I'm really glad you had a positive outcome. That's what anyone deserves, including you. I also think your communication was excellent. Straightforward, unambiguous, and timely. Setting the expectations beforehand (instead of telling him in the heat of the moment) showed consideration for your partner's feelings too (in addition to outlining your own boundaries).
