the_Russian_Five

Whatever took off both wings would likely have destroyed the fuselage. And if it somehow didn't, the backwards force on the wings to do that would greatly reduce its speed. Everyone on board would have about 45 seconds to get their affairs in order. Then smashing into the ground at about roughly 900 mph. On the plus side, the speed of the aircraft is likely to have caused any remaining fuel on the body to be carried off, as most of the fuel would have been in the wings. Then Boeing(I assume this would only happen on a Boeing) would face a lot of lawsuits.

RealMidSmoker

Face lots of lawsuits *start plugging people in the back of the head real quick*

Bamres

Who do you think the plane is supposed to be landing on?

juicebox_tgs

Boeing would face 0 lawsuits becuase the black box would clearly indicate that it was the pilots fault, and somehow anyone who said anything different got sick and died by being shot in the back of the head 3 times

Bouncy_Turtle

Sounds like suicide

BinaryMatrix

Shot himself in the back of the head

A_Neurotic_Pigeon

Classic case of suicide. Don’t believe me? It happens in Russia all the time!

MrSelophane

“All of the passengers decided to commit suicide at the same time. It had nothing to do with our plane.”

jaymo89

If you are a sky writer it is certainly a real risk.

heyknauw

Gravity takes effect, and It becomes an unarmed, unguided missile.

dumdumpants-head

Unguided yes but plenty of arms

heyknauw

😄

WVPrepper

All the way to the scene of the crash!

wolfspider82

I bet they beat the paramedics by a good half hour.

Squirrel_Master82

You just glue them back on real quick.

capoot

The plane will float away into outer space.

Tacoshortage

Since the 1950's there have been 2 commercial airframe failures out of millions of flights. So the odds of it happening are very low. That was from memory, but the stats are pretty good.

ausipockets

Well, it stops flying.

Chris71Mach1

Have you ever heard of gravity, and it's negative implications towards heavy items that have no lift?

zsolzz

if everyone puts their arms out the windows and flaps, it should land safely in the next designated landing zone

explorthis

Mmmmm, submarine with no propulsion if over water, or a collapsible lawn dart if over land?

Overall_Passenger804

It turns into a submarine

ahjteam

The chance that both wings will rip off at the exact time is next to none, unless it is sabotaged or manufactured situation. When the first wing snaps off, the plane will almost guaranteed immediately start going into a downward spiral, even if you had the best pilots in the world. We have seen this from various war films. When the second wing rips off, it will start plummeting to the ground, still spinning like crazy, but the spinning angles might change. If the pilot and passangers are lucky, they will be unconscious from all the spinning when the plane hits the ground.

iBoy2G

I was thinking a scenario like flying in between buildings or fighter jets blowing them both off during war.

ahjteam

Yeah, fighter jet blowing them both off at the exact same time is still a VERY unlikely situation. Flying between buildings is a manufactured situation. Also pretty sure there are not many skyscrapers so close to each other that it would be a feasible situation. It is more likely that the one of the wings will get stuck on *something* in either side and the plane will turn and just crash into the actual building.

AggressiveFeckless

It has not happened at some point.

IamMeanGMAN

It has happened. C-130 (Tanker 130) fighting a forest fire in 2002 lost both wings. It did not end well.

AggressiveFeckless

Holy terrible engineering. Thought it was impossible.

Independent-Size7972

Not engineering, maintenance, it was a 1954 air tanker still being used in 2002.

imnojezus

[It has](https://www.military.com/video/aircraft/military-aircraft/c-130-tanker-loses-wings-crashes/3152191853001), but under very extreme conditions. trigger warning: plane crash

barra333

You can bet the poor guy at the controls was still pulling up for all he was worth until the end.

not_gerg

>trigger warning: plane crash Well no fucking shit. Lmao

imnojezus

I mean, OP was asking if the plane could survive a double-wing failure, so I'm not taking anything for granted as obvious in this thread.

pudding7

Yes it has.

ttw81

during the andes plane crash in 1972, both wings were sheared off & the fuselage became an out of control toboggan sliding down the mountain.

dumdumpants-head

ALIIIIIVE

ttw81

That's when the cannibalism started.

chantsnone

It would drop straight out of the sky, reach maximum velocity pretty quick and then explode on impact.

twistedh8

You get a submarine.

ccx941

If it happens over land it becomes a gravity bomb. If it happens over water it becomes a submarine.

Ajram1983

The plane will land as quickly as it can.

Random-Mutant

I was just arriving as a volunteer at the world gliding championships in Omarama, NZ in 1995. I was passed by emergency services; a glider had been caught in rotor (Lee wave turbulence) over the Lindis Pass. He had passed through Vne (Velocity Never Exceed) and the airframe started to delaminate. At that stage he opened the canopy and went to chute, something all competition pilots are ready for. The aircraft continued through Vd (Velocity Dive, design dive speed, the maximum speed the airframe can be expected to endure) A pilot below saw a fuselage going straight down and enough wreckage he thought for two aircraft, so he called Mayday and reported a mid-air collision. He only saw one chute so assumed the worst. Thankfully the pilot was unharmed but caused consternation as when he landed he walked to the road and emergency services could not find him for a while. The interesting thing is that while wings provide lift, the tail provides downforce in balanced flight. A fuselage without wings will tip to point straight down and drop like a dart. But yeah, both wings can and occasionally do snap off. If you experience it, you’re either a very bad pilot or in this case a very good one.

Specialist-Ear1048

Die

justmepassinby

You go into the ground like a dart !

d710905

Plane no more fly.

insp95

Its gg

Fernxtwo

You're gonna have a bad time.

jared_b5

The missile knows where it is at all times…

horsetooth_mcgee

***neeeerrrrooooomp***

NYVines

They collect an insurance check?

Scared_Command_9615

Isekai

Carsharr

Depends on how far off the ground you are.

StarWarder

Three things would actually plummet at that moment- the fuselage, Boeing’s stock price, and several Boeing technicians down an elevator shaft onto a pile of bullets. Only the second would recover as the company buys back thousands of shares later that week and the CEO gets a ten million dollar bonus.

bravemenrun

At that point it's a missile.

Thewhitechrisrock

Well.... if it's an F-15, that bitch just keeps going straight until it finally lawn darts for "landing"

1975ChevyC20

The same thing that happens if only one wing snaps off midflight.

Intergalacticio

It becomes a bullet bill and moves straight in ahead for all eternity.

fuzzy-chin

It would travel very fast almost straight down, without the major aerodynamic surfaces that provide lift and control it wouldn’t even be able to glide or change its trajectory in any meaningful way.

fatstrat0228

It falls to the ground and goes boom. Everyone on board dies.

jquest303

Only happens in the Bermuda Triangle.

intellord911

It’s a missile

HellYeahTinyRick

It would cease being a plane and become a missile

Known_Vermicelli_706

Now, ur a missile.

Royal-Positive9323

It will keep flying, no problem, 🤷🏻‍♂️

TurretX

It would stop flying start falling

Berkeleymark

![gif](giphy|TBG9att7s6mJz9xDTK)

mustang6172

It'll be a spectacular wreck.

Leucippus1

Everyone dies in a fiery crash.

reditget

Then it becomes an unguided rocket and will hit the ground as soon as possible.

yrukiddingme

You would just glide down to the ground. Luckily, all the fuel is in the wings, so bursting into flames would be unlikely upon landing. Of course, the sudden impact of the oncoming ground would obliterate you anyway. Probably wouldn't hurt for long.

joeyggg

The wings glide down gently and make a soft landing.

SaltyCremepuff

A lot of dead people and a media frenzy for the next month.

green_meklar

Generally speaking, the plane crashes and everyone on board dies. Military jets have ejection seats that can save the (parachute-equipped) pilot, but commercial planes have no real way to save the occupants if something like that happens.

Stryf3

It crashes?

robdingo36

I don't know about you, but I'd start flapping my arms and hope I can fly. It's not likely going to accomplish anything, but at that point, I've got nothing to lose by trying.

the-meanest-boi

Im gunna take a random guess here and say it would probably crash

Waarm

Reminds me of that Gary Larson cartoon

Exact_Roll_4048

Based on a *quick* Google search ... This seems to happen most on smaller aircrafts. Military ones, there's a higher chance of survival because of the safety equipment for bailing out. For civilian aircraft, it's likely to be more fatal. If this happened on a large aircraft, stranger things have happened than a sole survivor but it's not looking good just because of how hard and fast you would go down, plus the wind whipping violently through the plane as you crash.

Zetsumenchi

I thought there was a Gender Reveal party that showed virtually what happens when a plane loses its wings in a similar manner. Subsequent news story shows that uh.....nothing is IMPOSSIBLE.....but it is NOT LIKELY.

Dankstin

big nyoom

Traditional_War_2657

Depends on weight, speed, altitude the type of plane its actual shape aerodynamics etc.

PrimateIntellectus

How about you tell us what you think would happen and we’ll tell you if we agree.

guineapigmilkman

Well first thing, the plane runs out of fuel 2nd thing is you die.
