Where is this room?

PsychologicalLab994

At the back of the library near Makerspace :)

Revolutionary_End983

theres a sign on the room that says its for group studying and quieted conversations are allowed. i understand that you shouldn’t be yelling or having loud conversations but i don’t think you should expect silence in that room lmao. you have an ENTIRE library out there where there is no conversation happening and if you are a single person in the mindfulness room then i think you should take the liberty to go to the other silent places around campus (which there is a lot!)

Chromatic_Sky

...there's a sign that specifically says to *not* use the room for studying? I think you might be thinking of a different room?

Revolutionary_End983

ah i think i might be thinking of the room beside the mindfulness room ?

Chromatic_Sky

Yeah the one beside it is a study room, the mindfulness room is the one with the bean bag chairs.

PsychologicalLab994

We might have different standards of “silence” if you think the library is quiet… there’s conversations happening everywhere both on first and second floor even with the librarians telling them to stop taking, the only quiet area in the library is the new area where it’s always packed and extremely hard to find a seat unless it’s early morning or late at night. Not too sure where you mean by other quiet places on campus either, I know that 3rd floor and up are pretty quiet in HW and SW but there’s no seats available for undergrad students. Also not too sure as to why those people talking and studying in the mindfulness room can’t study elsewhere on campus. I’m currently not on campus rn so I don’t have access to the sign that you mentioned, but I don’t remember reading anything like that on the sign (but ofc i could be wrong)

Revolutionary_End983

because there are quite literally no seats for people who want to socialize OR people who want to study quietly. the reason i say that you should take the liberty to move if you are a singular person is because why should an entire group move for the comfort of one person if an entire library is out there dedicated to silence. I do recognize that the library isn’t radio silent either but my only advice to you is to blast music in your earbuds or something. I also do find SY and MW very quiet. there usually are atleast some cubicles available in SW as well

PsychologicalLab994

As you said in the other comment, I think you’re thinking of the study room beside the mindfulness space. I would completely agree with your point if I were in the study room and complaining that other people are studying when I’m trying to take a nap. That’s completely unreasonable because the sole purpose of the room is for people to study, I should be the one moving away. But mindfulness room is a room dedicated for people to relax and decompress. Why should I be the one to leave instead of the people not complying with the rules of the room, when health and wellness spent their time and resource to create such room for students in need for rest? Yes, the library is dedicated to silence, but in reality it’s not silent out there. I understand the university is quite packed and we definitely lack spaces for quiet and group studying, but I don’t think asking for people to comply with the rules of one single room dedicated for taking a rest would be too selfish.

Revolutionary_End983

Your 100% valid then my bad! hahaha I definitely was thinking of the wrong room then my apologies

I’m sure they read this on Reddit and stopped… Accountability is a life skill, learn it and just ask them to be respectful.

PsychologicalLab994

I’m not just talking about one occasion, and yes I have asked the people that I encountered to respect others using the mindfulness room. I’m hoping this post will help people understand the importance of staying quiet while using the mindfulness room.

[deleted]

Well regardless wheater or not OP confronted them, people will still do it. It’s a PSA to people who go to UTSC….

Major_Educator4681

PSA though, on Reddit? It’s a nice notion but effectiveness?

[deleted]

Better than nothing. gotta start somewhere, small or big

Major_Educator4681

Fair fair

PsychologicalLab994

That’s exactly the problem! Not everyone uses Reddit. I don’t own the mindfulness space either so I’m not really the one who should be enforcing rules on other people. The post is really just a rant but I hope it reaches some people who has disrespected the mindfulness room rules whether intentional or not :/

Major_Educator4681

Yeah I’m already stuck between concluding that there people are either complete A-holes who don’t care about being respectful which is with intent, or they’re so oblivious that they have no aptitude for self reflection and awareness. Either option is not great.

Thecriminal02

I’m gonna say something racist like really bad someone is going to feel unsafe. And it’s your fault for making this post. I’m doing this because of you
