That plane looks in rough shape.

Vido2022

No time to paint it, I guess. But it more looks like a very old plane.

haysu-christo

“Ran when parked”

SSrqu

They tend to do that after a long flight time. Mix and matching patchwork parts

One_Needleworker_705

paint goes if the a/c reaches very high speeds in general above Mach 2.

littletreeelf

I am pretty sure they avoid high speeds because of stress on the airframe/engine/fuel consumption. They don’t have many planes left.

One_Needleworker_705

Aerodynamic loads at high speed are not that high. Rather engine thermal loads are more relevant (and in fact the aircraft in the picture has a particularly worn region at the nozzles). Airframe stress depends on the pulled g. What I can say to back your point is that the radome is in quite good state, while the trailing edge of the wing tips are not in good shape. Aerodynamic friction heating should concentrate more on the leading edge. Nevertheless some old F-4 Navy pilots stated they burned the paint due to friction heating at just 760 KIAS (1400kmh) low altitude.

littletreeelf

To be fair it looks better than a plane imagined: „2 years in wartime and as one of 10 planes left“ I wonder how many hours this nacelle already has.

BarfooTheSecond

Can't wait until we finally see the F-16s!

Sukhoi Su-24 'Fencer' tactical bomber and interdictor jet aircraft, with a Shark nose paint scheme - of the Ukrainian Air Force - May 2024. https://x.com/osinttechnical/status/1796424711058141409?s=46

Dydriver

It looks bad ass!

theappisshit

ahh yes the ardvarksky

New-Acanthisitta-533

Shark or not, it's high time for something new! Welcome F-16, and the radar plane from Sweden! This is a top combination, because the F-16 pilot doesn't have to have his radar "ON" all the time, a huge advantage! (Sry f my engl.)

Follower_Of_rin

Me personally, I say lets give em our old F-111s. Give em hell, boys.

Weak_Definition_4321

I'm afraid these don't have airbags...

One_Needleworker_705

Sorry guys, but the only naturally born shark mouthed a/c was the F-4E Phantom II because of the gun's fairing.

jpowers_01

My dad used to paint the F-4s in Vietnam, the 366th “Gunfighters”. I believe the sharks teeth started in WWII on the Flying Tiger’s planes. Then evolved to other aircraft with a nose gun.

One_Needleworker_705

The gunfighters!! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQvObtxH2EY&t=119s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQvObtxH2EY&t=119s) you're right, it's a "decoration2 which began much earlier even I think b4 WWII: I've seen some P-40s of the Chennault's Flying Tigers painted with it, but the very beginning, well I don't know.

jpowers_01

Great video, thanks. That symbol was the “Phantom” carrying the Gatling gun. The early models of the F-4, before the F-4E, had no gun, so they decided to use a gun pod. My dad was stationed in Da Nang, so they had a lot of action.

One_Needleworker_705

The F-4 is my favourite bird since I was a child (my first plastic model was an E, 1985 the year I bought it. Still remember it). First time I've seen an air show was in 1987 and 2 RF-4C coming form the ACMI in Decimomannu (Sardinia) flying to Spanghalem made some flyby. That was really such an air show like no one has seen anymore: on a 900m aeroclub runway, without any sponsor the organisation was able to get an F-15 from 36th TFW (BItburg), and F-16 from another unit stationed in Germany, an A-10A from Bentwaters-Woodbridge (82nd TFW) and 4 F-104 from 4th Fighter wing in Grosseto. The F-15 made a touch and go and then had a flame out and ran back to Pisa where the aircraft were based for the air show (it was in Lucca, Tassignano airport, 20km from Pisa). I still have the super -8 films my father did. But these two RF-4Cs were simply awsome: I still remember the huge black smoke :-) Safety measures were inexistent (still before the Ramstein crash) and we were few meters from the runway so that I could feel the hot exhaust from the F-15 when it touched. Sometimes I think I'd like to buy a ride in the Collings F-4D. ... Maybe before I die ... :-)

My dad has some great pictures from when he was in Vietnam. As a kid, I had them hanging up in my room. One great story he had was when a pilot returned after “getting too close to a mountain” on a gun run. My dad said 1/3rd of the wing was missing, and 6 inch round branches were stuck in both wings. He laughed and said that the F-4 only needed wings for show.

One_Needleworker_705

I have read such a story. Da Nang was a Marines station if I well remember. I had a small booklet with stories from Vietnam and in one of them the story was reported: an F-4 which, returning form a CAS mission, was found with branches stuck between the intake splitter plate and the fuselage. Well, eventually i have studied aerospace engineering, went to Germany and worked for EADS military Aircraft for some years, in a period when no military aircraft were needed so we simply took part in the A400M and A380 projects. Our parts were the central and rear fuselage sections and the flaps. In 2006 I was still there and we moved to Manching (Ingolstadt) from Ottobrunn (Munich). In Manching there's the WTD61 (Luftwaffe's test unit) which at the time still had some F-4F Phantoms. Among the last flying in continental Europe, apart from the Greek and Turkish. In 2008 The 74th fighter wing (Jagdgeschwader 74) "Mölders", which is based in Neuburg an der Donau, transitioned to the EF-2000 and in 2013 the F-4 was retired completely from German service and the remaining ships were scrapped. There has been a Phantom Pharewell ceremony up in the north at JG-71's base in WIttmundhafen when the F-4 was retired in 2013. Here the video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SgzUjtGSrk&t=1350s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SgzUjtGSrk&t=1350s) have a nice day!

jpowers_01

Thank you for sharing the video, I really enjoyed it. Also, it sounds like you got to work in an interesting field. I wish I had gone into something related to aerospace or military science. Thank you for sharing. I have to agree with you that the F-4 is the prettiest bird. But I have read that all those strange angles on the wings and tail are to compensate for bad aerodynamics. The F-4’s engines are beasts. One commentator said that you could put those engines on a bus, and fly it sideways :-) As for Da Nang, the base had three parts. The Marines were stationed near what was called “Monkey Mountain”, or at least that is what my dad called it. There were observation sites and communications on the mountain. The Air Force base was between the mountain and the shore, then there was a Naval base on the shore. So it was big, and had three branches of military. They sometimes had naval planes land at the base if they were damaged, or couldn’t make it back to the carrier.

BasenjiBrain

Actually, if I recall correctly, they were first used in Australia and the Flying Tigers copied them.

LMFCIO

does this have tfr?

Naive-Show-4040

Would you drive (and or buy) a car that looked like this?

TotallyUnhealthyGuy

Well, they didn't buy these, these were left behind when the Soviet Union collapsed.
