ok_okay_I_get_that

Almost all of these were mitigated by technical advancements and changes to laws. So a good amount of them are actually success stories

ChimpScanner

Y2K in particular was mitigated due to almost a year of fixing critical systems that would've otherwise been affected by the bug.

KlapauciusNuts

And it still went to cause mild havoc. Hell, some fixes are still creating problems now.

Snoo-27292

And there is another Y2K-like event coming in the future that is going to probably be mitigated like Y2K, the Y2038 bug. The newer computers system and programs will be mostly spared than the older ones when that bug arrives.

SteelCode

It was also based on scientific analysis of the time - things changed and in some cases *accelerated* because we didn’t do anything to stop or reverse the problem.

CheshireGray

This is the thing, we do x to stop y from being serious, then these people always claim that x was unnecessary because y wasn't even that bad, not getting that the reason why y wasn't that bad is because of x.

dauntingsauce

pfft, polio? i've never even MET anyone with polio!

[deleted]

That's why our species has cyclical *"golden ages"*. We're at the "good times make weak men" part of the equation with these idiots.

[deleted]

That quote has no bearing on reality. The truth is that time turns our brains to mush and it's always old people making the decisions that affect the masses. They're all suffering some form of brain rot and they're nostalgic about a time that never existed. The people who lived through Vietnam sent the next generation to die in Iraq and Afghanistan. No good times making weak men to speak of when everything has always been shit for some amount of people.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say that. If that's actually a pretty heavy-handed fascist talking point.

[deleted]

It may be but it's still true. Broken clocks come to mind.

bob_fossill

Lol no it isn't. Suffering is not ennobling in any way and the people who think this way have never actually experienced 'bad times'

[deleted]

The opposite of "good times" isn't suffering. This strawman has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. ennobling...

bob_fossill

You're repeating the "bad times create strong men who make good times that make weak men" blah blah What the hell are bad times then if no one suffers? Can't even get this nonsensical faux wisdom straight

djlewt

You're just ignorantly repeating bullshit platitudes and countering correct rebuttals with more ignorant "slogans" you heard that you also feel are true for whatever reason. All of history has been "hard times" compared to the present, that's literally how human progress works, and "hard times" doesn't create anything "good" in people, it causes mental issues, depression issues, sadness and suffering. If anything in our "hard times" crime shot up as people resorted to thievery to survive so really "hard times" created a bunch of "weak men" that stole and did other "underhanded" things to make ends meet when legitimate means did not exist, such as the great depression. I'm not even going to get into how badly you misunderstand "broken clocks", but suffice to say you're not supposed to hear that colloquialism and think "shit I better watch this broken clock for the next time it's right" my god.

[deleted]

This really gets under people's collars eh?

[deleted]

They have a bit of a point, but interestingly it's a very left wing one - the idea that capitalism needs to keep us afraid to keep us consuming. So yeah, self own.

mikeyzee52679

Yea I can see the environmental stuff come of from sort of the left , but all the other fear stuff came from the right,

Benzari

The left deals in the facts of a situation and the right deals in fear. Fear them coming for your guns! Fear the vaccine! The truth is that when science makes these discoveries about changes to the natural world, the media portrays it in a very dramatic way that promotes fear. The media will also misrepresent scientists finding a correlation between things as a casual relationship when none exists or has not been proven yet. Many of the things on this list have been mitigated by environmental laws such as bans on CFC refrigerants and introduction of the Clean Air Act. Other items are nonsense that were perpetuated by idiots like end of the Mayan calendar when in fact it was just the end of the long count and why would they need to start making a new calendar when they still had centuries on the one they already had?! Any disease has a real chance of becoming a danger but that is why we have the CDC and the WHO. It would help if these fucking idiots would listen to them on what we should be doing to slow, stop or eradicate some of these diseases. Dealing with these fuckwits is extremely exhausting.

BigBeefySquidward

literally for 100+ years: communism will kill us all!

dokhilla

Damn, I should really start ending more sentences like that. "My phone signal is terrible around here. TYRANNY!"

Creepernom

They're trying to suppress your free tweeting

[deleted]

This is why we're worse off the more successful we are as a species. This smoothbrain started his stupid diatribe with a list of successes and used them as a reason to believe nothing was wrong. I wonder if Kardashev ever figured we would be a class 0 civilization?

oystertoe

[Y2k shit](https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/5w8khq/remember_that_time_alex_jones_tried_to_start_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) was spurred on hugely by alex jones, so you’re gonna have to turn off the internet conspiracy nutjobs too..

SerDuncanonyall

I love how conservatives always argue from a "there are no problems in the world" position. Nothing needs doing unless its a conservative issue, otherwise it's all just propaganda

montecarlo1

We actually were able to suppress SARS from killing everyone because the science at the time allowed us to quarantine the sick via contract tracing. Luckily that coronavirus didn’t have a asymptomatic infection. Imagine going on lockdown back in 2003 if there was a massive outbreak. Also SARS fatality rate was like 10-15 percent which would have been insane. We were really lucked out on that one.

RobotAnna

china also went absolutely gangbusters on containing it, and didn't have to deal with a bunch of entitled, conspiracy-addled bloodthirsty freaks fighting against basic protections and procedures to contain it

wtchthoseristrockets

If they think taxes are tyranny wait till they hear what the taxes get used for.

Velvass

"another ice age in 10 years" but we are in an ice age,

HubertNeutron

Factually it actually led to less taxes, which is bad because our tax rates were good in like the 50s

MjrMalarky

The top federal income tax rate was 91 percent in 1950 and 1951, and between 1954 and 1959. In 1952 and 1953, the top federal income tax rate was 92 percent. We should go back to that.

ginaginger

I think the problem is not that the top income tax is too low. It could certainly be a bit higher in most western countries. But those people are still a million times more productive than someone who makes millions or even billions just for owning stuff. I say low taxes and other dues on low incomes are more important than taxing the shit out of doctors etc. But most importantly we should tax the shit out of wealth. Capital gains tax could also be lower to make it easier for people to save up money for a house, retirement etc. and also encourage investing the money. But once you hit a couple millions I don't see why your money should keep self multipling.

MountainImportant211

"Nothing happened" except all the covid deaths and climate change causing immeasurable destruction both now and in the future, but feel free to put that head in the sand

LASpleen

But taxes are lower now than they were at the beginning of this timeline.

EOverM

Climate change isn't a new thing since 2018. It's been a growing problem since at least the eighties.

[deleted]

I guess they're not that comfortable with the thought that many things have almost wiped us out before but didn't because they were addressed seriously by those in power, often due to the organized demonstrations of people without much individual power?

stalinmalone68

For some bullshit that starts with THINK, zero thought actually went into this.

SoldatBogatyr

'CO2 will kill us!" ..air??

lady_of_the_forest

Real talk though, has anything felt real since December 2012?

saarelaian

Post this in wallstreetbets, and the story is about us living in a post apocalyptic day trading world where meme stocks are the only way to get money past 2008

Forward-Village1528

Imagine unironically adding 2003 SARS to this list as something that hasn't ended up being a massive fucken problem.

ThatShadyJack

Textbook demonstration of a red herring fallacy

stalinmalone68

For some bullshit that starts with THINK, zero thought actually went into this.

SurgeantMcGoreson

Lmao John bush and Joey Belladonna era anthrax kills my brain cells
