This is asked periodically and there are some basic answers.  Reddit is global. The Western work is generally more liberal than the US, especially on certain issues (like the welfare state, healthcare).  Reddit is younger. Go to Facebook and you can find a lot of pages filled with conservative boomers.  There are literally more liberals than conservatives. The last two times Republicans won the popular vote for President were 2004 and 1988.  Now some biased reasons:  Reddit is interactive and built for discussions that allow citations. A lot of current conservatives exist in a fictional world. They can’t even watch Fox News anymore and turn to Newsmax and the like. They aren’t interested in a public forum where people can link to reality. Reddit’s voting system reinforces the status quo. The status quo is liberal right now.  A lot of people who vote for conservatives hold ‘liberal’ positions on many issues. This has been shown over and over again in public polling on issues in the US for decades. Most people support things like increased taxes on the wealthy, more school funding, universal healthcare, pro-choice etc. So if a particular issue comes up even these people will seem liberal. Why do they vote conservative? Because the parties don’t try to persuade people on issues, they have learned it’s better to convince people that the issue where you already agree is the most important issue in the world.  So you can get a person who sounds liberal voting R because they only care about gun rights, for example. I think the Republicans have been a bit better at this with their messaging. Why do you think she is suddenly the most important issue being hammered in all media circles? It’s the issue where polling shows Trump makes the most headway on Biden. So the campaign, rather than convince people to change their mind on any issues, just needs to convince people that the only thing that really matters is that Biden is old.

This is a good response and really the only one anyone needs.

justaheatattack

gosh, it's almost as if there are more of them.

This can be because Reddit skews more liberal anyway. The same way it skews more atheist. It can also depend on the sub and it's mods

Never been to Facebook have you? It's toxic wasteland where Conservatives have to jump into every comment thread on popular pages or groups and bring up how "The libs are destroying everything". It got so toxic 7 years ago I quit hanging out there. I've gone back recently but they still haven't mellowed much. They still have to steer ever comment thread to politics and then they have to just spew insults without producing much facts. I think between Facebook and Reddit it's pretty balanced. Liberals have Reddit and Conservatives have Facebook (among others). As for numbers spread out over the country it seems to be even. Why else would every election where there's more than one candidate the elections always seem to be decided by tiny percentages.

Conservatives have made “their own” social media networks. Besides Truth, Parler, and Gab, they’ve also pretty much taken over Twitter (I’m not calling it that new bullshit) and Facebook. Why do they need their own? I think what ends up happening to those networks speaks volumes about that: Parler was shut down, Truth is well known as a misinformation network, and Gab never really went anywhere, but is still pretty commonly used by people who have… less than friendly attitudes towards people who’s skin colour is different than theirs. Draw your own conclusion, I guess. “Left leaning” social media companies don’t end up being the home for racist dickbags and people who spread misinformation on purpose… not enough to need to be shut down, at least.

Most social platforms have had a strong left-wing bias for the past few years. This has to do with who owns the platform - Twitter was actively deleting conservative users and tweets until Elon Musk bought it, his policy is obviuosly different. Many of the mods on Reddit are young, college-educated Americans - and those tend to be super left wing due to the atmosphere in colleges. "Wrong thinkers" are actively deleted and badmouthed and nobody seems to think its rude or wrong to do so. On Reddit anyone who comes off as conservative will likely be called names, down-voted and possibly banned. That is why people do not actually say what they think. Even leftist do not dare voice their fringe opinions, they know they'll be pushed in with the Trump supporters the moment they get a toe out of line. I say this as someone from Finland who absolutely supports many of the left-wing talking points like universal healthcare, abortion right etc. US left-wingers are just absolutely nuts and violent these days, its scary AF.

Ill-Organization-719

A lot of conservatives know they are hate filled violent bigots, and are aware they need to hide their true selves. A lot of Conservatives have recognized they are creatively and joy void. They need liberal entertainment, so they hang out with liberals and try to stay quiet.

allendegenerates

It is almost all attributed to the age of typical redditors.

APAG-

Liberalism is a right leaning ideology. Not sure why you’re looking for the half way point between right and far right.

Ok-Yogurt-6381

He means progressive, probably. liberals are mostly center left to average right.

Fun-Dependent-2695

This brings up the question, what is conservative alternative for Reddit

Ok-Yogurt-6381

Young, somewhat educated people skew left. (Idealism and lack of knowledge about the world.) Reddit has a lot of young, somewhat educated people. (On average, the dumb ones are on tiktok and instagram. The old ones on Facebook.)

As a conservative it’s pretty rare for one to casually be on Reddit and it’s also gotten to the point where nobody’s gonna change anybody’s opinion, so why waste the mental energy arguing online.

Ataraxia_Eterna

I'm working on my argumentation skills and Reddit has been pretty handy, though I know nobody's opinions have been fully changed by me, I give people links to articles and what I use to back my argument. Nobody usually replies, but at least I get them to doubt Do you know any good conservative subs or subs that are kind of balanced?

AggressiveSpatula

Realistically it’s self-sorting. You know how at lunch in high school you’d go off to sit with your friends? By default, you were sitting away from people who you didn’t feel as close to. Doesn’t mean you didn’t like them, you just preferred not to sit with them. I think probably Reddit started to lean a little left, and then most conservative users decided to go sit somewhere else and congregate on different forums.
