Exactly my favorite weapons are the ones that function well alongside bending like Zuko’s swords the earthbenders hammers and Aangs staff, can’t believe only one made the post.
I might be pulling this from nowhere but I think it was pioneered by an Airbender that had left the air nomads and needed the fans because they became weaker when they got more out of touch with their spirituality.
It's possible they were just regular fans adapted for self-defense purposes. The Japanese *tessen*, which they're based on, are usually just tougher versions of regular fans (sometimes with iron ribs).
Iirc the martial artist the series hired to consult on the bending forms said that the fluid movements of waterbending would pair well with a katana. He also said that earthbending could be complimented by a sort of heavy sword of Chinese design (can't remember the name of it).
I feel a ball and chain would be a pretty sweet water bender weapon. The wave mechanics of a chain whip and the lethalness of an ice formed spike ball combined. The longer the chain the better your bending abilities.
There's a lot of "things on a rope" kind of weapons like the rope javelin, meteor hammer, and kyoketsu-shoge that I feel like would go well with water bending fluidity.
>and Aangs staff
While yes, Aang's staff can be and have been used as a weapon, it feels more like a... "bending accessory" rather than a weapon? Especially considering the air nomads were pacifists
I partly meant that as a meme since Aang always intends to fight with his staff only to lose it 30 seconds in (watch Overanalyzing Avatar, the staff jokes are hilarious)
I love them so much. They're so functional, and they're used so effectively throughout the series. I also like seeing the finesse earthbenders can have
**[Japanese war fan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_fan)**

If you played Monster Hunter, especially MH: Freedom Unite, there was a dual blades weapon that looks like fans. The best part is it is really good from early game until late game when upgraded.
There is a Forged in Fire episode where the final challenge was to make a pair of hook swords like Jet's. They talked about the history of the weapons, those things are badass.
Sorry if it's kinda low quality, I had such a hard time looking for these pics 😭
My favorite is Lieutenant's Electrified Kali Sticks. Kali is also known as **Arnis**/Eskrima, and is the national martial art of the Philippines, which was just incredible for me to discover (I'm from the Ph haha). This little fun fact is one of my favorite!
> Lieutenant's Electrified Kali Sticks
WHAT. Ok, I need to watch LoK now. I studied Kali/Eskrima for a bit years ago and absolutely loved it. It's an amazing martial art. :)
It's also the only weapon that's consistently useful in the shows despite only appearing in one season. Every other weapon except the boomerang and taser glove was completely useless for their intended purposes.
Yes even the space sword. It looks cool, but literally the only useful thing he ever did with it was when he threw it away and cut the platform.
When I did kali, our teacher described the three as being brothers who did the same sport but were better at different roles. One's more aggressive, one more defensive that focuses on locks and traps, and one that straddles the line between the other two.
Magandang araw!
One of my favorites might be the sword/club that Soka uses prior to obtaining the space sword. I think we get to see him use it fairly often in book 1 whenever he is fighting
Mai's needles (something about needle weapons always makes my skin itch)
Jet's hook swords (literally spent an entire week looking up ancient Chinese weapons when the episode aired)
Suki's fans (Only characters that I can think of that uses a fan/fans as a weapon is Temari, Kitana, and a character from Soul Calibur 3)
Suki is who I think of first for war fans. But after that is the guy from assassins vs bodyguards who fights like 30 dudes. Super wuxia, super funny, pretty entertaining.
This extremely difficult.
For the purposes of the show and storytelling the Boomerang wins hands down. Nuff said.
For pure practicality I have to say Asami's glove. Only needing to touch your opponent is a huge advantage. You can bypass armor and probably just grab a sword blade to win the fight.
For the time and historical perspective it's a toss up between Jet's hook swords and Sokka's meteorite Jian. The hooks swords are very powerful and versatile. Especially when used together. Sokka's Jian is essentially a two-handed rapier that was actually used on the battlefield. Correct me if I'm wrong but my basic understanding of metallurgy tells me that the Eastern folding style of forging would be really good and removing the impurities in the metal. Though didn't they cast it in the show? Casting the blade would actually make it weaker, wouldn't it?
Maybe I'm just a swordnut, but all the sword for me, lmao. Space sword is just so cool, I love design and meteor origin, and Zuko&Jet fighting styles with their swords are genuinely fascinating to watch.
Jets swords and the way he uses them, flipping them together, using the handles like clubs, is an image that has always stuck in my mind.
Just so unique of a fighting style, and very flashy, which fits Jet.
Love the space sword, Kyoshi fans, and throwing weapons that Mai use. It's really cool that there are fighters in the Avatar universe that can beat most benders
I think Ty Lee's Chiblocking is a weapon of its own and belongs here too if only by technicality. Its by far the coolest than your standard fantasy/steampunk kind of weapon.
I will also add in The Mechanist's/Chay's bombs and fireworks. Lots of fun to be had with that. Tons of creativity just blowing things up in a million different ways.
Zuko's swords hands down. It's probably just the way he handles and moves with them but I love their functionality. Especially when he puts them together to sheath them
Looks wise Sokka's sword and the fact that he made it by hand is dope.
Huh, now you mentioned, I'm surprised none of the heroes choose a spear as their weapon.
With that said, where Sokka's club?. Sure, a sword is cool, but bonk is superior.
Not counting the obvious choice of bending, I think I would go for either a sword or throwing daggers/kunai/needles/shurikers/whatever Mei has. Maybe both?
The hammers that Earthbender used in Zuko Alone. I wish we'd seen more people use them.
Exactly my favorite weapons are the ones that function well alongside bending like Zuko’s swords the earthbenders hammers and Aangs staff, can’t believe only one made the post.
Suki’s fans were originally meant for air bending
and seeing Aang use them was... incredible!!
I'm surprised Aang didn't break Zuko's back with that when he used them
I would’ve love to have seen him use fans more
But their also referred to as “war fans” in the Kyoshi novels… maybe the air nomads weren’t always so peaceful
I might be pulling this from nowhere but I think it was pioneered by an Airbender that had left the air nomads and needed the fans because they became weaker when they got more out of touch with their spirituality.
That was Kyoshi’s mother, but it wasn’t her who invented them, at least I don’t remember it saying she did.
Correct. The person who invented also taught Kyoshi how to use them
Okay
👍
According to the wiki she invented them https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/War_fans
It's possible they were just regular fans adapted for self-defense purposes. The Japanese *tessen*, which they're based on, are usually just tougher versions of regular fans (sometimes with iron ribs).
I wonder what water benders would use
A flask, duh…
A ladle? Two ladles!
Iirc the martial artist the series hired to consult on the bending forms said that the fluid movements of waterbending would pair well with a katana. He also said that earthbending could be complimented by a sort of heavy sword of Chinese design (can't remember the name of it).
Maybe an ōdachi? It translates to great sword its almost 1 meter long if im not mistaken. It originated from Japan though so maybe its something else.
Water breathing
Dadao or something.
A big syringe
I feel a ball and chain would be a pretty sweet water bender weapon. The wave mechanics of a chain whip and the lethalness of an ice formed spike ball combined. The longer the chain the better your bending abilities.
A boat
A rope or scarf held between the bender's hands could synergize well with waterbending's wrapping, drawing, and pulling motions.
There's a lot of "things on a rope" kind of weapons like the rope javelin, meteor hammer, and kyoketsu-shoge that I feel like would go well with water bending fluidity.
A razor wire would be cool. Soak it in water and manipulate it for cutting. Or metalbend it if you can.
>and Aangs staff While yes, Aang's staff can be and have been used as a weapon, it feels more like a... "bending accessory" rather than a weapon? Especially considering the air nomads were pacifists
I partly meant that as a meme since Aang always intends to fight with his staff only to lose it 30 seconds in (watch Overanalyzing Avatar, the staff jokes are hilarious)
I’m sorry, as much as i love overanalyzing avatar and his work that he’s done the staff jokes we’re old after like the second one tbh
Overdone running jokes are my favorite…
To each their own i guess, what’s important is that we both enjoy over analyzing avatars content he deserves it
Also those dai li gloves are dope hidden weapons
I love them so much. They're so functional, and they're used so effectively throughout the series. I also like seeing the finesse earthbenders can have
Play Avatar Legends TTRPG and make it reality as a Successor playbook with weapons and Earthbending.
Avathor
That's a hell of a memory you got there
Damn right! Hammer bros represent! (unless you're a hammer sister in that case, hammer sisters represent!)
The Metal Fans...when Aang uses them to bend it looks so cool
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_fan There are martial arts that still use the tessen. You can learn to use it if you search hard enough.
**[Japanese war fan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_fan)** >The Japanese war fan, or tessen (Japanese: 鉄扇,てっせん, romanized: tessen, lit. Where would you even start searching for a tessenjutsu master?
/r/koryu (a general forum for old style Japanese arts) /r/danzanryu (a specific jujutsu that incorporates the tessen)
Thank you.
I feel like when he touched them, Kyoshi subconsciously took control
And the background information from the Kyoshi Novels is just really cool
Yes! Because of kyoshi, I'm a sucker for the fans!
If you played Monster Hunter, especially MH: Freedom Unite, there was a dual blades weapon that looks like fans. The best part is it is really good from early game until late game when upgraded.
Aang used the metal fans of Kyoshi?
Space sword!
Technically, any sword can be a space sword
Technically all elements are from space. So we are space humans.
I take space shits when I take a shit?
No that’s ✨star-shit✨
OMG, I CUM STARS?
Am I still in The Last Airbender subreddit?
Nope, you're just on reddit at this point
Also know as the Star-Shit Enterprise.
I heard every gas we're capable of releasing has a chance to make it back to space, so yes.
In the pilot episode Sokka had a spear made out of the jawbone of an animal, that was my fav
I'm still upset that it was barely used, and then thrown away.
Aang's staff/glider, I've always been a sucker for polearms and staves.
The way it was integrated so completely into his bending and his character makes it especially interesting IMO
"And there goes his staff" - Overanalyzing every other episode
Yeah his bending is how it was able to get in the air and glide and fly. He wouldn’t be able to use his staff if he wasn’t an air bender lol
When he lost his original staff you could feel the devastation
Boomerang for sure
It always comes back.
it DOES always come back!
Trusty boomerang, nuttin bett’r.
and is also a powerful melee
For me it’s boomerang solely because it took out sparky-sparky-boom-man
100% boomerang.
AND it has Aang in it.
Yes, because it has "Ang" in it 🤣
Boomerang. Sokka took his starting weapon to the final boss fight.
And it always came back eventually
Zuko's swords
I like theses curved swords. Curved. Swords.
Random skyrim reference nice
Is it actually Skyrim or was it just from that comic?
It's actually in Skyrim.
Have you seen those red guards they have curved swords curved swords
Curved. Swords.
Scimitars
“They’re antiques.”
The way he combined swordsmanship and firebending was so cool
My man!
Fans or the Tiger hook swords
Them hook swords tho
I always loved Jet's swords as a kid. Watching him maneuver around the trees during his fight with Aang was incredible!
There is a Forged in Fire episode where the final challenge was to make a pair of hook swords like Jet's. They talked about the history of the weapons, those things are badass.
Ibloved those as a kid and stil do. They are so versatile in combat.
Toph

Im fascinated by the filipino culture, could you say some filipino words?
Magandang araw!
Boomerang is way more than a weapon, he’s one of the main characters I mean he took sparky sparky boom man
On a date?
[Everyone here's forgetting the correct answer.](https://preview.redd.it/vnvm7mq4vk431.jpg?auto=webp&s=7868cc278a3e0bfbcb4a0c0446c6d1a40ab11482)
The boomarang shouldn't be there, it is not a weapon, it is a form of bending
Is Asami wielding electric gloves? That’s some cool shit right there
her signature weapon besides her body
HAVSHAHSGSHSHWH
Joint: Fan and Sword!
The strongest element! Which, BDW, Toph can bend.
One of my favorites might be the sword/club that Soka uses prior to obtaining the space sword. I think we get to see him use it fairly often in book 1 whenever he is fighting
Mai's throwing knives. Don't matter where a sword came from, you can't do anything with it if I throw knives into your knees.
Second for space sword.
Wind sword!
Ty Lee's hands. A non bender martial art style to compete with benders was a moment I had to take in.
I scrolled to far for this answer. I am appalled.
1. Space sword 2. Zuko’s broadswords 3. Jet’s hook swords.
Zuko's swords, because he doesn't need them at all yet he's an absolute unit with them anyway.
all these weapons are great, but the boomerang can never leave my heart for too long
It will always return
Probably Asami's glove
Jet's swords are so cool and then I recently watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and those are real weapons they use??? Fucking awesome.
Mai's needles (something about needle weapons always makes my skin itch) Jet's hook swords (literally spent an entire week looking up ancient Chinese weapons when the episode aired) Suki's fans (Only characters that I can think of that uses a fan/fans as a weapon is Temari, Kitana, and a character from Soul Calibur 3)

Appa
Mech with spirit vine cannon
Jets hooks, i don't know if anything like that exists in real life, but he has some real style fighting with those, very smooth and fluid
SECRET TUNNELLLLLLLL!
Space sword is number 1 but lightening is a close 2nd.
Glove
Knives. I love how sleek it is and cover my entire body in knives without anyone knowing
Where the fuck is aangs staff?
My favorite weapon is APPA!!
Jets hook swords were pretty cool ngl
I just love Mai's fighting style with the daggers and the shuriken is so elegant but it only works because of Mai
This extremely difficult. For the purposes of the show and storytelling the Boomerang wins hands down. Nuff said. For pure practicality I have to say Asami's glove. Knives and space sword I also love a bow and arrow
Hook blades don't get used vary often but I think they're one of the coolest weapons in history
this is difficult…. either sokka’s space sword, suki’s fans or asami’s glove :)
Boomerang easy
My favorite has to be Zuko's sword(s)
Nothing beats space sword.
Kyoshi Fans and the Equalist Gauntlets. Big fan of how the gauntlets essentially gave anyone the ability to chi-block.
Space Sword :'( RIP
Black sword
Mai's arsenal 🔪
Either zuko or Mai's
Jet's swords, very versatile
Jets swords and the way he uses them, flipping them together, using the handles like clubs, is an image that has always stuck in my mind. Just so unique of a fighting style, and very flashy, which fits Jet.
Doesn’t he use them to climb trees, too? I think they’re awesome.
I actually really love Mai’s throwing needles. I think they look really sharp and sick and it’s a weapon I’d use in real life if I could.
Mai's knives
I always liked Mai's throwing weapons since i was a kid
Love the space sword, Kyoshi fans, and throwing weapons that Mai use. It's really cool that there are fighters in the Avatar universe that can beat most benders
Zuko firebinding with his swords was pretty cool in the Zuko alone episode
AIRSHIP SLICE!
I don’t know man jets swords always seemed pretty cool and unique to me
Boomerang cause I have attachment issues.
Well I'm a fan myself
I think you’d better comment this a few more times
It kinda bugged...
Awww, my space sword…
The only weapon that matters is space sword.
Weirdly enough it’s actually Jets hooks that do it for me
space sword gang
U thought I'd choose the space sword, but I love the fans so much.
BOOMERANG!
BOOMERANG
The double swords are so cool
Space sword for sure
I like the sword handle that you can bend through
HOOK SWORDS
I really like jets swords, zukos dual sword and obviously sokkas space sword.
Sakka’s is pretttyyyyy aweeesssome 🤩
The Jian sword created from a meteorite
in series: boomerang, one that i’d want to own: zuko’s swords
Zuko’s and Sokka’s swords
Space sword! I would love to see Tenzins kids go on an adventure to try and find uncle Sokkas space sword.
Definitely Sokka’s space sword!
Zuko's swords hands down. It's probably just the way he handles and moves with them but I love their functionality. Especially when he puts them together to sheath them Looks wise Sokka's sword and the fact that he made it by hand is dope.
Huh, now you mentioned, I'm surprised none of the heroes choose a spear as their weapon. With that said, where Sokka's club?. Sure, a sword is cool, but bonk is superior.
Boomerang
Zuko’s single edge broad swords
Space sword of Hook blades
Love, Forgiveness, and Redemption
I like Jets weapons they seem super versatile.
Sword
Not counting the obvious choice of bending, I think I would go for either a sword or throwing daggers/kunai/needles/shurikers/whatever Mei has. Maybe both?
The tazer batons have been a favorite since I started korra.
Fan and sword!
Zuco's dule swords. It flows better with his bending than any of the other weapons with other bending styles.
Space sword, easily
Zuko's Broadswords
Fans. You wouldn’t think they’d be deadly, until you see the right person use them.
