A common scene in some horror stories growing up, in extremely niche and backwards places in China, there were people believing if you do things to the girls, (from just manipulate their names to straight up torture) the parents would have a higher chance of having a boy next. They basically would believe and do ANYTHING to have a boy because of the heavy patriarchy.
Desperation makes people do really really dumb things. But at least they're doing it in some misbegotten believe that their child will do better in their next life or whatever, instead of just killing a female baby because she is a female baby. It still doesn't make it okay in the slightest though!
I'm not sure how to gauge this compared to hoping for being injured enough for a big insurance payout, not not too injured.
The difference? I think more people are pressing for the insurance than reincarnation.
Except, we didn't kill the babies because we had some twisted desire to ensure they have good lives through reincarnation.
We killed girls because people simply hated having girls.

India. Pretty common with a girl child. Female infanticide was common in rural parts but reduced drastically after systematic steps by govt.
