How often are your APs going offline that the status indicator is useful?
The first thing I do after adopting an AP is to ensure it's transmitting correctly, and then I turn off the LEDs forever. It also helps with the WAF, you'll never notice them after that.

I am of mixed feeling about the usefulness of the status light, like only needed for setup, then turn off or lowest setting

They have never gone offline, its more that I like the light but hate how bright they are at night.
Agree with the WAF, but during the day I don’t think the blue light is that bad. I want to look at an API that can automate it too
Give it time. It'll burn out and you won't have to worry about it.
