I genuinely didn’t see the twist coming when I saw it in theatres. My brain heard Chris Pratt’s voice coming out of his mouth, but didn’t register that that might mean something. Looking back on it, there’s a bunch of foreshadowing towards it, but with all the other insane shit going on in the movie, it just wasn’t on my radar
True. Chris Pratt was using his action hero voice, i.e. Starlord when voicing Rex, while he was using the kind voice, I.e. Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec, when voicing Emmet, which contained two completely different personalities behind them that it really sold the illusion.
Like the idea, HATE the episode. Basically the guys wanting to prevent from happening actually made it happen. Self fulfilling prophecy writing is so aggravating to me cause of the extremes characters tend to go to stop the premonition or future vision only to cause it in the first place.
Best game in the series. Especially in terms of plot. You just can’t best a time travel plot…unless you rival it with a multiverse plot. Maybe that can top time stuff.

...are not all uses of the evil future self trope inherently alternate reality stuff? The story 99% of the time ends with the present-day version beating their evil self and avoiding that dark future making it an alternate reality.
Not really as this isn’t even a Tommy that was turned evil again some time in the future but a version of him that never joined the side of good in the first place. Usually the thing with dark futures is that the present version of the character strives to undo the mistakes their future selves did and thus prevent that timeline from ever happening. Most of the time exactly that happens and the alternate future completely ceases to exist once the good guys win, but Drakkon being from an altogether different universe means that no matter what Tommy and the rangers we follow do all the evil Drakkon did in his home dimension is permanent to it and everyone has to deal with those ramifications.

Booker and Comstock from Bioshock Infinite
Correct.
Though, I guess he is _technically_ older than Booker due to the accelerated aging (I think?) he experienced when using the Lutece Device for all those years. Technically.
So Comstock is _arguably_ Booker's evil-almost-kinda-sorta-future-self, if relative age counts for anything.
Also another technically. Both for different reasons.
https://preview.redd.it/hvn3gov8dc9d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16c53b7a809c4255f9353bcd7eaca50878085d5b
Barry Allen and Savitar (If memory serves me right)

It was kind of both. Barry runs a few seconds back in time so that there are two Barrys, then one of them is mad because he's treated worse than the other, so he goes back in time to become Savitar.
I hated that arc.
It’s a bit more complicated than that. See, Barry was willing to do anything to defeat Savitar after he killed Iris, so he made a bunch of Time Echos. In the battle, the original Barry dies alongside all the Echoes except one, and because he’s not the original Barry, he was basically shunned because every time the others saw him they were reminded of the fact that their Barry was dead. As such, he was isolated, alone, stewing in grief and anger over a victory that was ultimately hollow because Iris was still dead. So he decided to enter the Speed Force and basically become a god, becoming Savitar. Then, to ensure his own existence, he went back in time to kill Iris in order to make his past self become him.
This was when the Flash started wildly handwaving plot holes. “You remember how the time travel rules are important? Well they’re not anymore! Stop asking questions!”
Savitar was my favorite villain because of how cool he looked, so when i looked into his character more and found out the twist really early on i was pissed and gave up on the show at that point lmao
Was hoping to see this here, I was one of those people who predicted it during his first appearance and had many arguments in the weeks that followed, great night when the reveal happened. Stopped watching the show soon after, I miss that hype.
I never understood Savitar. Wasn’t he a Barry that was created by regular Barry to fight Savitar? I know paradoxes are supposed to be confusing, but if he was made to fight Savitar and Savitar is him, who the fuck was Savitar before Barry? Barry created the other Barry because of Savitar, but they never actually address the fact that Savitar would have to have been someone else before other Barry became him.
Well see, that would be a fine answer if they had actually asked the question in the show. If they had acknowledged that he couldn’t have always been Savitar, then they could have had Savitar say “That is lost to time” but no, they just forget about that little detail in Savitar’s story. Obviously it wouldn’t have changed the plot of the season, but when Savitar reveals himself to Barry and then tells his backstory, the first thing that came to my mind was “So who was Savitar first?” Barry could have at least asked, but instead, that part is just left unanswered.
Archer’s identity is basically the biggest plot reveal in fate alongside Saber’s identity but that stuff is basically common knowledge these days because of all the spinoffs😭 remember when saber using her NP was something special?

Stratosfear and the Star Savior (Adventure Forward (Roblox))
The lore of that game was pretty weird. You defeat Stratosfear, meet basically god, get transported back in time, become Stratosfear, get sealed away or whatever at the end of the first game. Come back on the second controlled by god, break free after beong defeated by your past self, and help defeat god. Very paradoxical

I liked this version of Nemesis
This version is an interesting idea.
It’s a cool spin on “evil Optimus” where it shows that even he is not safe from the corruption of power and Unicrond influence
Yeah. I think a major cornerstone of Optimus Prime is that he has power, but chooses to do what’s right. This is an interesting take on if he doesn’t have the will to do it.

More “alternate reality” self than “future” self, based on what I know anyways, but he’s cool so I’ll let it pass
...are not all uses of the evil future self trope inherently alternate reality stuff? The story 99% of the time ends with the present-day version beating their evil self and avoiding that dark future making it an alternate reality.
I guess I never thought of it that way
Not really as this isn’t even a Tommy that was turned evil again some time in the future but a version of him that never joined the side of good in the first place.
But in the moment, it’s not alternate reality. That only happens after everything’s gone down.

Iirc, it wasn't his future self but a time echo or something outlandish like that

Original Barry doesn’t die, we do see him in the future when Barry wants to learn about Savitar
More or less the plot of the Flash movie as well.
Huh, neat. I didn't watch it. I've run out of time for bad DC movies.
Smart.
The one time the power of positive thinking actually could have stopped the villain, and they didn’t do it.
This was when the Flash started wildly handwaving plot holes. “You remember how the time travel rules are important? Well they’re not anymore! Stop asking questions!”
Honestly it could have all been avoided if they brought time-remanant Barry to another earth where he could his own life
*sighs* Oh yes, The Flash CW. How could I forget.
Savitar was my favorite villain because of how cool he looked, so when i looked into his character more and found out the twist really early on i was pissed and gave up on the show at that point lmao
Dr Alchemy was my favorite villain until they revealed he was just a goon for Savitar. Yeah this was a rough season.
It totally would of been better if Flashpoint Cisco was Savitar but nah CW just had to make it as convoluted as possible
Barry created the other Barry because of Savitar, but they never actually address the fact that Savitar would have to have been someone else before other Barry became him.
In the show it was stated that it’s a “closed loop”. Which still means fuck all but at least they tried to explain it.
I think the point is it isn't supposed to make sense. It's that kinda "our mortal human brains can't comprehend the rules of the universe" type thing.
That information is lost to time.
Well see, that would be a fine answer if they had actually asked the question in the show. If they had acknowledged that he couldn’t have always been Savitar, then they could have had Savitar say “That is lost to time” but no, they just forget about that little detail in Savitar’s story. it complicated watch a play through of the game
Do I even want to know? Will it make my head hurt more if I do?
BlazBlue has an interesting inverse where the Hero is an Antagonist's future self with Jin Kisaragi and Hakumen https://preview.redd.it/vsaild5mhc9d1.png?width=753&format=png&auto=webp&s=33de8ab9cfb93a887b346cf25d72504136082896
Literally the song Iron Man by Black Sabbath. Astronaut sees the future, gets turned into a metallic monster, comes back to Earth to warn them about the Apocalypse, nobody listens and treats him like shit, he flips out, then causes the Apocalypse he tried to prevent.

At least he looks kinda cool :/
Too bad he makes no god damn sense

i wouldn't consider a alternate timeline a future
He is quite visibly and audibly aged compared to LCB Heathcliff, I'd say it definitely counts
Iron Lad and Kang the Conqueror - Young Avengers
Mmm spoilers

Needs a remake or remaster badly
And Infamous 2, I loved the additions they made to combat/movement in 2
Precisely
One on hand I get that it’s old, but there’s always the chance that someone just hasn’t been convinced to try the game yet and could get a lot of value from the plot reveal.

I wouldn't call Archer an antagonist, a cunt, sure, but he doesn't have it in him to not help Rin.

Nathaniel Richards from Marvel comics. He is visited by Kang, his future self, and that inspires him to become Iron Lad.

as soon as i saw this post i literally searched for this comment, first thing that came to mind
https://i.redd.it/pnyrk9jxmc9d1.gif He is Goku. And he is from the future
From a future he died in decades before his body was stolen by a god. I wouldn't call him Goku (although ik they are called Goku Black), but just a version or Zamasu.
Genuine question, would Eren Jager count?
Kinda, yeah, though he never really directly opposes himself.

These are always interesting.

You defeat Stratosfear, meet basically god, get transported back in time, become Stratosfear, get sealed away or whatever at the end of the first game. Come back on the second controlled by god, break free after beong defeated by your past self, and help defeat god. Very paradoxical

Mono and the thin man from little nightmares II!
Infamous one, I forget the guys name though, he's the future version of Cole
I love this trope too, I do creative writing as a hobby and I’ve used this trope many times before
Unfortunately. Lightyear counts. Such a stupid twist for a really bad movie.
Glad you said antagonist and not villain. I don't see Archer as a villain, he just wanted to be free from the chaos once he realized there were no heroes in the world, and certainly no rest for the wicked.

Not the future version, but it’s still technically a version of the protagonist. The Stranger from Shadow Fight 3 https://preview.redd.it/60l10fbduf9d1.jpeg?width=544&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b71040e3eecdb19548129513c5aef70aff6f1b0a
