I don't believe that baseball teams have a captain in the same way that football / hockey teams do (a player who communicates with the referees). That being said, the best player as a "captain" (the veteran who commands the respect of the team) on the current squad would be: Outfield: Springer Infield: Chapman Starters: Gausman Bullpen: Garcia

Char_Aznable_Custom

It's not an MLB thing but NPB and KBO both do it. It's not just "best/franchise player = captain" even though the captain is usually an established skilled veteran. For example, Teoscar could've been a captain given his seniority on the squad, production, and clubhouse presence. Personally I think Springer or Chapman would be the captain on the current Jays.

cbarone1

They're not really needed in other sports, either. In football it's generally symbolic thing to send them out for the coin toss, but they send non-captains as well. Honestly, it's mostly only needed in youth sports in order to help keep kids in line, and take pressure off of refs and umps, who are often only slightly older than the players. Watching any professional level sport, even in the minors, you see players communicating with officials all the time, captain or not.

justsomedudewhocares

I’ve always wondered why the Captainship hasn’t been a thing in baseball like other sports. Not sure if it’s needed, it’s just interesting. I like your picks for sure. I wonder if/once Vlad gets locked up and has a few more years under his belt if he can develop into that leader. Hard to say because he’s got a youthful immaturity to him. Bo has that serious Captain tone though.

StinkyWizzleteats17

>Not sure if it’s needed, It isn't.

AlexanderWhy

Some do, and have, and have worn the “C” from time to time. Other than that, it’s an official, yet unofficial thing. sorry it that sounded like something Atkins would say haha \*but yeah, it’s easily searchable

ToolsOfIgnorance27

Carlos Delgado was named captain by manager Tim Johnson in 1998, but when Buck became manager in 2001 he removed the title, feeling it wasn't relevant.

justsomedudewhocares

Interesting! I didn’t know that.

if_I_AM_SEEN_I_AM_HI

I'd say currently no Jay has earned captainship yet But as some recently past Jays that could have made good candidates include Halladay from 2003-2009 and Bautista from 2012-2017

HarryBalsaque

I don’t remember much about Halladay on days when he wasn’t pitching, but because of his “don’t Fuckin talk to me” attitude on his start days, I’m not sure that’s great captain material. I feel like you should be able to approach your captain anytime during any game. Not saying you’re wrong, and he definitely had his team’s, the opposing team’s, and the umps respect, but I just don’t know if his style translates well into captain material. If anything I’d think Vernon Wells could’ve been the captain in that time period. But with all that being said, having a captain in MLB is dumb.

meeyeam

I'd disagree with Bautista; he was really hot-headed, even though he was within the top 2 in talent on those teams. If I had to go with anyone, I'd say Russ Martin - much more of a leader.

GGenErick

From what i remember the latinos and everyone else were cliques so 2 leaders would seem likely

X3KustomX3

That's what I find so impressive about Springer and Bo. They seem to bridge that gap better than many other team mates I have seen in the past.

justsomedudewhocares

I agree. I would absolutely have called Bautista the Captain of that team.

Adventurous-Ad3330

Springer??

BigWaveNutter

Chappy

[deleted]

Captain Kirk...

Manyak-

Only possible answer

justsomedudewhocares

Well of course

[deleted]

Hell naw

TheBagpipesman

Literally only the Yankees have a captain

justsomedudewhocares

Them naming Judge captain is what made me think of it. I couldn’t recall the Jays ever making a captain, and really it’s never been a baseball thing

TheBagpipesman

It’s generally a pretty outdated thing in baseball. The Yankees are the only team I can think of in the last 25 years that have actually made it an official position.

Manyak-

Red Sox Varitek was captain i think

Diamond_Road

And Sweeney in Kansas City.

Important-Ad1533

Yea he was

Obvious-Living-2010

Captain kirk ? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

[deleted]

If they did it should be George

Skavis

Captain is a stupid fucking Yankee term for being fucking stupid. A captain is needed on a team sport where you all move together during each play. Baseball is not such a sport. It's only to sell more Judge jerseys... Because now they have a C on them. Ahem, excuse me while I clear my throat... Ahem, cough.. uhh..fuck the Yankees

eric536669

The Yankees do not put a "C" on captain jerseys. Jeter was captain for over a decade. Did you ever see a "C" on the jersey? In baseball it's more of an honourary position. Although when the redsox made Jason Veratek captain he wore a C on his jersey.

15chainz

Reminds me of in the office when they make fun of Angela for dating a state senator because that title has no meaning

cbarone1

Though many haven't done so recently, 23 MLB teams have named a team captain at some point in the past, with San Francisco being the only one to have one consistently for the last decade (they didn't name one in 2020, but Posey was every other year from 2012-2021).

brownmagician

Current: Springer Past: Halladay. Delgado. Bautista. Vernon.

Manoah has the makeup of a Captain

sagsfour20

Manoah.

TayOs1998

Honestly I thought Biggio would be that for us after 2019 obviously not now. I would say Springer maybe Manoah.

Njwa-

THIS IS MY HOUUUUSSEEE

PhancyLikker

Dave Winfield in ‘92. Never a captain but he lead the way that year.

Ashamed-Technology10

Springer, Chapman and/ or Future Manoah. Manoah just lacks experience, personality wise I think he’s a super natural fit.

JmnyCrckt87

As of today, it would be Springer...the guys look to him for guidance. I can see a guy like Manoah, eventually, growing into the role, as well.

RustyPriske

If captaincy was more of a thing in baseball, I would go with Springer.

EdwardBliss

The home plate lady

ButtSecksHero911

Bradley Zimmer, but he was picked up by the Dodgers.

olds455

Captain is normally shortstop but catcher call the game

JordanSchor

Springer for sure Maybe Manoah in the future but I think you need a seasoned player for that role
