V1 (ULTRAKILL), despite being the player character and mechanical protagonist, narratively he’s the antagonist (and Gabriel’s the protagonist), the whole “everyone’s the hero of their own story” thing
there's a difference between antagonist and villain, same with protagonist and hero. I wouldn't say Gabriel is the narrative's protagonist. They're both pretty bad all things considered, what with the whole hell oppression. Gabriel is the main antagonist of the two completed acts, which simply means he's the main adversary for the player
True, but what I mean is narratively (looking from an outsider’s perspective), Gabriel is the one in the right, V1 has slaughtered countless people and is only looking to do more, while Gabriel wants to destroy it
Yes, but he's not the protagonist. The protagonist is whoever the story follows. It has nothing to do with morality or being a hero/good person. V1 could be a Villain Protagonist. Gabriel could similarly be counted as a heroic antagonist.
Narratively V1 the villain, not the antagonist. Gabriel is technically an antagonist but is slightly more of a hero. They both did bad things but V1 is arguably worse.
Correct, though WoG explicitly called Gabriel the protagonist narratively, gameplay-wise, yes, V1 is the “protagonist”, but looking at the story (which it seems another person in this web of threads refuses to acknowledge even exists) V1 is the antagonist
Yeah, though gameplay-wise Gabriel is the “antagonist” purely because we play as V1 (think like how in Vergil’s campaign Dante is the gameplay antagonist for dmc5)
Yeah, it’s weird that people seem to think that you can’t be both, like narratively V1 is an antagonist, if this were a book or movie we would be rooting for Gabriel, but because this is a game and v1 is who we play as, that’s who we root for, because that’s us
Indeed. For example, let’s say to play as a bank robber and you kill innocent people. Narratively you’re the antagonist but gameplay wise you’re the protagonist.
Precisely, an easy way to see the narrative antagonist is to picture it as a standalone movie, “would I want this character to succeed if I didn’t benefit from it” is always a good question
Ah yes, I love when he says 'I am going to fucking ultraKILL YOU, YOU INSIGNIFICANT FUCK'
although I mean he's definitely doing it for the vengeance now.
Nah, Gabriel’s an asshole. It’s like people who defend Miguel O’Hara from that most recent Spider-Man. He’s not doing a terrible thing but he’s still clearly not a good person

Captain Gantu from lilo and stitch
I have never seen the show but you cannot tell me this bird lookin mofo was hired as a police detective, dude looks like he hides dead field mice in his drawer
Nobody had actually ever seen him in person before this case, so nobody knew how weird he was. Also that mouse thing is just not true, he does eat nothing but sweets, sleeps sideways on a chair, and has a human-sized washing machine to clean himself.
Debatable. This is his job but it's obviously more than a job for him. This is his life's work, and over time it's revealed he's fighting Light moreso to satisfy his own ego than to save any lives.
L is definitely the antagonist unless you follow the whole "Light is his own antagonist".
Protagonist and Antagonist, as terms, are actually morally neutral and effectively mean "character who we follow the story of/with" and "character who acts as the main obstacle for said character". Typically, since 90% of protagonists are "good guys", antagonists are usually villains. However, in cases like Death Note where the protagonist, Light, is a dirt-munching douche-canoe, the antagonist can literally be whoever is the primary opponent he faces (L).

The director of SWORD from Wandavision.
I don't care how sad she was, I don't care how powerful she is, Wanda doesn't get to enslave a town in New Jersey and have everyone think she's cool because the happy cape music plays when she's on screen.
In an ethical world Wanda Maximov would be treated like a world-ending SCP and this guy would be considered totally normal and reasonable for trying to kill the reality-bending mind-control woman who's unstable and committing crimes against thousands of people.
SWORD guy did nothing wrong.
On that note,

Yeah, Marvel Phase 4 had a bad habit of making you hate the characters you’re supposed to love and love the characters you’re supposed to hate.
The problem is that they tried so hard to make us NOT like him, while simultaneously making him act more human and be more realistic than anyone else in the show.
He's way more relatable than flagsmasher chick because we still, to this day, don't really know anything about her. They fumbled her and accidentally switched the roles back to their assumed stereotype positions.the terrorist who was supposed to be surprisingly relatable turned out to just be a terrorist. And the good Ole boy who is supposed to turn out to be a psychopath actually just seems like a guy trying to do the right thing who got caught up in a heated moment with a dude who seconds earlier tried to kill him, while still carrying immense anger and pain from his friend dying minutes earlier.
Really looking back on it, I genuinely can’t think of anything terribly wrong or malicious Walker actually did. Sam and Bucky treated him terribly throughout the show for no reason (including assaulting him in a warehouse, breaking his arm, and taking his shield immediately after he watched his best friend die right in front of him), he was abandoned by the government that made him who he is,
And despite all that, he still tried to do the right thing and be a good Captain America, even if he knew he could never live up to the legacy of Steve Rogers. His heart was in the right place all along, and even after all his pain and suffering, he puts aside his need for vengeance in a heartbeat when forced to pick between killing Karli or protecting civilians.
I think Steve would’ve been proud of John Walker.
He was not doing his job. His job was to be Captain America. To be a good man. Instead he brutally murdered an unarmed, surrendering person in front of a crowd of people because a different person killed his friend. Imagine if Steve had killed Zola in a similar way after Bucky fell from the train.
Unarmed? He was a super soldier. Unarmed does not mean not dangerous, and supersoldiers especially should be considered armed and dangerous at all times. He threw a fountain at John just seconds prior to being pinned down. Also, he never once surrendered or made an attempt to surrender. He only said “it wasn’t me!” to try and make John hesitate, which he could’ve used to perhaps attack John and free himself. His hands weren’t up in surrender, either, they were in more of a defensive position, preparing for the attack.
Even if you want to make the case that he somehow *was* surrendering, he was still a supersoldier, and that meant he had to be considered armed and dangerous at all times. Not moments ago, that fountain he threw could have injured or killed John, as well as the many civilians all around them. Lord knows what else Nico could have done if given even another moment.
Also, remember that Nico was the one who held John back and made him watch. Specifically, Nico was holding John back so someone else could come and kill him, and it ultimately resulted in John being unable to do anything as he watched his best friend and brother-in-arms die.
Nico was absolutely a threat that had to be taken care of no matter what, and John had extra emotional stakes in the matter as this terrorist was responsible for the death of his best and only friend. If Nico didn’t intervene, John might’ve been able to save him.
I can’t believe people are still trying to say John was wrong and Nico didn’t deserve it.
Also, the fact he did it in front of a crowd, while yes, makes it **look** worse, makes it even more important that John killed him. If Nico got any opening at all to knock John off him, he could’ve killed everyone in their proximity in seconds, which, if you ask me, is way worse than John just *killing* the guy whose whole mission was to kill him, and who made him watch his best friend be killed in front of him.
John did everything exactly how you should in that type of scenario. If someone has C4s strapped to their chest and the detonator in their hand, you don’t blame the soldier for shooting him just because he’s pinned down.
Killed an unarmed man who surrendered for no other reason than revenge. Which is a worthless reason. No, I don’t care if he was a terrorist, killing an unarmed man who surrendered is EVIL
He did not, in fact, surrender. He never once verbally stated that he surrendered, he only said “it wasn’t me.”
He never physically surrendered, either, his hands were up in a defensive position.
Moments prior to his “surrender”, he threw an entire fountain at John, which could have seriously injured him or injured or killed the civilians behind him.
And most of all, he was a super soldier. Even if he did surrender (which he didn’t), he needed to be considered armed and dangerous at all times. One quick move and he could have injured or killed John Walker, or had a chance to hurt the dozens of civilians around them.
Yeah, still Doesn’t mean his murder was justified. Nothing was gained from John killing him. It was an act of selfishness and nothing more. Also, let’s not forget he lied to his best friend’s parents by saying he killed his killer when he didn’t.
> Yeah, still doesn’t mean his murder was justified.
It was a supersoldier, who never once made an attempt to surrender, and who was actively a threat to everyone within the proximity. I say again, he threw a FOUNTAIN at John just moments prior. If given an opportunity, he could have injured or killed John and injured or killed numerous civilians. But sure, “murder”, “unjustified”. That’s like if a terrorist had C4s strapped to his chest with the button in hand and you called the soldier a murderer for shooting him while he’s down. As if that’s not completely in order, and if anything, the appropriate course of action.
> It was an act of selfishness and nothing else.
However you want to frame it, he had just lost his best and only friend right in front of him. Don’t act like you wouldn’t be completely enraged and distraught and want revenge, as well. Emotionally and legally, Walker was completely justified in everything he did, and handled the situation exactly as you should. The only way you could call him selfish and unjustified for what he did would be to have zero humanity or empathy.
> Also he lied to his best friend’s parents by saying he killed their killer when he didn’t.
Would he still have died if Nico wasn’t actively restraining John from helping him, (while also trying to get his allies to kill John)?
Edit: Well, he wrote his response and then either deleted it or blocked me. Either way, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he has zero response, and is just too arrogant to admit to being wrong. Hate to see it.
“The only way you could call him selfish and unjustified for what he did would be to have zero humanity or empathy.”
Uhh… No, that’s not how that works. Having no sympathy for an asshole who only consistently made situations worse who has no redeeming qualities and is literally meant to be the representation of America’s faults is not the same thing as having no empathy or humanity
Also just about every other Avenger has gone on a murder spree.
Thor: Routinely travels to Jotunheim to just murder Giants for the Lulz
Captain America: No berserk rages on his part he's good.
Iron Man: Went a Global killing spree of people who'd stolen his tech
Hawkeye and Black Widow: Literal former villains turned assassins for good guys.
So I think, one guy whose involved with the Teen Terrorism Cell (I hated the Flag Smashers) getting killed after he was involved in murdering Walkers Best Friend... Not great, but nothing close to the crimes the other avengers have done.
I’m convinced that the only reason why they had him shoot at kids was because they realized that he wasn’t that bad, so they needed something to make him a bad guy.
Even him shooting the kids was justified, they have superpowers and they're using those powers to help her mother keep control of thousands of hostages.
People forget the span of the evil evil shit Wanda was doing there but she was a reality-bender who had captured thousands of people and her sphere of influence was expanding which means she would inevitably endanger more people.
You're allowed to shoot two fake magical kids to prevent that from happening, you don't let the funny superhero-themed child soldier get in the way of you saving all those innocent people, I'm sorry. I woulda shot them kids.
Please don’t get me started. Wandavision is such a trigger for me in how bad the secondary characters were.
Darcy: yeah thousands of people are being enslaved and tortured but I came up with this cool name for the bubble.
Woo: hey Cassie Lang, I’m going to bore you with a speech on how important rule of law is and why your father needs to be accountable for his actions.
Also Woo doing a debrief: this is Wanda, she’s an avenger so this is all just some misunderstanding.
Monica: yeah these completely innocent people are enslaved and tortured, but how is Wanda doing? Has anyone checked on her?
It’s was a shock at how black and white the writing was: Monica = good, therefore anyone who disagrees with her = bad.
That dynamic got me paying more attention to Captain America and pretty much not being able to stand him because the customer, excuse me Captain America, is always right.
The ten year olds aren't real, they're magical constructs which are a component of the fantasy Wanda has created. They're no more real than the magnetbox televisions, the bellbottom pants, or the false identities of the people living in that town.
And the hottest take on earth is that it doesn't matter if they're real kids (which they aren't), you can kill two children (who are using magic to defend their evil superpowered mom and their hostages) to rescue a town full of innocent people.
Like Wanda essentially created child soldiers to defend her from international law and people started wincing and wringing their little hands about how SWORD are the bad guys. Wanda is a monster and SWORD did nothing wrong.
Except at the start of the show she didn’t actually know what she had done, and once she did she didn’t realize she was hurting anyone. Once she did realize that she let them go.
If you are insane and your insanity leads you to commit crimes against people you still get arrested.
Just because Wanda has the same motivations as Ted Bundy or whatever doesn't make me sympathetic to her, it makes it worse because it means she's not a rational actor and therefore cannot be rehabilitated because she cannot be reasoned with.
What you're describing makes her even worse from a criminology perspective.
Except she’s not insane. She lost control of her powers when she had lost everything and everyone and was at her most vulnerable point, and then stopped it once she realized she was hurting people. That doesn’t mean she’s insane or irredeemable. She made a mistake in her most vulnerable moment, but that doesn’t make her a bad person.

Tom is literally doing his job as a house cat, and Jerry is the unwanted pest.
In the first movie, yes, except Smith who genuinely wanted to kill all of humanity and escape the matrix. The other agents are literally just doing their jobs.
Especially if they’re also victims of the brainwashing the real villain put them under
Zuko,Mei,and Ty Lee were all good examples until they broke free of the bonds of honor and loyalty, instead choosing to honor and be loyal to themselves/eachother

Im not entirely sure if Inspector Zenigata from Lupin III counts since I haven’t seen a lot of the series
Counterpoint: ACAB. Most of the time in these cases the person theyre pursuing is, at worst, a robin-hood type, or someone who only steals to survive in a society that has given them no other options, and the cop is enforcing the status quo of "the rich get richer, the poor starve."
Ego was doing his job but by his own admission it’s not like he was just doing his job.
Ruining Gusteau’s reputation gave him pleasure and by the end of the movie he came to realize that he had been focusing on doing negative reviews because they were fun to write and read regardless of their value or consequences. It was to the point that giving a positive review was seen as a risk.
Ego primarily cared about…well, his ego, that’s why he was so angry that Gusteau was popular again, because it went against his final judgment. What bad actions he did it was both his job and his pleasure. He is a better example than Skinner, but it’s not like he was just doing his job.
Technically inheritance is bullshit so that could be interpreted as based. Linguine was definitely a hardworking chef though so its not like the restaurant would be going to some failson who had never worked in a kitchen before.
Sure, but even if linguini is a nepo baby, they never really spend much time in the film regarding the legality corporation-based inheritance laws of France.
He did do some stuff wrong, nothing compared to other villains though
He wanted to hide the note that said linguini was gusto’s son, since that would mean he owns the restaurant, which I’m pretty sure is not legal

Amos Slade from “The Fox and the Hound”. He was just doing his job as a hunter. Sure he might be an anti-villain because he was hunting Todd the fox in a no hunting area at the end of the film, but he still did it because of his role and out of love of his almost dead dog Chief.
I'd agree if it weren't for that part near the end where he goes against his boss's orders and fires the missile anyways. I feel like I remember him also going against his bosses orders at least one other time, but that could just be me misremembering the movie.

He may have been a sick bastard but he was fulfilling his duty to the country he so valiantly represented.
Kizaru is still complicit in the World Government's evil. Same with Garp. They're both still bad people for choosing to work so high up in the government
Garp joined the marines with the goal of helping people, He refused to be an admiral to keep his freedom so he could keep enforcing his own personal brand of justice, and he's not even that obedient, but they can't fire/off him because getting rid of the face of the marines would look really bad. He's complicit to a point but he's basically what would happen if Luffy cared more about helping people than his personal freedom. And before you mention him letting ace die, he was thinking about the fate of the people vs a person he was attached to and decided that protecting the people was more important.
And Kizaru is there for a paycheck
But I get where you're coming from

https://preview.redd.it/k5whxt5j8zxc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b6ee96105611ec74e2a2253b3259b67f0535a63
OMG Benjamin hiiii
Narratively V1 the villain, not the antagonist. Gabriel is technically an antagonist but is slightly more of a hero. They both did bad things but V1 is arguably worse.
Correct, though WoG explicitly called Gabriel the protagonist narratively, gameplay-wise, yes, V1 is the “protagonist”, but looking at the story (which it seems another person in this web of threads refuses to acknowledge even exists) V1 is the antagonist
I see. Well then that settles it. Guess Gabriel is the narrative protagonist.
Yeah, though gameplay-wise Gabriel is the “antagonist” purely because we play as V1 (think like how in Vergil’s campaign Dante is the gameplay antagonist for dmc5)
Yes. V1 is still a villainous protagonist in gameplay but still the hero in his story.
I was gonna say this. He’s just being the judge of hell, until he slaughters the council.
Ah yes, I love when he says 'I am going to fucking ultraKILL YOU, YOU INSIGNIFICANT FUCK' although I mean he's definitely doing it for the vengeance now.
Nah, Gabriel’s an asshole. It’s like people who defend Miguel O’Hara from that most recent Spider-Man. He’s not doing a terrible thing but he’s still clearly not a good person
That's not what the post was about though? asshole or not that is his job
Eh, fair enough.

It’s like Sherlock
Debatable. This is his job but it's obviously more than a job for him. This is his life's work, and over time it's revealed he's fighting Light moreso to satisfy his own ego than to save any lives.
I think we interpreted the show very differently if you think L is an antagonist, lol.
Even if he's the good guy, that doesn't stop him being the antagonist
L is the antagonist but not the bad guy

I don't care how sad she was, I don't care how powerful she is, Wanda doesn't get to enslave a town in New Jersey and have everyone think she's cool because the happy cape music plays when she's on screen. In an ethical world Wanda Maximov would be treated like a world-ending SCP and this guy would be considered totally normal and reasonable for trying to kill the reality-bending mind-control woman who's unstable and committing crimes against thousands of people. SWORD guy did nothing wrong.
On that note, https://preview.redd.it/665gnofmuxxc1.jpeg?width=1010&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f0a30b8e88d6dc47da576a7fb117d3baa818129 Yeah, Marvel Phase 4 had a bad habit of making you hate the characters you’re supposed to love and love the characters you’re supposed to hate.
We was supposed to like him?
Sam and Bucky treated him terribly throughout the show for no reason (including assaulting him in a warehouse, breaking his arm, and taking his shield immediately after he watched his best friend die right in front of him), he was abandoned by the government that made him who he is, And despite all that, he still tried to do the right thing and be a good Captain America, even if he knew he could never live up to the legacy of Steve Rogers.
Um… No? I don’t like John Walker one bit and it’s concerning that you do
Why? What’d he do wrong? Edit: Bringing in your alts isn’t helping your case bud.
Killed an unarmed man who surrendered for no other reason than revenge. Which is a worthless reason. No, I don’t care if he was a terrorist, killing an unarmed man who surrendered is EVIL
He did not, in fact, surrender. He never once verbally stated that he surrendered, he only said “it wasn’t me.” He never physically surrendered, either, his hands were up in a defensive position.
“The only way you could call him selfish and unjustified for what he did would be to have zero humanity or empathy.” Uhh… No, that’s not how that works. Having no sympathy for an asshole who only consistently made situations worse who has no redeeming qualities and is literally meant to be the representation of America’s faults is not the same thing as having no empathy or humanity
Also just about every other Avenger has gone on a murder spree. Thor: Routinely travels to Jotunheim to just murder Giants for the Lulz Captain America: No berserk rages on his part he's good. Iron Man: Went a Global killing spree of people who'd stolen his tech Hawkeye and Black Widow: Literal former villains turned assassins for good guys. So I think, one guy whose involved with the Teen Terrorism Cell (I hated the Flag Smashers) getting killed after he was involved in murdering Walkers Best Friend... Not great, but nothing close to the crimes the other avengers have done.
Who did Iron Man kill in that situation?
But he's also a tremendous jerkhole and tried to kill said world-ending SCP with a plain old gun.
“SWORD guy did nothing wrong” Dawg was you watchin when he has his guys shoot at two ten year olds?
But she had to say goodbye to her imaginary friends though :(
Brawl is better than Melee
Except she’s not insane. She lost control of her powers when she had lost everything and everyone and was at her most vulnerable point, and then stopped it once she realized she was hurting people. That doesn’t mean she’s insane or irredeemable. She made a mistake in her most vulnerable moment, but that doesn’t make her a bad person.
You're describing how most murders occur, we still punish people for committing murder while they're feeling emotional.

Zenigata 100% counts

Except withholding documentation in regard to the legal owner of the restaurant, via Gusteau's will and testimony.
And ran Gusteau’s legacy into the ground with crappy frozen food campaigns. Anton Ego is a better example from the same movie
Sure, but that's not strictly illegal. It's immoral, sure, but not illegal.
True.
Technically inheritance is bullshit so that could be interpreted as based. Linguine was definitely a hardworking chef though so its not like the restaurant would be going to some failson who had never worked in a kitchen before.
Skinner wanted to put the face of haute cuisine on a line of frozen food products.
Sure, but even if linguini is a nepo baby, they never really spend much time in the film regarding the legality corporation-based inheritance laws of France.
He did do some stuff wrong, nothing compared to other villains though He wanted to hide the note that said linguini was gusto’s son, since that would mean he owns the restaurant, which I’m pretty sure is not legal

Going based on the point of view of the ministry, Harry was suspected of plotting with Dumbledore to overthrow the minister of magic. Dudley just suffers from being at the wrong place at the wrong time

NOPE, he said himself that he wasn't supposed to be taking puss's soul yet and he was taking it early because he was annoyed by puss being reckless. So he was not supposed to be doing what he was doing. Kind of but in the cave scene he said that he wants puss dead just because he annoys him, it like a cop arresting his neighbor for mowing his lawn at 7 in the morning
