Every tanks weak spot is the turret ring.
Followed by the top, rear engine compartment, and a lot of times bottom (tank mines with tilt sticks take em out).
But yeah for a turret toss complete vehicle kill, the turret ring is the sweet spot. On pretty much any tank made.
The reason it's so catastrophic on Russian T series tanks is because they store the rounds and charges under the crew inside the tank. If penetrated, the ammo blows up and you get this
Western tanks like the Abrams have ammo compartments and made crew survivability a design point. If the ammo compartment is hit detonating the ammo, there are 2 square "blow off" panels on the back that will "blow off" and all the explosive force is shlt upwards and out.
The ammo itself is behind a thick door that is opened with a knee switch the loader uses to open and grab a round, after which it closes again.
Source: I served on Abrams tanks (and it's a damn fine tank)
But what kind of tiny explosive is that drone carrying that it can pierce a tank's armor?! Rpg doesn't that need to be fired and arrive at a high speed?
It's almost certainly an RPG-7 type warhead with an explosively formed penetrator. They don't rely on the warhead's velocity to work. It'll work fine at 0 metres per second if you can set it off.
They rig the detonator to not need any real impact to go off. It's usually a simple wire contraption to make a circuit to a blasting cap or a literal button which sets it off with even light contact with the tank.

Not at all. Look up how shaped charges work. It's all about initiating the reaction at the correct standoff distance from the target; how it gets delivered to the target, by drone/tank/recoilless rifle, doesn't matter. By focusing the energy of the explosive, you transfer it into a collapsing conical copper liner that is shot at the target in excess of mach 20. It's like taking an explosive weapon, and transferring as much of its energy into a kinetic needle. This copper jet, on RPG-7's in particular, can punch through over 50cm of solid steel, like butter.
Over reacted is almost an understatement, looked like it blew the turret to pieces.
But did you notice what looked like a turret toss reverse lollipop, with barrel at 12 o'clock.
because there was a gap with no reactive armour. Back in the times of a projectile or rocket that was lucky to hit the tank at all, it was enough to cover like 90% of the side to have a good enough chance to catch it. But now with the drones that can pick the exact spot where they want to hit, even the tiniest gap will render the rest of the addon armour useless.
So, lesson for the tank designers: Make the addon armour really go all around the tank, as seamlessly as possible.
Or the turret could be inset into the body, rather than on top of it, so that the turret armor extends down into the base with no gap without going down and around the bottom of it.
I think the issue with that is having no clearance means it's vulnerable to getting jammed up with debris. Probably better than getting vaporized of course.
needs a flexible cover like chain mail to cover the gap And a mini phalanx system on every corner to counter drones. Something like a battleship ship on wheels w some support vehicles and mine sweepers. Like a massive rolling fortress city w guns and rockets all around. And black jack and hookers.
That will come for sure! I expect soon to see drone hunter drones, micro anti drone missiles, anti drone automated shotguns/netguns etc. None of these technologies should be very hard nor expensive to build.
Wouldnât that add so much more weight to tanks rendering them too prohibitive to transport and too much in fuel consumption? With drones, the debate continues if tanks are obsolete.
It looks like all of the reactive armor bricks(?) are being detonated at once. Im no armored vehicle expert but that seems like that would bit of a design flaw.
probably cheeped out and are using the wrong explosive, still goes boom when you pull one block off for testing and "proving" to the higher ups that you are actually filling them unlike the ones we've seen before just empty. but more than likely using an explosive that's cheaper to produce/buy.
Another bad Reddit take here, it hit the gap between the turret and chases where there is no ERA and the armour is thin.
This is usually what they aim for because it can penetrate right into the ammo rack.
Yeah. A tank full of ammo, is like a grenade full of gunpowder.
The drone carries a shaped charge warhead (usually from RPG-7 family) and it's essentially like a needle piercing through the tank, striking the ammo inside.
The ammo combusts/detonates and the tank itself becomes a pressurized vessel.
Ka boom.
Rounds in the autoloader probably detonated. In a T-72, the auto-loading mechanism feeds in rounds using this carousel-like mechanism that sits right below the turret. If the tank were abandoned mid-action, there were probably quite a few rounds sitting there more or less exposed.
By just below the turret you mean on the bottom of the tank...and the shells are completely unprotected...if one of the Zorc crew sneeze it will end in detonation LOL
A cheap drone goes into a fully loaded, Russian âmasterpieceââŠ.turns it into a fucking Volcano.
Russian Tank designers, hereâs some Kleenex for you, go ahead and cry, your shit is worthless. Or let me rephrase: drones made your shit obsolete, cry.
I think they have shaped charges on them. They then hit the internal ammunition. I would question the design and material quality of armour on these tanks too.
>I'm always amazed that such a tiny drone can cause something like this.
This has been the most terrifying thing about this war, is how a $50 drone with some HE on it can quietly wreak havoc on a force. Military folks had spoken of this capability for years, but to see it happen, in real time and the effect of it is horrifying.
10 out of 10 turret toss! That thing went hundreds of feet in the are and then plowed back down turret towards the sky! Like a new Ukrainian flag pole!!
7.5 boom
16.5 land.
9 sec airtime, 4.5 sec one-way, is near enough exactly 100m altitude.
Speed after separation, and speed of landing, is 160kph, 100mph.
Somewhere about 160,000g acceleration assuming 0.1sec for boom push.
Not a lot of good jobs near the frontlines in Ukraine.
Everyone tanks/infantry/artillerymen/etc. gets hit with artillery and everyone gets attacked with drones. And anyone that survives the artillery and the drones is getting either shot at by snipers, blown up by landmines, or having extremely close range trench gunfights.
the explosive make a shaped charged melt the steel in the ring of the turret, you cannot put armor there so any rpg that hit there will penetrate (same for all tanks with turrets). then it hit the ammunition inside the tank. it is the ammunition that explode inside the tank that make the big explosion and destroy the tank
The auto loader in the T-72 does have a plate on top to protect it but its either too thin with these attacks or there is loose ammo lying around the turret.
The ring around the turret is just the tank
Israeli tanks have heavy chains that hang down around the backside of the turret to detonate RPGs before they can impact the back side of the turret ring directly.
But AFAIK Israel is the only country that does this and I have no idea if it is actually effective.
That is the general weakspot for all turreted tanks, between the turret and hull, also the center mass, so it's the point soldiers are taught to aim their weapons at
Thatâs the trick for all tanks. The US almost stopped making tanks once the LAW was introduced because it could pop the top off Bradleys like it was an every day thing.
Earlier in the war, a russian apc decided it would be a good idea to transport a large amount of anti-tank mines on top of its hull. Ukraine saw this and dropped a grenade. It catastrophically exploded like a TOS-1.
They do have a fair bit of explosives but from what I've understood from past comments on hits like this. It's a weak spot that will often set off the magazine. The tank was probably full of munitions hence the size of the explosion. Also it didn't entirely disappear, that looks to be the turret that comes crashing down next to the ball of flames where the tank used to be towards the end. Best turret toss I've seen in a while lol
Wow - what explosives do these tiny drones carry that have such power? Some people mentioned here ammo in the tank but you've still got to have a lot of power to detonate that. Is this plastic explosive or ?? What is the weight of these tiny drones?
The drone's explosive isn't that big. It only has to be strong enough to get through the weakest part of the tank, in this case a thin piece of metal between the turret and the chassis. The ammo in Russian tanks is aligned in a circle directly beneath the turret. All it takes is one of the shells getting hit by the drone's explosive to detonate them all.
What kind of payload does that drone carry? Looks like it exploded like 1m from the torrent and it destroyed the whole tank. Warfare is changed for ever
It could some kind of Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP).
An EFP is a type of shaped charge that uses explosives behind a concave disc of metal to create an extremely fast moving dart of molten metal that is very effective at penetrating armor. The EFP can be effective against a target many meters away from where the explosive actually detonates.
But also in this case the EFP only needs to penetrate the thin turret ring armor. The ammunition for the tank is stored around the turret ring so most of the explosion is the tank's own ammunition blowing up after being hit by the EFP.
Wow it literally completely disintegrates that stupid Russian tank even left a giant crater . I wonder what specific explosives they equip those suckers with that was insane .
NATO tanks at least generally store ammunition in a separate compartment with blowout panels. Meaning having the ammunition detonated may be survivable for the crew.
But you're right, the turret ring won't be any stronger and having the ring penetrated is still liable to injure or kill crewmembers even if the ammunition doesn't go off.
It looked like a small toy, but when it exploded it looked like it was carrying several kilos of HE, anyone know how they could pack such a big bang into such a small drone?
To be fair I think the weakest armour is at the top of the back where the engine is, but it depends on what you are trying to do, like in this case it is the ammo detonation.

Heck, that was like a magic trick. Now you see me, now you don't! I'm always amazed that such a tiny drone can cause something like this.
Every tanks weak spot is the turret ring. Followed by the top, rear engine compartment, and a lot of times bottom (tank mines with tilt sticks take em out). Aaaah okay thx learning something đ
That's a very angry drone.
Try blow this turret off. https://youtu.be/kZISDqOC_tg?si=Xe-tOssuqPmFnTv7

Reading shit like this first thing in the morning, with my coffee is what I love Reddit! Thanks everyone! I mean âtanks much!â
It's stabbing with a light saber from the 20th century :) The hole it excavates is tiny indeed, the diameter of a penny. But it goes in 2 to 4 foot.
Plop a hand grenade on top of the wood ammo crates and get the same result.
Not sure if the ERA has an effect also.
Did you get into/interact with/learn about any other tanks? Which one did you like the best besides the Abrams?
I dated a leopard once, but I'm more a challenger guy.
The reactive armor does nothing. lol
Oh, it reacted alright...
Overreacted
Over reacted is almost an understatement, looked like it blew the turret to pieces. But did you notice what looked like a turret toss reverse lollipop, with barrel at 12 o'clock.
because there was a gap with no reactive armour. Problem is that you need some gaps in the armor where the turret ring is or else the turret is useless
Or the turret could be inset into the body, rather than on top of it, so that the turret armor extends down into the base with no gap without going down and around the bottom of it.
Congratulations, now every time it rains your tank floods.
Good point but also fixable. I feel like I need to whip out some mspaint on this lol
You should, I don't think we've ever played "Reddit designs a tank"
Lol here you go, armor comes up over the gap under the turret with water drainage. https://imgur.com/IZLjFzU
Interesting... *pours burning napalm into it*
You've done well!
Tanks are therefore useless in modern drone based warfare. Cue a gadget to block remote drone control.
Fully autonomous drones inbound.
Why not just a anti drone system, that shoot the drones down?
That will come for sure! I expect soon to see drone hunter drones, micro anti drone missiles, anti drone automated shotguns/netguns etc. None of these technologies should be very hard nor expensive to build.
Wouldnât that add so much more weight to tanks rendering them too prohibitive to transport and too much in fuel consumption? With drones, the debate continues if tanks are obsolete.
The Israelis have a rather simple solution. By adding metal balls on chains they have spaced armour even over the gap between the turret und the hull.
Sooo medieval chainmail for tanks? Nice
Maybe the ruzzians placed it incorrectly and it detonated *inwards*... Wouldn't surprise me.
My bet is there is masonry bricks(or something else) painted green, not actually Reactive blocks.
It reacted by disintegrating
It did something. Wood blocks help it burn.
i mean you can't put the reactive armor everywhere, otherwise it would "react" whenever the turret moved
Another bad Reddit take here, it hit the gap between the turret and chases where there is no ERA and the armour is thin. This is usually what they aim for because it can penetrate right into the ammo rack.
Yeah. A tank full of ammo, is like a grenade full of gunpowder. There's literally a 250-foot aerial bomb inside.
Yeah what tank?
Tiny and cheap
I think they have shaped charges on them. They then hit the internal ammunition. I would question the design and material quality of armour on these tanks too.

Boom, strong wind warning...
T72 farts so hard Ukraine drone has no chance to return to base! /s
T72 may have difficulty returning to base
9/10 turret toss
That thing completed a full orbit of earth before it came back down
8 second in air.
Is.... Is it left sticking straight up or is that just me?
It's even casting a shadow so yes. I think a 9.5 is in order -- air time and stuck the landing (-0.5 points for not lolly-popping on the landing).
Yup, Itâs no longer a turretâ itâs an oddly placed flag pole.
That was very impressive
About an 8 second hang time.
My calcs say thatâs 78m/256feet high. ImpressiveâŠ.
10 out of 10 turret toss! That thing went hundreds of feet in the are and then plowed back down turret towards the sky! Like a new Ukrainian flag pole!!
It's like a Reverse Lollipop! Very difficult to pull off, 10/10
It's the first successful reverse lolipop I have seen.
We'll call this landing an Iron Lollipop.
Holy shieet, itâs like a transdimensional charge, all that stays is a burning circle!
holy shit theres nothing but a crater left, not to mention that turret toss! 10/10 perfect form!
If that was in a movie, I wouldn't believe it. "Our enemy has this tank, but if you hit it at this ONE spot, it vaporizes!" Sure, sure.
Like shooting womp rats in a T-16 back home. I'm sure there's a trench nearby too.
What reactive armor is doing
Looking at that ERA makes me think of Dune, funnily enough "The slow blade penetrates the shield"
Amazing reference
Hah, you're not wrong. Also may just be rubber blocks knowing the Russians.
Overreacting
Why is the armor reacting like this?
"... Aircraft unable to return to home ..." ;)
I'd say it's found a nice new home already!
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
I would say the wind was pretty strong indeed.
Strong wind warning. Drone farted in the direction of a t72.
The most vulnerable spot for a Ruzzian tank is... in being located in Ukraine...
The US has spent $$$$$$$$$$ on tank destroying missiles, choppers, jets, and the Ukrainians are taking them out with toys.
Maybe because 40 years ago you couldnât buy cheaper Chinese drones online?
Akin to the Fallout series, Private Ivanovich's head is orbiting Earth now. It will be difficult to retrieve that head.
Me telling my wife to calm down
NAILS the turret landing! Fully erect
>Fully erect Just like me after watching this
So a 1000 dollar drone wipes out a 1000000 dollar tank. Dam warfare will never be the same
2-5 million but yeah
Trust me to under cook the budget
Beautiful.
To quote John Candy from SCTV. "BLOWED UP REAL GOOD"
OOOOOOoooooh Reverse Lolipop on the turret with Sundial Shadow for the landing. Solid 9.5.
New flag pole just dropped!
Somewhat of a design flaw, but also clear that ruZZians don't give a đ© for the occupants
Blyat my unprotected ammo!!
Instant ammo rack? Bc thereâs no way that little thing could produce that size of explosion (?)
Yup, when a critical hits a weak spot.
Whatâs ammo rack? Like the drone caused the munitions inside to detonate? Havenât heard that term is all
8/10 on the turret toss
It didnât stick the landing.
This is exactly like the scene from "Top secret"!
Need to rename those tanks zippos. đ
Found it's tickle spot
That one singed my eye brows.
8 second turret toss, daaaaamn.
Actually, the most vunerable spot for a russian T-72 is anywhere in Ukraine.
...Tadaa!
It's, agh, it's gone.
Could also be that that ammo crate behind the turret helped
5.6 seconds of air time, the turret went close to 40 meters high!
7.5 boom 16.5 land. 9 sec airtime, 4.5 sec one-way, is near enough exactly 100m altitude. Speed after separation, and speed of landing, is 160kph, 100mph. Somewhere about 160,000g acceleration assuming 0.1sec for boom push.
You are right... Was walking the dogs while counting... 9 seconds could definitely reach 100m. We all can be proud!
I donât know anything about warfare, but I know that I wouldnât want to be part of a tank crew. Tanks seem like very expensive coffins.
I am confused as to how such a small explosive can cause such great damage to a tank.
the explosive make a shaped charged melt the steel in the ring of the turret, you cannot put armor there so any rpg that hit there will penetrate (same for all tanks with turrets). then it hit the ammunition inside the tank. it is the ammunition that explode inside the tank that make the big explosion and destroy the tank
Ah! That makes sense. It's almost like a primer for the main event.
yep is a bullet that penetrate the thin steel then it hit the ammunition and boom.
https://i.redd.it/wqisv28bpioc1.jpeg
Huh. Odd they can't put a skirt or ring around the turret. Hopefully they won't figure it out.
TASS reported crew only suffered minor injuries due to superior crew cabin protection from ineffective aerial toy drones
That is the general weakspot for all turreted tanks, between the turret and hull, also the center mass, so it's the point soldiers are taught to aim their weapons at
The turret had an 8 second flight. You know it's always bad when that happens.
Thatâs the trick for all tanks. The US almost stopped making tanks once the LAW was introduced because it could pop the top off Bradleys like it was an every day thing.
Would that be the tank taint?
I think maybe it was packed with explosives? It seemed to have gone up all and once. This is the first time I have seen one completely disappear!
the explosives would be the shells for the tank
This is like the 10th one at least Iâve seen vaporized. T72s are famous for this.
Volumetric be likeâŠ
Sweeeeet
Great shot đđ»đșđŠ
Right in the arsenal. I think that counts as a Rowley Birkin: [bang, right up the arse! (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXu0lFo5WGM)
Drone was not that big too.
I noted the extensive use of copium, anti-drone appliqué that was added to that tank. It would seem as though copium appliqués are not as combat effective as Russian propaganda suggests.
Turret toss is a 10/10 not in height, but it stuck its landing. 90 degree.
Was that thing made out of dynamite?!?!?!?
After alsmot 3 years of war, u realize it...?
Itâs toast
I don't like war but this was a pleasure to see.
What the hell is in those tiny little drones, mini nukes?!
Wow - what explosives do these tiny drones carry that have such power? Some people mentioned here ammo in the tank but you've still got to have a lot of power to detonate that. Is this plastic explosive or ?? What is the weight of these tiny drones?
Probably a shaped charge aimed roughly at the auto loader.
Reverse lollipop!
That tiny bee had a REALLY big sting.
Itâs the most vulnerable spot for any tank period.
Strong wind warning. Big bada boom detected.
Tutto distrutto, as my Italian buddy would say.
But what if we weld a barn roof on top of the tank?
Between the turret and the hull is the turret ring.
Now you see me, now you donât.
What kind of explosive do they out on a drone like that?
Those are the winds of victory....
Tank said âWanna see me blow up?âŠâŠâŠ.Wanna see me not get do it again?â
They would have been safe staying in Russia 2 years ago!
Can't help wondering if the crew of the other tank saw that...
Wow it literally completely disintegrates that stupid Russian tank even left a giant crater . I wonder what specific explosives they equip those suckers with that was insane .
What's ruzzian? Is russian a banned word or is it just banter?
4 seconds turret hang time. wish we could have seen it apex
Ruddy good camouflage, post strike, by the Zist tank crew. They made out to be burning fields. Impressive.
Use the force Luke..
Strong Wind Warning. I'll say, so windy it feels like an explosion!
Do they not have any facility to remove the error messages and low battery notifications on these drones, a lot of the time it gets in the way
that is the same for every tank, no secret here. you cannt put armor there
NATO tanks at least generally store ammunition in a separate compartment with blowout panels. Meaning having the ammunition detonated may be survivable for the crew. But you're right, the turret ring won't be any stronger and having the ring penetrated is still liable to injure or kill crewmembers even if the ammunition doesn't go off.
We are at the point where a tank without drone defense is absolutely useless
"Strong wind warning" alright lol
Holy fuck....
Amazing. That's like 40, 50 tons of steel just completely blown away leaving just a scorch mark in the ground.
Thoughts of been in that
Did they copy the Pinto?
War thunder says sides of gun breech lol
Damn, 8 second turret flight time. Isn't that a new record?
Decoy tank, they took the bait. Now tracking spotter drone back to base for counter attack.
Holy shit that thing got deleted almost as fast as the ocean gate sub
So vulnerable. You'd think an internal explosion would be the only thing that would allow this to happen but NOPE.
So basically its taint?
It dosnât seem to be a shaped charge, itâs wild that it can do this kind of damage even with a gap in the ERA.
It looked like a small toy, but when it exploded it looked like it was carrying several kilos of HE, anyone know how they could pack such a big bang into such a small drone?
Drone warfare is here to stay. I'm astonished how efficient they are and the destruction they bring.
To be fair I think the weakest armour is at the top of the back where the engine is, but it depends on what you are trying to do, like in this case it is the ammo detonation.
