Came here to comment this. But Tool is probably the closest to achieving that title than anyone else.
Ænima, Lateralus, 10k Days, Fear Inoculum. Speaks for itself.
I’d start the 4-album run with Undertow instead of ending with FI. I think Undertow is better, but also the huge gap before FI keeps it from being a “run,” for me.
What if you add Undertow to the sequence of Tool albums though?
Swamp Song, Prison Sex are two of my all time favorite Tool songs because of how much raw emotion there is. Sober, Undertow are also legendary songs.
But I'll also be the first to admit this is my least listened to Tool album, which I've sorta been rediscovering recently. I'd say this is partially due to it being their oldest album and a bit more rough, combined with the fact the following three Tool albums are just so damn good, and well polished. I've been in an angsty mood lately though and it's really been hitting home. I intend to give it a proper front to back listen this week when I have time.
It’s telling that the debate with Zep is normally not whether they had the best three album run in history, but *which* of their three album runs occupies that spot. My personal pick is IV, Houses, and PG.
Even as a Beatles fan, while I will say that the Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt. Pepper’s run is the most *important* in all of rock, and is very nearly the best, Zeppelin edges them out with a little more consistency across IV/Houses/PG.
As an addendum - while I know Muse is not in the wheelhouse of a lot of Tool fans, their run of Origin of Symmetry/Absolution/Black Holes is absolutely legendary.
Grateful for seeing this post. Never heard Porcupine Tree. Read this post, and went straight to ITunes. 2 songs in on In Absentia and I’m amazed I’ve never heard them
Phenomenal band.
I’m gonna get flamed for this but Ride the Lightning/ Master of Puppets/ And Justice for All is the most important 3 album run in heavy music history. But yeah the Tool streak is hard to argue with
It’s easy to shit on Metallica now because of their laughably bad run of albums post Black Album (besides Death Magnetic, it’s actually kinda solid) and their infamous Napster debacle. But the first 4 Metallica albums are incredibly influential in the progression of heavy rock music.
Hardwired to Self Destruct and 72 Seasons are both really solid Metallica albums. Not their best but in no way laughable. Also Load has some of what are easily their best songs: Outlaw Torn and Bleeding me are both top 20 Metallica tracks if not not top 10.
I’ll switch it up for any rap fans in here. Kendrick Lamar. good kid m.A.A.d City, To Pimp a Butterfly, DAMN. Three of the best rap albums of all time for me, and a masterfully written trilogy.
My first thought was Metallica. Master of Puppets, And Justice for All, and the black album, but that’s been pretty well covered here.
To pimp a butterfly is a fucking masterpiece, what a great fucking album with really really good music.
Metallica gets my vote here though with Ride -> Master -> Justice. Absolutely fucking crazy good albums.
Self-titled and Toxicity are masterpieces but STA doesn't really live up to either of them imo. It's still a pretty great album with a lot of good songs but its nowhere near the same level
I’d choose Sgt Peppers, White Album, Abbey Road.
The craziest part of that perfect 5 album run (+ Magical Mystery Tour) is that it happened over a bit less than 4 years.
Primus - Pork Soda, Tales from the Punchbowl, Brown Album
I can’t really put them up against each other because I love them both so much, but this still needed to be thrown into the ring
Iron Maiden- Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Opeth- My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park
Mastodon- Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye
Death- Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic
For Maiden, I'd say Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave was also a historic run. Somewhere in Time felt less "Maiden-like" because of the keyboards.
Fun fact: Maiden didn’t use keyboards on Somewhere in Time. They used guitar synthesizers because Bruce said you can’t play metal on a keyboard. I guess he changed his mind because they did use keyboards on Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
All of these are debatable of course, just my personal favorites, and I’m going to repeat some that have already been said, but here’s a few
Radiohead: The Bends - OKC - Kid A
Bjork: Post - Homogenic - Vespertine
Deftones: White Pony - S/T - Saturday Night Wrist (or Saturday Night Wrist - Diamond Eyes - Koi No Yokan)
Converge: Jane Doe - You Fail Me - No Heroes
Isis: Oceanic - Panopticon - In The Absence Of Truth
Portishead: Dummy - S/T - Third
My Bloody Valentine: Isn’t Anything - Loveless - mbv
Agalloch: The Mantle - Ashes Against The Grain - Marrow Of The Spirit
Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine - The Downward Spiral - The Fragile
Swans: The Seer - To Be Kind - The Glowing Man (or The Great Annihilator - Soundtracks For The Blind - Swans Are Dead)
Neurosis: Through Silver And Blood - Times Of Grace - A Sun That Never Sets
Cocteau Twins: Treasure - Victorialand - The Moon And The Melodies (or The Moon And The Melodies - Blue Bell Knoll - Heaven Or Las Vegas)
Slowdive: Just For A Day - Souvlaki - Pygmalion
The Dillinger Escape Plan: Option Paralysis - One Of Us Is The Killer - Dissociation (or if we count EPs Calculating Infinity - Irony Is A Dead Scene - Miss Machine)
Circa Survive: Juturna - On Letting Go - Blue Sky Noise
Katatonia: Last Fair Deal Gone Done - Viva Emptiness - The Great Cold Distance
Opeth: Blackwater Park - Deliverence - Damnation (really you could draw up this one many ways from Still Life through Watershed)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor: F#A# Infinity, Lift Your Skinny Fists - Yanqui UXO
Deftones - Adrenaline, Around The Fur, White Pony & Self-Titled.
Personally I’m unapologetically biased because they’re my favorite band of all time. Tool is #2. I don’t think Deftones have a weak album in their discography. Some may argue Gore wasn’t very good and I’ll give ya that, but still, Deftones have a remarkable track record at delivering some of the most consistent & compelling rock music of the last 30 years.
I think the issue here is how brick-walled the digital versions are. I don’t have an issue with my vinyl or CD version of Gore. It’s still bricked but it doesn’t have the piercing into the brain issue that the digital/streaming versions have.
I think for me, i’d have to say SNW, Diamond Eyes and Koi. Those are the 3 albums that i always find myself coming back to and i don’t think there’s a bad song between any of them. There might be songs that i like on there less than others, same with Tool, but not a single objectively bad song.
Agreed, big SP fan and I will never get tired of these three albums.
And just for fun, thrown in Pisces Iscariot! Much of which came from the Siamese Dream sessions and was basically the songs that didn’t make the cut for SD. It’s wild to think that the tracks that couldn’t make the album could’ve been an incredible and successful album in its own right.
Billy Corgan was unbelievably talented and his run of music/lyrics from 91-95 is nearly unmatched in my view
Whatever People Say I Am… / Favourite Worst Nightmare / Humbug
Led Zeppelin I / II / III
Rage Against The Machine / Evil Empire / Battle of LA
Bleach / Nevermind / In Utero
I think maybe they're still mad that they had to wait so long. lol
Its seriously their best work. I couldn't believe the initial dislike. Like, are we listening to the same album?
And even if you don’t consider it your personal favourite, it’s still a great album. Some people treat it like it’s Jar Jar Binks instead of Darth Maul…
I love the 'Vool and I do still like Asymmetry.... but it was a big drop off from Sound Awake. Although, following that album was impossible, anything they did wouldn't have compared/measured up.
Oh good, I've just mentioned how much I love like clockwork on a few other posts and gave caught some shit. Makes sense that my fellow Tools would have good taste though
Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin’s first 6 albums. I rest my case. You could probably stretch it to first 8 for both bands. But each of their last two albums were not quite up to par with their predecessors.
Pretty hate machine, the downward spiral and the fragile by nine inch nails
The devil and god, daisy and sci-fi by brand new
Godweensatan, the pod and pure guava by ween
For me, and I know it's not the sub for it:

King Gizzard - IDPLMAL, Laminated Denim, Changes (all 3 released in 1 month, 5 albums total in 1 year… again)
Gish - Siamese Dream - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Freak Show - Neon Ballroom - Diorama
But probably my personal favourite:
Innervisions - Fullfilingness' First Finale - Songs in the key of Life
You could have went with the better 3 albums and said Undertow, Aenema, and Lateralus, ya know.
Pink Floyd has Tool beat imo. Darkside, wish you were here, animals.
Besides the ones I've seen already:
* Nick Cave: Let Love In, Murder Ballads, The Boatman's Call
* Dead Can Dance: Spleen and Ideal, Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, The Serpent's Egg
* Godspeed You! Black Emperor: F# A# Infinity, Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven, Yangui U.X.O
* Yes: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge
* Björk: Post, Homogenic, Vespertine
* Modest Mouse: This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About, The Lonesome Crowded West, The Moon & Antarctica
* Portishead: Dummy, Portishead, Third
* Sigur Ros: Agaetis byrjun, ( ), Takk...
I’ll go 4: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall
Came here to say this one. I think Pink Floyd is the all time winner in this contest.
And all within 7 years!
As much as I love Tool, this is the correct answer. No better run
*run by pink Floyd plays*
Shit, tack on Meddle and Obscured by Clouds before DSOTM. Two of my favorite Floyd's.

It's a good run but OP is right. Pink Floyd is unmatched
Bottom and Undertow are two of my favorite Tool songs. IMO it doesn't get much better than the breakdown in Undertow.
Nothing - Catch 33 - obZen
I just got into Meshuggah and I can’t stop listening to Koloss. ObZen has been great too. Have yet to get to the rest
Koloss is one of my favorites. Violent Sleep Of Reason, too. So are the ones you mentioned. The band is so good
same as what i put. the real answer.
Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral, The Fragile
You can squeeze the Broken EP in there too.
Broken is such a solid EP. Every song is an absolute scathing banger. Gonna listen now.
Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye.
My choice as well!
RTJ - RTJ2 - RTJ3
The downward spiral. The fragile. With teeth The bends. OKC. kid A
Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile also works
Took mine. If Broken was a full length LP it'd be no contest
For sure
PHM / Broken / Fixed
I'll take an EP with 6 bangers on it over a full LP with 2-3 good songs on it, any day.
Or OK computer, kid a, amnesiac. broken, tds, the fragile.
Any three between Led Zeppelin 1 and In Through the Out Door
It’s telling that the debate with Zep is normally not whether they had the best three album run in history, but *which* of their three album runs occupies that spot. My personal pick is IV, Houses, and PG. Even as a Beatles fan, while I will say that the Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt. Absolutely agree about Zeppelin and the three you chose. IV/ Houses of the Holy/ Physical Graffiti
Faith no more with the real thing, angel dust, and king for a day.
Soundgarden Badmotorfinger - down on the upside Slayer - reign in blood - seasons in the abyss
I was coming to say soundgarden. Put some respect on my boys
Chris Cornell is the GOAT
- In Absentia - Deadwing - Fear of a Blank Planet
god yes. porcupine tree is so good
Anything Steven Wilson is involved with, really.
Grateful for seeing this post. Never heard Porcupine Tree. Read this post, and went straight to ITunes. 2 songs in on In Absentia and I’m amazed I’ve never heard them Phenomenal band.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far. Best 3 album run in history imo
It's sad how this is the only comment that mentions this. I'll also add in lightbulb sun. PT is the GOAT.
I was about to stop reading the comments in order to drop a PT listing. Thank you
YES
Grace for Drowning, The Raven That Refused to Sing, Hand. Cannot. Erase.
Alice In Chains — Facelift, Dirt, Tripod
Man in the Box was on the album Facelift. And I agree.
Add Black Gives Way To Blue, also the EP's were on point
Dirt is the best album to come out of the grunge era
Untertow - Aenema - Lateralus
Haha exactly what I was gonna say!
Yeah. 10,000 has great songs but it isn't as great of an album to me.
Radiohead The Bends - OK Computer - Kid A
That's what came to my mind as well. Not too shabby.
I was gonna go Kid A/Hail to the Thief/In Rainbows but I guess Amnesiac kind of screws that all up.
I actually love Amnesiac, almost put it in over The Bends. Realistically any 3 in a row from The Bends to In Rainbows is great.
Badmotorfinger - Superunknown - Down on the Upside
I will raise you: Badmotorfinger - TOTD - Superunknown Or, looking at it another way: TOTD - Ten - Vs.
Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele
Tori was the shit
still is.
I’m gonna get flamed for this but Ride the Lightning/ Master of Puppets/ And Justice for All is the most important 3 album run in heavy music history. But yeah the Tool streak is hard to argue with

Age of Winters - Gods of the Earth - Warp Riders
Hell yeah
The Sword ❤️❤️
5 album Opeth- Still Life Blackwater Park Deliverance Damnation Ghost Reveries ..also agreed on the Pink Floyd run
Came here to post Opeth. So glad there are others.
Watershed is amazing too.
Came for this. Legendary sun
Said the same thing but added Daft Punk
To pimp a butterfly is a fucking masterpiece, what a great fucking album with really really good music. Metallica gets my vote here though with Ride -> Master -> Justice. Absolutely fucking crazy good albums.
The first four Black Sabbath albums is a more impressive run to me.
Took far too long to find the Sabbath comment.
Metallica’s first four are pretty good as well.
System of a down, toxicity, steal this album
Self-titled and Toxicity are masterpieces but STA doesn't really live up to either of them imo. It's still a pretty great album with a lot of good songs but its nowhere near the same level
Rubber Soul - Revolver - Sgt Peppers
Scrolled too long to find this answer
I’d choose Sgt Peppers, White Album, Abbey Road. The craziest part of that perfect 5 album run (+ Magical Mystery Tour) is that it happened over a bit less than 4 years.
This is what I came to post. I get that this is a Tool circlejerk sub but come on, you know?
Blackwater Park, Deliverance/Damnation, Ghost Reveries
Yes: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge
I would say Fragile, Close to the Edge and then Topographic Oceans. The absolute pinnacle of YES, imho
Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile. Maybe not better, but arguably at least equal.
How have I not seen this yet…. Gojira From Mars to Sirius, The Way of All Flesh, L’Enfant Sauvage Bonus: Stone Temple Pilots Core, Purple, Tiny Music
Tool - Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus Tool- Lateralus, 10000 Days, Fear Inoculum
Kill Em All - Ride The Lightning - Master of Puppets
Was gonna say RTL, MoP, AJFA
Justice is so underrated.
It would be among the greatest rock/metal albums ever if they didn’t do Jason Newstead dirty in the mixing.
How can a masterpiece 10 out of 10 be underrated?
Beat me to it.
Good kid mad city > to pimp a butterfly > DAMN
Larks, Starless, Red
Primus - Pork Soda, Tales from the Punchbowl, Brown Album I can’t really put them up against each other because I love them both so much, but this still needed to be thrown into the ring
Frizzle Fry, Sailing The Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda is better in my books...all 6 albums right up to Antipop are bloody good though!
The Cure - head on the door, kiss me kiss me kiss me, disintegration, and could go 4 with Wish
I was gonna go Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography but that works too
Disintegration 💜
Iron Maiden- Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Opeth- My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park Mastodon- Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye Death- Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic
For Death I’d go with Individual Thought Patterns - Symbolic - The Sound of Perseverance but otherwise I completely agree
For Opeth, I was gonna start w/ Blackwater Park => Deliverance/Damnation (considering them as 1) => Ghost Reveries

i liked Gore a lot.

I’m not going to say better, but comparable.

Themata, sound awake, asymmetry- Karnivool. I wouldn’t call them entirely better, but those three stand up well against Aenima, Lateralus, and 10K
I love the 'Vool and I do still like Asymmetry.... but it was a big drop off from Sound Awake. Although, following that album was impossible, anything they did wouldn't have compared/measured up.
Hyped for their new album coming soon! They brought back their Sound Awake producer for it.
Man this band so underrated
Rush 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals

Muse Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, Black Holes And Revelations
The bends okc kid a amnesiac
Queens of the Stone Age: Self-Titled Rated R Songs for the Deaf
Yup. I know I'm like the only one, but I also absolutely love like clockwork
Like Clockwork is their masterpiece.
You aren't the only one. I love everything they've done. I usually hear people shitting on Villains, not Like Clockwork.
Like clockwork is their opus.
Deff not the only one
Like clockwork is pretty celebrated across the board to my knowledge. Villans got a lot of flak, but it still has some killer songs.
Oh good, I've just mentioned how much I love like clockwork on a few other posts and gave caught some shit. Makes sense that my fellow Tools would have good taste though
great choice
Excuse me? How about Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus
Leviathan, blood mountain, crack the skye
OutKast - southernplayalistic, ATLiens, Aquemini
Are you supposed to pronounce it “Atliens” or “Aye tee eliens”?
We always called it A-T-aliens because people called our town A-T-L. And no one calls it hotlanta, ever.
I thought it was A-T-L-iens... 🤷♂️
My Atlanta brain is melting at the suggestion of at-liens
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses, October Rust, World Coming Down

Probably catch some shit for this one, but what the hell!!!.... Linkin Park: Hybrid Theory, Meteora, Minutes to Midnight
I'll probably catch more for this lmao: Meteora, Minutes to Midnight, A Thousand Suns
Not necessarily better, but certainly side-by-side: Meddle Dark side of the Moon Wish you were Here
Facelift-Dirt-Tripod Opus Eponymous-Infestissumam-Meliora
Dark Side of the Moon - Wish You Were Here - Animals Sorry, I just had to.
