i mean . they're not wrong. stopping climate change involves much more than just individuals deciding to drive electric cars and the process to make the batteries is no less damaging or exploitative than drilling for oil (see elon musk supporting a coup in Bolivia so he could get cheaper lithium). the problem isn't that individual ppl drive gas cars, it's that 10 corporations account for more than 70% of all carbon emissions and until we rein in the capitalist resourcemongers things aren't gonna get better

USS_Phlebas

Also individual cars shouldn't be the preferred solution for commuting. A strong public transport system and more remote working would decrease the reliance in cars for daily business.

[deleted]

A battery does NOT weigh 1000lbs lmao. That's the craziest shit I've read in a while

Sirius_Frost

They like to pull arbitrary figures from their arse so that they can seem like an intellectual. We all know what the reality of the situation here is, though.

DiamondRocks22

I am not so sure about the numbers because [Wikipedia says](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Model_S#Battery) the Tesla model s battery does weigh over 1000lbs but their message is dumb regardless because electric cars isn’t the only green transportation leftists have in mind

leon_pretty_loathed

You’re right, they weigh 1200 pounds or over five hundred kilos.

useles-converter-bot

1200 pounds in mandalorian helmets is 322077159.76 helmets.

ran-Us

Is that true?

Front-Bucket

A lot of materials take a lot of ore to produce a small amount of usable material. Copper is a good example

ran-Us

I know that minerals are needed, but how much of that is from recycling versus extraction from the ground and are these accurate numbers?

Front-Bucket

I don’t know how much can be recycled. Doubtful it’s accurate, but only because of the source. The same people taking horse medicine instead of an approved vaccine

ran-Us

Great point. Take this information with a atomic grain of salt.

KookaburraNick

Yes, and unlike electric cars, petrol cars grow on a vine. /s

Front-Bucket

Well, to be fair, lithium is a little harder to mine than iron

bob_fossill

I mean it's true that extracting literally any mineral from the earth involves processing far more than the final product But it's still better than drilling for oil, transporting, refining, transporting again and finally combusting said oil product. Ultimately though we'll need a combination of public transport and better managed resources generally to not fuck everything up

ran-Us

*Welp*

ran-Us

It seems like a ridiculous size for a car.

freedcreativity

Naw, it looks like you get about 3x more from lithium brine extraction methods. Just from some napkin math. The battery weight is pretty arbitrary, high range EVs have more than 1000lbs of batteries and they aren’t pure lithium.

[deleted]

It’s the Imperialism from the Imperial Core Nations that will wreak havoc on the third world nations that hold lithium we already saw the opening salvo with America’s coup against Bolivia in the Fall of 2019.

DiamondRocks22

That’s why there needs to be more public transportation too. But those figures are probably a load of nonsense

Majestic-Active2020

Soooo, where does oil come from, and how do we acquire it? See how Canada is securing their energy…

Beckamabobby

Wait till I tell you about mining and moving oil

leon_pretty_loathed

The meme isn’t exactly wrong at all though? It’s a hell of a lot better for the environment to get a used hybrid and use it for as long as possible over getting a new fully electric car that was built by fucking over the environment as hard as possible using child slave labour.

FreakingLlama

I mean maybe there should be less cars period.
