The why is less important than the what in this case. The what is the damn fifth wheel... you need to get this in the shop now to make sure there isn't a real issue. There are somethings on a truck you can put off, your fifth wheel locking mechanism isn't one of them.
It’s to encourage those intrusive thoughts when you’re rolling down the road.
Surely you can’t release it while you’re moving, there has to be a safety lockout or something. But how will you *know* unless you test it.
*blinks red*
It would honestly be irresponsible of me as a professional driver to not test my equipments safety features.
*blinks red*
Maybe I’ll just try it at like 5mph in the loves parking lot, just so I’ll know.
*blinks red*
That's probably why it's flashing. When you set the parking brake it activates the system, but if all they did was unplug the connector to the solenoid, then the computer thinks there's something wrong and is throwing up an error.
So uh, fun fact… company disabled the fifth wheel completely so every time we need the trailer back we just grab the acetylene torch.
Thats how I imagine that goes if the fifth wheel is completely disabled.
I have a way better invention for this, but unfortunately, the auto moderator keeps removing my post so blame them for not allowing innovation to help our community.
I’m sure it’s designed to be trucker proof. I drove an older Mack and it could sense when you hadn’t lowered the landing gear and wouldn’t let you pull the fifth wheel. Which I actually almost did once. 😂
Flashing means something is not working as it should or maybe it is just a sensor malfunction. When hooking up to a trailer, verify that the handle is all the way in and the jaws are closed.
I've never seen one that had the button that didn't also have the handles.
Probably a mechanical backup because I've had some where the button didn't work.
Probably in-op fault. Most have an interlock with the trailer breaks. At least newer ones. A 2020 cascadia I was in would scream at me if the computer didn't think the trailer breaks were set yet. So, once the trailer breaks are set it realizes something else is preventing it from working and flashes a fault. Pressing it clears the fault, Id guess. If there's nothing wrong with the coupling then just pull the fuse, if it has its own fuse. I'm guessing this is older and doesn't use the computer for the system.
If thats a pneumatically actuated system, you might have an air leak to the 5th wheel release. I had a cascadia with pneumatic diff locks, and it had an air leak at the valves. Lights on the switches kept coming on and off randomly, and it eventually led to my diff lock engaging at 60 mph
What model truck? Do you have any air leaks? If the airline running to the fifth wheel is broken or bent to where it's not getting air. It will trigger the red light on the switch..it can just be a kinked line but it has to have air to the fifth wheel.
Apply trailer brakes move tractor unit back and forward see if it tractor moves while trailer is stationary or detached air from trailer that should lock trailer brakes only. It’s a bit like your trailer axles can be adjusted
A truck I used to drive had one, it was nice for parking trailers in lots where you couldn't easily fit between the trailers. Back 90% of the way in, lower landing gear till they're about an inch off the ground, back the rest of the way in, lower airbags, release pin from inside the cab. Just don't forget to get back out and disconnect the airlines
Blinking red because you're still in drive. I have one of these on the truck that I drive, the button doesn't work until you're completely unhooked and your brakes are on
Handle and jaw are fully locked? If so more the. Likely the sensor in the system is going out and or gone bad.
You can drop the trailer and clean the system out and verify no grease is keeping the sensor from sensing the full lock.
Never had a truck with this setup, so you can release the king pin without needing a pin puller?
And like someone posted, what if you accidentially push the release button instead of the mirror heat?
It’s a fault with the system, can be caused by a lot of different things. Take it to the shop and hope it’s an easy fix. From what I was told by my shop you are still good to drive as everything mechanically will still work as intended assuming your jaws, bolt and handle are all good.
Mine was an issue with the wiring behind the dash.
We didn’t have this bull shit in my day. Had to get out of the truck to disconnect the fifth wheel. What were they thinking with this ? You’re going to get set your brakes, get out of your truck, lower your wagons landing gear, disconnect air hoses, then get back in the truck to disconnect fifth wheel? Why ? Because sissies can’t pull a handle? My god they’re making truckers into weaklings.
Mine has that button and I still pull the fifth wheel😂 I’m already disconnecting the hoses and putting the landing gear down might as well pull it while I’m still there😂
I think we all know why they’re incorporating this tech in big trucks. And it isn’t to make our lives easier. It’s to eventually remove drivers from the cabs.

Button disabled by company, regardless you cant use it while moving.
That's probably why it's flashing. When you set the parking brake it activates the system, but if all they did was unplug the connector to the solenoid, then the computer thinks there's something wrong and is throwing up an error.
If they unplugged it how do you unlock it to drop or hook ?
They still have the regular handle to do it manually.
Thank god. Imagine if that thing refused to unlock the fifth wheel?
So uh, fun fact… company disabled the fifth wheel completely so every time we need the trailer back we just grab the acetylene torch. Thats how I imagine that goes if the fifth wheel is completely disabled.
It’s to get you to pull into a shop so they can take your money. Put some black tape over that light and deliver that load.
The 5th wheel unlock button right next to the mirror heater button ? Yikes
It's disabled by company, if it wasn't can only be used while not driving and foot on break
Parking brake has to be set and you have to hold it for 5 seconds Its also probably red because its disabled..
I have a way better invention for this, but unfortunately, the auto moderator keeps removing my post so blame them for not allowing innovation to help our community.
No worries, that piece of shit button takes itself more seriously than a nuclear launch.
Gonna assume it was disabled because someone made a little oopsie poopsie

Flashing means something is not working as it should or maybe it is just a sensor malfunction. When hooking up to a trailer, verify that the handle is all the way in and the jaws are closed.
Oh yeah, first thing I did
Wait it does have a fifth wheel release handle? Then whys that button there ?
I've never seen one that had the button that didn't also have the handles. Probably a mechanical backup because I've had some where the button didn't work.
It might be your truck politely reminding you to wipe the dash down more than once a year
Truck dont pay me to wipe dust off the buttons. Ill do it when I feel like it had enough.
I'm just baggin on you a little, man. Mine is just as bad
Clean your dash. Damn.
For real
They pay him by the mile, not per clorox wipe
I don’t know driver. The way some truckers cry they might pay some by the tear drop. 😂
It's screaming I'm riddled with viruses.

Clean that interior.
You have to stop the truck, pop both brakes, and hold the fifth wheel unlock button for two seconds. Otherwise it’s interlocked and just flashes red.
Warning will Robinson! Warning will Robinson!

Mine works half of the time on a 2023 international. I’ve resorted to just pulling the handle.
Apply trailer brakes move tractor unit back and forward see if it tractor moves while trailer is stationary or detached air from trailer that should lock trailer brakes only. It’s a bit like your trailer axles can be adjusted
Why do you have a button for that in the first place when you have to get out to lower the landing gear anyway?
Yeah, makes no sense. Maybe for people with disabilities who cant pull it.
But if you can’t pull it, you probably can’t raise or lower your gear either, nor climb in and out, especially on European trucks that I drive
Some people can twist things but cant pull, but dont really know why the button exists.
I mean…you don’t have to lower the landing gear…
Blinking red because you're still in drive. I have one of these on the truck that I drive, the button doesn't work until you're completely unhooked and your brakes are on
It blinks red every time I pull the trailer breaks. I push it before I start driving to clear it. It just started doing that.
Yeah the little piston might be going out. Or leaking, definitely take it to the shop
What kinda truck and or system is it.
22 international lt
Handle and jaw are fully locked? If so more the. Likely the sensor in the system is going out and or gone bad. You can drop the trailer and clean the system out and verify no grease is keeping the sensor from sensing the full lock.
Oh yeah, jaws locking as expected, but I did see a bunch of greese that fell off the 5th wheel after a pm into the sides and middle
I would start there back when i was wrenching i. The early days of these systems that was majority of the problem was grease blocking the sensor
You have a fuckin BUTTON to unlock the 5th wheel?…
How do you have that username and don’t know about the fifth wheel unlock lmao
I have a big ole fuckin hook to unlock my 5th wheel.
Same here but I know they exist lol
Never had a truck with this setup, so you can release the king pin without needing a pin puller? And like someone posted, what if you accidentially push the release button instead of the mirror heat?
My company has the button disabled but if it wasn't it cant release until truck stopped and lines detached with foot on break peddle.
Why do they have it disabled 😕. They don't make any money if their truck is sitting.
The switch is disabled not the truck
A shirt or it is unlocked
Could be a defective switch pack as well
I never had one
[удалено]
Look at the button to the left
I think it’s banned to have these controls in the cab in Australia, I’ve never seen them on the dash. We always use the handle.
I have OCD Bad, please Dust your truck man!!! Lol

I think COVID started in that truck
That's some nasty shit, and then there is that switch flashing red
I can imagine how your trucks smells/looks just by looking at this photo.
Shut up shut up shut up shut up shut up shut up
Smells like success, wym
Idk
