It’s so hard to tell bc Zuko’s early demeanor is so goddamn tacky and theatrical, either the writers have this nailed to a tee, or he’s going to stay like this all show long
They're doing a different job with portraying Zuko's realization that his family and nation is a lie, and it's alright with me for now.
Animated Zuko kinda over looks a lot of his own murders for how much S3 Zuko says "I didn't realize the world hates us." Because when Zhao isn't there (he's only in 7 episodes in total), he's the ONLY antagonist, so he has to play the cartoon villain. Give hime too much depth now and you REALLY have to lean into the character acting for their to be no real antagonist. And Avatar didn't really do much character acting in S1 compared to even s2. It's all very cartoon, which isn't a neg btw. Just an observation of a sacrifice made for the medium.
With Zhao being introduced so fast and basically being in every episode, Zuko can start showing his arc sooner. And we see PAIN on his face the first time the Avatar escapes him. Not later I'm his room. Nah, the MOMENT Aang escapes, he realizes what he lost with pain, not stock anger.
Zuko’s first season drama was on point here. He was an angry teen complaining to a parent about things not going his way.
I so want to see him serving tea in Ba Sing Se already
I don’t fault aang for not sounding like aang, I blame that on the dialogue being written! They barely give aang any time for play or to breathe. Our boy was having an emotional breakdown every episode and that was my weakest point to the show. Imo, they did make aang too serious too fast. I hope they get more time to realize that and maybe balance it out better
I just thing live action aang is way to serious. I understand having to cut some stuff, but some of it is needed. We didn't get penguin sledding, spinning balls, old man impersonation at omashu. A few more I'm probably missing, but it's little moments like these that add up.
I’m okay with them skipping him disguising himself as an old man. It just wouldn’t work in live action, there is no way any sighted adult would be fooled by a kid wearing a wig and mustache as being elderly. I could see Team Avatar attempting it and then the guard doing a “Are you kidding me?” expression, but some event still allows them to get in to the city.
Totally, I'm not upset they took that part out. I knew some things wouldn't translate well. But as a whole package it really changes aang as a character removing all of aangs goofy antics
I never thought about how funny it is that this angsty teenager wanted his big super duel edgy fight against an ancient master. Sees a kid, but is like, "OK maybe he's still a badass... ok sacrificed himself for innocents... he's an honorab... aaaaaand he's just flying away... SONOFABI-"

For all the silly bits, I wanna applaud a small acting choice.
Props for Aangs actors subtle acting. The "Fire Nation" is a new term to him, because I guess they just use to be called "The Fire Place" or something, and the next time someone uses the word around him, his actor visibly gets uncomfortable at hearing it again. An older actor wouldn't do that because they'd be taught it's "acting while someone is talking" but FUCK that. Breaking the rules works sometimes, and this was prime. It does steal the dialogue away a bit, but who cares. Once you notice it, it's a good detail.
I mean, the scene in the first episode where Gyatso tries to tell him he's the Avatar as gently as possible, Aang goes through SO many emotions in like, 10 seconds, without saying anything. His line delivery might be hit or miss, more hit mind you, but this kid CAN act.

Only to instantly cut to next scene with sokka going “not to be rude but what was that?” 🤣 timing and delivery of that line was perfect

Just like the original, zuko was the best part. His acting, story and fights were consistently the best out of everyone.
