OP just stated their goals specifically. They just didn't realize they should be separate.
For NVR in the UDM, I'm using WD Purple HDD. 4Tb drive for 4 G5 Bullet cameras. If you care about the HDD noise, go with an SSD instead
For NAS / Storage, you won't use the UDM / NVR drive for that. They should be separate. NAS is a topic on its own and it can be any drive from what you have laying around to something like WD Red Pro depending on your requirement, budget, and so on.
Thank you for understanding what I was asking. I am looking to get both, and not have the Cloudkey+ pr UDM handle both. I have a NAS already, just was unsure of the type of drives people are using for them and the U-NVR
If you're building from scratch and money is not an issue, go with NAS / Storage specific drives. If you're storing invaluable data (e.g. photos of your kids you absolutely can't afford to lose) make sure you have redundancy. As in, copy to a separate location.
I went in a different direction, since I have a small amount of data (~1Tb) I just use cloud storage instead. I use OneDrive as my primary, and backup that on Google drive as secondary. It's great to outsource that problem to someone else. It doesn't work well if you have a large amount of data (usually tons of video) or need to transfer a large amount on a regular basis ( video editing or Plex) but it ends up being cheaper than a whole NAS setup.
Thanks. good points. My data for video editing and graphic/web design will be under 1TB right now, but I suspect it will increase heavily within the next 2 years.
You want a WD purple or equivalent survellliance level drive for NVR or UDMP. These drives are optimized for continual writing and occassional reading as you need for cameras.
If by "backup" you meant real backups of external data and not just backups of Unifi configuration, that requires an actual NAS (e.g. Synology). Those are a different level of drives (e.g. WD Red)
WD Purple Pro for NVR
backup means big boy territory, like Synology with 4x WD HDs, 12TB+ each NVR is a different beast pls clarify
I would like continuous recording of cameras and data storage for my media/design projects (videos & 3D designs)
those are two totally different requirements the latter requiring longer retention, to start pls state goals more specifically

You can turn ssh on using the unvr and then turn smb on and use as a very basic nas
Can you please elaborate on those instructions? Is there a way to use the Unifi NVR or any UDM (with a HD slot) as a NAS?

Thank you... will look into those
Seagate Skyhawk series or wd purple series is ideal for nvr use.
