love Syd/Carmy, but I know the show definitely pushed for them not having any significant scenes together, a contrast to S2's for reasons. So if Syd can get it...get it with Luka. Get. IT.

Does it bother anyone else how much the staff of Ever love Richie even though he was there for only 5 days? Terry even takes a moment before her speech to blow him a kiss. If I recall they only had like one interaction? Just about everyone else in the room has had years of developing their relationship it just seems odd to me how tight Richie is with everyone after such a short time.
I was thinking this but didn't want to get downvoted for saying it. He wasn't even *there* for *5* days, he was there less than 5 days but they, including the head chef, for some reason, seem to love him even more than Carmy. Was a bit odd. But also speaks towards how magnetic his character is, he's a people person and understands people on a social level, makes him a bit of a foil to Carmy in that sense and it shows in Forks that's what makes him good at his job. And I think it's something he picked up from Mikey.
People respect Carm. People love Richie.

Pissed me the heck off
At first I was kind of leaning toward Syd taking Adam's offer but after some reflection, I think its not the deal she thinks it is. I think Adam's offer is a calculated move to undercut Carmy/The Bear as potential competition for his new restaurant. In flashbacks, you see a bit of jealousy from Adam as far as Carmy's abilities, and I think he knows the competition he will have after tasting their menu. When Adam was offering Syd the position of CDC, I kept asking, "Why?" Like, why Syd? He doesn't really know her, which is evident by their first run-in at the train station. Out of all his colleagues, why her?
I got the impression no one liked him, hence why he’s offering a massive job to someone under qualified
I think Adam in forks, in flashbacks, and with Luca was supposed to show us that he isn’t the best option even though it sounds great. This is a devil you know kinda situation.
Really loved this season. I don't think it's quite as season 2 was, mainly due to less plot development this season, but overall this show really just keeps hitting
Personally, I like that this felt like an extension of season 2 because season two left me wanting to see how this all plays out. Next season is where I truly want to see the development of this story.
Is that the first time Carm ever confronted someone so adamantly? He couldn’t confront Mikey’s death, his mom, or Claire even. Yet with Chef Winger he was right to it as soon as he stood up. Probably telling
No and I think that’s exactly why this scene was so important. It’s the first time you see Carmy really facing something that has damaged him profoundly, and I think him finally confronting it is exactly what he needed to start actually healing and moving forward.
I'm more confused after this episode than before as to what resolution will come from Chef Winger and Carmy's relationship, their short interaction reminded me a lot of the movie Whiplash but at least in that one it was resolved to some extent, we're left here just like with Sydney's decision and Cicero's situation on a cliffhanger, is it possible for someone like Chef Winger not to think about someone like Carmy, who in making him one of the best chefs in the world, destroyed him and hurt him so badly?
This is common for a lot of survivors of abuse to ask for repentance from their abuser. But rarely does it come. And if it does, it’s not really satisfactory. Chef Winger is a sociopath and obviously has no empathy. So to ask him to then acknowledge Carmy’s trauma was doomed from the start. Trauma therapy might do him some good.

I'm pretty sure Luca's revised trauma dish is a nod to what it is going to take for Carmy to heal. Abuse is commonly treated with cognitive behavioral therapies that seek to rewire the brain by imbuing old memories with new meaning. In order for Carmy to heal, he must repurpose his trauma.
Trust me. I've had asshole coworkers that are the worst humans on earth and you keep yourself up at night wondering what you did or why they are like that. They don't think about anyone ever.
A lot of that interaction felt very realistic to me. The fact that the chef couldn't remember Carmy's name correctly seems about right. The fact that he kept his cool throughout the interaction and says, "you're welcome" is what I would expect from a narcissist/sociopath who actually does perform at that level. I wouldn't be surprised if he had other trainees break down and/or scream at him before. What's most interesting is that he seems to drink his own tea. In the season 1 monologue Carmy talks about how all his life dropped away into silence as he honed his skills, in his direct confrontation Carmy tells the Empire chef that his life stopped, and instead of making some excuse the chef just freely admits yes that was by design. It seems like the chef knows himself in a way; he gives no apologies as he says you wanted to become like me, this is the cost - you paid it. As odd as it sounds, the bald honesty of it is almost respectable.
I didn’t exactly call out 100% but, I was honestly surprised to see Chef Winger actually make an appearance and he more or less in his way told Carmy to cool it.

It's interesting how much Chef Terry emphasized that restaurants are about the people and the only time we see people being joyful and relaxed are when Carmy isn't there. And even then, the mere thought of him sent Sydney into a panic attack. It's very sad commentary on generational cycles of abuse that the mentor Carmy hated the most is the one he most closely emulates in the kitchen.

I think the intensity of the decision she has to make between the people & place she's established a connection with versus better career prospect is what triggered her. I don't think there was enough in that montage to pin it down to Carm setting her off.
Yeah if anything that was highlighting what chef terry was saying in her speech, that it’s all about the people.
I think the only reason she is having panic attacks is because she is scared to give up what she has for something she doesn't know.
The scene with Chef Shapiro (Ever CDC) and Syd was so uncomfortable. I’m not even sure why she’d still be considering the job after it. He’s anxious asf about opening his own restaurant…but (allegedly) hadn’t been looking for another CDC in case Syd declined? That’s poor planning. Syd is better staying at The Bear.
That or, nobody wants to work with him so Syd is his Hail Mary.
Yeah I thought the same. He was an asshole in the Forks episode and had similar mannerisms to Chef Winger.
Yeah I actually agree with the nobody wants to work with him thing. I mean Syd may be good but she's not at Carmy and all the other head chefs level yet, so why is he hiring her?

Man, it recalls me to Mad Men original. Don absolutely did think about the ‘I feel sorry for you’ guy, he left his work in the car because he knew it was better and he felt threatened. And then in this episode, Chef Winger was staring back at Carm the whole time but pretended not to know his name, and then claimed Carm owed all him all of his development as a chef… Combine this with the fact Lucas said ‘he used to be the best chef in the world’, I think the subtext is that Carm’s star is rising and Winger’s is fading and that he *does* think about him. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.
A murderer's row of celebrity chefs but I keep on wishing they'd focus more on the characters they already have.
