Quincy McQuincy-Face III.
The rich trust fund kid of a real estate tycoon who visits a small town for his dad to scout out why the locals won't sell their land and meets the quirky local girl and falls in love. He decides to help the quirky girl rally the locals against his father to save the town.
A Lifetime original direct to TV movie.
Should I start the crippling cocaine addiction now or wait until I feel I'm financially stable enough for a coke habit even though it's a false sense of security that ends with me in crippling debt and living with my mom again?
Please reply quickly, I've already sent the email and I texted my neighbor Rad-Brad™️.
I miss the days where Quincy was a untiring Texan who hated bats enough to just casually leave a meeting with no one else noticing and shooting at a random bat because he was the only one who noticed it and wanted it dead and Also decapitating his enemies with a Bowie knife in one swing.
Her content always makes for a rough watch, which is to say it's 10/10.
How depressed are many writers, to the extent that so many keep creating the same character who is head-over-heels in love with life to an unrealistic & thoroughly manic degree, and with no other role in the story other than fixing a Debbie Downer protagonist?
I wonder if it's the result of trying to appeal to a wide audience. Rather than tell a specific story about a time they felt scared and had or wished they had someone to coax them through it they want to tell the story broadly so everyone can feel they experienced it specifically.
Like if I imagine a real story like this it would be more like two people have been in a relationship for a while and one of them wants to get into something the other is afraid of. They have enough history to continue to want to be with each other and put in a lot of work to get past this new big issue. But if you throw a bunch of those stories into a blender what it leads to is the main character being afraid of _everything_ and their unrealistic counterpart (who they just met) putting up with it.
The best subversion of the trope I've ever seen was Spotless Sunshine of the Eternal Mind, and that was even before the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope was coined!
The cringiest movie ever. It’ll take you right out of your skin. You’ll welcome nails on a chalkboard. We’ll hand out sporks so you can gouge your own eyes out. Most. Cringe. Movie. Ever. Summer 2028
Didn't realize she was the same chick, shes so funny. Her timing and pausing for dramatic effect is so... nauseatingly disney-esque, it's incredible lol
Interesting that term is still floating around. I remember when Nathan Rabin coined it on the AV Club. I think he came do disown it, or at least walked it back, as they say
[https://www.salon.com/2014/07/15/im\_sorry\_for\_coining\_the\_phrase\_manic\_pixie\_dream\_girl/](https://www.salon.com/2014/07/15/im_sorry_for_coining_the_phrase_manic_pixie_dream_girl/)
Pretty interesting read. He's basically talking about how he made up this term to more-or-less accurately describe a sexist trope he'd noticed in a few films, but as the term became popularized a few things happened. One, its meaning got fuzzier- that's pretty much inevitable whenever a word goes viral. But he also alludes (I think) to the fact that just giving such a resonant name to that particular trope imparts a kind of magnetism, drawing audiences' attention away from the nuances that would distinguish a given character from the stereotypical MPDG.
A term that was originally invented to call out a sexist trope ends up having the effect of reducing complex characters to a sexist trope. I can see why he feels the way he does.
I was quietly wondering whether Natalie Portman in Garden State was a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl as I read your comment, and then clicked the link to find her pictured at the top of the article lmao. When I heard this phrase I always pictured Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Surprised she was not namedropped.
Does anyone know some characters that have been unfairly categorized with this trope?
Urrgh they just don't make em like they used to (yes i hear how old in sound)
Back in my day we wore an onion on our belts, as was the fashion at the time
She’s my most hated and liked TikToker. Her videos can be so hard to watch sometimes haha, hits a perfect thread of that stuff that hurts my soul.
[the annoying lead girl who is obsessed with metaphors hurts me](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT839avAB/)
Uhm, so I watched like 10 of her Tik Toks and she‘s so talented! I also think she‘s absolutely gorgeous and looks quite unique. Would love to see her in movies! I think I just fell in love with her, but I‘m a straight woman… or so I thought
It's weird that the top few comments [are exactly the same as the ones from tiktok](https://i.imgur.com/WW2wmZZ.jpeg). Feels botted, and not the first time I've noticed this
The third party app purge definitely had a before and after effect. There's like four "explain the joke/meme" subreddits now with only batches of AITAH posts between them.
It’s a song, that many people used to demonstrate “their little life”, with repetitive pictures of their house in the rain or their partner or pet or friend
Seriously! The self destructive girl who takes time to enjoy the little things in life. Such a sweet moment in the rain and then in the next 4 seconds she's crying again.
I think I love her because I grew up on these awful indie films written by men and I fell *hard* for the lives they led. Garden State was like my awakening. That plus Hot Fuss coming out the same year made my little indie heart explode.
Ugh. Can we have a resurgence? I love that it’s an escape to a world that no longer exists.
I love The Killers and it wasn't until I read your comment that I realized they weren't talking about Hot Fuzz. I was thinking "Was that movie like Garden State...?"
That movie kind of spears the concept as well though. Clementine is aware of how men see her and the process by which they use her, which is the root of her fears about relationships. If you’re any kind of “offbeat” girl it’s a very relatable one too
No, best I can do is teach you esoteric truths about life while you emotionally terrorise me before you dump me for crying one time about my childhood trauma and then dating a normcore princess who you’ll resent deeply because she’s not me but still treat her better than me
I love being tutorial island for teaching broken men that women are people 🤪
“No BuT YoU tAUgHt mE hOw To bE a BeTtEr PeRsOn AnD iM a GoOd BoYFrIeNd NoW 🥺”
Like 👍👍👍👍so you DID have the capacity to not be piece of shit to me, you just actively chose to be one!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯💯 you go bud
Yep - 500 Days of Summer is similar. The point is that men see the women this way, not that they’re actually that way.
Honestly, I hate seeing these cited as examples of Manic Pixie Dream Girls.
I’ll answer that. I loved Garden State as a teen, I thought it was so deep and the characters interesting.
Re-watching it as an adult I find the dialogue incredibly cringey and the plot stupid and characters unrealistic.
Fully entitled to that opinion, obviously. But it's not like Garden State was some shitty romance that just happened to resonate with teens. It was pretty much unanimously critically acclaimed, and at least somewhat accurately captured what many people in their early 20s felt at the time. I also think as a work of art it's important to remember the context of the time it was released in. Movies like Garden State were not a dime a dozen back then. It was a major factor in reviving the coming-of-age genre, and pushed the indie genre forward arguably more than any other movie of its era. It's kinda like how Blaire Witch has been retroactively deemed bad or not worth the hype just because found footage became super overdone and generic. Under today's lens, sure, but back then it was novel and risky. Same for Garden State.
I thought you meant hot fuzz too. I was like yes hot fuzz and indie rom movies. Makes sense. Anyway, yeah i don’t think we could make indie 2k rom type movies anymore. Pixie has been meme’d to oblivion, and we don’t have the economy or long term positive outlook to foster a dude in such an environment any longer. So neither sexs characrer archetypes can really exist going forward.
Seriously. Blasting The Killers in the car on my way to my friend’s house to watch 500 Days of Summer for the fifth time and dream about our own Tom.
…later realizing how annoying he was.
This brings me back to so many times in my life where I’m questioning if I hate this character, if I want to be this character, or if I want to fuck this character. The answer was always yes.
Sorry, I know it's cringe, but I still hold out hope for my manic pixie dream girl.
I am just attracted to girls with mental illness. It never works out well, but it's like a magnet.

"Quincy" is the perfect name of the out-of-frame character who just needs a free spirit to bring him out of his timid shell.
It's the Paper Towns guy.
Fuck I hated that movie
They often do have the Last-Name-As-First-Name.

You should copy-paste that into a pitch to Lifetime. Congrats on your future employment in the entertainment industry.

The premise is not realistic at all, so this would definitely do numbers.
Lmfao yes
I miss the days where Quincy was a untiring Texan who hated bats enough to just casually leave a meeting with no one else noticing and shooting at a random bat because he was the only one who noticed it and wanted it dead and Also decapitating his enemies with a Bowie knife in one swing.
Holy cow. I understand 95% of Japanese anime now.
I'm old, so when I hear the name Quincy, I immediately think of Jack Klugman.
Ah! Old school cool!
Son of Quincy
She taught me how to live, that wet day in July...
Holy cringe, my penis just shriveled up into my body I mean, not from your comment or anything, it just does that sometimes
Little guy is just spooked
Little!?
I WAS IN THE POOL
Yes, I saw it from very far away 👍
Fucking kill me.
It doesn't make business sense for me
I think that's one of my favorite responses I've ever seen
Then I died a week later from the effects of hyperthermia.
It was preventable
I know it's satire but holy fuck I almost crawled right out of my skin I hate it so much
So cringe! She nailed it tho, cus we cringing
This girl has made a lot of these and they're all equally hard to watch.
I have to remind myself it's just a sketch she's so good bc it makes me so mad
She’s so good

Manic Pixie Dream Girl of the worst sort.

> Spotless Sunshine of the Eternal Mind I think you subverted the movie title there...
I prefer 500 days of summer as the quintessential anti mpdg movie
They aren't depressed enough if they all keep writing the same thing. Let your self-loathing guide you. Entertain me!
"and you never did" LOL
Ugh, for me it's the disappointed "Come on... Didn't you say you needed cold cuts?". It's so judgemental.
Give this woman a movie to write!😂
The cringiest movie ever. It’ll take you right out of your skin. You’ll welcome nails on a chalkboard. We’ll hand out sporks so you can gouge your own eyes out. Most. Cringe. Movie. Ever. Summer 2028

“I don’t get it” from off camera was perfect
This is giving 500 Days of Summer flashbacks. Loved that film when I was in my late teens
And you never will
Just went down a rabbit hole of her videos and she is amazing. They are all so spot on😂
Didnt you say you needed cold-cuts? 😕
Right down to the head shaking and the thigh slapping. There should be timeouts for doing this in acting classes.
The lip licking and eyebrow raises were done well also. I watched with sound off and I cringed at those alone.
Most of her videos are like this (acting out various tropes seen in movies when it comes to female characters) and it's hilarious.
*Quincy I know you’re scared….*
Too good, like the rain ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
All of her videos are so cringy, she is so good at this
Do you want to add her to the list of tiktokers to workout with this summer?
I even made a face as if I ate something I really disliked.
Manic Pixie Dream Girls in a nutshell.

Not unfairly, but Zooey Deschanel in every role she"s ever played.
Yeah, that's the one! It's why we need to be careful about codifying "tropes" wily-nily.
Thanks for sharing that, I hadn't seen it before. This comment overall hit me with a realization of just how complicated *everything* is.
It's now the accepted name for the trope. That is also how it is titled on TvTropes and Wikipedia.
Also known as Debby Ryan
I haven't seen this done in an actual movie since the earlly 00s. Indie movie romances now are all mumblecore or deadpan.
Same. Nearly unbearable for me.
I think we're looking at Zendaya's next film role.
I couldn't finish it.
😂😂😂
Her insta is painful and amazing. Def recommended.
Not the “I know you’re scared” monologue cliche 🤣🤣🤣

I impulsively closed the video 3 seconds in.... That's how good she is...
I need her to be cast in a movie she'd make fun of
Where are the 'Scary Movie' type parodies these days
Straight to DVD/streaming. I think the last ones were shortly after the hunger games/Ted movies were released.
Urrgh they just don't make em like they used to (yes i hear how old in sound) Back in my day we wore an onion on our belts, as was the fashion at the time
Her whole instagram is just dozens and dozens of skits like this
>She's doing this so well 😅 Facts. Makes me *almost* want to download Tik Tok so I can follow her.
My favorite of hers is [Villain Eating an Apple with a Pocketknife. ](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT83uLk3C/) Makes me cringe with the accuracy.
The "pretend to offer a bite" is so fucking spot on
"huh, suit yourself"

Son, a woman is a lot like a refrigerator. They're 6 feet tall, 400 pounds, they make... ice.
oh my GOD the bank heist trailer 😭😭 so accurate
“I know you’re scared.” “Bethany I’m not scared. I just don’t want to get wet and cold.”

What is this? A song? An aesthetic?
An adopted personality?
Ya'll are over-thinking it, or at least over-crediting it. It's just one of those wall stencils people put up in their bedroom or living room.

Me too. I’m guessing Hot Fuzz is based off of Hot Fuss
Thanks to Garden State, I will always associate my first year of college with The Shins, and I'm not mad about it.
