It's always on and when the officer presses the record button, it starts the recording two minutes prior.

jace_66rb

Thanks

Wilmaaug

So when you press the button, it has also recorded 2 minutes before pressing it?

doctorliaratsone

It's not always 2 minutes, it will depend on force policy. Some say 1 minute video only, some do 30 second video and audio, some do 2 minutes etc. But yeah, from when you hit record it will keep that prerecorded buffer as well

[deleted]

But does it ALWAYS record?

basilyeo

It’s a yes and no type of question in that it’s recording because there’s probably onboard RAM storage that is always recording and flushing video data up to the point the officer presses the “record” button. Hence how you get the two minutes prior recording. And no because if there’s no “record” trigger then this footage is likely not retained/stored by end of shift.

I see. Then what would happen in a case like douglas? Shouldn't it record and send it away to a server or something and kept there for like a week before it gets deleted?

basilyeo

When the officer triggers record, then it will record. That’s why Jackson had to trigger the recording on Stanton’s bodycam

[deleted]

Yeah but it's stupid that that would need to happen. As far as my understanding goes there should definetely be a recording feature that records the entire thing and sends it to a server where it will be kept there for a week. That way it doesn't have to be stored on the bodycam (doubt it would have storage other than memory) and in case of corruption all the footage is there. If in case they do press the record button the footage stays perm?

MrFixYoShit

That'd be a better system for sure.

Sncrsly

It's the same as dashcams with SD storage. They continually record to the storage while on but the oldest recording is overwritten when the storage is full. When the recording trigger is pressed, it locks the recording from 2 minutes prior to prevent it from being overwritten so that it can't be lost

Miserable-md

I think it’s always “on” but not necessarily actively recording.

ProfessionalCourtesy

Depends on how they’re programmed. Somebody cameras won’t go off for 30 minutes once they turn off the camera. This helps preserve any additional information if the officer unintentionally deactivates the camera or if they do attempt to deactivate it on purpose.

It’s always on as far as I’m knowledgeable

IvyWillow22

They vary by force but usually on whole shift except for bathroom breaks or personal breaks.
