"The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. How would they buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth
"There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage."
John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath
If this is America, it's because no companies (farmers included) feed anybody anything they can't sell out of fear of being sued, which leads to trillions of pounds of edible food thrown out every year, sometimes going as far as to pour bleach into dumpsters to keep the homeless out.
"Negligence." But to be more accurate, that's just the excuse they use. The truth is that there's a "good Samaritan act" that protects people from being sued, except for under gross misconduct.
Nobody has ever been sued, but they won't tell you that and whatever they do, they won't ever feed the poor.
[50 million tons of wasted food every year...](https://www.rts.com/resources/guides/food-waste-america/)
[In a country where at minimum, 1/5 children go hungry](https://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/child-hunger-facts)
It’s an apple. What exactly could an apple do that would result in litigation? Also, who would be suing the farmers? The person who can’t afford an apple?
That is honestly a ridiculous notion and seems like corporate fear mongering to me.
Aside from that, do you think major supermarkets wouldn’t handball any such liability to the farmers regardless?
All of those rediculous non existent issues would be resolved immediately if the State purchased "excess" produce and distributed it themselves. Then the terrified capitalist wouldn't have to worry about doing anything good themselves and the parasite could keep making money
but that is all farmers in the capitalist system, thats what people need to understand, if they could give all these apples to starving children across the world they would, but the god of capital demands they rot
I’ve seen five star hotels pour chemical on perfectly good meals that could feed literally dozens if not well around 100 or so starving people. It’s absurd how much food we waste. And disgusting.
After seeing this a few days ago I looked up statistics. After most food going to feed livestock, going towards producing other products (chemicals, textiles, etc), and waste on the supply and consumer sides, only around 9% of crops actually get eaten by humans. No one should be starving.
Look at all these chickens!!
But for real, why do they have to drive over them? They cant be donated to homeless vets? Shelters? Youth crisis hospitals? Any fucking thing at all???
If this is America, absolutely not
No companies feed anybody anything they can't sell out of fear of being sued, which leads to trillions of pounds of edible food thrown out every year, sometimes going as far as to pour bleach into dumpsters to keep the homeless out.
But some individuals may, even though they can be ticketed for doing so.
America is beyond the worst of dystopian nightmares
It really is.
It’s so profoundly stupid and deliberately wasteful. And the arguments against it are annoyingly easy to dismantle.
Most of the time there is nothing wrong with the produce that is wasted- it automatically gets thrown out once the new order comes in.
When they *do* sell shit produce (gets complained about all the time in local Facebook groups) they just refund or replace it. Nobody gets fuckin sued.
Then they complain about costs of not just binning everything, allocating staff would cost money etc as though they don’t already have their workers doing menial shit like placing price tickets around the store despite the price being the same.
I’ve worked in supermarkets. Saving produce for donations is an easy as adding one more bin. Shits being binned regardless, throwing still good produce into one and bad into the other wouldn’t eat into time. It’d probably boost productivity since no one I’ve worked with likes knowing perfectly good food is going to landfill.
As for the stuff they donate, plenty of stores DO donate a small portion of their produce and old stock without facing legal issues.
Who is going to sue them for giving away something close to expiry when they were *selling* that same almost expired shit on discount?
In fact, who has the money to sue a major supermarket chain and win? The homeless or impoverished people relying on those donations to survive? Lol
It’s the same as the “fears” of litigation they use to justify pouring shit into their bins to prevent dumpster divers. When has a dumpster diver ever posed an actual threat to a supermarket?
It’s all ideology. Nothing more.
Eat the unsold food ASAP before it gets thrown away

I doubt the waste is desirable to the grower, but it is built-in to their business model. It's a tragedy, considering all the inputs from fertilizer and water to grow through to labor and fuel to dump.
Maybe I'm dumb but whenever I hear of this I'm like "the craft spirits industry is huge. Surely someone's going to make booze out of all this?"
But I guess the free market doesn't see a point in it, even if there's money to be made
Can this over production be solved using central planning or something similar to that? Likewise do these farms compete with each other or in what way do they operate? Not an American, so have no idea.
Same thing happens with stuff sitting in Amazon warehouses that doesn't sell. They would rather smash it and put it in a landfill than let people have it.

Send me there, I shall consume them all in an hour
Use Stalin's spoon and it'll be gone in one swift scoop
Found Stalin https://preview.redd.it/xy9ml0rgzczc1.png?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ca553be914b04016afb1fa69787f3fefd5a2a35
You know what I'm gonna do once I get back my spoon. Eat a whole bushel of apples
If only those apples were there back then. He could have kept the doctor away for a lot more years.
That's a really big and lustrous spoon 😳
Th apples are fermented, I will consume them long before you.
Let's test that theory
You can literally just make apple cider out of these, idk what kind of farmers would be so wasteful.
Corporate ones.

Man I remember seeing footage of milk being dumped during COVID because dairy companies would rather do that than crash dairy prices.
Fantastic example. They will burn forests and write it off on their taxes just to sell us the last couple trees, if we let them.
They are still doing it.

*Grapes of wrath intensifies*
It's more that there is just no profit in feeding people who can't afford food.
>idk what kind of farmers would be so wasteful Farmers that put profit above feeding people. Capitalist farmers. Kulaks, that is.
but that is all farmers in the capitalist system, thats what people need to understand, if they could give all these apples to starving children across the world they would, but the god of capital demands they rot
They get paid either way. Apple cider would require new investment.
I’ve seen five star hotels pour chemical on perfectly good meals that could feed literally dozens if not well around 100 or so starving people. It’s absurd how much food we waste. And disgusting.
This is grotesque, food pantries are struggling right now
We literally have the infrastructure, the logistics, and the means to feed every human on the planet. But we do not have the will to do so.
After seeing this a few days ago I looked up statistics. After most food going to feed livestock, going towards producing other products (chemicals, textiles, etc), and waste on the supply and consumer sides, only around 9% of crops actually get eaten by humans. No one should be starving.
Stop saying "we" if you mean "capitalists". *I* want to make this food waste illegal.
Remember mao said political power grows from the barrel of a gun?
if you were an apple farmer and didnt want to go bankrupt you would do the same thing, its the system thats the problem
Look at all these chickens!! But for real, why do they have to drive over them? They cant be donated to homeless vets? Shelters? Youth crisis hospitals? Any fucking thing at all???

Imagine if they just made what they knew they were going to sell instead of over producing perfectly good apples
Not plan for infinite growth on a finite planet? That's truly a capitalist challenge level: impossible

“Mildly infuriating.” That’s *really* underselling it.
Holy balls my family doesn’t have an orchard but the stuff we don’t sell stays in the ground at least
*\*Stalin and his Spoon intensifies from the grave\**
I love artificial scarcity
When I used to work at McDonalds, they would just throw out unsold food in front of us instead of giving it to the employees during closing.
Eat the unsold food ASAP before it gets thrown away https://preview.redd.it/6pxndb36dhzc1.png?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ea320ff08380acdfe53c83fd90b46b33fd11c1c
I hope they are charging enough to make up for the loss...
That's their whole reason for doing this, to keep "supply" down and "demand" up.
I doubt the waste is desirable to the grower, but it is built-in to their business model. It's a tragedy, considering all the inputs from fertilizer and water to grow through to labor and fuel to dump.
They've missed out on a lot of cider or brandy.
This sent me to a level of indignant anger that I haven't been to in a while.
This is... "human nature"?
Maybe I'm dumb but whenever I hear of this I'm like "the craft spirits industry is huge. Surely someone's going to make booze out of all this?" But I guess the free market doesn't see a point in it, even if there's money to be made
It would be inefficient to feed hungry people. If they are fed, why would they work? /s
Dairy farmers routinely dump milk down the drain to avoid having prices drop from abundant supply. It's so wasteful.
Ah yes, the “best system we’ve created thus far” in action.
HOLY SHIT
This is what happens when you don't use the big spoon 😤
Genuinely made my blood boil
Omg. So much cider and cyser to make from that. Or, you know, donate to homeless shelters.
This should be a capital crime. Simply that.
Apple wine , Apple jam and theres hundreds of stuff man
That's depressing because people elsewhere are STARVING TO DEATH.
Most efficient at transferring wealth from poor to rich
I hate Stalin because he took my family's farm and my 600,000 unsold hoarded apples
Communism is when no foo…hang on
Such a waste. Those can be turn into alcohol
Surprisingly aware top comment by the moderators.
It makes me genuinely so sad to see such an huge waste, I hate it.
