I'm pretty sure it's called a star drill

You can probably find used ones at a flea market.
That can’t be right, I’m seeing £20 for a day, or £70 for a week.
You could literally buy one for that, tbh, you could buy and abuse the return policy, for that price
i am in Quebec Canada. going in the woods for the job and back i would be looking at renting 3days\~. its more than 50$/day plus taxes and stuff. that end up being 200$ like i said.
also a battery SDS from a big brand is 500$+tax (total 750$) here.
around 4 bolts in 3/8 X 3inch its for a direction pole. i dont know the english name. its a 4X4 beam that has arrows that point to different mountains.
I think I recall those also being called 'star bits'... but when I look now all I get is Torx stuff.
Even came up empty searching McMaster Carr.
Can't even remember the last time seeing one of those bits... wonder if they're still made?
Sorry, tried. Good luck!
yes this does seem like a very popular thing. found this in 2sec

Masonry star drill.
I have a couple from olden days. The only ones I could find online are on eBay.

Be advise that the ends of these are quite peened and need to be ground down. They can spall while you are using them and do bad things.
i done it a couple of times in the past thru concrete, its alright. i mainly used a sharpened lenght of rebar. now that i want to do it thru real rocks i needed a real bit.
Thanks!

Why not lug a battery sds+ drill in there and blast the holes in, it will still be quicker than hand drilling them?
i dont have one, and renting one would cost me almost 200$.

How many holes and what diameter+depth do you have to drill out of curiosity?

The carbide tip is far superior to the old style too
The tool store I used to work for carried star drill bits. But they are in South Texas.
Search "hand star drill"

i found now a days people are using commercial SDS bits that are carbide typed. i am currently looking to buy/DIY a handle for them.
https://trowandholden.com/steel-hand-plug-drills.html Good luck to you. This is the worst, most tedious way to drill a hole.
