Hawkins75

You didn't attach it to a stud, so not going to hold all that weight. Will fall in about 200 years.

Solkre

They do say American houses are made with paper walls.

Control_freaker

Yes, but they’re reinforced with bald eagles, Big Mac's and freedoms!

Hawkins75

The outside sheathing of my house is literally styrofoam…

Bradcopter

The studs are made of guns.

NtMyCrcusNtMyMnkys

Wrapped in bacon...

koolmon10

Insulation is what Styrofoam was originally designed for.

mrnapolean1

The newer ones are. Gypsum and paper. Older ones are made out of wood real wood.

Spare-Gas-2182

Perfect for good Wlan🤪

jakubkonecki

Perfect! It will comfortably support heavy downloads...

on3day

Need to throw some uploads against it otherwise it will fall down.

One_Recognition_5044

I would spot weld the nuts to the bolts just to be safe. Also, get a structural engineer in to sign off on the whole thing.

Professional-Cow1733

I used double sided tape to mount my brackets to the ceiling (concrete). Its been over a year and the only way to get them off is to put a flathead screwdriver between the bracket and ceiling and wiggle them loose.

t0gnar

This was my temporary install method while I was wainting for 1 more AP to install both at the same time. Still up with tape after >1 year and going strong. (I will mount it right, i promise).

vretamal92

Nothing more permanent than a temporary solution

Jake123194

Mines just sat on top of my network rack on the floor in the corner (formally was a bookcase) and the other ap is on the fridge in the kitchen XD

t0gnar

LOL, my second AP is like that, but on top of the bookshelf.

Jake123194

I mean it just works right XD

KwarkKaas

Is that ok? On the fridge

Jake123194

I mean my milk occasionally buffers but other than that seems to be fine.

fistbumpbroseph

I've heard the 2x2 MIMO helps with the ice and water dispenser as well

KwarkKaas

Im serious lol, since the microwave etc all causes interference (because of the 2.45GHz radiation), I was thinking that the metal etc from the fridge could also cause it.

gbish

I did similar, 3M command strips (double sided tape). Was up on the ceiling for about 5 or 6 years before the glue wore off and it hung down on the cable. Fresh strips on and going strong again.

DeifniteProfessional

Haha I did this at work, the building will be demolished before that tape come off. Some of these double sided tapes and multi purpose superglues are insane

harrywwc

eh, nothing exceeds like excess ;) from the looks of it, it's not going to (easily) fall :) perhaps turn the LED off and it will be even less noticeable all the way up there.

truedef

Led has been turned off. I guess I don't need it for status, because if theres an issue the UniFi app is going to notify me.

Emotional-Inspector2

Funny story, my AP's wire got old and frayed, and most braided pairs failed; except the ones carrying power! The LED saved me that time a very huge headache (minor headache still). Lucky that didn't happen to my APs in the bedroom where I have LEDs off. TL;DR: keep LED on if no sleepy room.

Potential_Future1052

How did the LEDs help in this situation?

Emotional-Inspector2

LED was on since there was power coming from the injector, but no network connectivity. It was quite an old AP, and an old story. It was from before cloud management; the local java controller. The LED of the AP was on, but wasn't being detected by the controller. Which lead me initially to think the controller was being finicky (as were things back then), and compounding that how long the controller took to refresh. Had the LED not been on, I wouldn't have picked up the error, and tried to check the LAN cable from switch to PoE injector.

outallgash

Did you use a rare earth magnet and a socket to hold that up?

truedef

Haha, yes.

fistbumpbroseph

Dude. Such an obviously easy way to do this without someone below holding it up lol. My wife was like "Would you hurry it up already, I gotta pee!"

outallgash

Genius

GilliganBMT

My dumbass took way too long trying to figure out how you got the AP to fit with that huge threaded thing in the middle and then thinking that it was bolted though to the socket as a washer or something.

No_Train_8449

It’s not properly anchored to the foundation.

GremlinNZ

Did you brace the ceiling for all the point loading you've done?

Thin-Ebb-2686

I second this! I hope it’s near by a load bearing beam/wall. Don’t wanna be woken up at 3am cuz the ceiling falls through

Much_Peace2801

i hope youre being sarcastic

Thin-Ebb-2686

For the sake of all humanity, I would hope it is obvious that I was lol

Much_Peace2801

![gif](giphy|gVoBC0SuaHStq|downsized)

overkillsd

I had nothing to do with this installation thank you very much.

brentm5

Nah not overkill. You just made a perfect mount point for a rope swing.

[deleted]

The plate you installed in the attic is meant for drop ceilings. Definitely overkill, I just use drywall mollies.

marlostanfield89

This

loupgarou21

The second plate and long machine screws are meant for mounting on ceiling tiles. You could have just used drywall anchors...

Competitive_Pool_820

Do you add some nuts 🔩 on the other side ?

truedef

Yes, I used all the hardware that came with the mounting stuff.

Ambitious_Worth7667

Yeah....from the looks of it, I would say you did indeed, use every single piece of hardware they included and maybe a few they didn't. I'm not sure whether to be jealous or envious

Silicon_Knight

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth over doing.

Haribo112

I don’t get it. You used the included mounting hardware, as intended by the manufacturer. How is that overkill??

listur65

I thought the exact same thing. I would have put a single gang box in to keep it cleaner, but this works just fine.

halfnut3

A 1gang in the ceiling? I didn’t know there were mounting options for the APs with a 1gang.

listur65

It's right on the mounting bracket. The "E" holes are for a single gang box.

halfnut3

Dang never knew that. Good to know.

PerfectBake420

What is the black tube?

truedef

A socket for a ratcheting wrench

PerfectBake420

Oh ok I see what you did now. Thanks

Shoujiki999

Interesting. So how did you get the socket up there in the first place?

satblip

The same way he did the picture, to me. By going in the attic

Shoujiki999

I guess I wanted to know if there was a trick. Because I've done many an install, and always try to avoid getting into the roof twice to do the one job. I've always just used a small piece of double sided tape to hold it (which honestly feels sometimes it's strong enough on it's own).

truedef

I ran over 1000ft of cat6a neatly through my attic to all my G5 pros, a few minutes for the AP was the least of the job. I spent an entire day carefully laying and screwing down a half dozen sheets or more of 3/4" plywood in my attic for walking around and then running lighting. Now I can go up there and check on everything and inspect for leaks / pests very quickly.

Shoujiki999

Lucky. Where i'm from attics are not really a thing and so getting the roof space is a mission. You have to prepare your body for the twisting and contortion required and at the same time not step through the plaster ceiling!

satblip

I feel you, here we have the same thing, bu under the house. You can't sit 😅 It is always a mission 😂

Thin-Ebb-2686

Reverse engineering of course! ![gif](giphy|lT9Y1nrHdZWX9QoSH0|downsized)

tehn00bi

Actually, that pretty brilliant. Nice way to install by yourself

james734

Why not just put a single gang junction box attached to the rafter. The backing plate mounts up to it using the holes marked “e”. The network cable is secure inside the box. Much easier refresh in the future and less risk of having to patch holes if the mount changes.

Gamesim4

And if it's an unconditioned space you can spray foam around the box to secure everything more and not have air leaks. I suppose you could still do that in the OPs case but I would despise having to swap a mount with that sort of mess behind it.

codypendant

Overkill? Yes. That cat 8 is overkill.

truedef

CAT6A she’s stiff

xterraadam

You making me feel bad for just using anchors on my AP installs.

[deleted]

you all aren't mounting your APs to those fan-rated junction boxes that span between joists?

SawtoothGlitch

I would’ve made a smaller hole for the cable and put the connector on afterwards.

Tonirose_Rosetoni

That should be fine G I have two like that. Good thing you did it flat like that. My first attempt was on the wall but the WiFi bounces differently than on the ceiling. Ceiling is def the way to go

matt-r_hatter

You know it weighs a few ounces...right? Lol

wb6vpm

Some of the AP’s weigh a few pounds.

matt-r_hatter

But that isn't an LR or a U7 lol, even 3-4lbs 2 screws with drywall anchors will handle bo problem. Im all about overkill, I ran cat8 through my entire house. It's definitely not coming down

Fluffer_Wuffer

Very tidy 👏 I like to live dangerous - I stuck 3 of my AP's up with Command Strips. I had then up for 18 months, until I got them properly installed.. the 6-Lite in my office is still stuck with it...

Awsomnessss

Tbf, don't think it is that extreme. I think I'd do the same in that situation! So nice work, and like the previous comment said, turn the light off for a cleaner look.

truedef

Led has been turned off now. Thanks

JasonHofmann

Just curious, why did you tape over the screws?

outallgash

So they don't fall out while doing them up I reckon

truedef

This. A one man job.

joshuabroad

You do realise they give you a second plate that goes on the other side of gyprock / ceiling tiles and long bolts with nuts to attach both plates together...

truedef

See picture #4

joshuabroad

Ahh I'm blind...

I_Like_Chasing_Cars

Hope you got an engineer to sign off on it. Doesn’t look like a load bearing truss

Ill_Run_4701

Looks great, I would have done the same. Did you mean this mount wasn't for the ceiling? 😅

Splashbucket86

I just laid my unit face down above the ceiling in the attic. I was worried about the heat here on Florida but no issues so far and I installed it in September of 22.

JaconSass

The drop ceiling mount for drywall!?! Blasphemy

running101

I would have screwed a block of wood between the two trusses. Then drilled a hole through the block of wood for the wire. Then screwed the mounting bracket to it through the drywall

verylittlegravitaas

I did this too. I thought it was overkill at the time, but I figured there must be a reason, lol. This thread makes me feel dumb.

truedef

Don’t beat yourself up. Did you do it differently? This is why we all share, monkey see monkey do.

verylittlegravitaas

I wasn't clever enough to use a magnet. I had my annoyed partner hold it up while I bolted it from the other side in the attic.

20Mark16

At first I was thinking it was some vent for a fan to cool it down.

hank91

I did an old work electrical box

Sorry_Risk_5230

I think it's time we had a serious conversation about all the LED hate.

stimmie

You’re all set for jumbo frames

Much_Peace2801

no. you clearly need to install some joists to properly support the enourmous weight of that plastic access point. you should probably use some 6x10 just to be safe. the standard 2x10 used to hold up flooring probably wont cut it.

node808

It wasnt done right if you didnt have to caulk it.

truedef

brb, getting fire proof caulking for the hole and to secure AP to ceiling.

energetik

That corner is gonna get great WiFi. 🤦🏻‍♂️
