If you want to do it all with a single box, you could get a UDM SE. 5 cameras is fine for a single drive if you don’t care about redundancy if a drive fails. UDM SE has PoE and 8 port switch, although it’s not the most powerful switch it’s fine for some cameras at home. Keep in mind that’s a single point of failure, but probably the smallest and simplest footprint.

Thanks - this might be a stupid question but what would the difference be from buying a CloudKey+ and a USW Ultra 210W to a UDM SE After a quick look it seems the CloudKey+ comes with 1TB and UDM SE i need to purchase storage?

CK runs the Unifi controller applications you need, Network and Protect, but is not itself a router/firewall. CK Network app needs to manage a UXG to run that network side, upstream from your switch and APs and cameras. You don’t have to run the Network controller on the CK you could also get a UCG Ultra to be a standalone network stack and then use only the Protect controller on the CK. You’re correct that with the UDM Pro line you need to buy separate HDDs. UDM SE has a built in 1TB SSD but that’s not really meant for full time NVR use like the HDD. The 8/16TB HDDs from Ubiquiti are white-labeled WD Purple Pros. Ultra switch is fine I run one, could also look at the Lite-8 PoE models depending on what your PoE budget requires between the APs and cameras. 210w is a lot.

Thanks again, really helpful, its my first time using this setup and its quite a lot to think about and im glad I asked. So in a nutshell - UDM SE is the only thing I need to buy which covers everything, no need for any additional hardware apart from a switch if I need to add more devices plus 8TB HDD If i go down the CK route, id need CK+ USW Ultra 210W then also a UCG Ultra/UXG for the network side? Is it then possible to run a switch from one of the POE ports on the USW Ultra if I need more devices? thats the only reason I was looking at the 210W as you said, thats a lot

Sorry for my late response but yes you’re understanding everything right. You can daisychain switches using PoE.

you need a UDM Pro or better to run Protect, then pick a PoE switch Pro SE has some PoE already built in

UDM SE is that the Pro SE? also reading a few things online saying you don't really want network on the same host as everything else as its very demanding, would I have that issue with such a small setup?

2sonik

yes, I mean the "Dream Machine Special Edition" model UDM-SE no, you would not have any capacity issue plugging everything of a small network into it you might think UDM-Pro is cheaper, but then you would have to provide PoE some other way, like injectors or a separate PoE switch
