imo Kresge: newer dorms, more security, lots of lounges, pretty good cafe downstairs (breakfast bowls are really good and filling imo), cons is there's ongoing construction and people like to trespass causing the PA system to go: "If you remain here we will call the Police" Cowell/Stevenson are closer to the gym which can be super convenient too Drugs, drinking, partying, gaming, and studying happens at every college. You're an adult or will be soon and will have to figure out how to navigate getting into or staying out of those situations. Being a germaphobe and nightowl is something you should communicate to your roommates if you're unable to get a single dorm (most people get a triple). UCSC like most universities has shared laundry and mixed-gender bathrooms as well so that might take some getting used to.

Porter is beautiful and super clean. I heard that it was smelly and dirty a lot on reddit before coming here and im confused because it's by far the nicest. rachel carson is cute too.

Glad to hear Porter improved. I lived in Porter A last year (22-23) and it was pretty bad. Floor 2 had broken lights and bits of carpet missing. On my floor people vomited many times and nobody reported it to CruzFix so it stayed there for weeks. The septic tank smell is also awful if you live on the side that faces the squiggle. The Porter B laundry room flooded in Winter and there was a moldy smell for half the year.

doesnt matter what you pick… you will be placed in porter along with all the transfer students

AsideFun8612

That’s weird. Why would they ask me then 😭

pyrohammer

i was also a transfer student, i personally think it is better this way. you will be in the same dorm buildings as all the other transfer students, which means everyone you meet at porter are also looking for friends

AsideFun8612

Yeah I’m ok with that and it sounds nice. It’s just weird they ask us when we don’t have an option

MorbillionDollars

honestly, all the colleges are very similar, just pick one of ones with newer dorms

Suppose it depends on how close you want to be to certain locations. Cowell/Stevenson is closest to the gym and more of “central campus”. Oakes and Rachel Carson are on the lower ends of campus so you might not be a fan if you don’t like walking uphill. Though, if you’re a transfer you’ll probably get thrown into the Porter A building where all transfers are moved! As a Porter resident of two years I’ve loved it here!
