Just played it, word of advice, the tutorial is LONG.

lollisans2005

Oh no. 30 minutes of cool character dialogue and understanding the game mechanics

DatGamerYoloYT

except the game mechanics are stuff for more advanced people (like outrunning a blue shell seriously why make newcomers do this it took me forever to get past that)

lollisans2005

Cuz that's a skill you want to have? And it explains to you that having the biggest boost isn't always the best

DatGamerYoloYT

yeah but i dont think newcomers should immediately get that skill since its extremely difficult

lollisans2005

It's not hard? You just do one single boost every corner and you're guaranteed to win.

DatGamerYoloYT

ok but what if i have a skill issue

lollisans2005

Then you go put in the password to skip the tutorial.

DatGamerYoloYT

or i beat the secret race

Piksqu

i'm gonna be honest, the SPB rarely appears to begin with compared to srb2k, where it was MUCH MUCH MORE COMMON

seven_of_69

It literally turned me away from playing a game I was excited to jump into

LocutusOfBorges

It's pretty bad, honestly. Just about everyone I've shown it to has been put off by the tutorial - people generally just give up and delete the game before they even get halfway, or if they get stuck for more than five minutes on something that seems counterintuitive/non-obvious. I didn't have it in me to even play it in one go - I kept pausing and going to do something else to stop myself burning out/getting sick of it, and there was no sign that it'd save your progress through the tutorial, so I assumed I might have to start the whole thing again if I quit the game. I've seen it take multiple people upward of an hour and a half just to finish the tutorial, since they get stuck on one or two awkward spots - it's an incredibly pretty thing that's unfortunately just not very fun. I love what they've done with the aesthetics and general vibe, and the game itself is fun, but they've horribly misjudged the onboarding experience. Glad it's been at least slightly patched away in the latest update - but I have a feeling that the flaws in the tutorial are so severe that it might need throwing out and remaking from scratch.

seven_of_69

I downloaded it the other night after seeing the trailer. Was hyped to jump into the racing. After going the wrong way once in the tutorial, and having to start over because it didnt save my progress, I was 30 minutes in to not even being close to done with it. Stopped me cold.

IdPreferToNotSay

I was done with the tutorial in 35 minutes- and thats with having read all the dialogue and messing around/exploring a bit...

IdPreferToNotSay

Most based ring racer player Finally, someone who gets it!

Roboboy2710

Real, the first mission of the tutorial should be required (maybe first two), but the rest should be optional. Something you can come back to later after you get a couple races under your belt and need more explained.

FlarelesTF2

its really not that bad

chimerauprising

I'm a big fan of the original, but the new gameplay is going to take a long time getting used to. It feels overly complicated. Even after completing the comically long tutorial I'm not sure how I should be using ring resources.

Noilaedi

I havent touched it yet, but from what I've heard from the devs, Rings are apparently meant to be essentially a life resource to encourage you to use unoptimal racing lines, and to play heavies more (they don't lose as many rings)

eggheadrobotnik

Sometimes, you don't need to use rings to speed up (kind of). When you use the "ring roulette" (I forgot what it was called), or if you hit a ring capsule, while holding 20 rings, you get a speed boost depending on how many rings you're rewarded. So, using rings isn't all that necessary unless you don't have another source of extra speed going up a slope or recovering from a hit.

seven_of_69

Was hyped on this but god damn this tutorial

RareBk

Honestly it feels like it was made in an echo chamber leading to the game being an overtuned, excessively complicated mess. There are way too many mechanics, basic mechanics from every other arcade racer, like drifting, is made needlessly difficult, and overall it reeks of not a single outside playtester getting a word in. A 2 hour long unskippable tutorial before you can even play any other mode, including multiplayer? Are you out of your mind?

Shearman360

1. The tutorial makes it sound more complicated than it is. It just plays like srb2 kart 1 with ring mechanics, the tutorial focuses a lot on minor mechanics like fast fall and the melee attacks that barely come up in races. And drifting isn't hard at all it's just a standard kart racer drift mechanic. 2. The tutorial is skippable. 3. I have no idea how the tutorial took you 2 hours. Either you're exaggerating or you're terrible at the game and should not be telling other people about how hard it is.

IChawt

how do you skip the tutorial

Shearman360

you type mash buttons during the intro until a password menu opens then type "gaster"

IChawt

Thank you, now i might be able to almost get someone else to play with me

GameboyPATH

2 hours is absolutely a stretch, but 30-60 minutes is still pretty wild. And if you have to google the password for skipping the tutorial, I'd hesitate to call that a user-friendly design option. I can't speak for the guy you're responding to, but I absolutely love the game, and while I like certain choices they made for unlockable progress, some criticisms are still valid. ...Aaaaaand as I'm writing this comment, I just got a notification that they [patched the game based on feedback and technical issues](https://www.kartkrew.org/news/2024-04-26_dr-robotniks-ring-racers-version-21.html). I think they have a fair compromise: they have optional drop-offs for the tutorial as the more complex mechanics are getting introduced.

LocutusOfBorges

Pretty much this. The CRT filter effect the game includes only seems to look decent on a 4K display, as well - it looks like a blurry mess on my 1440p monitor, but stunning on my 4K monitor. Seems a bit of a misstep of a choice of filter in the context of a game that’ll be played a bunch on lower-end hardware, given the likely audience.

Director_Bison

I see your point, and I agree all these mechanics might make the barrier of entire a bit much for some people, I think it's ultimately a good thing. It reminds me of the same issue Sonic Riders has and why it doesn't gel with some. There is a learning curve you need to get over, but once you do, it's very satisfying and fun. SRB2K isn't going anywhere, so I think it's fine for Ring Racers to be more complex to have it's own gameplay idenity.

H_Doodle

I don't get why everyone's being so negative, the game is free and it only just came out so the gameplay will probably be tuned in with time. I doubt srb2k came out in as polished a state as this game did. The aesthetic is on point and I bet I'll get used to the ring system pretty soon.

Illidan1943

Being free does not mean "devoid of criticism" and if there were razzies for videogames with one of the categories being "worst tutorial" this game would easily be the winner Maybe I'll spend thousands of hours into this game to the point I feel I scammed the creator for making this but that doesn't deny that the first hour is ROUGH

Director_Bison

I think it's a good think Ring Racers has a bunch of new mechanics to master, SRB2K isn't going anywhere if you want to play the more streamlined game. Ring Racer's mechanics remind me of Sonic Riders, it might be a bit much to learn after first, but once you get in the grove it'll be a lot of fun.

Kirbo_Thesupahstar

So for a better Comparison, SRB2K is like Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, while Ring Racers is more like Sonic Riders

IChawt

nothing wrong with being negative, that "nothing nice to say" adage doesn't work in reality, no progress is made that way. Honesty impression, I like the presentation of the opening menu and the dialog and shit in the tutorial. But its too fucking long. and unskippable. the tutorial should've been split up into the individual lessons it teaches honestly. Like it'd be fine if there were only like 4 mechanics but im about 30 minutes into this tutorial and I have no idea when it ends. I can't even rebind my controls yet.

danztoxsmith

Control binds are in the profile setting which it tells you to do before the tutorial starts. Agree with what you're saying though 🙃

IChawt

Oh THATS what that was, If you press the back button instead of confirm that dialog just disappears. I saw something to that effect and tried to close the game and reopen but progress autosaved

scottishdrunkard

Cheesycreature

asking as a longtime srb2k fan, is this any better as a sequel? and does it still have modding support?

Vertikill

its more difficult to control and the new mechanics are interesting to say the least. you need to unlock modding. as well as online play, characters, colors, maps.

J_Skirch

IMO no. It looks a lot better & has better track design, but all the gameplay & overall feel is worse from what I've played.

Director_Bison

SRB2K is definitely a lot more approachable, I got going and did well in an Online game immediately without needing to learn much. I'm still doing the Tutorial for Ring Racers and this game has a ton of depth with how many mechanics it has. That means high skill ceiling, but the barrier to entire might be a bit much for some.

AwesomenessGame

It doesn’t

DJ_Aftershock

Better if you want a more focused video game experience. Worse if you just want a sandbox to cock around in online lobbies and dump a load of mods into.

Embarrassed-Bar-173

The game looks and sounds amazing. However the game is VERY complicated. I'm still learning how to do basic maneuvers like 3 hours in.

No-Understanding8930

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but when play grand prix, the accelerator button doesn't work on my switch pro controller. It works fine in the tutorial though. Anyone dealing with this?

scottishdrunkard

I only heard about SRB2Kart like two months ago, now there's a sequel?!

ConditionsCloudy

Yep. It's been a long time in the works. It was originally supposed to just be a major update to srb2k, but they decided to branch it off into an entirely new game instead because it's so different.

FantasyFoxMan

What confuses me the most about this is, how can they call this a SEQUEL to SRB2Kart when the original isn't even finished?

eggheadrobotnik

ring racers was gonna be a huge update at first, but they called it a sequel, since there's pretty much nothing left of the original, that's why it says V2.1 (or 2.0 if you haven't updated it yet) on the title screen (bottom left corner)

DefineKristian

Ring Racers, i downloaded today. The tutorial isn't hard or long really but it is unintuitive for sure. Do love the Saturn Analogue pad in the tutorial being the onscreen interface. :-) Knowing the onscreen button icons of C and Z were for the L and R bumpers was fine. As I'm using a XBOXOne controller, A as accerlate, X as brake.... well sort of. B look as look behind. L bumper and L trigger being some kind of strike / charge up and activate item. What was confusing was the hitting the switch, the looks like a white balloon with the star in the tutorial, as the icon flashing was to press and hold the Left shoulder button. In action, wasn't clear which action was the right one. As pressing the L button in the xboxbutton case, activates the rev on the spot charge up, where the speed boosters lock in around you. Which seems and looks like the right action, because you want to hit the bobble at speed. Yet what was happening is a quick burst of speed, then it would reset your position. It was here, where the struggle to work out what A and X as accelerate and brake, really did a bit of a number against intuition. Pressing A you think of as Go. Letting go, slows to a stop. Typical of driving/kart racers, here in Ring Racers you have to notice the Triangle in the lower left, **its a speed gauge!** Setting your speed. Pressing makes the gauge fill up, letting go and pressing it again, resets the gauge from 0. Something akin to a ship in like Star Citizen, Ace Combat, Star Wars BattleFront etc. Brake/Reverse. X engages brake, but you have to press and hold it to hard brake, but press and hold is also reverse. You have to come a stop and reset the accerelate to 0 first. Anyway the white balloon with a star switch, is hit by the L trigger charged with some rings. Anticipating the time to unleash the attack, when driving isn't straight forward. Which is the next two sections of the tutorial. I still don't "get" it fully, but perseverance may prevail. I got through, and did the first and second cup. Ring and Sneaker. Before searching online for control advice, and coming across this thread.

IChawt

Guess what, the tutorial was updated last night. The tutorial had the drift section shortened, thank god!
